Our Story
The revival of the Thai silk industry by a legendary American.
Born in 1906 in Delaware and educated at Princeton University, James H.W. Thompson was an architect by trade, and after serving as a military officer in World War II, he settled in Bangkok.
He was captivated by South East Asia, especially for its culture and local crafts. He particularly fell in love with the art of hand-woven Thai silk, with its unique lustre and texture. His entrepreneurial skills and design background led to him building a network of artisans, re-engineered looms, introducing new designs and techniques, and most importantly new colors to showcase to the world. Hence, in 1951 he founded the Thai Silk Company and commenced the brand’s international expansion and recognition.
On Easter Sunday afternoon in 1967, only 9 days after opening his new Surawong Road showroom, Jim Thompson disappeared mysteriously while on holiday in the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia.
His disappearance remains the largest mystery in South East Asia to this day.

Our Factory
Three hours North East of Bangkok, in the Isan conservation area of Korat lies our Jim Thompson factory & farm. Originally a mulberry plantation, the farm covers an area of 119 hectares, with its own reservoir to allow for totally organic farming and an abundance of wildlife. An area known for traditional silk making, this farm champions Jim Thompson’s values of nurturing a craft industry while benefiting thousands of families in the process.
Opened in 1989 to supply the growing demand for Jim Thompson products, our fully integrated mill prepares our yarns, dyes them ready for hand or machine weaving, as well as printing and finishing.
The factory not only produces textiles for residential and commercial projects, but also produces fabrics for our fashion and home ranges, with unwavering commitment to excellence and exceptional design.
