T

his time of year is always exciting but after the winter we had, spring feels incredibly hopeful. It’s a time of renewal everywhere including The Junior League of Beaumont: next year’s Board has been approved, placements announced, and budgets finalized. Most of the things we set out to do have already been done and we are looking ahead to another promising year.

There may be some goals left unfinished and that’s ok. Remember, we’re only in the first year of a three year strategic plan (check it out under Resources on Digital Cheetah). Our job right now is to empower the next group of leaders so they can successfully take on the task of moving us forward. Now is the time to share all that you did this year: create a timeline of duties, consider what worked really well, what should be improved upon, important contact information, etc.

I know so many of us are still hesitant to make future plans. That’s what living a full year in pandemic-mode can do to people. Let’s allow ourselves a moment of hope and faith that we will gather together to enjoy minimeetings (April 13th) and year-end festivities like May Dinner (May 4th), where we will celebrate all the League has accomplished, honoring our Jewel Award Recipients and announcing our Active and Sustainer Members of the Year.

COVID-19 Jennifer Phelan on currently available COVID-19 Vaccinations...

Because, Let’s Face it Everyone Should Get Vaccinated! i, my name is Jennifer Phelan, a H member of the Junior League of Beaumont for the past 7 years, and I

have been fortunate enough to serve on the Board for the last 2 years. I am also a local Physician Assistant and owner of Eastex Urgent Care in Beaumont.

I have 10 years of experience in Emergency Medicine/ Urgent Care and like many health care workers this past year, I have come to know the effects and spread of the SARS COVID-19 virus very well. I have been fortunate to complete my vaccination of COVID-19 and would like to answer essential questions regarding the currently available COVID vaccinations.

How does the vaccine work?

There are two COVID-19 vaccines currently available to our area, each produced by Moderna and Pfizer.

Both vaccines use Messenger RNA, or mRNA, to deliver a message to your immune system. This message then tells your cells to create a harmless piece of a specific spike protein that is also similar to the same protein found on the surface of the COVID-19 virus. Your body will then recognize that the spike protein does not belong within your system and will start creating antibodies to remove it. In doing so, your body’s immune system becomes prepared to fight the virus should you encounter it in the future.

The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are considered to be about 95% effective in preventing future infection of disease. This means that there is still a 6

5% possibility of getting sick from the virus after vaccination, but most likely even those that do get sick after being vaccinated, will only experience a mild case.

This vaccination requires two doses, the second dose simply ensures that you have enough quantity and a quality number of antibodies to fight the virus. Once the mRNA is used to make the spike protein, it is then destroyed. The mRNA stays in the cytoplasm, is used, and then destroyed. This makes it impossible to change your DNA, which is in the nucleus of all your cells.

It is also good to note that the mRNA vaccine is not new technology. It has been tested for many years in humans for viruses such as Zika, Rabies, and Cytomegaly Virus and chemotherapy drugs.

How safe is the vaccine?

Unlike some common vaccinations, the two currently available are not live viruses and therefore you cannot get the active disease from receiving the vaccination. Long term side effects should be very rare.

What are the side effects?

• Rare: Anaphylaxis

Rare. Studies have shown anaphylaxis in only 4.7 Pfizer cases out of 1 million (0.0047%) and 2.5 Moderna cases out of 1 million (0.00025%). If you have history of anaphylaxis due to vaccinations, I would be more cautious and consider consulting your primary care physician. Otherwise, I would not be concerned.

• More Common: injection site pain,

fatigue, headache, fever, muscle pain. Personally, I did have all common side effects with my second Moderna vaccine dose.

Side effects lasted 24-48 hours and were easily treated with Ibuprofen/ Tylenol. These side effects also showed me that the vaccine was working and allowing my immune system to build immunity.

If I was diagnosed with the COVID-19 virus this past year, do I need the vaccine?

We do not know how long the immunity is lasting in those who have had COVID-19 in the past. Immunity from past infection seems to last about three months. I have seen many patients get COVID-19 twice and I would not recommend the experience if it can be avoided. I do respect that the vaccination is everyone’s personal decision, but, as a Medical Provider, I do recommend vaccination, irregardless of the fact that someone has had COVID-19 in the past.

Can I just get 1 dose of the Vaccine?

• To be 94% and 95% effective, you •

must receive two doses of the vaccine.

I have personally seen many patients test positive for COVID-19 after receiving only one dose of the vaccine, while awaiting their second dose.

How do I get a COVID-19 vaccine?

Currently, the COVID-19 vaccines are being paid for by the federal government. In the Southeast Texas area, I would recommend registering at https://vaccine.beaumonttexas.gov or talking to your local primary care

physician. Up until recently, only 1A and 1B have been eligible for vaccination.

1A population consists of healthcare workers or those who are at high risk of being exposed to COVID-19. 1B are those who are 65 years of age or 16 years of age and older with at least one chronic medical condition that puts them at increased risk for severe illness from the virus that causes COVID-19. Once you are registered, the health department will contact you via phone or email to set up a vaccination appointment. More recently, Orange and Hardin Counties have been able to administer the vaccine to those who are outside 1A and 1B eligibility due to the abundance of the vaccine. I would recommend checking local news and updates with local authorities as protocols seem to be changing regularly for our area and for those that qualify for vaccination.

I am hoping that in the very near future, once the vaccination becomes more readily available, the general population throughout all areas of Southeast Texas will be eligible as well. Those over 16 years of age for Pfizer vaccine and those over 18 years of age for Moderna vaccine will be able to receive the vaccine with current guidelines. Currently, thousands of pediatric patients are undergoing case trials to determine the safety for children.

The FDA is hoping to have vaccines available to all age groups by the end of 2021.

Why is the vaccine so important?

Obviously, the vaccine is provided to prevent the future sickness and death that has occurred with COVID-19 this past year. One other very important factor is that the vaccine can prevent mutations that occur as the virus spreads from person to person. The mutations form “variants” that have the capability of resistance to the current COVID-19 vaccines. As more people who get COVID-19 increases, the possibility of variants forming and spreading throughout our communities increases. With more resistant variants, it will take much longer for vaccines to reduce transmission, and this will further impede the goal for the general population to reach herd immunity than if these variants never occurred.

Ultimately, it is the goal of any medical provider to promote the health and well-being of their patients and their community. It is with that in mind that I must say the that vaccine is very important for everyone in my community.

MARIAH WALKER personal trainer yoga instructor barre instructor fitness model social media influencer dancing with the stars choreographer

am a certified personal trainer, a yoga instructor, Iinfluencer, barre instructor, fitness model, social media and choreographer for Dancing With the Stars of Southeast Texas. A typical day in my life is pretty hectic, as I wear so many different hats! I am also recently engaged to my wonderful fiancé Kasey Nonette and his 8 year old son Korey lives with us.

My day starts very early in the morning as I wake up and prepare for a full day of personal training with my clients in Beaumont. I train throughout the day starting around 5:30AM and usually complete training around 7:00pm. Most of my clients are face to face, but I also travel locally to lead various bootcamps. I also have virtual clients from around the country, including New York City, Chicago, and even Los Angeles! I love being able to see the world and get to meet new people from the comfort of my home in these times.

Nutrition is a big part of my life and I like to follow a healthy regimen that keeps me fueled for my long days. I typically practice intermittent fasting in the morning - it boosts my energy and keeps my body burning calories throughout the day. Around lunch time I like to make a healthy meal for myself since I’m not worried about cooking for the whole family - plus they don’t love tofu like I do! In the evening, we all get together as a family and have a healthy meal which almost always includes chicken or fish, rice, and vegetables.

During the day, I like to carve out some time for myself to work out, alternating between cardio and weights. I also like to ride a spin bike several days a week. I try to lift weights or do HIIT workouts 3-4 days a week. I also have to make time for yoga at least 2-3 times a week. Switching up my workouts keeps me interested, motivated, and burns calories efficiently!

My day also includes work as a social media influencer. I like to spend some time going over contracts for sponsored posts and working on those posts to deliver a great result for my clients. Lately I have also been working hard preparing my team for Dancing With The Stars 2021 - choreographing and rehearsing an amazing routine!

Most evenings before dinner I like to unwind with my family and help my step-son with his homework while brainstorming dinner. We like to spend time together as a couple after we put him to bed. This helps us to connect, catch up on our day, and take that time to plan out our next day because we’re both fairly busy. My days seem to get longer and longer but I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world!

y name is Krystal Smith and I’m a provisional. The attached pictures (of me in black in drive looking up at you) are me doing Sunday Morning Yoga... in my bathroom. I am a mom of four and since the pandemic, I have transitioned from working out in gyms to using a platform called Obé fitness that has live stream and on-demand classes with instructors from NYC. I’m also a performer, and I usually do a couple community theatre shows a year. Many of the dance rehearsals that kept me active pre COVID-19 are also gone, but most Obé instructors have theatrical backgrounds, so a lot of the dance cardio classes remind me of a challenging choreography day in rehearsal.

One day, during this pandemic, I decided to get a spare TV and rolled out my mat in the only space where a kid wasn’t blaring YouTube or Xbox at the time- my bathroom.

I had a great practice and I’m so glad I have this space to make time for myself and stay active!

How to Celebrate Easter or Passover During

SOCIAL DISTANCING As time passes, while doing what we can to continue to quell the spread of COVID-19 and encourage distribution of the vaccination to all citizens, we also miss out on important milestones, like birthdays and weddings, as well as holidays like Easter and Passover.

T

hough undoubtedly disappointing to miss these much-anticipated in-person events, there's a shred of silver lining: the fact that technology makes it possible for us to enjoy these special occasions together, even if not physically together. Below are, some creative ideas to employ when a holiday just doesn't really seem like much of a celebration.

1. Send out handwritten paper invitations for your virtual Easter or Passover celebration to add a more personal and tangible touch- you probably already have stationary, markers, and stamps on hand anyway.

2. Decorate anyway, even though you don’t have family and friends coming over for a big brunch or dinner. Dig out your spring wreath, your Easter bunnies, or your special Passover seder plate. You can even print off decorations if you don’t have much in storage.

3. Research good Passover games for kids as well as Easter egg painting options. If you have enough advanced warning, you can even have items delivered for minimal contact.

4. Order a special brunch or Seder meal. Ordering a special brunch spread or elements for your seder from a local restaurant is a great way to enjoy a chef-driven meal at home and celebrate. It is also a great way to support local businesses during such a difficult time. So order mimosas to go to add extra cheer.

5. Attend virtual services and don’t forget to dress up for the occasion as if you were about to leave the house.

It really does set the tone and make things more special when you aren’t watching in your pajamas.

6. For an even more interactive element, schedule a video chat with family members after the service to talk about what you learned and why you celebrate. You can also use video chatting services to socialize and eat your holiday meal “together.” Have each family set up a laptop or phone at the table and show decorations and Easter attire simultaneously.

7. Add an interactive element to your zoom call whether its making the same Easter cake, ham, or doing the Easter egg scavenger hunts in your back yard or egg dying party (paper eggs are an option if you don’t want to use real

eggs) at the same time. You could also make wreaths from flowers in your garden. If you celebrate Passover and have small children, you could also use paper plates, string, and crayons to make masks with the ten plagues.

Or you could write a script and create a family video where different family members are the various characters in the stories; then record the scenes, and have someone merge all of the footage to create one short film for everyone to enjoy.

8. Give back because a holiday like Easter or Passover presents the perfect opportunity to ask yourself a simple question. Namely, “What can I do for my community today?” Making a donation to an organization you care about such as those working to keep us safe and healthy is the perfect way to celebrate. Consider dropping off or having breakfast pastries delivered to first responders working over the holiday. Write letters, or make cards for residents at nursing homes, grocery store employees, firefighters, police nurses, and so forth. Or walk through your neighborhood and leave encouraging notes on the sidewalk and tape pictures or notes to your neighbor’s front doors.

9. Drive to a nice meadow in full bloom to take a Springtime family photo.

10. Use your at home-Easter or Passover celebration as an excuse to start a new tradition. Use your at-home Easter or Passover as an excuse to start a new tradition with your family. At the end of the day, Easter and Passover is what you make it and nobody said staying at home all day had to be boring! Be creative and make some memories with your kids and community this Easter and Passover holiday. Just remember to still practice safe social distancing and hygiene even if you have been vaccinated.

Remember, the greatest Easter or Passover gift we can give to our families, neighbors and all the essential personnel at work, is to not contribute to the spread.

ducation and Training brought back the Dare to Lead Kick-Off Event with Ellen Zimmerman in January.

Aimed at providing leaders with the tools they need to be successful, the event proved to be as successful as it was last year.

As Spring wraps up, Education and Training has plans for a Get On Board Training with Deborah Drago of the Southeast Texas Nonprofit Development Center, as well as a Cattail Marsh Excursion. Keep an eye on Digital Cheetah as Education and

Along with her Junior League duties, Education and Training Chair Mallory Cross also works for Visit Beaumont TX, which hosted Beaumont Restaurant Week from March 4 to 14. Junior League members volunteered at the ARTACO – Art Walk Taco Fest on March 6, a free outdoor event at the Art Museum and the Fire Museum. The event, which helped kickoff Restaurant Week, involved an art walk and taco fest including free arts and crafts activities, tacos, beer samples, music, vendor booths, and an art popup.

To the Stars & Star Studios- Please give yourselves a huge pat on the back as we applaud you for a job well done. All of your hard work paid off and the show was fantastic and very entertaining! We are honored to have you join our "League of Stars."

Beaumont’s Newest Look When you think of Beaumont, what do you imagine?

For active member Loni Lilley, the image was clear: a beautiful purple and yellow sunset with local refineries at work. And now that image can be spotted all over Beaumont.

“Beaumont Events hosted a contest,” Lilley said. “With COVID going on, I decided to check [on] their page to see if there were any announcements going on about events [that] they might be doing. When I checked out their page and saw the contest, I knew I just had to enter it!”

Beaumont Events put out an all-call looking for the next logo to use on a sticker to represent the city of Beaumont. The organization had big plans for the winning design to be featured on stickers and sold around town.

For me, because I am an art teacher at West Brook, it was an easy decision to enter the competition.

“I am still in shock that almost 400 people liked my design!” Lilley exclaimed. “Knowing that my community enjoyed it as much as I did makes my heart so happy.” While the pandemic has taken so much, Lilley is trying to focus on the positive because it’s actually given her something special.

“As much as I love my career, I do tend to put my own personal artwork on the back burner. I am thankful that Quarantine allowed me to dive back into my creative side and start producing again,” Lilley said.

n Sunday March 21st, the Junior League of Beaumont welcomed 68 princesses and duchesses to celebrate the honorees of the 73rd Neches River Festival. These future community leaders were thanked by the Junior League during a vibrant social gathering complete with an ice cream sundae bar. The young ladies were able to get to know one another over a sundae and selfie station.

The ice cream social has been a favorite Junior League tradition. “[It] was wonderful to meet the ladies and provide an event following CDC guidelines for them to participate in as they prepare for Neches River Festival,” President-Elect Brenna Rodriguez said.

This year, the Junior League was especially honored to recognize Emmy Merrill-Harris, the daughter of Active Casie Harris and Caroline Wilson the daughter of Sustainer Julie Wilson. Both young ladies attend West Brook High school. Merill-Harris and Wilson are the NRF Princesses representing the Junior League this year.

We thank Merill-Harris, Wilson and the other 66 young ladies for their committee to our community and their outstanding community service.

WOMEN’s HISTORY MONTH Take a Moment to Read the History of Junior League and Celebrate Women’s History Month Through AJLI as it Celebrates Some of Our Very Own Notable Junior League Members for Women’s History Month. Along with some of our very own history making members.

In New York in 1901, Mary Harriman, daughter of a multimillionaire railway magnate, and Nathalie Henderson organized the League for the Promotion of Settlements Movement with a membership of eighty-five other debutantes. In her first year, Mary Harriman [Mrs. Charles Corey Rumsey) sent eighteen League girls to teach drawing and calisthenics at the New York Settlement House.

ISTORY OF THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF BEAUMONT, TEXAS, INC. It is important for us members to look back at all that we have achieved, not only locally in Beaumont, but nationawide and abroad. As we prepare for the induction of provisionals, we might recall that the purpose of the Junior League is exclusively educational and charitable, and is designed to promote voluntarism; to develop the potential of its members for voluntary participation in community affairs and demonstrate the effectiveness of trained volunteers.

The object of the Junior League is to train its members for effective

Inspired by the work done in New York, a group was started in Boston in 1907. Leagues then began to spring up all over the country. There are now 290 Leagues and over 193,000 members in four countries.

In 1912, the first national Junior League Conference was held in New York with six of the seven existing Leagues represented. This was the beginning of the conferences that have taken place annually since 1917; with the exception of two war years. In 1921, the thirty Leagues in existence joined together to form a central organization known as the Association of Junior Leagues of America, Inc. Its purpose was to unite member Leagues and to promote their individual purposes by offering them leadership and assistance. It was stressed that the League was an advisory, not a supervisory, organization. Two years later in 1923, there were sixtythree Leagues. These Leagues were divided into six geographical areas, and in each, a League member was appointed to act as a liaison officer between the Leagues of the Region

and the Association to serve on the latter’s Board of Directors. In 1960, new geographical divisions created fourteen regions. Every second year, the Leagues in each region elected a member to serve as their Regional Director. Beaumont was in Region VII with seventeen Leagues from Texas and Mexico. In 1972, the Association was restructured into six geographical areas. Each area had an Area Council, Area Staff, two Directors, and an Area Nominating Committee. Beaumont is in Area Valong with the other Leagues in Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Oklahoma.

The management of the Association is vested in a Board of Directors consisting of eighteen persons: four are the Officers, twelve are from the areas, one is an International Director, and one is a Nominating Director.

As a prerequisite for active League membership, a Provisional course has been given since 1921. Background data, needs, resources and specialized services in the various fields of community life are presented in this course.

Through her education in the Junior League each member comes to realize her responsibility in taking part in community life as well as in national and international affairs.

The Junior Welfare League of Beaumont was organized in 1937 with a membership of thirty-eight, and in 1946 became a member of the Association of Junior Leagues of America, Inc, which is now called the Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. HISTORY MONTH The Progress We’ve Made And The Battles We’re Still Fighting

I

t’s Women’s History Month, a significant time of year which holds even more importance amidst a pandemic of historic proportions.

The Junior League recognizes the great sacrifices of the women who have come before us, and the important work still left to be done. As women, we know sacrifice. We recognize the power of our actions, the necessity of hard work, and the importance of standing up for what we believe. We understand that one woman’s work can pave the way for future generations of women to make lasting and significant social change.

During Women’s History Month, we look back on the powerful work of Junior League women like Sandra Day O’Connor, Dee Dickinson, and Toni Freeman, who have helped us get to where we are today, while also looking to the future and considering what we can do to make the world a better place for the women of tomorrow.

Women are used to working hard and making significant societal contributions with minimal recognition. While we deserve credit, we also understand that it is far less important than the ripple effect of our efforts; we don’t need anyone’s approval to take action. We’re not motivated by clout or accreditation; we’re driven by impact, change, and progress. With or without proper acknowledgment, our momentum will continue building.

We’re unstoppable. Our work will continue as we stand up for the needs and rights of women and children in the US, Canada, and Mexico, while promoting all other facets of women’s human rights.

We now live in a time when social media has given us the power to tell our own stories, inspire action through our leadership, and empower women around the world to do the same. Using the reach of these platforms, we also have the opportunity to remind the world of the brave women who have come before

us; women who could have never imagined the freedom of sharing their bold, unfiltered, unapologetic selves with the world. Never again will we wait for someone else to tell our story.

We own the narrative, and we won’t be silenced.

Organizations and platforms like Instagram are giving us the power to tell our stories in more ways than ever before, and we have a responsibility to share our truths so that future generations of girls and women can continue our progress.

2020 was the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment 2020 marked 100 years of voting for what we believe, making our voices heard, and taking action on the issues that matter most to us.

Commemorating that significant milestone allowed us to explore its relevance today by taking a look at what modern women’s groups are doing to celebrate.

Women’s Groups Are Leading Change!

2020 also marked the 25 year anniversary of the Beijing platform for action, an international landmark agreement to end gender inequality.

The Beijing platform for action

was adopted by 189 governments at the 1995 UN World Conference on Women, and is still considered the most progressive plan for the international advancement of women’s rights. After 25 years of work, it became clear that much more action was still needed, and The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is working to perpetuate the commitments of this historic agreement with its Generation Equality Campaign. This campaign’s mission centers around the acceleration of women’s rights and empowerment around the world through worldwide action. You can get involved through the link on the AJLI website here.

The Global Fund for Women is working to educate all women about their rights, while raising awareness about the injustice of gender discrimination that is still rampant around the world. The Global Fund for Women’s work is grounded in the mission to win rights for women while changing laws and policies by supporting the efforts of women’s groups. The Junior League is constantly

working to empower women to lead while fighting for women’s rights, girl’s rights, and a better future for all people.

We know that the relationships we build with other women’s organizations and activists is helping us make history. By providing a platform for influential women to speak at our annual conferences, we give women a way to share their stories and lead the narrative. We have had the privilege of hosting speakers like Noor Tagouri, Muniba Mazari, Cheryl Strayed, Aimee Mullins, Carlotta Walls Lanier, and so many more.

If one single truth can be highlighted looking back, it is simply that women’s issues are everyone’s issues.

Women’s rights are human rights, and nothing will be more impactful in our efforts than empowering women to take action, tell their stories, and fight for their rights.

As we acknowledge the monumental significance of last year’s monumental celebration of 100 years of women voting for what we believe due to the 19th Amendment and the 25 year anniversary of the Beijing platform for action during Women’s History Month.

The Junior League will continue to work steadfastly to promote women’s civic leadership and teen self-esteem throughout the US, Canada, the UK, and Mexico, and AJLI hopes that you will you make your mark on women’s history by joining them.

I know I’m always pushing candles (guilty!

I’m obsessed!), but there’s nothing quite like Nest’s most classic scent – Bamboo.

I honestly burn this scent all year round, but I imagine it shines the brightest in the Spring. Bamboo smells like fresh, clean laundry with a floral, tropical twist, and I always get asked “what is that scent?” when someone comes over. Nest candles are also some of the most affordable in my book, in terms of quality – so I don’t feel guilty using them as my “everyday” candle. It also makes a great gift, as many of my friends have come to know!

I discovered this line by chance, amidst my quest for totally clean but efficacious cleaning products.

Puracy products have great reviews, but it wasn’t until I used them myself (on my dishes and countertops) that I was truly impressed. While some products claim to have clean ingredients, they do absolutely nothing in practice. Both the countertop spray and the dish soap have light, bright scents in the form of essential oil blends but pack a powerful punch when put to work. I am truly impressed!

Assouline Miami Beach Who doesn’t want to get away these days? As travel plans continue to be quashed by the pandemic, I would like to offer up Assouline’s array of getaway-inspired coffee-table books. Beaumont Children’s Museum and The Junior League of Beaumont Collaboration Continues to be Magical

S

tory Time with the Junior League of Beaumont hosted by the Beaumont Children's Museum kicked off on Facebook Live every Sunday starting this past October. Families were invited to log onto their computer at 7:00 pm every Sunday for the month of October and November to enjoy a bedtime story read by a Junior League Member.

When the collaboration with the Beaumont Children’s Museum first began, it was uncertain whether the Sunday readings would continue beyond October and November. However, the reception was such that as of right now, the tradition has continued through March!

Members of the League have volunteered their time since October to read a book to children. To participate, members purchase a new book to be read each Sunday along with a toy to go along with the book to “add to the magic” of the book they are reading. After reading the story, The Junior League volunteer will then pick a name at random from those

families who comment on Facebook Live with their child’s name. The winner of the drawing will win the book read by the volunteer along with the accompanying “magic adding” toy.

March 7th , active member Maegan Collins read the funny book called “Never Let a Unicorn Scribble” by Diane Alber for the Beaumont Children’s Museum on LIVE video.

These personal and interactive readings are important because scientists say reading to children every day exposes them to around 78,000 words each year — and up to 1.4 million words by the time they reach 5 years old! The Junior League of Beaumont’s members on the Beaumont Children’s Museum committee are tapping into how powerful that research is. But in the age of Covid-19, the group has had to get creative for story time, and the Junior League of Beaumont is certainly proud to add magic to a Child’s life during this difficult time.

I am thirty-two years old, I was born in Gary, Indiana, and I am the oldest of five children. My family and I moved to Port Arthur, Texas in 1996 and have now resided in Beaumont, Texas for the last ten years.

I am married to the best man in the world, Jarvis Taylor, and have been an accomplished licensed cosmetologist for 11+ years, the co-owner of De’ Luxe Cheveux Salon, and owner of Isle-9 Shoetique. I am a woman of action with tangible results regardless of the task. I have given back to my community for over thirteen years, leading, hosting, and assisting in non-profit events.

I decided to become a CASA volunteer because there are children who need an advocate and mentor. I believe that it takes a village to raise a child. Not only do I want to be an advocate for the children, but I also want to help strengthen parents so they can become better parents. pringtime brings back memories of the Junior League of Beaumont’s Gourmet Kitchen Tour of Homes. The successful fundraiser featured the most beautiful homes in Beaumont. Visitors on the tour viewed gorgeous indoor kitchens, stunning dining rooms, and exquisite outdoor entertainment areas. Recipes from the JLB Cookbooks were featured at each location, and visitors were exposed to the best food and hospitality. The event ended about ten years ago, but the tradition lives on each spring with JLB members opening their homes to friends and family for holidays and events.

BRUNCH

M

embers of the Junior League of Beaumont are experts at preparing for events. Springtime in Southeast Texas offers wonderful opportunities to exercise those entertaining and party planning skills with holidays, celebrations, and fun filled weekends. The JLB’s Dining Without Reservations and Lagniappe cookbooks are the perfect guide to menu planning for the busy season.

Many of the recipes can be easily made with pre-prepared ingredients, made ahead of time for quick reheating, or in an Instant Pot or slow cooker.

The cookbooks offer options to create delicious menus for any occasion with little prep-time. Overnight French Toast and Egg Casserole are both wonderful, easy options for an elegant brunch. Assembling the French Toast the night before saves prep time and makes it easy to simply pop it in the oven. You’ll have thirty minutes of baking, giving you time to focus on other tasks. The Egg Casserole requires very little prep-work and can be baked in the oven or cooked in an Instant Pot! Either way, it’s an easy, quick recipe that looks like it took hours to make!

- 8 Eggs - 1/3 Cup Orange Juice - 4/3 Cup Half and Half - 1/4 Teaspoon Salt - 1 Teaspoon Vanilla - 1/4 Cup Melted Butter - 1 Loaf French Bread or Brioche, Sliced or Torn/Cut in pieces DIRECTIONS: In a medium mixing bowl, beat eggs. Add orange juice, half and half, salt, and vanilla and mix well. Pour melted butter in a shallow baking dish, spread butter to coat the bottom. Place bread slices, or bread pieces to evenly cover the dish. Pour egg mixture over the bread. Cover and chill overnight.

Remove cover and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

- 5 slices of white bread or French bread - 1 ½ cps of shredded cheddar cheese - 5 eggs - 1 ½ cups of milk - Salt and pepper to taste - Cubed ham or cooked breakfast sausage This recipe, on page 108 of JLB’s Lagniappe Cookbook, is a perfect quick recipe to compliment any brunch.

DIRECTIONS: Line the bottom of a casserole dish or soufflé dish with bread, cover with cheese. Add slightly beaten eggs to milk and pour over cheese and bread. Top with ham or cooked sausage. Bake in oven at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or cook in Instant Pot. If cooked in Instant Pot, place trivet in Instant Pot, add one cup of water into the pot.

Place the soufflé dish in the Instant Pot, on top of the trivet. Cover with foil. Cook on Manual for 35 minutes. Let pressure release naturally for ten minutes, quick release and serve.

Your hometown: Stephenville, TX How long have you lived in Beaumont?

One and a half years Education: Undergrad in Child Development and Family Living and a Masters in Social Work, both from SFA! Axe ‘Em!!

Occupation: Mental Health Coordinator for the Jefferson County Correctional Facility Hobbies: Traveling by boat or plane with friends, cooking in my new kitchen, and currently planning my March 13th wedding.

Family: Myself and my soon to be husband, Brock Allen.

Pets: My pride and joy, Dixie May. She is a goldador. Her mother was a golden retriever, and her father was a black lab.

What other volunteer or community organizations are you involved in and why?

I also volunteer with Harvest House. I was in my junior year of my undergrad when I learned about human trafficking.

I decided to throw myself into the research. I ended up speaking about trafficking at a Texas wide conference and I won the Graduate Research Conference for my research in sexual assault on college campuses. I want to help out however I can, and I believe that this is a great start in a new town.

What did you aspire to be as a child?

Ha. This one is funny. When I was 7, I told my mom I wanted to be a tattoo artist. I hated needles and all things pain. Then I became obsessed with CSI Miami and knew that I wanted to not only help people but be in the field of criminal justice.

Who has influenced your life the most?

Maya Angelou and Temple Grandin. I love both of them for their outlook on life. Temple Grandin gives such meaning to the way that we handle the different outcomes that we are

given in life. While Maya Angelou is just such a way with words. She gives them power and makes you think about tough topics in a way that pulls at your heart strings and makes you want to do better in life.

Favorite thing about Texas: The simplicity. Texas is a rare find. I loved growing up on a cattle ranch where you could look for what seemed like miles in every direction and you would see nothing but open fields and tree lined fences. It allowed you the freedom to discover the world without all the clutter.

What accomplishments are you most proud of?

I am most proud of the person I have become. I have done so much in my life such as living in another country, getting two degrees, and moving all over the US all before I was 25.

At 18, I thought that I would get a job that “paid the bills”, live in my small hometown and never leave. I am so glad that I made myself branch out and try new things.

What are you passionate about?

Exploring. I am always down for an adventure and going somewhere new and exciting.

What inspired you to join the League?

I am new to the area and wanted to find a group of amazing and supportive women that would allow me to blossom in my new town.

What is your favorite League project and why?

So far my favorite was Main Street Market. I loved that we were able to host it during the pandemic. I think it was the break that everyone needed during this tough time. I am also very glad we were able to help all of the small businesses. I cannot wait for next years.

What is your favorite thing to do in Southeast Texas?

Try out all of the new restaurants. My fiancé and I moved from Lake Charles so it has been fun experiencing all that Beaumont has to offer.

What is the last thing you binge-watched?

Big Bang Theory. I cannot get enough of Sheldon!

What is your favorite quote?

“My mission in life is to not merely survive, but to thrive and do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor and some style”- Maya Angelou If you had to pick a cocktail that best describes you, what would it be and why?

I would say probably a Long Island Iced Tea because I have so much going on in my life, but I always make it work in the best of it to have the best outcomes.

What is your dream vacation?

I would love to go to Bali during the color festival.

What is one thing you cannot live without?

Half and Half tea What is your idea of de-stressing?

You can’t go wrong with a good bubble bath and candles.

Or If it has really been an intense week, I love to get together

with my girlfriends, grab dinner and hit up the local reflexology for a 1-hour foot massage.

Who has influenced your life the most?

My mom – she’s the strongest person I know.

Who would you like to play you in a movie about your life?

Probably J-Law! I think she is so funny and real.

Favorite thing about Texas: The friendliness of everyone.

If you were a superhero, what would be your superhero name and power?

I don’t know what my superhero name would be, but I am sure my power would have to do with being able to clean my entire home, top to bottom, in less than 5 minutes haha!

IF YOU WOKE UP TOMORROW AS AN ANIMAL, What animal would you want to be and why?

My dog. She is literally the most spoiled thing in the world.

She just lays around, gets the good human food and gets to travel with us everywhere we go. She honestly has it so rough.

What accomplishments are you most proud of?

Working on my second graduate degree as a gemologist!

What are you passionate about?

Helping others What inspired you to join the League?

I was working as a vendor at Main Street Market and I had the opportunity to meet a number of women from the league. After seeing the work the junior league does for the community I knew that it was something I wanted to be involved in.

What is your favorite League project and why?

Healthy Behaviors! I love our mission and the positive impact it has on children in the community.

What is your favorite thing to do in Southeast Texas?

Eat at many of our famous local restaurants!

I have been involved in numerous organizations off and on for years including Jefferson County Bar Auxiliary, American Red Cross, Gift of Life. Spindletop Rollergirls and more! I believe in giving back to your community and if I can be of service to others, sign me up. The variety of organizations also allowed me to meet people with different backgrounds and interests as well as have a purpose outside of being a stay at home mom and wife.

What did you aspire to be as a child?

Teacher, Marine Biologist, Journalist, Graphic Designer then Ag Teacher. My original major was Journalism until one day I walked past a door that said Ag Journalism and I switched my major that day. I was able to focus on both my interests.

Favorite movie or book? Paper or e-reader?

Favorite Movie Clueless, Book =I don’t have a favorite book.

I read so much I use Overdrive to check out e-readers or download recommendations using BookBub. Who has influenced your life the most?

My parents definitely instilled in me the importance of being honest, loyal, hard working. I had 3 HS teachers, Mrs. Johnson, Mr. Wilson and Mr. Pavelock, who truly made an impact by creating a passion for journalism, FFA and agriculture advocacy. They had confidence in my abilities before I had it within myself and all three encouraged me to set goals and high expectations, continuing to support me long after high school. I have to say my husband as well because he has always supported everything I choose to do.

What inspired you to join the League?

I was new to Beaumont and didn’t know anyone plus Jason came home with a form from his law firm and told me basically I had to join....and I am so glad I did. The league has been an integral role in shaping the person I am today.

What is your favorite League project and why?

I enjoyed DIAD my 3rd league year because we worked with a variety of organizations such as Hotel Beaumont, Some Other Place, The Salvation Army. The Family Resource Center, The Garth House and more! It was a great snippet into our community.

What is the last thing you binge-watched?

The best vacation we had as a family was to the Caymans when the kids were small. It was a short flight, easy to get around and lots to do.

What is one thing you cannot live without?

Coffee and lots of water!

What is your idea of de-stressing?

Going for a walk and listening to a podcast Who would you like to play you in a movie about your life?

Provisional SUPER SATURDAY

O

n November 14, the provisionals participated in “Super Saturday,” along with their mentors and leaders. The day was filled with all things “JLB” and included several presentations from actives regarding membership, placement, and JLB history. Provisionals were divided into teams to mix and mingle amongst various mentor groups. First, each team was challenged to develop a structure using only marshmallows, noodles, and tape; it was definitely quality bonding time that highlighted the creativity, leadership, and talents amongst the provisionals! After, each team raced the clock to set out on a JLB themed scavenger hunt, which led them to various local historic sites affiliated with JLB as well as several active members’ front doors!

Provisional CHRISTMAS PROJECT

During the month of December, the provisionals developed and executed a plan to bring Christmas cheer to locals in need. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, normal Christmas visitations and programs typically welcomed in nursing home facilities were prohibited. It was decided that surrounding nursing home residents would be the focus of the project.

Provisionals organized donated items such as socks, crossword booklets, lotions, and Christmas cards into gift bags for the residents. Over 100 gift bags were delivered to residents at the College Street Health Care Center in Beaumont and the Gulf Healthcare Center in Port Arthur.

REMEMBERING LUM EDWARDS The Junior League of Beaumont sends its sympathies to Sustainer Allison Edwards Brocato and Active Sarah Wells for the loss of Lum Edwards III, brother to Allison and uncle to Sarah. Lum was the son of the late Sustainer Mary Ann Edwards and the brother of the late Active Catherine Edwards.

Lum was involved in civic and volunteer work in the community. Along with being on the Board of Magnolia Cemetery, being a member of the Rotary Club of Beaumont, mentoring in the “I Have a Dream” Foundation of Beaumont, and serving as a ROAR Volunteer. Lum also sat on the Board of the Southeast Texas Family Resource Center, which his father, Lum Jr., helped find and was also on their Board. The Family Resource Center provides many services to the CharltonPollard neighborhood and surrounding communities, including after school and summer programs for children, computer literacy classes, and information for senior citizens.
