The Platform
Newport Railway Museum
Located at 26 Champion Rd, Newport Victoria, the proposed project has the goal of rejuvenating the area of residential and partial industrial Newport. The site was selected due to its footprint on industry sites, yet private ownership in addition to it acting as a perfect location to reshape and reconnect the area. The existing architectural language of the site and surrounding location is heritage and/or 20th century Australian architecture. The architectural aim is to respect and uphold the existing architectural values, while incorporating a juxtaposition of modernism and older styles within the design proposal.

The objective is to design a program that comprehensively reunites the suburban areas to the north and south of the site. It should accomplish this while acting sympathetically towards the existing heritage of the site, all the while encompassed in a modernised design aesthetic akin to that of the historical context of Newport.

The museum will be used by primarily southwestern Melbournians in addition to people travelling through or from the greater Melbourne area. Moreover, it would be aimed to be a community hub/ connecting point between north and south Newport. The museum itself must be both ramp and stair accessible for disability and wheelchair access.

This design will take the program of a museum, at least three stories tall. It will entail exhibition spaces designed for temporary and permanent collections alike, at least one lobby/foyer with adjoining administrative spaces, a café and museum store. Additionally, it must incorporate outdoor and indoor public/ community spaces.

To further the vision and narrative of Newport’s connection, the museum must have a bridge or pathway that connects the north residential area to the site or the museum itself. To abide by the site and contextual restraints well as meet the requirements of the project objective, the proposal must respond to the following: site context, accessibility, easements, social connection, and research exercise outcomes.

MUSEUM X AREAS OF INTEREST
TRAIN MUSEUM Open in 1962, the museum exhibits a number of steam locomotives as well as diesel and electronic trains. Many covering instillations have been made to preserve the remaining trains, although COVID has made these extensions difficult.
NORTH WILLIAMSTOWN RAILWAY STATION Opend in 1859, and once being next to historical commercial shops. The station has since been redesigned with a subterranian train track that completed in 2023. The line is among the Williamstown train line and connect to Newport.
