Why I don’t have a license: Graham’s tell-all

I do not have a driver’s license. I should, but I do not. And this is why.

When I finished driver’s ed last summer, I received my learner’s permit, which allowed me to drive only with a licensed driver in the passenger seat.

Over the next few months, I was to continue my practice, and record the times I was driving in a log. In order to receive Graham Winger my restricted license from Reporter the DMV, I had to rack up 50 total hours of driving time, 10 of which took place at night, and turn in my parent-signed log in December.

Overall, I probably drove about three hours

total before December rolled around, and I did absolutely no night driving or highway driving.

A few things contributed to this: My fear of responsibility in the case of an accident, my laziness, my constant misplacement of my permit, which I was afraid to drive without. Unlike a lot of people, I didn’t care that much for driving. Don’t take this the wrong way, I’m not a bad driver. At least, that’s what I’m told. Or rather, was told. I haven’t driven in, like, two months. The last thing I drove was a golf cart.

I wasn’t real forward-thinking; that’s the problem. If I was, I would’ve realized the freedom that comes with a license, and taken every chance I’d gotten to “hone my skills” (like I was supposed to). But no. I just let everyone else do the driving for me.

Man, I was selfish back then. So long ago. Oh, how the 10 months have flown by. I’ve really changed since then. I wear glasses

now. I’m what the kids call “an intellectual”.

However, I can’t escape my past. I still haven’t been to the DMV, not even once. Sometimes, I dream about the fabled waiting times, or the storied sluggishness of the workers.

Will I never feel the blinding flash of the DMV camera? The cold, hard plastic of the rectangle confirming my permission as well as my identity? The liberty of driving alone on the open road, wind in my ears, hands on the wheel, foot on the gas, smile on my face? Am I doomed to a life of public transportation and cycling? Oh, I should hope not!

I know one day I’ll get my hands on a license. And when I do… well… not much would change. Jokes aside, I’ll still probably let other people drive me around. But hey, it’s another step in life, albeit one I should’ve taken already. I’d rather not miss it, lest it trips me farther down.

Well, there goes that dream...

The daunting question of how one will pay for college is enough to make you want to curl up in your bed with the covers over your head and stay there with a carton of ice cream until you’ve cried all your problems away, or maybe that’s just me.

This excruciating process of filling out application after application and then being forced to sit and wait for answers that some- Taylor Herman times never come, Reporter should be comparable to a type of mind-game torture tactic that can leave students feeling helpless.

Why does a desire to better one’s life have to result in them being a victim of massive debt for the rest of their life?

Is it wrong for people of less financial privilege to crave an opportunity to make their future brighter?

The more I become overwhelmed by numbers being thrown in my face everyday, the answer seems to move closer and closer to yes.

As someone who grew up in a single parent household that got by from paycheck to paycheck I never really pictured myself as someone who would go off to a big university and do the “full college experience”. However, as I got older, the idea of leaving home to get my degree

became very appealing.

My search of possibilities ended up with me developing a list of five schools to tour. Every university I saw was amazing in its own way, but nothing came close to giving me the excitement that Washington State gave me. WSU not only has the two degrees I plan to pursue and an exciting campus with outstanding faculty, they also have opportunities to travel, earn top internships, and a highly diverse group of students.

Being there felt like paradise. Nothing there felt like it wasn’t perfect for me––that is until I saw the price tag.

Let me begin by saying that the concept of “out-of-state tuition” is the absolute dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Why should I be penalized thousands of dollars only because I wasn’t raised in the state with the college that best fit me?

Yes I know it’s because of taxes, and sure it makes sense for an increase of maybe $1,000$3,000 but it is ridiculous that states are allowed to increase the amount by $10,000-$20,000 a year!

College is about exploring new things, becoming cultured, and seeing what the world has to offer. This can’t be achieved in a very high degree if kids are forced to stay home another four years because it’s all they can afford. Also what if the state you’re born in doesn’t offer many opportunities to enter the career field you desire. Are you supposed to just move away on your own with a mountain of debt and compete for jobs against students that have completed internships and built relationships through their

college’s networking?

Yeah let me know how that works out.

According to just about everyone, my senior year is supposed to be one of the best years of my life, but I’m only a couple of months into it and haven’t been able to find exactly where the fun fits in.

In order to be an appealing candidate and stand out in the highly competitive arena of scholarship applications, students are expected to balance a thousand things at once. We must take upper level classes all while trying to maintain the 4.0 GPA that’s necessary to stand out academically.

However, everyone knows good grades and challenging course aren’t enough. Students must also figure out how to juggle sports, a job, clubs, finding opportunities to volunteer and show that they’re a valuable part of society, but all of that still doesn’t seem like enough.

Why does our education system have to put so much pressure on students to be perfect? Should a lack of one aspect on an application be the reason that an outstanding student is overlooked?

As I sit here in my bed crying my worries away, my supposedly amazing senior year is ticking away along with my that innocent perspective that in the end everything will work out.

I have that disconcerting feeling in my stomach that I’ll come up short in the end. It makes one wonder if it is all really worth it, or if there’s a better way for this process to occur?

Until someone comes up with a solution, I’ll be stuck here eating, crying and praying that my numbers will be selected in the next lottery.

Juniors:

Brace yourselves for the ACT We’ve been testing since we were five years old. For most of us, we survive the test, and don’t think much about it again.

Much to my surprise there is one test that just can’t be ignored.

The beast of all tests.

The ACT. Some students will Jacey Fillinger forget about Reporter the ACT until right before, and then cram in all the studying you can before that agonizing day that just can’t be avoided.

For some, this test is life or death. For others, it’s just a day spent not going to class.

When I took the ACT I showed up with all the appropriate items to get me through: coffee, water, pretzels, cereal, and a calculator. Lucky for me, no one had mentioned the only thing allowed was a water bottle, a pencil, and a calculator.

They herded everyone into the gym like sheep, put all of us in separate lines and lead us to the separate rooms to test. I felt as though I were in kindergarten, but wasn’t lucky enough to be the line leader.

After, you realize you may have answered all the questions but only knew about half, and are completely exhausted. They decide to just send you back to class, as if the day wasn’t dreadful enough.

Everything is fine for a few weeks, but then the test scores arrive, and upon opening them, the idea of a retake automatically pops into your mind. For some the ACT determines the cost of college, or even clarifies if college is an option all all.

As I said, this is no Chemistry test. It’s much worse.

So Juniors, test day is creeping up on you faster than you know.

May the force be with you during your future days of sorrow.

Missoula hosts annual Festival of the Dead

On Nov. 2, 2016, the streets and shops of downtown Missoula were filled with spooky skeleton faces and smiles all around. The coffee shops and diners were filled with the anticipation for the Festival of the Dead.

Then it began. The streets flooded with painted faces, giant skeletons, crafts, and carts. Bands from the U.M. and Stevensville played. Businesses promoted themselves while holding signs. People showed their support for certain things and some people protest. The crowd was full of wondering faces, young and old, looking upon the parade for their first or last time.

The Day of the Dead is a three-day festival in Mexico. For three days families and friends all around gather to remember loved ones who have passed on. They go to their graves and clean them, pray, and sometimes put shrines in front of them. Even though the tradition originated in Mexico, it is now celebrated all around the world. Countries include Belgium, France, New Zealand, Australia,

Sentinel’s Japan club, run by history teacher Drew Burfeind, hosted 16 japanese exchange students from October 30th through November 6th. Sentinel is sister schools with Kaishin High School located in Kumamoto, Japan. The exchange between Missoula students and Kumamoto, Japan students occurs every year. The night the exchange students arrived in Missoula, it was very nerve racking for the hosting families. The plane landed around 9:30 p.m. and the Japan club members finally got to meet their host students. The language barrier was intimidating due to the lack understanding each other’s native languages.

Throughout the week, the Japan club members made the exchange students try to feel as much at home as they could. They took the exchange students on tours around Missoula, showed them major areas of the town and showed them how they live their day to day lives. Drew Burfeind set up barbecues, dinners, and hangouts for all of the host stu-

dents and the exchange students to warm up to each other. By the end of the week, the host students and exchange students seemed as though they had known one another for years.

On Thursday, November 3, Sentinel had an assembly recognizing the fall sports and introducing the Japanese exchange students.

While introducing the students, Emma Skousen, President of Japan club, gave the Supervisor of the exchange students $350 that the Japan club members raised. April 16, 2016, Kumamoto, Japan had a devastating earthquake that ruined the entire town. Many families lost their homes and family members, and caused tremendous sadness. Because Kaishin High School is Sentinel’s sister school, the Japan club decided to hold a bake sale to raise money for their fellow Japanese friends. The club managed to raise $350 which is equivalent to about 37,000 Japanese Yen. Japan club wasn’t exactly sure what was going to happen when the exchange students would come, but they developed good friendships and had a blast showing them around and introducing them to a new culture they had never experienced before.

Sentinel Student Government hosts Fireside Dance

of the Sentinel Konah This year Sentinel revived the traditional semi-formal fall school dance Fireside, hosted by Sentinels own student government, and with the help of Lisa Anderson and Erika Martin. Sentinel hadn’t had Firesides in a couple years but the student government really wanted to bring it back since students at Sentinel are excited for school dances this year. Fireside was a huge success and student government was able to raise a good amount of money from it. The money will be distributed around the school, it will be used to sponsor families for christmas, buy all the supplies for the pep assembly, and put on other dances such as homecoming.

Chlöe Andrews a Senior at Sentinel said “It was a lot of fun, I got to see a bunch of my friends that don’t usually go out and do stuff, but since it was our senior year we all went out and had fun together.”

Spartan Volleyball State Champs for first time in 28 years

p Aston Kinsella tof the Sentinel Konah s . It has been 28 years since Sentinel last dwon the state title, under the tutelage of head dcoach Deb Thompson, and they have finally .done it again with the current coach Erin Kef-fler.

- The Spartans have gone undefeated all eseason with a 25-0 win record and have only ,lost a total of three conference sets. The team -focused on winning it all from the very start -of the season, with three goals in mind: findish the regular season as conference champinons, be undefeated, and to win state. All three -were accomplished by the end of the final set eagainst Billings Senior. e With their final regular season victory -over the Flathead Bravettes just before Halloween, the team would celebrated their vicstory on the bus ride home knowing their first sgoal had just been accomplished––they were -first place in the Western Conference, securding their bid to the State Tournament as the ynumber one seed.

On the bye week heading into the tournament, he team did not have it easy as coaching staff Erin Keffler, Colleen Froehlich, Tian Harrington, Deb Thompson, Karen Umbaugh, and Bri O’Learey Bustillos pushed the girls hard.

At the tournament, which ran Nov. 10 and 12 in Bozeman, the Spartans first trounced Billings Skyview, winning easily in three sets, 25-13, 25-15, and 25-18. With their win the players would face off against long time

rivals Bozeman Hawks later that evening in a rematch of last year’s championship match.

Winning the first set 25-20 the players felt confident of their win.

Yet, going into the second set the Spartans couldn’t get their groove, and at one point were down 17-9, but with hard pressed blocks and kills by Shelby Schweyen and steady serving by Elsa Godwin, the Spartans would go on to win the neck and neck set 30-28.

Even though Bozeman took the third set 25-16, he Spartans fought back hard in the final set winning 25-15, putting them into one

of the top spots for the state title.

With their two wins on opening day, the Spartans had only one match on day two against Billings Senior.

After a hard fought three sets, winning 2518, 26-24, and 25-23, the Spartans earned a trip to the last day of the tournament, putting them one step closer to the coveted state title.

On November 12, the Spartans gathered on the court to face off once again against Billings Senior after their semi-final victory over the Glacier Wolfpack who would finish 3rd overall. The match started off strong for

the Spartans winning their first set, 25-14.

After dropping the second set 19-25, only the third set lost all season, they battled back to win 25-22, 25-21.

In the final points of the match the Spartans were on their feet in anticipation.

And with a final block by senior middle Tizzy Weida the players stormed the court as cheers echoed in the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse as the team’s final goals of going undefeated and winning the state title were realized.

Soccer brings home hardware: Boys 2nd, Girls 3rd Zoë Beck

of the Sentinel Konah The Sentinel soccer teams’ hard work paid off at the 2016 AA State Soccer tournament.

Both teams competed in Kalispell Oct. 27-29.

While neither boys nor girls finished as well as they would have liked, they represented Sentinel well, earning a second place finish for boys and a third for girls.

The boys beat out Billings West 4-0 on Thursday and Bozeman 2-1 on Friday to earn a spot in the championship match against Hellgate. It was an emotional game on Saturday with the state championship and crosstown rivalries on the line.

Hellgate took first place with 3-2 win over Sentinel, a tough loss for the team. As Coach Dan Lochridge points out, however, the Sen-

tinel Spartans had not beaten Bozeman in years or come this close to first place. So despite missing out on the title, it was a successful season for the team, and a fitting sendoff for the nine senior boys.

The girls teams also had an impressive run. They won their opening bid against Billings Skyview 1-0 on Thursday in a shootout, then lost to Bozeman 3-0 on Friday. On Saturday they earned 3rd place with a win over

Billings West 2-1.

The girls’ team also has nine outgoing seniors this season, but they expect to be strong next year as well. Both teams hope to match or exceed their performance in the coming seasons, but are satisfied with the 2016-17 season.
