I’m a second-year architecture student at Syracuse University. To me, architecture is designed not only for humans but also for nature. Architecture creates a balance between nature and humans and connects them together. Inspiring from the biological world, I aspire to design architectures that are both functionally efficient and environmentally sustainable.

I. The Public Bathhouse, Jamesville, NY Located in Jamesville, NY, the project aims to redefine the conventional use of a public bathhouse. By incorporating the iterated grid system of the Tatiana Bilbao into the bathhouse design, the site develops welcoming circulation systems, guiding the visitors through the site. Also, learning from Tatiana Bilbao’s spatial logic, the Bathhouse splits into multiple units and arranges in relation to the developed grid system. Each of the indoor baths is paired with an outdoor natural bath. This creates an intertwining interior and exterior experience and fosters a deeper exploration of landscapes.

The shape of the architecture, outdoor baths, and rain gardens are all inspired by the natural landscape’s accumulation and erosion. Both the gardens and the baths simulate landscape erosion, while the lofted architectures simulate landscape accumulation. The sloped roofs of architecture also maximize the natural light in the interior.

Massing Model (Zoom in detail)

This model explores how a system of grid-like architecture may fit into dynamic landscapes.

The grid system part is inspired by the precedent architecture “Tatiana Bilbao” and the dynamic landscape is inspired by the accumulation and erosion of the land around the geysers. This model helps me in developing the optimal iterated grid systems responding to the actual landscape for my bathhouse design.

This model takes time as an important factor in its design.

The model investigates how a combined system of architecture and natural landscape may evolve as time goes on.

By making this model, I’m motivated to consider time as a factor in my bathhouse design.

The use of concrete as the main construction material enhances the longevity and durability of the building structure.

II. Youth Hostel - Thickened Walls This is a youth hostel design located in Syracuse, New York. I mainly investigated in use of thickened walls and the optimal transition from public and private space. To create a more subtle transition from public to private areas and give more privacy to the apartments, I adopt thickened walls to act as a gap between the public and private. The spaces for apartments and lobbies were created by carving out pieces from the thickened walls in various forms. Each room acted like a cell of the entire thickened wall structure, which provided more privacy and sound and heat insulation for the apartment area.

The second floor included eight single rooms and two group rooms for clients, and a staff apartment. The black hatches and white lines illustrate the private space, and the normal white fills and black lines stand for public space.

The third floor included mixed-use of spaces for restaurants, a library, and a viewing platform.

Tourists can enjoy one-toone soccer matches on the viewing platform.

The dynamic windows for each apartment respond to unconventional carving methods. By fitting each room in slightly different levels, the placement of windows creates more sense of flow to the front and east facades of the hostel. Each window indicates where each room is located inside the thickened walls structure.

Site Section

The unconventional carvings changed the conventional way how people inhabited living spaces. Most of the furniture in the apartment was a part of the thickened wall structure, such as the closets, desks, and beds. The three types of carving out spaces for single rooms fulfill different preferences or requirements. Some are more suitable for playful kids, others are suitable for mediation activities, for normal clients, etc.

III. Mycelium Pavilion This is a pavilion that displays different types of mycelium. I made a display model first to analyze the optimal way to display the mycelium and research the best living conditions of the living mycelium.

For my final pavilion, I designed the display area underground to avoid direct sunlight and preserve moisture for the living mycelium. People can see the living mycelium in the underground part of the pavilion, or touch and smell the mycelium blocks that were used to construct the staircase fences and the dehydrated Armillaria Myceliums that grew on the central sculpture.

Collages

The off-centered underground circle allows people to feel more surprised as they enter the underground display area. At first, they may feel that the display corridor is quite congested, but as they get in further, the display area will suddenly get much wider. People could have a shift of mood during the tour. I also displayed the mycelium both on the walls and on the ground which is all covered by glasses, to give a more immersive touring experience for people.

III. Body Movements and Space 139 H4

This project investigates the relationship between body movement and space. I first chose to analyze the movement of laying down on the bed. By doing the continuous shooting myself, I chose twelve key images and combined them all as a single image.

Then I analyzed the movement by depicting the contour, joints, and bones for every key image I chose, and connected the joints with a dashed line in sequence. Following the same process, I also analyzed another unconventional movement that may happen on the bed, which is crawling.

Based on the movements I analyzed in the first step, I designed the envelope space as a single tunnel for people to make specific movements. I chose some other movements such as climbing up, going down, and goalkeeper saving from my group students' analysis as my design basis.

V. Otherworks

I’ve done many other minor works and practices including sketches, landform analysis, and models. These practices enhance my skill in architecture design and make me well-prepared for major studio projects.
