Fall 2023

SVDP Awarded $2M VA Grant to Serve Veterans Experiencing Homelessness

Beginning in early 2024, St. Vincent de Paul of Baltimore will provide services to veterans experiencing homelessness, thanks to a recent $2 million grant by the Department of Veterans Affairs under its Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program. Veterans Housing Services will help 225 veteran families annually in Baltimore City and County who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness with rapid re-housing and other supportive services.

“St. Vincent de Paul has been a leader in Baltimore over the past three decades in serving individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. We are excited to have been selected by the Department of Veterans Affairs for this opportunity and look forward to expanding our rapid re-housing services to address the specific needs of veterans

and their families,” said John Schiavone, President & CEO of St. Vincent de Paul of Baltimore.

SVDP will collaborate with other veteran services providers to conduct outreach and ensure that veteran families are identified, aware of services offered, and connected with SSVF and other veteran resources. SVDP will offer case management, short to medium term rental assistance, housing search and placement and service linkages for health, mental health, and somatic health services, employment and legal support, and VA benefits.

Baltimore P.O.W.E.R. Group Sponsors Giving Event for Head Start Families

In October, the Baltimore P.O.W.E.R. Group sponsored a Giving Event for SVDP’s Head Start program. Led by Stacey Berman and Debbie Heaver, the P.O.W.E.R Group sorted and packed 600 bags of food at our Somerset Head Start location. $24,000 worth of food was distributed to 200 Head Start families and members of the Old Town neighborhood.

Rolisa Carter, Case Manager, Sarah’s Hope

Rolisa Carter is a dedicated case manager at our Sarah’s Hope Family Shelter, bringing expertise along with an empathetic approach to helping those in need. Rolisa takes the time to engage in meaningful conversations to gain insight into each client’s unique experiences and needs. Building rapport and trust is central to her work, and she approaches everyone without judgement, creating an environment where they feel comfortable and safe opening up.

She understands that the path to stability can be challenging but believes that no matter the situation, there is a home for everyone. Rolisa goes the extra mile, finding resources for her clients and researching housing opportunities she finds in the community. “I don’t do the work for them, but I connect them with the resources they need and let them know I am there for them throughout the process.”

For Rolisa, the most rewarding moments are when clients successfully secure housing. When a client receives the life-changing news of a housing match, Rolisa shares in their joy – and often, their tears of happiness. Rolisa encourages her clients to persevere, stay positive, and seek additional support services such as counseling to ensure they maintain stable housing. “I love what I do. It’s so rewarding to know that I have helped someone.”
