UKRAINE: A GLOBAL CRISIS THAT HITS HOME Op-Ed by Margaret Victores

B

y now, we have all watched the Russian invasion of Ukraine unfold as an unfortunate case of history repeating itself. The background and complexity of these two neighboring nations’ intertwined history is too long for a re-telling in this article.

Suffice it to say, imagine their relationship like two first cousins. Russia and Ukraine, two individualistic nations with their own rich culture and language, share so much common history.

They are leaves on the same tree. In fact, hundreds of years ago, settlers of Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, moved further east in search of a more protected territory from invaders, and settled Moscow. In modern times, you would be hard pressed to find someone in Russia without Ukrainian relatives, and vice versa.

Many Ukrainians speak Russian (Ukraine was a part of the Soviet Union for decades), but also take great pride in their country, their independence, and their desire to move their government closer to a western-style democracy.

That brings us to the current conflict, and ways that we can focus on helping those in need.

Ukrainians are currently fleeing their country by the hundreds of thousands, creating the greatest refugee crisis in Europe since World War II. The borders of neighboring countries such as Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Hungary are open and accepting the refugees—who are mostly women and children (and their pets, when allowed). This demographic is explained by the fact that men aged 18-60 must stay in Ukraine and fight the Russian onslaught. Many refugees must abandon their cars, baby strollers, and luggage and walk on foot over 20 miles, as the extreme influx of people fleeing has created an immense backlog at the border.

Those going by bus and train have experienced harrowing journeys as well—with long rides in overpacked carriages. Often the heat is turned off at night to save fuel.

Many countries have offered aid to help these refugees, from granting

cash cards to opening schools and shelters. The European Union is preparing to grant Ukrainians who flee the war a blanket right to live and work in EU nations for up to three years. Numerous organizations have sprung to action as well—to help both refugees and Ukrainians who stayed behind.

Doctors Without Borders, a 50-year-old Nobel-winning organization, has teams in Ukraine as well as surrounding countries as it works to send staff and medical supplies to the hardest-hit areas. [https:// donate.doctorswithoutborders. org]

The world has become united in their efforts to help, as people recognize that this is not just a crisis for Ukraine, but also a moral reckoning to fight for what is right and help those in need across the globe. I believe that even in our small corner of the world, we can make a difference. There are so many great organizations on the ground delivering aid, helping directly in Ukraine across so many different platforms. I am listing a few in this article, but I urge you to do your own research when choosing where to donate. I know that together we can make a difference—locally and globally.

Save the Children, a centuryold organization that has worked in 100 countries, has a Ukraine crisis relief fund aimed at furnishing children and families with food, hygiene kits, funding, and more. [https:// support.savethechildren.org]

The International Rescue Committee has teams working in Poland aiding displaced families. The organization, founded in 1933, operates in 40 countries and donations go to food, medical treatment, and other emergency care in Ukraine, Afghanistan, Syria, and elsewhere. Razom, a Ukrainian-focused charity founded in 2014, is furnishing medical supplies to the country and working to “amplify the voices of Ukrainians.” [https:// razomforukraine.org]

BStrong, the organization started by Bethenny Frankel in conjunction with Global Empowerment Group, to help refugees at the borders with emergency assistance and supplies. [https://bethenny. com/bstrong]

Non-profit organizations are offering a wide range of support for those affected by the war. Here are a few that have received high marks from Charity Navigator (www.charitynavigator.org), which assesses groups’ efficiency, transparency, and other factors:

We spend a lot of time traveling along the coast, hanging out at the islands with our friends, fishing, and exploring the best places to build memories.

M

y name is Kaylee McVey Allen.

I am from the Cowboy Capital of Texas, Stephenville. It is about an hour and a half outside of Fort Worth. I was basically born and raised on cattle farms. I went to SFA for both my undergraduate degree and my master’s. I am currently a Licensed Master of Social Work (LMSW) and a Mental Health Coordinator for CorrHealth. My company is contracted through Jefferson County Correctional Facility. I have worked here for about three years. I have been with the League for almost two years; this is my first active year. My husband, Brock Allen, is from Biloxi, MS and

is obsessed with anything involving water. We spend a lot of time traveling along the coast, hanging out at the islands with our friends, fishing, and exploring the best places to build memories.

into my office and work on paperwork, meet with clients, and explore how we can work collectively with the community to better the lives of our patients. It is truly fulfilling work and I love getting to meet so many people from different walks of life.

My typical day starts out like many others. I have two furbabies, Dixie May and WillaDeene. They are both labs and fully believe that they are lap dogs, so I have to get up and cuddle with them first thing. We are pretty busy, so I really like to take a few minutes in the morning to hang out with them, mentally prepare for the day, and get ready. Normally on the way to work I grab a quick breakfast. My current favorite is Chick-Fil-A, where I am a few points away from Red Level (super proud of this one! HA). I love their breakfast. The chicken minis can’t be beat.

After work, I normally go in different directions. This can be going to a JLB meeting, volunteering with the women of JLB, or doing basic things such as a quick Target run, getting my nails done, and relaxing. Most nights I am staying in with Brock and we are cooking dinner and catching up on our shows. Our current favorite is Lone Star Law. It is so fun to watch the episodes that showcase Jefferson County. We try to figure out if we have been to the filming locations. Brock and I are normally early to bed. I am not the night owl that I used to be. My days can sometimes look different, but I am a creature of habit and love ending my days like this!

Most of my weekdays begin in court.

I sit in on arraignments and have meetings about happenings around the correctional facility. I then head

pring has sprung, and Beaumont is covered in color! Flowers remind us to bloom where we are planted, to be unabashedly bold, and to persevere in challenging circumstances (we’re looking at you, Winter Storm 2021). Whether you’re looking to immerse yourself in nature or are in need of a new profile pic, here are a few places around town you can get your flower power on.

Beaumont Botanical Gardens

Any SETX native in need of a floral backdrop for graduation, wedding, or family photos knows about the Beaumont Botanical Gardens. Located near the entrance of Tyrrell Park, this 23.5-acre garden provides visitors a chance to take in the multiflorous atmosphere. Whether you simply want a moment of zen away from bustling city life or need a place for the kiddos to roam, the gardens await.

Wander down the “Friendship Walk,” a paved path through the garden area, providing easy access for strollers and wheelchairs, or sit on one of the benches and take time to reflect, soaking in the nature scenes around you. Ponds feature Japanese Koi fish, goldfish, turtles, ducks, and water lily blooms. Sculptures of a pterodactyl and a brontosaur will make for a great photo op for kiddos (and those of us whose inner kiddo still looms large).

Beaumont Botanical Gardens Bromeliads, roses, and camellias—oh my! The Beaumont Botanical Gardens offer a range of flowers that will enliven your senses. As the oldest public garden in Southeast Texas, the Beaumont Botanical Gardens give visitors an opportunity to stop and smell the flowers—literally. Catch the azaleas in the early spring, roses from late spring to the fall, and orchids year-round.

For all the bird-watchers out there, the gardens offer a chance to peep your feathery friends yearround as the garden is located on a migratory flyway. You can see 250 species year-round and up to 400 during peak migration season.

Nestled within the Beaumont Botanical Gardens is the Warren Loose Conservatory, considered to be the second-largest conservatory in a public garden in Texas. At 10,000 square feet, the conservatory is home to diverse plants, some of which can only be found in rainforests and others that are native to arid zones.

McFaddin-Ward House

McFaddin-Ward House Although this Calder-located historic home may be best known for its rose garden, the McFaddin-Ward House Museum (MWH) boasts azaleas interspersed with bridal wreath, flowering quince, camellias, and more.

Varieties of blooming plants, bulbs, trees, and shrubs were added to enhance the beauty of the gardens year-round. The lawn gets its major color from permanent woody plants and roses, with splashes of seasonal color. Most seasonal plants bloom during the spring, with over 400 azaleas, interspersed with quince, sweet olive, spirea, daffodils, and irises. In the fall and early spring, roses bloom and flourish, giving the garden an aromatic splash of color. Camellias decorate the lawn in the fall and winter.

Also located in the garden are Rachel and William, two giant oaks registered with the Louisiana Live Oak Society. More than 100 years old, these magnificent specimens came from acorns gathered at the site of the Battle of San Jacinto, where young William McFaddin had been a guard to the wounded, as family history tells it.

W.P.H. and Ida McFaddin were both interested in conservation issues, paying homage to environmental preservation by planting a variety of different tree specimens in their yard. Their daughter, Mamie McFaddin Ward, was a founding member of the Magnolia Garden Club and was devoted to beautifying her home, including the grounds. Years later, the MWH staff continues this legacy and invites the public to stroll the gardens with their mantra, “Our House is Your House.”

Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center Located in the heart of Orange, Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center is a serene ecological sanctuary that encourages a spirit of exploration and learning. Featuring more than 300 plant species, the Botanical Gardens inspire visitors with their five artistic rooms and four Sculpture Gardens that showcase artistically-themed displays.

With the gardens lush 365 days of the year, Shangri-La is perfect for every season. In early spring, the azaleas make their appearance, and the summer reveals an array of floral-tastic colors.

Although the fall season brings more subtle colors with its arrival, the orchid displays in the greenhouse more than make up for it. Throughout the year, annuals bring color to the botanical gardens, making a visit to Shangri-La worth the trip year-round.

The Orientation Center includes an Exhibit Hall, Discovery Theater, Children’s Garden, Exhibition Greenhouses, Café, and Garden Store—aka there’s plenty to do & see. Home to a variety of wildlife, look closely to spot a gator or two when strolling through Shangri La’s Cypress-Tupelo swamp (on a boardwalk of course) or observe nesting birds in Shangri La’s heronry, adjacent to the Botanical Gardens.

A slice of paradise, Shangri La allows visitors to let nature be the soundtrack and view native flowers opening up to showcase their beauty. With places to sit quietly, one can savor their surroundings, observing and taking in Mother Nature. Fun for all ages, Shangri La’s earth-friendly mission demonstrates how people can live in harmony with nature.

This drink puts a floral twist on a classic lemony cocktail, making it the perfect beverage with which to welcome the warm weather. Made with fresh lemon juice, gin, elderflower liqueur, and champagne, this cocktail is said to be “floral and fragrant, sparkly and smooth.” Not only does it taste super refreshing, but also the look of this drink is just as aesthetically pleasing. This floral and lemony beverage would be ideal for a girls’ night, brunch with friends, Easter celebration, or even a floral themed party!

Ingredients: • • • • •

1 ½ oz. gin ½ oz. elderflower liqueur ½ oz. fresh lemon juice 4 oz. prosecco or champagne Lemon slice or twist for garnish

Instructions: In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add the gin, elderflower liqueur, and lemon juice. Shake well, then pour into a champagne glass. Top it off with champagne and garnish with fresh lemon. CHEERS!

Little Giraffe Blankets Oh my! I truly have not found a softer blanket on the market. The thing that I love most about them is that they come in a variety of textures—from silky luxe satin to soft and thick chenille—and nice, neutral, muted colors to go with any nursery theme. They are multi-use too! Wrap your baby in them while they are undressed at the doctor’s office; lay your baby on them for tummy time; use them as a cuddle blanket for a toddler; or steal them for yourself in the rocking chair! I’ve found myself guilty of collecting them all.

Baby 2022 Edition

In the time that has elapsed since I last wrote an edition of The Mash, I was pregnant and had my lovely baby boy—so this edition will be all about pregnancy and baby favorites. From clothes to blankets to the best non-toxic body products, I’ve got you covered!

Atelier Choux Bibs and Swaddles These beautiful French bibs and swaddles have long captured my imagination, are whimsical to look at, and are made of the softest muslin cloth. The swaddles and small bibs were perfect for the newborn phase, and I switched to the large size bib after my baby turned three months old, as they were super practical to mop up all of the drool caused by teething.

I use the swaddles as a soft blanket or to shield him from the sun or light when traveling in his stroller.

Earth Mama Products I’m a sucker for anything “natural” and “organic” when it comes to my baby’s skin. Although sometimes it’s just fancy marketing—Earth Mama products have really impressed me because of their simple but effective ingredients. I love to slather this balm on my baby after bath time and have rarely had an issue with diaper rash! I also use the baby body wash during bath time and the calendula oil on his skin post-bath.

No fragrance and natural ingredients that are gentle on my baby’s skin are a win/win in my book.

BB Hug Me Pregnancy Pillow With so many pregnancy pillows on the market, I was at a loss as to which one to choose. It seemed like they came in so many shapes and sizes that it was hard to know which would be best for my growing body. BB Hug Me checked several items off of my list: it was uniquely adjustable due to being filled with microbeads that conform to your body, the materials were certified to be free of harmful substances, the plastic components were BPA-free, and it was designed by chiropractors. This pillow was so comfortable and soft to sleep with during pregnancy, and it became multi-purpose postpartum, as I used it as a nursing pillow as well. It can also be used for tummy time and I’m sure a fun pillow for a toddler to play with as well!

Poppie Paperie Bespoke Baby Door Hanger There is nothing more special than welcoming your baby into the world with a bespoke door sign at the hospital for all to see, and there is no one more bespoke than Poppie Paperie. They worked with me on every detail of the sign, from the color of the acrylic, the exact font of the text, and the flower arrangement. The sign now hangs on the door of my son’s nursery and will be a treasured piece for his room in the future as well. I love that I got to support not only a friend in Junior League, but also an amazing local business!

EARNS NOTABLE JUDICIARY TITLE

T

he Honorable Christine Stetson is the first female magistrate judge in the Beaumont and Lufkin Divisions of the Eastern District of Texas. While there are other female magistrate judges in other parts of Texas, this is a first for the Eastern District.

“I am thrilled to be the first female magistrate judge here in Beaumont,” Judge Stetson said.

Judge Stetson is a trailblazer. While more and more women have joined the judicial workforce, the field is still largely dominated by men. Judge Stetson credits a host of strong female leaders who came first, helping to pave the way.

“We have had great female leadership here at the federal court in Beaumont from [The Honorable] Marcia Crone, who has been a district court judge here for many years,” Judge Stetson said.

Before becoming a magistrate judge, Judge Stetson was a very successful lawyer. She worked on both the defense side and the plaintiff ’s side and handled several cases in federal court. “[I] became really comfortable with the way we practice here and the rules we follow,” Judge Stetson said. She was inspired by her grandfather to pursue a career in law.

A federal magistrate judge serves in a United States district court. Magistrate judges preside over most phases of federal proceedings.

“We can conduct a guilty plea hearing if the defendant consents. On the civil side, we handle cases that the district judges send to us for pre-trial management, or we might handle just a specific motion if requested by a district judge,” explained Judge Stetson. “The best part of the job is being part of our system of justice that seeks to ensure everyone’s rights under the law,” she continued.

Judge Stetson also has a rich history with the Junior League of Beaumont. She joined in 2001 and eventually became the League president. But it was Judge Stetson’s provisional year that was particularly special. She was pregnant with her daughter.

“During my years as an active, my children were small. Jack was two when I joined, and Mae was my ‘provisional baby.’

They grew up in the League with me, watching me dedicate time to the League, joining me at events and projects,” Judge Stetson said.

For Judge Stetson, her commitment to community has come full circle. Her children are giving back in a big way.

“Jack works as a job placement counselor for the developmentally disabled and Mae is active in her sorority’s philanthropy in Baton Rouge—CASA. It comes full circle as CASA here in Beaumont was started by the Junior League,” Judge Stetson explained.

Not only that, but Judge Stetson also hopes her story resonates with members of the Junior League—a working mom, earning a powerful title. Judge Stetson is breaking down barriers and taking charge. She wants to inspire the talented community leaders in Junior League to do the same—“every time there is a ‘first’ for women, I think that it is just another step toward equality,” Judge Stetson said.

enjoying the beautiful sunshiny weather a little more. With this warmer weather comes more time spent outside for spring festivities. Nothing screams “sunshiny food” more than a lemon dish. There is something about the bright yellow color and the citrusy aroma of lemons that freshens up your plate and adds the right amount of “zing” to a dish. This lemon pasta recipe is light, refreshing, and filling. You can use it as a side dish or even pair it with your favorite grilled seafood for added protein.

Instructions: In a large bowl, whisk together the olive oil, parmesan cheese, lemon juice, salt, and pepper until mixed well. Set the lemon sauce mixture aside.

In a large pot, bring salted water to boil. Add the spaghetti and cook until tender. Drain the water, reserving 1 cup of the cooking liquid.

Add the spaghetti to the lemon sauce mixture and toss with the chopped basil and lemon zest.

Toss the pasta with the reserved cooking liquid to moisten. Add more salt and pepper to taste, extra lemon zest, basil, and parmesan.

Optional: add grilled shrimp or fish for protein.

Serve immediately and ENJOY!

Easter, Lent, and Passover have a long and overlapping history. In fact, The Last Supper was a Passover meal, the Seder.

What is Passover?

Passover (in Hebrew, Pesach) is a Jewish holiday commemorating the Hebrews’ liberation from slavery in Egypt and the “passing over” of the forces of destruction.

When are each celebrated?

Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday following the full moon that lands on or just after the spring equinox, which the Church calendar sets as March 21.

Passover is celebrated for seven days in Israel and eight days in the Diaspora, beginning with the 15th day of the month of Nisan in the Hebrew calendar.

How are each celebrated?

Easter is the culmination of the Lenten season, which begins on Ash Wednesday and lasts for 40 days. During Lent, it’s customary to abstain from meat on Fridays, to pray, and to practice self-discipline, which many people do by way of voluntarily giving up a pleasure or luxury for the season’s duration.

During Passover, leavened foods are prohibited, which includes most breads, muffins, and pastas; only unleavened bread, called matzo, may be eaten. This is to symbolize the Hebrews’ suffering and that in their hasty departure from Egypt, they weren’t able to wait for their bread to rise.

Transitioning Youth recently hosted its “GALentine’s” February meeting, with a focus on resume writing and job interview skills. Active member Sarah Wells served as the speaker for the evening, discussing the importance of a resume and the ways it can bring value to the girls in their search for employment in the future. The attendees were able to answer sample interview questions and receive feedback from Sarah and the committee members.

Transitioning Youth typically meets at the JLB Headquarters beginning at 6:00 p.m. on the 3rd Thursday of each month. Their next meeting will be on April 21, 2022.

y name is Meg Baertl Brown and I grew up in Fawn Grove, Pennsylvania. I currently work in hospice as a registered nurse for Compassion Hospice. I started my Junior League journey in 2011 with the Houston League, then I transferred my membership to the Beaumont League in 2012; I am currently a sustainer. I recently graduated with my post-master’s to be a family nurse practitioner. I founded a menstrual hygiene product pantry called PeriodPower Pantry in 2019 that distributes period packs to local schools, women’s shelters, and outreach programs.

Our motto is “giving the gift of a start.”

I am also the current Mrs. Beaumont International with the Texas International Pageant. I will compete in March for the Mrs. Texas International title.

I typically start my day around 6:00am. I get up and work out, followed by taking my dogs for a walk and then straightening up my house. Before I head to work, I work on some PeriodPower Pantry business by following up on emails, making period packs, and delivering the period packs.

The length of my day is about fourteen hours long. Eight hours of my day are spent as a registered nurse for Compassion Hospice. On Mondays, I use my lunch hour to serve as a Meals on Wheels driver. Depending on the day of the week, I spend about an hour in the evening serving as a board member to the Art Studio of Beaumont, Inc. and the Oaks Historic District.

I like to end my day by spending time with my husband. We either make dinner together, play with our dogs, or catch up on our latest obsession, Dexter: New Blood.

Beaumont Children’s Museum Partners with Indorama for Fishing Tournament The countdown is on! A new fishing tournament aiming to support sustainability, STEAM, and education will take place this July. Indorama Ventures and the Beaumont Children’s Museum are partnering for the 1st Annual Fish-O-Rama Fishing

Tournament at Port Neches Park.

According to the event’s website, the money raised “will be used to enhance sustainability through recycling and STEAM education programs in the many school districts.”

The tournament entry fee is $300.00 per team. Teams may enter until the deadline date of July 29th at 5:00 pm. Registration will open in May. Tournament categories include Bass, Trout, Redfish, and Flounder.

Beaumont to host

NATIONAL BEEP BASEBALL WORLD SERIES,

T

he game is called Beep Baseball and it’s coming to Beaumont. Mark your calendars, because from July 24th through the 31st, more than 30 teams from around the world will be vying for the title of Beep Baseball champions.

What’s beep baseball? According to the organization’s website, beep baseball is a challenging competitive sport for athletes who are blind or visually impaired.

Thanks to a 1-pound ball filled with old telephone parts, the visually impaired can hear the ball beeping in order to step up to the plate and swing. All players except for the pitcher, who is not visually impaired, wear blindfolds so that those with partial vision don’t have an advantage.

The beeping sound is different, but the game is not.

“We have world-class blind and visually impaired athletes who come together every year for our world series,” said Blake Boudreaux, NBBA President.

The organization could have picked any city across the United States—but they selected Beaumont! The event is being coordinated by the Beaumont Convention & Visitors Bureau.

“We are so excited to have them in Beaumont but are going to need all of the help we can get,” Mallory Cross with the Beaumont CVB said.

About 400 volunteers are needed to assist with the baseball tournament. Junior League members are invited to volunteer for the event.

What inspired you to join the League?

My aunt as well as a good family friend. Growing up, I watched them be a part of the League and saw not only what it had to offer, but also what we have to offer by serving our community. I was also inspired by my previous boss/family friend. She was a part of the League for many years, and working with her and watching how she continued to help the community even after going sustainer was inspiring.

I would have to say a cosmopolitan—it is a classic drink and never goes out of style.

Favorite thing about SETX: I really enjoy the opportunities SETX has provided me with, whether it be the wonderful people in my life, my career, or experiencing the passion this community has for this town. I always love that no matter where I go, I always see a familiar face. This community has a passion for helping their neighbors here as well as in other communities. There is a lot of love and passion in the SETX area, and no matter what, it stays with them whether they continue to stay here or go somewhere else, and that is something special.

Which accomplishments are you the most proud of?

I would have to say the year the pandemic started. It was my last semester of school, and I remember feeling let down because I knew I was not going to get to graduate in a normal way. But because of the support of my family and friends as well as the Lamar community, I completed with all As and with my degree. I remember the thought of giving up because it was such a let down, but I remembered nothing could take what I had accomplished away and truly the only thing that would have stopped me was myself, not a pandemic.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

“Love does not pay the bills.” -My nail tech.

What is the last show you binge watched?

Emily in Paris.

Who would you want to play you in a movie about your life? Reese Witherspoon (specifically doing the bend and snap).

Hometown: Beaumont, Texas.

Education: Majored in Criminal Justice and Psychology at the University of Alabama (Roll tide!!!) and mastered in Counseling and Development at Lamar University.

Family: My husband is John Beaver, and we both come from very large families! So we truly embrace the more the merrier in our lives!

Pets: Three cats: Meatloaf, Booger, and Patches. Three dogs: Sadie, Birdie, and Wolf. One Tortoise: Abe. My neighbor is a llama named Dolly; she isn’t my pet, but I would claim her if need be.

Occupation: I am a counselor at Garth House, Child Advocacy Center. I specialize in trauma counseling and have worked there for almost 8 years.

Hobbies: My go-to hobbies are baking, sewing, and traveling. I also can’t pass up a good lazy day on the couch.

That’s a hobby, right?

Favorite thing about SETX: If I listed everything, this answer would fall under the “too long, didn’t read” category, but just to name a few…The people—you seriously cannot find a better community, and I find myself wanting to be a better person because of the people here in SETX. Also, the food is so diverse, and I have so many favorite spots! And last but not least, Cattail Marsh—what is there not to love about this hidden sanctuary? It’s so unique and a must if you want to find some peace and quiet and see some of the beauty our area has to offer. Spring migration for birding is coming up in April, so be sure to check it out and bring your kiddos.

What are you currently watching/reading/listening to? Listening: The Highwomen is my go-to band right now—a group of phenomenal female artists joined together to make this fantastic album. Reading: Just finished We Were Never There—quick read if you like thrillers!

Watching: Inventing Anna, and I never turn away Guy’s Grocery Games.

Hobbies: Running. Salsa dancing. Singing.

What are you looking forward to this year in the League? I have absolutely loved getting to be a mentor and meeting all our new members! Their provisional project was such a success and our League is fortunate to have these amazing ladies. Also, I can’t wait to be Co-Chair of Membership and Development next year under LaSan!

What other volunteer or community organizations are you involved in and why?

I am a Meals on Wheels driver, Harvest House volunteer, and Southeast Texas Food Bank volunteer. I am the founder of PeriodPower Pantry, which provides menstrual and hygiene supplies to the girls and women of Southeast Texas. I volunteer because I love serving my community.

What did you aspire to be as a child? I wanted to drive a very large jacked up purple truck. I don’t know exactly what my job entailed, but I knew I wanted that truck.

What is your dream vacation? The productive me says traveling all over Ireland with my husband. But that also sounds exhausting, so I would take a beach week, with my biggest decision being when do I get up to eat.

What is your favorite dessert? Strawberry shortcake, macaroons, banana pudding, ice cream of all sorts, bread pudding, creme brûlée…I can keep going…

Favorite thing about SETX: My favorite thing about SETX is that there are TONS of things to do during the week and weekend.

Favorite book or movie: The Sound of Music.

What is your favorite League memory? I loved the general meetings. It was a time to catch up with some of the members that I hadn’t seen in a while, plus it was a great way to catch up on the League’s activities.

Who has influenced your life the most? My mother is a huge influence in my life.

What are you passionate about? I’m passionate about women’s health issues. I love educating my patients on why their health matters and empowering them to be proactive with their health.

What is your idea of de-stressing? Going for a long run. It seems like I solve all my problems when I’m running.

Neches River Festival Ice Cream Social

n Sunday, February 6, the Junior League of O Beaumont hosted our annual Ice Cream Social honoring Neches River Festival Princess Morgan

Miles. As President-Elect, I was tasked with planning the event this year, and it was truly a highlight of my Junior League career. Every year, JLB has the pleasure of hosting the first party for the NRF Princesses and Duchesses, and it is such an honor to help them kick off their NRF season. Although the weather had been rather chilly that week, Sunday turned out to be an absolutely beautiful day, and we had a great turn out. It was so fun to watch the girls interact with each other and get to know each other better while they enjoyed some delicious sweet treats.

Leaguers in attendance included Past President Diana Miles and her daughter Morgan; Sustainer Melinda McWherter and her daughter, Duchess Olivia McWherter; Past President Paula Lovoi; Past President Kara Hawthorn; Past President Maite Broussard; President Brenna Rodriguez; President-Elect Katie Baker; Sustainer Cathy Spidle; Sustainer Ashley Carter; Sustainer Gwen Young; Sara Norman; Courtney White; Ashley Billot; and Mandy Street. I really appreciate the efforts of Marissa Baze, Kristen Davidson, Meredith Youngson, Abby Keen, Courtnie Mercer, and Farren Morris for helping set up this event. The Neches River Festival celebrates two of our area's greatest assets—the Neches River and our youth. I hope everyone involved this year has a wonderful NRF season, and I wish all the high school seniors the very best as they celebrate this exciting time in their lives.
