01 Qiddiya Performing Arts Centre

Tom Wiscombe Architecture

Qiddiya, Saudi 2023 - 2025

The Qiddiya Performing Arts Centre is the first flagship cultural asset of Qiddiya City in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, a city wholly dedicated to play and an epicenter of entertainment, sports, and culture. The core of the project is its two main theatre venues - the Premium Theatre and Adaptable Theatre.

The Premium Theatre is located within the glazed Lobby underneath the loft structure, provides 1,800 seats on its stalls levels and two balconies. The Adaptable Theatre , which hangs from the Loft, has seating for 414 on its stalls and gallery level. The floor is adaptable to support a wide range of seating configurations and types of performance.

Earth Protector is by nature a table with five legs. The five Blades support the perimeter of the Loft, while the Premium Theatre sits at the center as the primary support. The Premium Theatre is built of reinforced concrete as a stiff box to reduce torsion in the Loft. This box stands on the Basement which stands firmly on rock at the B2 level.

GEA: 89,301SM

Location: Qiddiya, Saudi

Project Type: Performing Arts Center Building Code: Saudi Building Code (2018)

Roles:

Designed and generated drawing sets for the Site, Basement, Parking, and all the circulations to achieve LEED Gold

Led Revit modeling of the blade envelope

Managed weekly Revit model publishing on ACC

Developed digital workflows between Rhino, Revit, AutoCAD, and Navisworks to streamline the coordination

The Qiddiya Performing Arts Centre has been located at the cliff edge of its plot, over 100M away from the corniche road. The space between will be traversed with the Shadow, which is a theoretical shadow projected from Earth Protector when it "lands" on earth.

Site Plan

The Shadow will be delineated by xeriscaping and low-water-use desert plants which will be selected to create a superbloom during certain seasons.

Traffic, Royal Overlay, Security, and District Firefighting infrastructure integration are all in progress at this time. These are crucial elements for the functioning of this asset. Our traffic plan considers separate parking and delivery ingress and egress for vehicular traffic, trucks and fire trucks/ EVAs, and Royal motorcades. It also includes a Valet pickup and return system on-plot along with 260 parking stalls on Level B1.

Sunken Plaza

02 QPAC Interior Design

Roles: Coordinated MEP per TWA design intent; produced SD set for restrooms; redesigned circulation and lighting based on structural/MEP constraints; developed concession millwork; Produced physical mock-ups and designed interior FF&E for key FOH spaces, ensuring the feasibility of the design for clients.

Concept

Media systems include linear LED lighting embedded into facade Chevron patterns and mass edges, video projections at Lobby, Amphitheatre, and Skygarden levels, in-grade color-changing Y-lighting in the public realm, lanterns emphasizing the uneven ground of the site, and environmental sound effects throughout. The project will "wake up", "go to sleep", switch to wireframe mode, and sometimes interact with the content inside the Theatres.

The building is ultimately conceived of as an immersive indoor/outdoor stage. Earth Protector is an open structure, filled with color and life- it is not a rarified, exclusive architectural entity. Everything happens within Earth Protector. Earth Protector is a space of freedom and play.

05 Invisible Chinatown

Partner: Wei Zhu

Instructor: Eric Owen Moss

Los Angeles, CA 2023

Food is a central element in shaping immigrant cultures, presenting both opportunities and challenges. Chinese food culture adapts as immigrants move, embodying the dynamic nature of contemporary culture. This thesis explores mobility as a design concept, uncovering the interplay between architectural space and cultural identity. Focusing on Chinatown, where traditional culture faces demolition, it questions whether new orders can replace old ones and explores vertical development within urban landscapes.

The project envisions a food culture complex, delving into the sensory aspects of taste, smell, appearance, and touch, reinterpreting Chinese culinary traditions within their original cultural context. It seeks to build new structures atop existing properties, investigating the untapped potential between old buildings and the open sky. This confrontation with dominant culture on the urban fringe fosters new ideas crucial for emerging cultural growth.

06 Diamond Ranch Elementary School

Concept

Our project for the new Diamond Ranch Elementary School responds to the effects of increasing aridification in California, scarcity of water, overuse of natural resources and the isolation of plants from buildings. The school is designed to promote a reflection on the relationship between people and nature. Do we need an air conditioning system? Do we need artificial light sources during the day? What role does the water cycle play in the natural environment? What is the relationship between plants and architecture? We think that architecture should create a connection rather than a separation between people and nature.

Our site and building are quietly located between the land and the mountains, and it the campus has a strong sense of sculptural qualitye. The free and organic form also shapes the changeable adaptable indoor space comprised of: walls, floors, ceilings, and flexible indoorinteriors. They These forms allow teachers and students to look at the sky and mountains at any time and they blur the boundary between architecture and nature. From a functional point of view, holes of different sizes and walls of varying shape also introduce natural light into the rooms and realize natural ventilation, which "cools down" the perennially hot building.
