A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN Dear Students, Alumni, and Friends, Happy New Year! The sun is shining, and everyone is hopeful that 2022 will be closer to the normal we experienced in fall 2019. Of course, things have changed because of the pandemic. Some changes were for the good, like now having more flexible classes and learning new methodologies in teaching our course content. We also seem to be more appreciative of seeing each other in person, with masks to show respect for everyone’s health.

I was recently sent the following story that I wanted to share with you since it reminds me of how our students, faculty, and staff are the “light” for others. We teach and practice the entrepreneurial mindset, caring for others, solving problems, and not letting failure get in our way of success. I hope that it will be a reminder of who we are. Here is the story.

Some years ago, I was stuck on a crosstown bus in New York City during rush hour. Traffic was barely moving. The bus was filled with cold, tired people who were deeply irritated with one another, and with the world itself. Two men barked at each other about a shove that might or might not have been intentional. A pregnant woman got on, and nobody offered her a seat. Rage was in the air; no mercy would be found here.

But as the bus approached Seventh Avenue, the driver got on the intercom. "Folks," he said, "I know you have had a rough day and you are frustrated. I can’t do anything about the weather or traffic, but here is what I can do. As each one of you gets off this bus, I will reach out my hand to you. As you walk by, drop your troubles into the palm of my hand. Don’t take your problems home to your families tonight, just leave them with me. My route goes right by the Hudson River, and when I drive by there later, I will open the window and throw your troubles in the water."

It was as if a spell had lifted. Everyone burst out laughing. Faces gleamed with surprised delight. People who had been pretending for the past hour not to notice each other’s existence was suddenly grinning at each other like, is this guy serious? Oh, he was serious. At the next stop, just as promised, the driver reached out his hand, palm up, and waited. One by one, all the exiting commuters placed their hand just above his and mimed the gesture of dropping something into his palm. Some people laughed as they did this, some teared up, but everyone did it. The driver repeated the same lovely ritual at the next stop, too. And the next. All the way to the river.

We live in a hard world, my friends. Sometimes it is extra difficult to be a human being. Sometimes you have a bad day. Sometimes you have a bad day that lasts for several years. You struggle and fail. You lose jobs, money, friends, faith, and love. You witness horrible events unfolding in the news, and you become fearful and withdrawn. There are times when everything seems cloaked in darkness. You long for the light but don’t know where to find it.

But what if you are the light? What if you are the very agent of illumination that a dark situation begs for? That’s what this bus driver taught me, that anyone can be the light, at any moment. This guy wasn’t some big power player. He wasn’t a spiritual leader. He wasn’t some media-savvy influencer. He was a bus driver, one of society’s most invisible workers. But he possessed real power, and he used it beautifully for our benefit.

When life feels especially grim, or when I feel particularly powerless in the face of the world’s troubles, I think of this man and ask myself, "what can I do, right now, to be the light?" Of course, I can’t personally end all wars, or solve global warming, or transform vexing people into entirely different creatures. I definitely can’t control traffic. But, I do have some influence on everyone I brush up against, even if we never speak or learn each other’s name.

Thank you for letting me share this with you. Inside this newsletter, you will read about all the wonderful things our faculty, staff, and students have accomplished. I am so proud to be part of this college and am humbled every day by the “light” that so many have brought to our lives.

JIM MORAN COLLEGE STUDENT SPOTLIGHTS The College features some amazing undergraduate and graduate students to see what they are up to both inside and outside the classroom and why they choose entrepreneurship as their field of study.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHTS JACOB VAN DOREN | COMMERCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP What is your favorite thing about the JMC program so far?

My favorite thing about the JMC program is the flexibility that the classes provide. On top of learning a diverse set of skills from the classes in the program, we are also given many opportunities to work on our business and learn skills that we find valuable outside of the classroom. In addition to the flexibility aspect of the program, all of the JMC professors are willing to go above and beyond to ensure we succeed as students as well as in our own personal ventures.

What are your career goals?

I plan to apply the wide skill set I acquire from this program to benefit a startup business after college. I want to combine my entrepreneurial experience with my siblings' diverse skill sets to create a business that will provide meaningful value to our customers. My long-term goal is to own and operate multiple franchises.

What have you enjoyed most this fall?

This fall I have greatly enjoyed the vast opportunities the JMC program provides outside of the classroom. There are a multitude of workshops, career events, and social events that provide tons of value and opportunity to network and create lasting relationships with other entrepreneurship students and professors. I have enjoyed taking advantage of these opportunities to expand my connections and learn more outside of the classroom.

True entrepreneurs fail a lot before they become successful.

This program has taught me to not be afraid of failure but to embrace it, adjust, and apply the lessons learned in the future.

What was the most valuable piece of knowledge you’ve learned from your experience in the Entrepreneurial program?

The most valuable piece of knowledge I’ve received so far is to take risks while you are young. A lot of young people feel as though they don’t know enough to create a business, but this program has taught me and many others that you just have to go after it and get started.

True entrepreneurs fail a lot before they become successful. This program has taught me to not be afraid of failure but to embrace it, adjust, and apply the lessons learned in the future.

Who or what has influenced you to pursue entrepreneurship in your specific industry?

My father has been a great influence on me to pursue entrepreneurship. His story always motivates me to strive to be better every day and live life to the fullest while helping others along the way. Entrepreneurship provides a way to create the life you want to live and if done correctly can allow you to have a positive impact on those around you as well as your customers.

What advice would you give to a student that is thinking about pursuing a degree in entrepreneurship?

Get involved in organizations and events outside of the classroom involving entrepreneurship. There are many amazing opportunities that the JMC program provides to the students to succeed, learn, and connect with other students, professors, and alumni. Take advantage of these opportunities and use the facilities to your advantage while you are here. Also, keep an open mind and take risks, don’t be afraid to fail.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHTS AMANI COMMODORE | RETAIL ENTREPRENEURSHIP What is your favorite thing about the JMC program so far?

My favorite thing about the major has to be the faculty/staff. My professors and advisors are very supportive of my future plans and are the reason I believe I will be successful after college. They always believed in me when I found it difficult to believe in myself. I’m also comfortable enough with the faculty/staff to contact someone when I have a question or just need advice.

What are your career goals?

My long-term career goals are to start a dance/athletic apparel brand or a natural hair care line.

What have you enjoyed most this past fall?

This fall, I’ve enjoyed the projects I’ve been able to work on in my courses. As a senior, I felt like I’ve been pushed, creatively, to develop my brand's image and potential garments in class. My favorite project, so far, has been a croquis project I did for my retail technologies class. I created 3 croquis and clothes with full detail and shading using Adobe Illustrator. This project was a lot of fun for me due to the amount of creative freedom I was given.

What was the most valuable piece of knowledge you’ve learned from your experience in the Entrepreneurial program?

The most valuable piece of knowledge I’ve learned from my experience in the entrepreneurial program is that your product always has to satisfy a need. You may have a great idea for a retail brand, but if it’s not solving a problem for a consumer it won’t do as well in the market.

You’ll be surprised by the things you accomplish when you just go for it!

Who or what has influenced you to pursue entrepreneurship in your specific industry?

My godmother influenced me to pursue entrepreneurship in my specific industry. She is the founder of P. Sherrod & Co., a leather handbag business, based in Atlanta, GA. I had the idea to have my own brand since high school, but she’s the main reason I was encouraged to study retail entrepreneurship.

What advice would you give to a student that is thinking about pursuing a degree in entrepreneurship?

The advice I would give a student interested in the major is to remember your "why" and be confident in your ability. It’s important to remember your “why” so you don’t steer away from your original goal or get discouraged. As you learn more about the industry, you may question your direction or even want to alter your brand position, but it’s important to reference your original “why” if you steer too far away. Also, remember that you’re able to do the things you put your mind to. You’ll be surprised by the things you accomplish when you just go for it!

STUDENT SPOTLIGHTS LIZ CASEY | GRADUATE STUDENT | TEXTILES & APPAREL ENTREPRENEURSHIP What is your favorite thing about the JMC program so far?

My favorite thing about this program, at both the undergraduate and the graduate levels, is how broad and diverse the teaching faculty is. It has truly been an honor to be taught by educators with such a variety of interests and specialties. With that, there have been so many incredible hands-on opportunities with these professors. From 3D printing accessories, to digitally printing our own designs, and testing textiles in a lab are all experiences that I have valued greatly.

What are your career goals?

One of my career goals has come to fruition this semester. I interned with Disney Theme Park Merchandise in 2019 and ended in March of 2020. While I was with the company, I was planting networking seeds that began to flower just a few weeks ago.

At the end of October, my former leader from Disney reached out about a remote position on her team. At the beginning of November, I began working remotely as a merchandise coordinator for the women’s apparel and accessories department. It is right where I want to be and I am elated!

What have you enjoyed most this past fall?

This fall has been my first semester in the master’s program with the JMC. I have enjoyed the small class size immensely. I love having a small class where I can get to know the people in my cohort, as well as the instructing professor. Discussions, presentations, and lectures are so engaging and the participation is wonderful and aligns well with my learning style.

What was the most valuable piece of knowledge you’ve learned from your experience in the Entrepreneurial program?

One of the most valuable things I have learned in my time in the college of entrepreneurship is that being an entrepreneur does not always mean starting your own business. I was once speaking with a professor and I mentioned that I felt like the title of ‘entrepreneur’ on my resume might misrepresent my career and professional goals. She told me that the creativity, actions, and innovation of someone with an entrepreneurial background can be applied in a myriad of ways like in a small, family-owned business or a massive corporation. This has stuck with me, and I fully intend to apply that advice wherever I go.

Who or what has influenced you to pursue entrepreneurship in your specific industry?

I don’t know what led me to the school of entrepreneurship, but I do know that I spent my whole life growing up in and around small retail businesses. Growing up and working in small, local businesses has given me an inside look into entrepreneurship and how it can bolster the community. I also recall being very young and being enthralled with fabrics and clothing. Once I found out that I could get a degree in textiles and apparel, I was hooked. I chose to further my education with the JMC because I wanted to know more about textiles and apparel entrepreneurship and I know that this will help point me in the right direction for my future, whatever that may be.

What advice would you give to a student that is thinking about pursuing a degree in entrepreneurship?

At first, I didn’t think that the College of Entrepreneurship was for me, but once I got the opportunity to think about what entrepreneurship means to me, everything fell into place. My advice would be to keep an open mind. Entrepreneurship means something different to every single person, and once you find out what it means to you, the possibilities are vast and unique.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHTS SIXTUS KUUDAAR | GRADUATE STUDENT | SOCIAL & SUSTAINABLE ENTERPRISES What is your favorite thing about the JMC program so far?

Being at JMC has been an eye-opening experience for me, where I have been able to learn and understand much more about the entrepreneurship world. As a master's student in the Social Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Enterprises program, I have had the exposure to know about the current revolution of the world of business, which is the triad factors to a sustainable world that is the Environment, Social life, and Governance (ESG).

What are your career goals?

My career goals are fostering an innovative green-tech ecosystem and I am championing this effort through my start-up called VisionX. What have you enjoyed most this past fall?

What I enjoyed the most this fall was the field trip my class tookto Babcock Ranch and Legacy Resort Homes where we learned a lot from the experts on site.

What was the most valuable piece of knowledge you’ve learned from your experience in the Entrepreneurial program?

Learning about ESG's goals has been phenomenal for me, I have gotten to factor in these goals in my startup.

Who or what has influenced you to pursue entrepreneurship in your specific industry?

My mentor Bill Krizner has been a great influence to me, he suggested this program to me and I haven’t regretted it.

What advice would you give to a student that is thinking about pursuing a degree in entrepreneurship?

Take a step of becoming an impact maker, and do it through a degree in entrepreneurship.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHTS CAMILLE LASTRAPES | GRADUATE STUDENT | PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT What has been your favorite thing about the Product Development master's program?

My favorite thing about the master's program is being able to build close relationships with individuals in my cohort. During my time in undergrad, I knew a few of them from our commercial entrepreneurship major, however, it has been amazing to grow closer with everyone knowing that I have such a strong support system with my endeavors. Everyone is so friendly, and we all truly want to see each other succeed.

What makes you passionate about entrepreneurship?

From a very young age, I was always intrigued with running a business. During middle and high school, I created a few small businesses here and there, selling my products through Etsy and to family members. It wasn’t until I entered the Jim Moran program that it became clear that entrepreneurship was a passion of mine and something I knew I needed to for a career. I love the opportunities that entrepreneurship gives, such as networking and doing what I love while also making a living.

What are some lessons you have learned with your experience starting Cala Designs?

When I started Cala Designs a little over two years ago, I would have never thought that I could grow this business to where it is today. With a few mistakes and small failures, I have learned so much from running Cala Designs. In the beginning stages, I was so eager to get my products out into the market, that I ignored how much research mattered, along with making sure my products were up to quality standards. Rushing the early process caused me to have to completely stop my business for a bit, understand what went wrong, then fix those issues. Ever since then, my products exceed my expectations of quality, I learned who my target market exactly is, and those customers are satisfied.

If you could give your younger self some advice, what would you tell her?

There are so many things I would tell my younger self. Do not rush! The right idea and time will come. There were many instances where I got very frustrated trying to sell things in saturated markets, losing money, and wasting time. I would also say to research as much as you can. Trust your gut and expect to fail. Do not let yourself get down when you do though, because failure is such a great learning experience. Make as many connections as you can because everyone can bring value to you, and vice versa. Most importantly, do something you love, because it will never feel like a job if so.

What are your career goals?

My career goals in the future are to successfully own and operate my own business. I love the idea of working without feeling like it’s a job – that’s how I envision myself feeling about owning a business. Before I get to that point, I would like to join a marketing or product development company to gain experience and knowledge before creating my own entrepreneurial venture.

What advice would you give to a student that is thinking about pursuing a degree in entrepreneurship?

If you are debating going into the entrepreneurship program, do it!! This program offers so much more than just how to run your own business. I have made lifelong connections with those in my cohort, learned new communication skills, and got over my fear of public speaking. The professors in this program really care about you and want you to succeed, which truly shows in your classes. The creative nature of this program is what grew my love for entrepreneurship even more, and I couldn’t see myself going into any other major.

JIM MORAN COLLEGE ALUMNI SPOTLIGHTS The College features undergraduate and graduate alumni to see what they have been up to since they graduated from the university and any advice they would like to give future or current student entrepreneurs.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT THOMAS BROOKS | SALES ASSOCIATE DESIGNATE AT PEPSICO CLASS OF 2020, COMMERCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP What have you been up to since graduation?

Since graduation, I have been working for Pepsi full time. I started on June 15 of 2020 and I went through a whole training program my first year and learned every aspect of the business. I spent a couple of months in sales, a couple of months in delivery, about a month in the warehouse, and then I eventually ended up being in the contract team for October, November, December, and January. So, with Pepsi, every year all our contracts are yearly, so I lead the southside of Atlanta in contracts and then our location in contracts as well. Historically, we have always been the last ones to finish, but last year we were the first location in the Georgia market to finish, so it was the first time for Atlanta to finish first. After that, I went and finished up a little bit more of my training program. Then I got put into a training role for management for a month and a half and then got this Territory that I currently run and have been running since July 2021 with nine salesmen under me.

What do you miss most about FSU, the Entrepreneurship Program, and Tallahassee?

From the Jim Moran College, what I miss the most is being around like-minded individuals. We would be walking to class and people would bounce ideas with each other like “Hey, what do you think about this or that?” and just everybody having wide eyes and really not knowing what the future would hold for us but being able to spit out ideas and just see problems. I have restructured how I think about entrepreneurship being in my current role but being around people that all thought the same is something that I miss just because I think that being in that environment helps facilitate a lot of ideas for everybody. The constant feedback and coaching of each other is something that I miss. From FSU, I miss college life and the fact that I could get involved in anything. I was an entrepreneurship major, but I was very into SGA, into the Circus, and I was very involved with the student foundation. The college availability of so much involvement is what I miss the most.

Please describe your current role and how your time at the Jim Moran College prepared you for that role.

I currently work as a District Manager or a Sales District Leader for a territory here in Atlanta. As I said, I run a team of nine salesmen, and the simple, kind of funny answer I give to most people is that I am the Michael Scott of Pepsi. I manage a team of salesmen, so whatever they need, whether that is facing difficult customers, having those hard conversations, passing information about sale incentives along to the team, as well as keeping them motivated and keeping them coming back to sell. Really, whatever it is I can do. When they run their routes, I can go out there and help them sell coolers and extra things, and then I also manage them and make sure they are doing their job correctly, so going out there, coach them up, physically helping them get numbers better, so whether that is doing coaching or just doing store audits in general. My goal is to make their job easier, so I try to take on as much of the hard stuff so they can run their routes smoothly and have little to no issues. What the Jim Moran College taught me was that you can´t be focused just on one side of the business or one aspect of it; you have to see it all. It is not just the sales force that does everything, it is not just the management team, it is not just the HR team or the finance team. Everybody is connected and everybody helps everybody’s job. I think that was the biggest thing the JMC showed me. I still consider myself an entrepreneur even though I am working for Pepsi because my business is my territory, and my job is to continue to use all of my resources to help make us the most successful territory in the Atlanta market.

Lauren Dalton is a two-time graduate of Florida State University, earning her B.S. in 2007, M.S. in 2008. Since graduation, Lauren has worked for a variety of corporate retailers including Kate Spade, Bureau Veritas, Eddie Bauer, JCPenney, Eurofins, QVC, and her current company Zulily. Her career portfolio includes roles in quality, product safety, pricing, international operations, supply chain, product management and technology solutions.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Lauren Dalton, Class of 2008 Technology Product Manager: Marketing, Data, & Machine Learning

I began my career journey in New York City interning at Kate Spade, thanks to the support from Ann Langston and the Retail Center. Since graduating from the FSU in 2008, I have moved 14 times, living in five different states. I have learned that I thrive on change. My moves and job changes define who I am and how I remember the many facets of my life. These moves were very unexpected but have led to new career challenges and growth opportunities, each time adding a new set of skills to my portfolio. I have spent my entire post-graduate career in corporate retail, but have adapted along the way, leading me to my current role as a Technology Product Manager. The change in my career path to technology was indeed surprising but at the same time, a nobrainer, since retail has significantly changed since I left FSU.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT LAUREN DALTON | CLASS OF 2007 & 2008 | TEXTILES What has been your favorite work experience since graduation?

What was the greatest challenge while transitioning from college to the "real world"?

I have been fortunate to travel the world with work, Hong Kong, Dubai, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Krakow, Guatemala… visiting factories and retailers of all sizes. Learning how to use a Chinese factory toilet (bring an extra pair of shoes…) and being escorted by armed guards in an Antiguan factory were definitely new experiences. Most of my traveling was done while working in Product Development at Eddie Bauer in Seattle, WA. I feel these experiences really brought my education to life. I was fortunate and humbled to see apparel production in action, and my life is forever changed having experienced these cultures and seeing how and where our products are made.

Kate Spade was a dream job (hello, $5 sample sale bags!), but moving to a small apartment in New York City was a huge lifestyle change. I cried the day I moved into that 150 square foot dorm-like setting. I was a suburban girl in the big city for the first time, and just had no clue what I was getting into. I quickly came around and was enamored by walls of purses and the finer things in life that Kate Spade exemplified. I recall during my first week being lost in the office, and not directionally but from a business acumen perspective. While I did have a business minor, I was naïve in thinking that fashion equaled glamour and pretty things. I quickly learned, fashion is business, and retail is tough. This insight prevailed throughout the rest of my career. I had to quickly grasp retail mathematics for product costing and data interpretation using Microsoft Excel and Sequel.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned post-grad?

I have learned that you must continue to grow, learn, and adapt ­- it doesn’t stop after college. I have not been afraid to reinvent myself multiple times. Zulily is a tech company first, and an eCommerce retailer second and I have had four roles in very different parts of the business during my six years. Maintaining relevancy and being financially secure are very important to me. Staying well-rounded is critical, especially living in Seattle where tech jobs rule! My new role in Product Management still relates back to my undergrad education, however, now my focus is on developing customer-centric technical tools rather than my earlier years developing apparel products. I am honing new skills in the software development world, partnering with data analysts, engineers, and business stakeholders. I’m hopeful this new role and my holistic retail background are setting me up for stability and happiness as my career progresses.

If you could give one piece of advice to current students, what would it be?

Be patient and listen and never be afraid to step away from your comfort zone. Remember that fear is your enemy if you aspire to grow and learn. No one owes you anything. Just because you have a degree doesn’t mean you will automatically get a great job. You must start somewhere and that’s usually at the bottom. In the retail field, doing data entry, logging samples, and creating digital product catalogs were ways I began real-world learning. Never say no to a job you feel is below you. I did whatever was needed at the time and it wasn’t always the fun stuff. Being a team player and taking the extra steps to do your best work will get you far. FACULTY SPOTLIGHTS JIM MORAN COLLEGE FACULTY SPOTLIGHTS The College features undergraduate and graduate faculty to give our readers a chance to meet and learn more of the individuals who shape JMC students' minds. These spotlights give you a chance to learn about what some of our faculty are up to inside and outside the classroom.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT TRAE HACKETT | TEACHING FACULTY | AUTOMOTIVE , COMMERCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP Can you briefly tell us a little about your background?

My background started in sales and marketing with several reputable companies including Black & Decker, DeWalt, Aramark Uniforms, and ITC communications. Shortly after that, I ventured into car sales at Saturn in Charlotte, NC where I became salesman of the month six out of my first twelve months with the organization. Several job opportunities opened up for my wife and me over the course of the years that allowed us to move to various areas in the South and Midwest. I eventually transitioned into athletics, facilitating player development initiatives for several different universities. This brought me to Florida State University. I assisted student-athletes transitioning into college and prepared them for their life after sports by facilitating activities through exposure, education, and experience.

Since I've been in Tallahassee, I started the SouthWood Street Market, which encourages entrepreneurs to market their local products, produce, and services to Tallahassee and surrounding areas.

What is your role within JMC, and what courses are you teaching?

I am the Program Coordinator for the Automotive Franchise Entrepreneurship cohort. I am currently teaching courses in Experiences in Entrepreneurship, Automotive Accounting, and Leadership Development.

I also oversee the Automotive Franchise Entrepreneurship Internship facilitated by Peter Boulware Toyota.

What has been your favorite part of teaching entrepreneurship students?

My favorite part of teaching entrepreneurship students has been seeing the growth of their entrepreneurial abilities once they're exposed to certain concepts and witnessing them apply what they've learned to their own businesses. It's very fulfilling to experience young entrepreneurs going through the process of becoming business owners. I'm appreciative of students allowing me to assist them during this process.

Could you tell us about the new Automotive Franchising program and what kind of courses or opportunities there are within the track?

The Automotive Franchising program is a track of the Commercial Entrepreneurship major. We are excited about the opportunity to partner with Peter Boulware and Peter Boulware Toyota to engage students to literally revolutionize the automobile industry through this program. Students will receive hands-on experience in every area of running a dealership including management, marketing, service, e-commerce, human resources, and supply chain just to name a few. The training students receive in this fast-paced environment is directly transferrable to any business endeavor they would like to pursue.

The courses specific to this track are in auto sales, customer financing, auto accounting, auto operations, and other designated courses within the Commercial Entrepreneurship major. The opportunities that exist are endless because the automotive industry is ready to burst with industry advancements in technology. The antiquated methods of the auto industry must catch up with the evolving economy. This provides opportunities for fresh ideas and enterprising students to affect the car buying and service experience. In addition, they are working with Peter Boulware and his staff, who are rising stars in the automotive industry. As the organization evolves and grows through acquisition, there will be opportunities to contribute in various areas.

JIM MORAN COLLEGE INTERNSHIP SPOTLIGHTS The College features undergraduate and graduate students who have completed outstanding internships each semester. These students had the opportunity to work with companies and individuals in a variety of industries and are excited to share these opportunities with our readers.

INTERNSHIP SPOTLIGHT ALLISON MARY PENA | COMMERICAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP WITH WHAT COMPANY DID YOU INTERN? Over the summer, I had the opportunity to intern at Kerigan Marketing Associates based in Mexico Beach, Florida. The company values creativity, aptitude, and efficiency. At its core, KMA is a group of diverse professionals that help businesses grow to the next level while providing a full range of marketing services. Some of the services include creating websites, writing commercials, managing social media, and running Google Ad campaigns.

PLEASE DESCRIBE YOUR ROLE AND ANY PROJECTS YOU WORKED ON DURING YOUR INTERNSHIP. As a social media strategist intern, I mainly created social media content for eight clients in different industries. I was also responsible for developing and implementing a marketing plan to drive sales. When I came into the internship, one of the clients had only been operating for a month and only had one sale. As someone in the process of creating a business, I couldn't help but care for the owner, and I wanted to do everything I could to help them make at least one more sale before my internship ended. I was assigned to create a new-to-world product marketing strategy for this client. This strategy was composed of hours of research. Pulling inspiration from the brand YETI, I developed a method and messaging that would benefit this specific client the most. Near the middle of my internship, the client received five sales, and two of them came directly from social media!

HOW HAS YOUR INTERNSHIP SHAPED YOUR CAREER PATH AND FUTURE ASPIRATIONS? My internship experience helped me build confidence in myself and my abilities. I was exposed to many facets that go into making a brand. I learned firsthand how important it is to pay attention to want the audience wants to hear, not so much what you want to say. My internship was so much more than just posting on social media. It played an integral part in creating a complete, successful, and fully realized digital marketing strategy. My time at KMA made me realize my passion for building brands and even landed me a job this fall as a director of marketing for a local startup known as Footy Training App.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU LEARNED AND BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU CONFRONTED DURING YOUR INTERNSHIP? Never stop learning! Your education doesn't end once you graduate college. There's plenty of information readily available to us, but few take advantage of this. Growing your skills and expertise in any area through an internship, hearing others' experiences, or teaching yourself something is vital. Your willingness to learn is what gives you a competitive edge. As for my biggest challenge. it took some time for me to adjust to reaching out for help. I can be a stubborn person and would often avoid asking for helping especially if it involved work. My internship made me realize that there is nothing wrong with asking for help; it can save you so much time.

INTERNSHIP SPOTLIGHT PATRICK MCCORMICK | RETAIL ENTREPRENEURSHIP WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER STUDENTS LOOKING FOR AN INTERNSHIP?

HOW HAS YOUR INTERNSHIP SHAPED YOUR CAREER PATH AND FUTURE ASPIRATIONS?

The biggest piece of advice I can give to other students looking for an internship is to know your worth. If you know you would do an incredible job at the company you are interested in, let that be known. Prepare as much as you can for interviews and chat with current employees on LinkedIn to show initiative and commitment.

This internship has deeply shaped my career path and future aspirations because it made me realize my potential in this industry and that it is exactly where I need to be. Fanatics also recognized my potential and recently offered me a full-time position as an assistant buyer in the merchandising department after I graduate in the Spring!

WITH WHAT COMPANY DID YOU INTERN? This Summer I had the privilege of interning with the Jacksonville-based online retail company Fanatics, who focuses on selling licensed sports clothing for all of the major sporting leagues like the NFL and NBA.

PLEASE DESCRIBE YOUR ROLE AND ANY PROJECTS YOU WORKED ON DURING YOUR INTERNSHIP. I worked as a merchandising intern with the NCAA department learning the roles of a buyer and all of the different responsibilities that go into the position. I met with a wide range of buyers in different leagues and clothing departments on a daily basis to deeper understand how to be a successful buyer and flourish in the industry. Some notable highlights include working on the Men’s and Woman’s Baseball College World Series, having one of my shirt designs incorporated into the clothing assortment for the 2021 NBA Finals, and showcasing my final project to the entire merchandising department which focused on building a more inclusive and diverse Fanatics community by better appealing to underrepresented sports fans.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU LEARNED AND BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU CONFRONTED DURING YOUR INTERNSHIP? The biggest lesson I learned during my internship is to never be afraid to ask questions. There is always something new to learn, and asking any sort of question should not be viewed as a weakness because no one knows everything. The biggest challenge I confronted during my internship was the pressure I put onto myself when developing the extensive final project I had to present to the entire merchandising department of over 100 experts in the industry. I knew that all eyes would be on me during the presentation and I really wanted to impress everyone which led me to work extremely hard for countless hours on the project. I put my all into the presentation and it paid off because I got great feedback and many of the ideas I presented have a high possibility of being incorporated into the business. Seeing all of my hard work pay off was such an incredible feeling and a great way to end my Summer at Fanatics.

This fall semester we had the honor of hosting the 10th annual 7 Under 30 event. We would like to thank Wendy Plant and Kaitlin Simpson for organizing, as well as Ysabella Rodriguez for facilitating the discussion. 7 Under 30 is an annual event for which seven alumni from Florida State University who have started businesses before they turned 30, come back to share their experiences.

2021 Fall JMC

Entrepreneurship Expo Big ideas and dreams of big business converged at the Fall 2021 Entrepreneurship Expo as students from Florida State University’s Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship showcased their companies, products, and services. The group of entrepreneurs gathered under tents on Landis Green included about 30 Jim Moran College current students, offering up a potpourri of products that ran from lawn-care services to handbags made from reclaimed boat sails.

Jim Moran College STEM Entrepreneur in Residence Jeff Whalen said the event is the culmination of hard work by the students enrolled in the college’s Experiences in Entrepreneurship courses, and it’s also an example of the college delivering on its mission to inspire innovation and an entrepreneurial mindset in its students. “We are an entrepreneurship program so it seems intuitive that our students should graduate having started and run a business,” he said. “During these courses, which span two consecutive semesters, they all start businesses and this expo is their opportunity to sell what they’ve created through the curriculum.”

A Huge THANK YOU to FSU Alumni & Night Cap co-founder Michael Benarde for coming out to the Fall expo!

At the entrance into the expo, Michael Benarde stood outside his own tent where he was presenting his product Night Cap, a flexible cover that fits over glasses to prevent cocktails from being spiked. Benarde developed Night Cap with his sister, Shirah. The product gained national attention when it was featured on the ABC show Shark Tank and earned a $60,000 bid from “shark” Lori Greiner in exchange for a 25% stake in the company.

A native of West Palm Beach, Benarde said the Jim Moran College offered the resources he needed to successfully launch his product.

“The Jim Moran College was huge in getting us started with all the resources they made available to us,” he said. “We won four pitch competitions, which helped with funding to start the business. We also were able to use the FSU Business Law Clinic, which was extremely important for trademark registration.” Benarde said Night Cap continues to grow. The product is also now available with customizable logos and can be purchased online on Amazon and in stores, including Urban Outfitters.

Coming Soon: The STEMpreneur Lab

The Mutoh printer allows the creation of photorealistic images with a broad range of colors and fabrics that can be printed. Students and faculty have the opportunity to incorporate these digitally printed textiles into their design and research projects.

The Lab usage is comprised of four key assets: 1) a walkthru augmented reality timeline, 2) interactive holographic avatar interview booths, 3) living STEM business map and 4) The Foundry. The exhibitions of STEM entrepreneurship culture and history will allow for a whole new level of relationship development for individuals at FSU with the outside STEM business ecosystem. The Foundry will have the resources needed to conduct feasibility assessments and proof of concept experiments using commercially available tools.

ThermaNOLE Comfort Lab® The sweating manikin systems located within the ThermaNOLE Comfort Lab® are operated not only to assess the entire garment system's heat and moisture management, evaluating their insulation and moisture breathability, but also to simulate walking through the use of an articulated walking frame. By measuring these values on a human form, the garments can be evaluated under realistic field conditions (temperature, humidity, wind speed, etc.) in a controlled manner at the chamber.

Retail Experience Lab The Retail Merchandising Lab was originally established in 1994 as a state-of-the-art, hands-on learning experience for students entering the retail industry. The lab was renovated in fall 2020 to reflect the radical advancement of technology in the retail industry. Between this advancement and the increased focus on consumer data, the retail industry has seen a major shift to digital commerce.

Reinventing our lab to include emerging technology and a more digital experience will provide our students with an unmatched level of preparation for entering the retail industry. We will continue to provide the students with brick-and-mortar retail visual merchandising skills, while layering in the omnichannel visual merchandising experience in our newly renovated Retail Experiences and Innovation Studio (“The Studio”).

Body Scanning Lab The new SizeStream 3D body scanner is housed in the Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship's Body Scanning Lab. The body scanner is utilized for design and product development purposes. Body scanning is a rapid and precise way of generating 3D body images of people in a stationary position. The scanner scans the entire body in approximately 10 seconds and rapidly produces a true-toscale 3D body model.

InNOLEvate & Create:

The JMC Entrepreneurship Box is Launched The newly created InNOLEvate & Create box was made to showcase businesses Jim Moran College students and alumni. This box will be given to the board of trustees, donors, and other beneficiaries of the college.

Here are some of the businesses and products showcased in the box this fall: DivvyUp Founded on August 19th, 2014 by sophomores in the entrepreneurship program, DivvyUp has grown from a $400 loan to a company that just had the privilege of giving away its millionth pair of socks. The inspiration for DivvyUp came from a trip to the local homeless shelter, where the founders were shocked to learn that one of the biggest ways to help was not “food” or “shelter”, but clean socks. This is just the beginning, but they’ve already had such a positive impact on this problem.

Dunsel’s Founded by Jon Virga and William McCarthy, they wanted to create a business that could be a force of good by reducing plastic pollution making its way to the oceans. Taking their passions for sailing and surfing, they used discarded sailboat sails and gave them a second life by making them into bags and other materials. They are actively working on adding products to their line and we are so excited to see them grow.

Hygge Rugs Founded in 2020 by Samantha Salstein and Gabriel Mustaciuolo, Hygge Rugs creates handcrafted, customized rugs and accessories that allow people and businesses to show off their unique style and branding. Featured in the box are their “mug rugs”, miniature handcrafted coasters the perfect size for a desktop.

NightCap Michael and Shirah Benarde started NightCap in hopes of protecting girls from one of the most prevalent problems on college campuses, drink spiking. They created the innovative product of a wearable drink cover, inside of a hair scrunchie. NightCap has won multiple awards including Florida State University’s InNOLEvation Challenge, Tallahassee Startup Week’s Annual Pitch Competition, FSU’s Turkey Tank, and FSU’s Jim Moran Micro-Grant. Nightcap was also featured on ABC’s hit television series Shark Tank on February 5th, 2021, where they scored one of the fastest deals in Shark Tank history with Lori Greiner.

Gifts for Confidence Gifts for Confidence is a 501c3 nonprofit whose mission is to empower young women through sewing education in Ethiopia, Africa. What began as a Girl Scout Gold award project six years ago, their after-school sewing program has impacted over 40 girls and their families. The scarves are sewn by the girls during their curriculum then sold online to generate revenue for the program and to pay the girls. Gifts for Confidence was a finalist in the FSU InNOLEvation challenge winning the title for “Most Viable Business” in 2018.

Southside Charms Created by JMC Student, Alie Romano, Southside Charms is a handmade jewelry business that offers on-trend necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings, and more! "I strive to make high-quality jewelry at affordable prices. Southside Charms is made to live in, meaning you can wear it on a daily basis and should never have to worry about taking it off," Alie says. Alie aims to create quality jewelry, but she also strives to stay on top of current trends. As a result, Southside Charms is constantly evolving. Here at JMC, we cannot wait to see how she will grow.

Inaugural Women in Entrepreneurship Event JIM MORAN COLLEGE OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP PARTNERED WITH TALLAHASSEE WOMEN WEDNESDAYS TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL WOMEN IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP WEEK. Colleges, universities, businesses, and non-profits across the world joined together for the 8th annual Women in Entrepreneurship Week.

Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship (JMC) partnered with Tallahassee Women Wednesdays to host an afternoon of networking and a robust panel discussion to celebrate National Women in Entrepreneurship Week. Students, faculty, and members from the community gathered at the Jim Moran Building, on October 20, 2021, for the event.

The event was free of charge and offered both in-person and Zoom attendance options to accommodate comfort levels. The turnout was tremendous and we are thankful for the support of the WIE launch.

MEET THE NRF RISING STAR FOR 2021-2022

By Carly Woollard, NRF’s 2022 Rising Star Hello! My name is Carly Woollard, and I am a sophomore studying retail entrepreneurship with a minor in English. It is an honor for me to represent FSU as NRF’s 2022 Rising Star.

Being chosen to attend the Student Program in New York City will allow me to join sessions with top executives from wellknown retailers. My family lives in Tampa, and I am the youngest of three girls being the second to attend FSU (go Noles!). After three years as a crew member at Trader Joe's, I have had the opportunity to transition into the exciting world of fashion with Nordstrom. This past summer working for this luxury retailer has reinforced my hopes and dreams of pursuing a career in fashion and how incredibly right it is for me. When working forty-five hours a week felt like the time of my life, the famous quote “you’ll never work a day in your life if you love what you do” dawned on me… this is what I was meant to do, and FSU continues to give me the tools I need to get there.

This semester we were excited to have the students back on campus and in the classrooms face to face. The Retail Center has continued to put together virtual networking sessions with our top retail partners here at FSU this Fall. The networking sessions were designed to connect students who are actively pursuing internships and job opportunities with recruiters from many companies. We hosted sessions with Bealls, Burlington, E&J Gallo Winery, Hearth & Soul, Target, Enterprise, Carter’s, Neiman Marcus, and Perry Ellis! Each networking session showcased their company’s culture and opportunities available for internships and careers. The retailers gave the students a chance to ask questions at the end of each session which provided a valuable experience for our students to practice their networking skills and to build relationships.

FSF COMPETITION WINNER Written by Emily Gordon, 2021 FSF Competitor

I am so grateful for my experience with the Fashion Scholarship Fund Case Study competition this year. Applying for the Design and Product Development case study was a little out of my comfort zone as a merchandising student, but this competition has boosted my confidence not only in Design and Product Development but also in utilizing technology in the retail world. When starting this case study, I had little faith in using Adobe features but now it is something I can add to the skills portion of my resume and touch on in interviews. While the FSF competition is a commitment, it was all worth it seeing my business idea and designs come to life. I owe all my success to Dr. Ridgway. If it was not for her Retail Technology course and mentorship, I never would have attempted this competition. I cannot recommend enough for students to compete in this case study competition. This program runs for a full calendar year, and you can receive a travel stipend for completing the ambassador requirements to attend the NRF Student Program in New York City! This Student Program is a great opportunity to explore and connect with well-known retailers and can potentially lead to a full-time position. As the ambassador, you will work alongside the Retail Center to increase student involvement with the NRF. This includes recruiting new students to the Foundation, advertising NRF events on social media, hosting information sessions, and charitable drives. This position has taught me valuable organizational and leadership skills that will be a great addition to my resume and LinkedIn profile. If you are passionate about helping your fellow students explore the world of retail, then this is the perfect position for you!

The face-to-face classes offered in the product development major will provide students with hands-on experience in innovation and commercialization, further developing abilities to implement the MSE program's coursework into today’s highly competitive and lucrative field of entrepreneurship and product development. The optional international exposure will also give the MSE students the added value they need to be competitive on the global stage.

Master of Science in Entrepreneurship

HOSPITALITY ENTREPRENEURSHIP The online hospitality entrepreneurship major in the Master of Science in Entrepreneurship (MSE) program will focus on entrepreneurial endeavors in hospitality – opening, building, or innovating new hospitality enterprises. The program will rely heavily on the acquisition and application of skills in real-world scenarios. The degree will provide advanced online education to allow graduates to pursue careers in a variety of corporate, government and/or academic professions.

SOCIAL AND SUSTAINABLE ENTERPRISES The Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship's interdisciplinary Master of Science in Entrepreneurship (MSE) with a major in Social and Sustainable Enterprises prepares students to create and manage sustainable companies that meet the needs of the present without compromising the future. A social and sustainable enterprise is determined by its Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) which refers to the three central factors in measuring the sustainability and societal impact of a business. These criteria help entrepreneurs create a business model (or executives transition to a business model) that incorporates people, planet, and profits in a way that mitigates risk and fulfills the demands of consumers for more equitable and sustainable companies.
