Proposing the Market of the Future introduces a system of urban farming through robotic automation.

The process of food production utilizes the system hydroponics. Unlike conventional farmer’s market, hydroponics cultivates a variety of vegetables, fruits and herbs, in controlled temperature, moisture and minerals, to farm only the highest quality produce.

Within a controlled environment, the production facility is able to bring the optimum freshness to the surrounding community, promoting better health within the bustling City of Toronto. The market is designed to house the functionality of the Food Production Facility right next to the market for selling.

Identifying a market consists of studying how markets “make”, “unmake”, and thus “remake” society.

PARTI The design proposal focuses on promoting permeability through the site while creating a horizontal and vertical suspense of the Food Production Facility and market to create a language for the market of the future.

The design proposal aims to underline existing problems of the market of not having enough land for fresh produce due to urbanization, the growth of population and ultimately the scarcity of sustainable production. Hence, the proposal of the Food Production Facility is achieved through vertical farming using the agricultural system of hydroponics. It is a system that cultivates fresh produce vertically by new agricultural methods, which combines the design of building and farms all together in a high-rise building inside the cities. This system is sustainable as hydroponics agriculture only requires optimum light, humidity, and nutrients being controlled for maximum crop yield.

This technology is manifested within both the agricultural technique and architectural tectonics.

FOOD PRODUCTION FACILITY

The Food Production Facility is functioning by a completely automated operation using sensors and actuators – interaction of systems without human interference. There is a database which covers every information about the crops and the probable diseases. Even in conditions where the crops grow inside buildings, there is a need for outdoor weather when the ventilation system is taken into account. Information about the weather is gained from weather forecast in real time and based on this information appropriate decisions can be made. Information about the context is required to make the right decisions about selecting the controller. Knowing about the amounts of crops to be produced as well as probable diseases significantly affect the creation of a healthy environment for growing food preventing diseases.

Within each of the towers, there are sensors and actuators that will record and transfer data to the operating room regarding any technical difficulties from the robotic system or any germination deficiency such as an unhealthy or diseased plant that needs to be brought to attention.. Within each tower, there are pipings for water supply from water tanks above each hydroponic tower as well as UV lighting system.

4. WATER SUPPLY (WATER TANK + PUMPS)

The water system is a sustainable system within the Facility as the water supply is recyclable. The system of recycling water comes from the supply of rainwater, snow, grey water and used hydroponic water collection and is brought into the basement of the building through a piping system that will collect the waste water into a reservoir. Then, processes such as heat pasteurization of heating and cooling the water will kill the bacteria and disinfect the water to be reused. Another system within the building is a UV disinfection where the water is being treated to kill harmful microorganisms in the water before being supplied back into the food production facility. If the water quality is insufficient to be reused, the system will generate fertilizers to be sold. The water that is being supplied back into the Food Production Facility is funneled into a cistern and pumped to the water tank above each hydroponic towers from which the water will then slowly fall down and irrigate the crops through gravity force.

3. ARTIFICIAL LIGHT (UV LED BULBS)

Maximum daylight will be brought it from the south sun. Sensors on the tower will monitor the intensity of daylight concentration. However sunlight mostly gets reflected on the glass surfaces so during the times when the sun intensity is low, or during the night, artificial lighting using LED bulbs or HPS (High-Pressure Sodium) bulbs installed around the railing of these hydroponic systems will provide a range of light intensity to help the growth of vegetation.

2. RACKING

With each cell being automatically planted with seeds, a railing system will transport each hydroponic tubes into the towers and a racking system will allow for the stacking of each of these tubes into the tower.

1. SEEDING

Supplies such as seeds for planting are stored in the storage room, next to a robotic arm that will automatically plant seeds into the allocated spaces in the hydroponic cells.

5. GERMINATION

With each hydroponic tubes being filled with seed, the water (w nutrients) will be pumped accordingly to the type of produce and at an optimum rate as it circulates itself around the Food Production tower until it is full-grown.

6. HEALING

On the second floor, between both volumes of the Food Production Facility is an operations room. This is where all the monitoring of data happens. Within this room, there is also a railing system from both the east and the west facility to transport any hydroponic tube with plants that needs special care.

7. PACKAGING/SELLING

The railing system extends into the market space to transport hydroponic tubes with fresh produce that is ready to be arranged and package. This is done within the allocated spaces in the market. The railing system will continuously supply each stall with produce and return empty tubes to be stored on the storage rack.

Stalls are arranged in a way for maximum public and vendors interaction while also being able to see the railing system transporting fresh produce from within the Food Production Facility.

Working under the Heritage Preservation Act of Ontario, Trinity Spirits has sentimental qualities along which acquires an integration of modern and heritage characters. The abandoned building along with its stretch of parking lot will then turn into a space for brewing, tasting and retailing Whiskey and Vodka. Taking apart the existing building, the remaining firewalls brings heritage qualities to the spaces created within and around.

Trinity Spirits focuses on expressing and celebrating the notion of distilling alcohol. A feature stairs within the atrium wraps itself from the entrance, around the distillery and to the restaurant, surrounded by distilling artifacts. Allowing the “Trinity Experience” to be visually available through the perimeters of the atrium. The building also features a retail for products of the distillery, a bar in the heritage still tower, a restaurant and a rooftop patio.

ZONING BY-LAW SETBACK Abiding to the 7.5m setback from the lot line, the maximum allowable height limit, and easement path.

HERITAGE DESIGNATION Under the heritage preservation of Ontario, both facades on Mill St. (historic still tower) and Trinity St. (2 brick firewalls) have to be preserved within the refurbishment of 18 Trinity St. These wall are firewalls that house F1 and F2 occupancy of the building.

ATRIUM STAIRCASE The atrium staircase corresponds in accentuating the existing site axis into the building to address major circulation. The staircase is design in accordance to the Ontario Building Code of Section 3 and Section 9.

BAR STAIRCASE Similarly to the atrium stairs, the character of the stairs is designed to contrast the holistic heritage atmosphere in the still tower.

COPPER SOFFIT AND CEMENT CLADDING PANELS (WEST ENTRANCE) Cement cladding panels are used to highlight the new construction part of the building envelope. Both West and South entrances are cladded with copper panels to bring the essence of new light into the old building. Similarly the choice of materiality creates an identity for Trinity Spirits as it reflects the copper material of the distillers.

HERITAGE STILL TOWER The second feature developed for Trinity Spirits is the bar and restaurant that sits within the heritage still tower. This highlights the sentimental qualities of its heritage language and values in contrast to the contemporary design of staircase in the atrium and the adjacent restaurant.

The lintels supporting the 1917 openings and main self-support system of the historical wall are the 4 pilasters (600x370mm) spaced at 4m. The pilasters create the transverse structural grid for the still tower, and the columns align with them. The two end pilasters are attached to the other load bearing historic walls on the east and west side of the old tower. Within the tower, a new system of beams and girders braces the historic wall. The wall itself does not carry any new load other than itself.

LU M I NAT O FE S T I VAL Luminato is Toronto’s annual festival wholly dedicated to the celebration of the arts. For its 10th birthday in 2016, Luminato paired up with PARTISANS to convert the decommissioned Hearn Generating Station into a venue for the festival. This conversion would become the catalyst for creative thinking.

Microcosm proposes to transform the Hearn Generating Station into a micro-city composed of modular multipurpose spaces. This conglomeration of spaces include artist and maker studios, live/work spaces and urban agriculture. With the integration of ‘hyper loops’ and transit tubes, the Hearn will become a cultural mega-structure that reconnects to the city of Toronto. This revitalization was imagined by students in collaboration with Partisans design firm for the 2016 Luminato Festival.

The Hearn is envisioned acting as a hub on the outskirts of the metropolis.

HYPERLOOPS Hyperloops are the chosen method of transporting in and out of the Hearn, able to get from downtown Toronto to the station in less than a minute.

TESSALIGHT In our advanced digital age, social media dictates our communication on a daily basis. Its multifaceted functions, conveniences, and abstract motivations cause people, especially teenagers, to communicate with each other online rather than in person. This aspect diminishes any notion of the physical engagement in these relationships, and strictly converts into a static form of communication.

With TessaLight, we envision a technique through installation that recreates an abstract representation of the language of contemporary communication. TessaLight allows people on each end of the installation to communicate with each other using their flashlight on their cellphones. With the structure eliminating any visual connections, thus virtually communicating through engaging in an activity. Much like how we engage through online relationships, a virtual engagement. The lack of direct communication and visual engagement between people is the main theme of the installation, which is explored through the use of light.

Design options were explored and critical details were resolved. Random distribution of points according to parabolic function, creating high-density in the middle.
