Mothers, thank you for your deep commitment to this organization and to the communities supported by Jack and Jill of America Foundation. This year the chapters raised in excess of $600,000 for grants and other initiatives such as Rebuild America, UNCF Scholarships, and Loose Change. The chapter contributions will support over 70 organizations who serve children throughout this country, some of which are here in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Guided by the leadership of the Members at Large, Rebuild America has had another successful year. A home for LaTonya Simpkins was built in Wilmington, North Carolina. LaTonya and her family are overjoyed to have a home to call their own.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the immediate past President Jacqueline Moore Bowles for her leadership and dedication to this board.

t is an honor and a privilege to come to Charlotte and be a part the 41st National Convention hosted by the Marvelous Mid-Atlantic Region. It has been a remarkable year for your Foundation.

Through the creative and innovative program committee, the grant process has entered the 21st Century.

This year, Foundation has moved the entire grant process online. This could not have been done without the Members at Large and the support of the entire Program Committee and the Board of Trustees.

Along with these investments and your continued support, our programs and the communities that we serve are strengthening to support the next generation of leaders.

Charlotte, Queen City, Wilmington, Greenville and Greensboro, North Carolina, just to name just a few. You are helping students with a broad range of opportunities to meet the challenges of today’s professional world. Careers today are defined not merely by textbooks but also by inventiveness, entrepreneurial spirit, and resilience. Thanks to you we can continue the legacy of Jack and Jill Foundation to provide youth a better future.

There are so many proud moments to talk about this year. One of the most remembered will be the $25,000 once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be on the ground floor of supporting the Smithsonian Museum of History and Culture. This is the only museum of its kind and will have an impact on Jack and Jill families and generations to come. The National Museum of African American History and Culture was established in 2003 by an Act of Congress, making it the 19th Smithsonian Institution museum. It is the only national museum devoted exclusively to documentation of African American life, art, history and culture. It is expected to open in 2016.

orn May 8, 1997 the Thompson quintuplets became the beneficiaries of a National Service Project of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., in 1998. As juniors in high school, this year the Thompson quintuplets focused on preparation for college. Additionally, as they prepare to make college decisions, Jack and Jill moms have worked with them to help identify career interests and passions. The quintuplets’ career interests range from law enforcement to medicine. Through the financial support of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Foundation they are receiving the academic support that will prepare them to receive the four-year scholarships awarded to them by Howard University.

Congratulations to Emily, Richard, Octavia, Stella, and Ann Marie, as they begin their senior year of high school.

2013 Loose Change Beneficiaries

Making a Positive Change with Loose Change

L

oose Changes is a campaign specifically designed for Jack and Jill children. We are teaching them to be ambassadors of philanthropy and instilling the idea that service to others is a lifetime commitment that begins as youth. Our children collect Loose Change throughout the year across the nation and in 2013 distributed over $30,000.00 to nonprofit organizations.

Teen Leadership Conference Participants Performed Community Service at The Greenwood Cultural Centers Summer Arts Program

eens of the Central Region performed community service at The Greenwood Cultural Center’s Summer Arts Program while attending the Region’s Teen Leadership Conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The award-winning sum-

mer arts program offers classes and educational hands-on activities that expose children to various forms of the arts.

Central Region teens provided service to approximately one hundred children ages seven to twelve in the Greenwood Cultural Center’s Summer Arts Program. The teens worked with the children in team-building exercises that concentrated on leadership, critical thinking, health, and community responsibility.

ver 300 MAR-velous Mid-Atlantic Teens gathered at the 61st Mid-Atlantic Regional Teen Conference hosted by the Raleigh-Wake and Fayetteville chapters. The Conference Tonya Green Theme, “Ignite the Member at Large Flame Within: Awake, Arise, and Shine Forth,” encouraged the teens to support our US troops serving stateside and abroad.

During the Foundation Luncheon, Master Sergeant Cedric King served as the keynote speaker. While serving our country in Afghanistan, he lost both of his legs when an Improvised Explosive Device (I.E.D.) exploded. During the luncheon he shared his story of perseverance and survival and his passion to encourage and motivate youth. The recognition of our Armed Servicemen continued during the Foundation Luncheon, as the teens were entertained by the 82nd Airborne Division Chorus from Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The 82nd Airborne Division is an active airborne infantry division of the United States Army, specializing in parachute landing operations, and it is the primary fighting arm of the XVIII Air-borne Corps.

2014 Teen Conference Super Community Service Projects

Southeastern Region

T

he 58th Southeastern Region Teen Conference Community Service project was held in Nashville, Tennessee on the historic campus of Fisk University.

Over six hundred teens gathered on the Fisk University campus and filled 1,894 backpacks for the children of Nashville. The backpacks were funded in part by a Lucille Hadley youth service grant from Jack and Jill of America Foundation. In addition to notebooks, markers, pencils, color pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, composition

books, and crayons, each backpack contained a note from a Southeastern teen wishing the recipient a successful school year. The backpacks will be distributed at the Nashville’s Love’s Healthy Start Fest, a back-to-school community event for underserved children. At this event Nashville children receive haircuts, immunizations, dental check-ups, along with other services to start the school year off right.

The event, which is free to Nashville children, is sponsored by Tennessee State Representative Harold Love, Jr., Tennessee State University, and the Urban League of Nashville. Representative Harold Love Jr. and Urban League Director Patricia Stokes were both on site to meet and thank Southeastern Region teens for their overwhelming support of the children of Nashville. Urban League Director Patricia Stokes thanked the teens on behalf of the Nashville communities that will benefit from their generosity. Representative Love stated, “This level of support is unprecedented,” and he encouraged the teens to remain “committed to their communities.”
