01. A New Urban Road Created

Site Location: Hiroshima, Japan

Programe: Cultural Market

Hiroshima was rebuilt rapidly after the atomic bombing, fueled by the determination of its residents. However, contemporary Japanese society can often feel oppressive, especially for young people.

A cultural market is proposed to revive the local society through a series of traditional crafts selling and workshops. It encourages people to know and participates in the production.

A landmark alongside the market is Arcade in the north. Thus, a new perpendicular urban route was created from the peace memorial park passing by the Arcade until to the market.

Threshold : A Welcoming Gesture

There are many school buildings around the site which showed an extremely closed gesture by these spatial languages and gave a depressed sense for people who used the spaces.

The threshold of the market is compeletly open for public. People from Arcade are attracted by the canopy and the cafe aside from the canopy that both showed welcoming and celebrating gestures to creat lively atmosphere. At the same time, windows under the eave provide light to the interior spaces and ventilation. It potentially reaveal and symbol of the theme for the market and attract people further explore the market due to the inspiring timber mortise and tenon truss structure.

The Craftmen's Drama

Hiroshima is known for its traditional artistry and craftsmanship, to be found in items like washi paper, sake, ceramics, and art brushes. Unfortunately, these traditions are disappearing following social iterations. The production of making crafts are seem like a performance. Letting craftsmen go back to the 'stage' is important. At the same time, it is a useful way to create a lively public atmosphere in the market and attract people to know and participate in the series of activities. In the central, a shooting lightfrom the sky going through the traditional timber mortise and tenon truss to the workshops further celebrates these crafts productions.

the Structure

The lightweight timber frame structure are designed into the market which is environmental-friendly and adapt to the traditional culture market in Japanese context. The timber truss formed by traditonal Japanese tennon structure which give the support for the roof structure and give the unique interior expericence for people who have been to the culture market. At the same time, the earthquake proofing foundation is constructed on the top of flexible pads that isolate the foundation from the gound.

A Journey through the time: Preserving & Decaying

Liverpool has a rich history of docks and played a significant role in the global slave trade in the 19th century. However, in the late 20th century, the city’s docks and manufacturing industries declined sharply, leading to high unemployment and a shift in its identity.

The proposed museum aims to preserve Liverpool's memory by encouraging engagement with its history through contemporary artworks by Martin Parr and Lubaina Himid. Additionally, public spaces like the library and art studio will inspire future artists and expand the local art scene.

A storytelling from the city: Past

The decaying brick wall of the existing pub building are preserved which symbolize the history of the decline industrial city. Going further, people start to know the history of Liverpool as the key dock city dominated slave trade around the world. The deep shadow courtyard would have a strong contrast with the bright garden at right which encouraged people have relfection about the history of the city.It inspired by aesthetics of decay by Dylan Trigg.

Encounter the Brightness

The futurists cinema facade is preserved well to clad on the wall of the deep shadow courtyard. The bright interiors and dark deep shadow courtyard make people recall the glory period but it still exists in different way. Then people go up to the library and a roof top to stay people enjoy and admire the surrounding heritages. The garden symbolizes brightness and light. There is a spill out space at the back of the the site to connect the community. A sidewalk activated to weave the museum and the Western Approaches museum where ignored by most of people.

Futurists Cinema

A Destination for citizens

Theater to be as a beacon standing quietely at the corner. The type of the public space show a civic character but interiors built in domestic astmospehere. Moment like this invite the public to engage in an act of theater knowingly. The foyer forms in collonade with a dome ceiling at the central to signify the arrival and gathering qualities. Auditorium is highly flexible creating indeterminacy where both structured and finished by timber to give a warm and intimate characters to the space.
