The Bubble Crown is a project dedicated to the Landmarks and Preservation Commission. This new space -part institution and part headquarters- will act as a bridge between the agency and civic life by opening up its archives, hearing rooms, laboratories and offices. The building is located in the historic district, Greenwich Village, NY. In designing this project, we re-imagined how architects relate with existing fabric, how we engage multiple histories, urban conditions, and materials with longer lives than the uses they envelope. With the resulted bubbled crown massing set on top of the original building, we preserved the existing building, amplified the public realm, and unearthed forgotten histories of the site.

SITE ANALY SIS The Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) is the largest municipal preservation agency in the nation. It is responsible for protecting New York City’s architecturally, historically, and culturally significant buildings and sites by granting them landmark or historic district status, and regulating them after designation. Through case studies, we learned that individual landmarks, for the most part, preserves the exteriors of buildings without the interiors because landmarking interiors across all buildings would be too much at the expense of the building owner and the building’s use. In the case of our design, we want to preserve and restore the interior for its historical-aesthetic value.

The new site for the LPC is located in the historic district of Greenwich Village. The site is the Northern Dispensary building, a freestanding triangular building located at the corner of Christopher street and Waverly Place. Built in 1831, the building housed a free medical clinic dedicated to serving the “worthy poor,” as stipulated by the city of New York in 1831.

The structure was built by Henry Bayard, a carpenter, and John Tucker, a mason, as a two story building.

A third (top) floor was added in 1855 to accommodate an ever-growing number of patients –many of whom shaped the history of the city (Edgar Allan Poe was said to be treated there many times). The building continued to function as a medical and dental clinic until 1989, when the Roman Catholic Diocese of New York bought it with the intention of turning it into a nursing home for AIDS patients.

One unique feature of the Greenwich village is its street grid. As the old Dutch grid intersects with the Commissioner’s Plan, triangular sites are formed.

On the NW side of the site feature a yet unpopulated park, opening up the oppertunity for the project to amplify the public real and revitalize the site.

The street-scape around the site contains diverse yet harmonious architectural styles. The sense of human scale around the site makes the spaces livable.

02 THE найз HOUSE Year 2022 Extreme Habitat Competition Tiny House Collaboration with Huilin Wu, Sansiri Saensopa Plan, Section and diagrams: Rhino + Illustrator + Photoshop Renderings: Rhino + VRay + Photoshop

The найз house is located in the Khuntan peak of Mongolia, next to the crossing point of three countries. It meant to provide a security and collaborative space for multicultural and diverse individuals that aim to challenge themselves. At 4000 meters height, the house is exposed to cold weather and extreme snow conditions. With traditional Mongolia Yurt central fire system combined with roman bath heating system, and additional solar panel and water collecting system, the house is self sufficient and capable of surviving the extreme environment.

Located on the second level of the house, above the bathroom, is the snow collecting tank, which allows snow to drip from the sloped roof into the tank throughout days and nights. The tank is adjoined to electrical heating system beneath it, where the converted solar energy may radiate to the snow, hence melting it into water.

The slope of the roofs mimic that of the Khuiten Peak itself.

Openings, oriented toward the south, are consisted of solid and translucent solar panels collaborate into a pattern of Ulzii, the endless knot, meaning luck and life-long happiness.

While the solar panels function as energy collectors, they also become part of the aesthetic and threshold for natural light to be embraced.

Inspired by Mongolian Yurt structure, central fire heating system functions as the primary heating system in the house. A sunken sofa area isolates an gathering space for residents to communicate and interact. As the center of the house, the fire place summarize most of the living activities, including cooking, recreation, studio. When the furnace is not in use, the smoking air ventilation would cover the fire and helps direct the heating energy transfer through hollow bricks within the walls in order to heat up the entire building.

Walkie Talkie is a project located in Marsala, Sicily, Italy. The building itself was a cinema built in the fascism period; and it sits at the city gate of Marsala, looking at the ocean and a roman archeology site.

Acknowledging the geographical and cultural importance of the site, the project intends to stretch itself to the roman ruins and re-purpose the fascism building into a culture exchange studio complex, preserving and celebrating the gradually lost Sicilian oral culture and history.

During the site analysis, there are a few problems found on site. First, the fascism building itself is isolated from the ground with no consideration of the surrounding architecture and site condition. Both entrances to the archeology site are blocked by metal gates, and the height difference of the landscape made it impossible to enter the building all around.

The cinema itself was built during the fascism period as a brainwashing machine to the local Sicilians. As shown in the original plan, the spatial arrangement suggests an one way communication. The project aims to unmute Sicilian people, minimize the fascism emphasis of the cinema impro, but without demolishing the building or removing the history.

The strategy is to use landscape articulation and a series of screen designs on site to mute the appearance and aftereffect of fascism ruling, yet relink the isolated building back to the landscape and surrounding environment. The zigzag circulation intends to create an engaging walking experience with the oral performances happening on site and the picturesque scene of roman ruins at the backdrop.

The project divides itself into two complex, one resides at the original cinema site where function as a major public plaza in front of the city gate and one resides at the seaside where is relatively more private and quiet.

On the public side, the project programs a series of performance areas, studio spaces, exhibition and library, which intends to preserve and regenerate Sicilian culture. The other side is mainly designed as an artist residency that invites worldwide artists to Sicily, exchanging ideas and popularity the Sicilian culture. For the original building, the fascism characteristic is most projecting on the front facade.

The project did not demolish the original facade and redesign a new one, rather, it used a screen which muted the fascism “voice.”

The screen itself is a molded negative version of the fascism facade, but with a flat and relative rough material. The narrow, in and between space created by the facade and screen is utilized as a place of memorial and rethinking about the fascism history.

The Canopy is a wooden frame, canopy-like structure in which all areas are connected. It is not a copy of history, but an non-static, multiple structure ready to accommodate the unpredictable future. As its program shift and change over years, the structure never stops growing. In turn, it brings life back to site, surrounding buildings, and communities.

THESIS Historically, the site was a highly populated public plaza. But now, with the gradual growth of industrialization and vertically grown building, the old city center became vacant.

In the future, the project aims to repopulate and restore the areas as a public space through a partially-constructed, free-form structure, which only allows itself to be complete at times when it is filled with lives and activities of occupants from down Syracuse.

The structure system has the hierarchy from “the core” to primary, secondary and peripheral frames. The core has the largest thickness, whereas the peripherals has the smallest thickness. The larger the column is the larger the space it will frame. The structure system helps create large and small spaces that can be distributed into different purpose like community hall and shelves. The incompleteness and partially- constructed condition of the structure allows itself to be grown by time and to be filled by people.

The project aims to restore the public in downtown Syracuse in cooperation with Syracuse Grows, which is a company who provides advice on urban agriculture in a city setting. The project programs a community garden, producing and selling while offering the spaces to be occupied to Syracuse population. The complex contains multiple programs including garden, market, cafe, meeting room and amphitheater, all wrapped around by an accessible ramp circulation.

The climate conditions of Syracuse includes an intense precipitation. The roofs are designed with a slope to lead water down into the collecting tank (which is framed by the core structure) as much as possible, while also protecting the pedestrians on the side walk.

The market is activated by the ramp system, open partitions frames the individual booth on the free ground level. The market is built by removable columns that can further be constructed and removed as needed by occupants themselves.

All gardens are located on the ground floor next to at least one of the water collecting pool; therefore, rainwater can be directly reused in garden. The garden and the pool is partitioned by a glass, allows sunlight to enter the space.

There are 2 main water systems. Small pools are used in geothermal system, water collected from precipitation is pumped up to the top of the ramps where they trickle down to heat up the building. The largest pool is a one way system, it’s actively heated up to be used.

The project is located along the Mohawk River, next to the Vischers Ferry Dam, NY. The special location provides the project a special oppertunity as a pivot of the main circulation of vehicle, boat, human and animal. The project is inspired and generated by the local food production chain and recent food movement. The project focuses on creating a gathering space for nearby neighborhoods, connecting local farmers with costumers, balancing resources across the river and advocating for a closer relationship between people and nature.

The project contains multiple food markets for local farmers to sell their goods, restaurants which support farm to table and foraging movements, and a research lab and seed bank to preserve local ecology.

Perspectives

Two main circulation logic - the cross and the curve made the project accessible to human, cars and animals.

With a series of food experiment, an abstract spacial relationship had been developed. And with the food physical model making process, a cabbage derived form is developed, the cabbage like pattern on the ground leads rainwater to the central collecting pool for further reuse.
