A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN Dear Students, Alumni and Friends, I don’t know about you, but we at the JMC are very happy to say “goodbye” to 2020! On the other hand, CONGRATULATIONS to our graduating seniors and the graduate students for 2021! You persevered through one of the most difficult years that we have lived through. We have definitely turned lemons into lemonade with the help of our alumni, friends, faculty and staff who have mentored and guided our students and supported us all during this difficult time.

We had over 50% of our courses during the spring semester in a face-to-face classroom. What I have heard from both faculty and students is that all were thrilled to be back in the classroom and have enjoyed seeing everyone in person, even though we all remained six feet apart and masked.

For most of us who Zoomed several times a day, seeing folks around campus and students throwing frisbees on Landis Green was pure joy.

Our online courses have continued to serve students well with faculty working tirelessly to make sure the courses are challenging and offering appropriate content. Even though we will come back to a somewhat normal schedule in fall 2021, some things may still be online such as speakers, meetings and some elective courses. The JMC continues to grow stronger and better every day. We will be offering one new online master’s degree program in Social and Sustainable Enterprises in fall 2021, headed and championed

by Dr. Mark McNees, our own Social Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR). This program has a strong interdisciplinary approach with faculty from across FSU and top experts from around the world teaching these graduate courses.

In addition, we will be offering two new undergraduate programs, one BS degree in STEM Entrepreneurship that was designed and develop by our own STEM EIR, Dr. Jeff Whalen. This undergraduate major has the support of our STEM colleagues from across campus and requires a STEM minor as part of the degree. We are also thrilled to be the first program in the United States to offer a concentration in Franchise Automotive Entrepreneurship within our Commercial Entrepreneurship major. This new program offers hands-on, real life experiences in the dynamic day-to-day operations of a franchised automobile dealership. Mr. Trae Hackett, the advisor and coordinator of this program, has worked closely with the present and past owners of the Peter Boulware Toyota Dealership in Tallahassee, FL to design this very exciting new concentration.

All of these programs offer FSU students excellent experiential instruction with increased potential of employment upon graduation. Stay tuned for newer programs as we work to provide exceptional undergraduate and graduate curriculum in Entrepreneurship.

CONNOR JONES | COMMERCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation I hope to secure a local job so I can implement the knowledge and skills I learned in the Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship while continuing to make an impact in Tallahassee.

What is your favorite memory from your time at FSU? My favorite memory from my time at FSU was in 2019 when many of my church friends and I went to a beach weekend at Panama City Beach. It was a time of great fun and laughter, and I am forever grateful for that weekend.

What is the most valuable thing you learned while in the Jim Moran College?

One of the most valuable things I learned during my time in the Jim Moran College was taught to me by a guest speaker in one of my classes, Jay Revell. He taught me that the popular saying "in business it's not what you know, it's who you know" is only half of the truth. What matters on top of who you know is "who thinks of you and why?" This question is profound and gives me great motivation to make sure the people I work with will remember me when they need someone with my skillset.

What advice would you give to incoming students?

For any incoming student, remember that it's not the end of the world if you don't know what you want to do in life or what business you want to start at 21 or 22. The more experience in entrepreneurship you have, the more wisdom you will gain, and for many that will take time.

What surprised you most about this major?

What surprised me the most about this major was learning how much an up-and-coming business owner needs to consider when planning his/her business. Finding a potential solution to a problem that can be lucrative is only the first of many steps one needs to take before making their first dollar. A business presents many challenges, and that's what makes an entrepreneur's journey that much more exciting.

Who within the Jim Moran College impacted you the most?

Every one of my professors has impacted me in my entrepreneurial journey thus far, and I could not be more thankful for their wisdom and knowledge. Two particular professors, however, spurred my passion for business more than most. They are Bob Garner and Blake Geoghagan. These men truly care about their students, and it shows. Thank you, Mr. G and Professor Garner, your teaching has made me a better man and will continue to do so.

SHANNON MELLISH | RETAIL ENTREPRENEURSHIP

What is your favorite thing about the JMC/Major so far?

My favorite thing about the major so far is how many opportunities that are presented to us throughout the semester. I really feel that the teachers have your best interest at heart and really try to connect with you retailers to get internships with. I had teachers help me before the career fair and look at my resume as well as help reach out to retailers I told them I was interested in. They do a good job with setting up sessions with representatives from companies to get to know more about who you would like to intern for.

What are your career goals?

Realistically, I would like to be a buyer for a company I enjoy working for and would love to incorporate traveling into my job as well. This is something I have been interested in since I came into college and fashion is always something I have been super passionate about.

What have you enjoyed most this fall?

This fall I have really enjoyed having a position at Clutch Magazine, Florida State University's premier fashion magazine. I am currently a Stylist for the magazine which means for each section of the magazine the director shows us what kind of theme they want for their spread and the Stylists go out and pick what the models will wear that correlates with the theme. We see out the outfits from the fitting to the shoots. Clutch does an amazing job, you wouldn't even believe it is student run. It is a place where people with different creative ideas can come together and make something amazing. It truly is a positive environment, and everyone feels like family.

What are your plans after graduation?

I have applied to several incubators targeted in the Atlanta, GA and Austin, TX areas in effort to acquire seed funding and progress my start-up, Roccus Technologies, in a growing tech environment.

What is the most valuable thing you learned while in the Jim Moran College?

The most valuable skill I can reflect on learning is the power of network.

Opportunities will always make themselves available to individuals that make themselves available to opportunities.

Who within the Jim Moran College impacted you the most?

Ron Frazier has been a valuable mentor and friend throughout my tenure in the JMC grad program. From class to 1v1 business sessions, I feel Frazier has always invested 100 percent into my progress as a person and entrepreneur through his expertise, network, and mentorship.

What advice would you give to incoming students?

I’d advise rising graduate students to consider what value and/or identity they’d want to bring to a company or establish in their own start-up after this program. Take time to discover career paths or start-up opportunities that are relevant to the value one wishes to offer and utilize the JMC staff and community to bridge connections they may have as well.

CHANDLER DAVIS | CLASS OF 2019 | COMMERCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Chandler Davis graduated in the first graduating class from the Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship in 2019 with a major in Commercial Entrepreneurship. Chandler is a great representative of the things one can accomplish with this degree and more. When speaking with Chandler, she was gracious enough to share a few insights with us.

What have you been up to since graduation?

Since graduating Spring ’19 I moved to Miami, FL and graduated with my Masters in Real Estate Development + Urbanism from University of Miami (though my loyalty is always to the Garnet and Gold) summer of 2020. I worked a year in a corporate development firm in Miami and honed my skills. At the end of April 2021 I moved to Durango, CO and currently working for a development start-up with my partner and beginning our first construction of a luxury single-family home to build and sell.

What do you miss most about the Entrepreneurship Program, FSU, and Tallahassee?

Everything! I miss the amazing friends I made in the 2019 JMS graduating class, Stetson's at the Moon, and the ability to incubate an idea within JMC. Being able to work closely with professors and bounce ideas back and forth with your peers in a classroom is something I miss so much. Coworkers do not compare to academic conversations.

What has been your biggest “real world” challenge?

Taxes. Aiding a start-up business and preparing the ownership structure and creating the proper entities has been difficult and it takes a team. Working alongside hired professionals (such as a CPA and Tax Attorney) is what helps prepare YOU for success. It is hard taking a step back and learning from the experts at times, but knowing when to do so will help you and your businesses’ success.

What is one piece of advice you would give students applying to the Jim Moran College?

Opportunities for a young entrepreneur will come. But do not sit around and wait for it, work for the man if you have to, hustle, learn, and ask questions. Take the time to really understand what other professionals have to say, don’t just agree and move on. Be professional. Those who you work for, alongside, and those who offer you a hand in some way, ALWAYS say thank you, gratitude comes back tenfold.

JEFF WHALEN | TEACHING FACULTY I | STEM & COMMERCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Can you briefly tell us a little about your background?

What are some of your favorite things to do in your spare time?

Adventuring with friends and family, enjoying great food and fixing broken things.

What is your favorite part of working for the Jim Moran College ?

My favorite part of working for JMC is that I get to collaborate with amazing people on the administration, faculty, staff and students.

What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs?

So much I could say here but I would have to recite everything I talk to my students about in my classes. If I were to try to sum it all up and reflect on what I really think would be my opinion on the best single piece of advice for an aspiring entrepreneur, it would be to be disciplined in your venture creation journey.

Don’t accept validation for your business concept that isn’t the most pure and equivocal form of validation in the universe, the pre-sale. So many new ventures fail because the founders believe they have something great to offer, but the problem is just that, it’s only those founders that think it’s great and their customer (the actual person they need to be focusing on the determine if it’s great or not) never got to provide them with their validation of the offering before it was brought to market. If we can maintain an ultra-high level of discipline in what guides our entrepreneurial decisions, we can remove risk from our efforts in ways that success or failure is no longer dependent on luck, fate or deceiving other people. Success can be determined instead by a systematic approach with a positive attitude and a boat load of entrepreneurial discipline.

Technically I’m a scientist. I moved from Davie, FL to Tallahassee, FL in 2001 to pursue a medical profession at Florida State University, but quickly realized I wanted to change paths and received my BS in biochemistry in 2005 followed by my PhD in inorganic chemistry in 2009 (both from FSU). After graduate school I joined the National High Magnetic Field Lab (MagLab as we call it) in Tallahassee, FL as a postdoctoral and in 2012 joined the MagLab research faculty where I served as principal investigator on US Dept. of Energy and US Dept. of Defense sponsored research projects in new solid-state materials and electromagnet systems development. Really though my passion has always been fishing and you can find me most sunny weekends with my wife and two children offshore in the northern Gulf of Mexico hunting grouper, snapper, scallops and adventures in general. Second to fishing I focus heavily on innovation and commercialization. I have several issued patents and many peer-reviewed publications, and have commercialized my innovations in multiple FSU spin out companies. I made the switch and joined the teaching faculty full-time at the Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship in 2019 as the STEM Entrepreneur in Residence where I have developed and instruct a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses at JMC. I am the director for the undergraduate bachelor’s program for STEM Entrepreneurship where we teach courses such as Enough To Be Dangerous, The Entrepreneur’s Perspective on a Survey of STEM, Data Science Entrepreneurship, Healthcare Entrepreneurship and Entrepreneurship in Contemporary Society, I also teach the Colloquium and Prototyping courses in our graduate Product Development master’s program and serve on various JMC and FSU committees. I am a member of the Leon County Magnetic Task Force and the Director of Magnetics Corporation.

On Thursday, March 25th, The Florida State University Chapter of the Black Retail Action Group hosted an entrepreneurship panel for students on campus. This panel consisted of five panelists: Donna King (CEO/Head Designer of P. Sherrod & Co.), Charla R. Mitch (Fashion Designer and Shop Owner of CR Clothing Co.), Cedric Brown (Designer- Cedric Brown Collections), and Idunnu Tomori (FSU Grad and Founder of Misayo House Jewelry). Panelists answered multiple questions about business start ups and the realities of being a person of color in the retail industry.

Attendants were also encouraged to ask panelists questions.

On Thursday, April 8, The Florida State University Chapter of the Black Retail Action Group hosted their last meeting, "Fake It Til' You Make It". This event featured BRAG advisor and professor in the College of Entrepreneurship, Mrs. Christie Hand. In this meeting participants were able to ask Mrs. Hand questions about professional development and getting yourself into your desired position. Mrs. Hand gave some great insight on retail careers, confidence in the workspace and achieving your goals.

CLUTCH TEAM OVERCOMES PANDEMIC CHALLENGES

CLUTCH magazine, faced with a declared pandemic, chose to adapt and evolve like many organizations determined to succeed during a restrictive climate.

Under the leadership of Makayla Hineman (EIC) and Isaac Quillet (CD), staff was personally selected with a goal of providing an outlet for creativity while also fostering much needed personal connections. Interviews, brainstorming sessions, and photoshoots, all required an appreciation for safety protocols without diminishing the overall integrity of the publication.

A sense of camaraderie developed between likeminded individuals embracing a vision to create a visual respite from outside worldly chaos.

The Media Team, featuring Macy Kissel, Lizzy Zarello, and Jessica Wilsey (to name a few) grew exponentially due to their ingenuity and acute awareness for the increasing need by readers for more social engagement. The Public Relations team, headed by Julia Padavona and Saviana Calderon, expanded connections with various local businesses, as well as national, when it partnered with Bacardi, who generously provided goodie bags for the Fall ‘20 and Spring ‘21 release parties.

Issues 28 and 29 were not produced without challenges in the shadow of a pandemic, but the Clutch team embraced them and laid the foundation that assures those who follow have solid ground to build upon.

InNOLEvation® Challenge 2021 First Place Winner is Crowned By: Wendy Plant

A

team of six students from FSU’s Panama City campus took home the $10,000 Mark K. Scott Infinity Funds first-place prize at the 2021 InNOLEvation Challenge March 5.

Chaos Audio earned the top honor for their wireless, all-in-one, multi-tool, guitar pedal which they’ve named the Stratus.

“Chaos Audio has done a great job creating a team with diverse skill sets,” said Wendy Plant, director of the InNOLEvation Center for Student Engagement at the Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship. “Each one of them has a distinct role to play in the business, and they have all learned to stay focused on what is best for the company. It is rare to see a large team of undergraduate students who work so well together.”

Winning team members are Landon McCoy, a junior electrical engineering major from Panama City Beach, mechanical engineering majors Robert Copsey and Cameron Jones, electrical engineering majors Armis Sunday and Tiffany Carter, and recent computer engineering graduate Sam Lamb.

McCoy said he and his teammates were incredibly excited and that a lot of hard work had gone into preparing for the competition.

“The competition itself was very fun and exciting,” McCoy said. “We practiced a ton. The whole previous week was nothing but practicing our presentation. We even had a practice panel of judges.”

McCoy praised his InNOLEvation competitors and said Chaos Audio plans to use the prize money to cover costs related to licensing and manufacturing and tooling costs.

“It helps us stay on track with our estimates.

We are super excited about it,” he said of the win.

Eight finalists pitched before a panel of judges Friday, March 5, and Chaos Audio took the top honor.

Chaos Audio’s Stratus is an intelligent, all-inone stomp box and multi-tool for guitarists.

The audio effects market has a gap in customer demand between versatility and affordability.

Amateurs and enthusiasts are faced with the problem of choosing between economy products with limited functionality, or high-end products with large price tags. Stratus is economically

positioned against alternative products while providing a suite of versatile tools and a modular effects platform that they lack.

The annual InNOLEvation Challenge provides students from all majors and all grade levels with the opportunity to gain valuable insight and experience in innovation and entrepreneurship.

This business model competition focuses on identifying problems and potential solutions, building effective teams and precisely defining the assumptions of a new venture, testing those assumptions in the field, and then pivoting based on the lessons learned. The entire competition took place over two semesters with students submitting parts of the business model canvas along the way.

Other prize winners are: $4,000 Jim Moran Challenge Social Venture Award – ReSAUCEUL $4,000 Spirit of Entrepreneurship Award – Manser & Edbrooke Technology Inc. $4,000 Most Viable Award – Dunsel’s $4,000 Most Scalable Award – MediKool $4,000 Most Innovative Award – Zing $500 Finalists – StayingIn and M.E.N.D.

The FSU Chapter of SAM wins awards in national SAM Conference BY

The Florida State University Chapter of SAM (Society for Advancement of Management) participated in a business skills and case competition held during the National SAM Conference. During the conference, there were also awards given to chapters and individuals based on their service to the community through activity with their local chapters. The FSU Chapter had a big night, coming away with many of the top honors in the undergraduate division. The FSU SAM chapter won the Outstanding Chapter Award in the small chapter division. Even with the COVID restrictions, the club managed to participate in 8 community service projects, including carrying groceries to cars at a local food pantry and painting a deck and fence at the Goodnews Outreach campus.

Kaitlyn Killeen and Satya Simpson were recognized as Regional Student Award winners while Harry Hirst was recognized as a National Student Award winner. In addition to the National Award, Harry was selected as the Overall Student of the Year award winner for the SAM national organization.

The FSU chapter was represented in the Business Case competition and written Business Plan competition. The team of Harry Hirst, Kaitlyn Killeen, Satya Simpson, and Mark Geller finished second in both events in the undergraduate division.

FSU was represented by three students in the Business Skills events which included a Knowledge Bowl, Extemporaneous Speaking, and Business Pitch competitions. FSU earned a clean sweep in the Extemporaneous Speaking event, with Connor Jones placing first, Davis Taylor finishing second, and Ryan O’Malley winning third place. FSU also swept the Business Pitch Competition, with Davis Taylor taking home the top prize, Ryan O’Malley finishing second, and Connor Jones coming in third. In the Knowledge Bowl, FSU’s Connor Jones placed second while Ryan O’Malley and Davis Taylor finished tied for third.

The last awards given were for overall achievement in all events. In the Individual Business Skills category, FSU’s Ryan O’Malley finished second while Connor Jones finished third. The FSU SAM Chapter also won first place in the Overall Team Business Skills competition in the Undergraduate Division.

RETAIL CORNER NEWS AND HEADLINES BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE FSU RETAIL CENTER

FSF COMPETITION WINNER

By Alfred Yeh The anxiety from waiting for the results of this competition is both indescribable and excruciating. Every year I put countless hours into doing something that I love. The fruits of your labor truly are the sweetest. Designing for the FSF competition has truly been a deep honor and my growth has progressed by leaps and bounds. Being a self-taught designer was a testament to the fashion design industry that you don't need a pedigree to create beautiful things. Attending the award gala in NYC was both enlightening and humbling. The sheer amount of people that support this competition and the consideration it took to select everyone there was very inspiring. NYC is also just simply the motherland of creative energy and it is so abundant that I want to absorb everything and give it right back. I implore everyone to take part in such a prestigious competition and I want to thank Mrs. Langston and the other faculty for supporting my work!

NRF STUDENT CHALLENGE

By Grayce Halter and Andree Randall The NRF Student Challenge is an annual business case competition that gives undergraduate students from eligible universities the chance to use what they’ve learned in the classroom and apply it to a realworld setting case study. The NRF provides numerous scholarships to students as well as great career opportunities. Each year the case study challenge is different, and FSU puts together a team of students to complete this challenge and represent our university. The 2021-2022 FSU team includes Alara Oran, Andie Nicholas, Abigail Gleason, and Nnandi Jean-Francois. These students are working hard to complete this case study challenge in hopes of winning a scholarship this year from the NRF. We are wishing them the best of luck!

TARGET NETWORKING SESSIONS

Throughout my junior and senior years, I attended multiple networking sessions that Target hosted. These sessions were very beneficial to students who were seeking summer internships or employment opportunities. The latest networking session I attended was hosted

by Ayesha Sayed where she explained the importance of the new ways they are reaching out to their guests online and in-store. She also spoke about the various private label brands that Target has to offer and gave us insight on the structure of the store. At the end, we were able to ask Ayesha any questions that we had. I want to provide this overview in hopes that students will take advantage of the unique opportunities that the university provides us with. While attending these sessions, the Target employees were very down to earth and insisted on us reaching out afterwards for follow-up information. Attending these sessions allowed me to build professional relationships, stay informed with Target opportunities, acquire tips for interviews, and to receive criticism surrounding my career profiles.

My experience overall was extremely positive, opportunities like these should always be taken advantage of considering the benefits that arise.

VIRTUAL NETWORKING SESSIONS

This year, due to the circumstances with COVID-19, the Retail Center has put together Virtual Networking sessions with our top retail partners here at FSU. The Networking sessions were designed to connect students who are actively pursuing internships and job opportunities with recruiters from each company. This year we have hosted sessions with Bealls, Kohl’s, UNIQLO, Burlington, Dillard's, E&J Gallo, and Target! This experience has been so positive and extremely helpful to not only the students but the recruiters as well. Each Zoom session consisted of the recruiters providing information about their company, experience in the work field, and open question dialogue to interact with one another. This was an amazing opportunity for students to take advantage of while searching for internships and jobs, and allowed them to start building relationships with the companies!

UNIQLO SESSION

By Claudia Nieto I had a wonderful experience attending the UNIQLO virtual networking session. I got great insight into UNIQLO’s background and gained more knowledge on their missions and visions for the future. Both Angela Liu and Jillian Speranza showed their knowledge of UNIQLO and expressed how great it is to work for an amazing company. Both recruiters went into detail about the UNIQLO Manager Candidate program and their internship opportunities. Not to mention, Angela and Jillian were eager to answer any questions students had. Overall, as a junior who is currently looking for internships in the retail industry going to the virtual networking session with UNIQLO opened my eyes to the amazing opportunities they offer and how wonderful they are as a company.

WHAT’S AHEAD AT THE RETAIL CENTER?

By Grayce Halter and Andree Randall As we look forward to this upcoming fall, we expect many exciting things ahead. In previous years, we have typically hosted our Annual Scholarship Dinner in the Fall, where we award over 30 commendable students with scholarships. The Scholarship Dinner is a networking event attended by students, faculty, and retailers. Due to COVID, we were not able to host our 26th annual dinner in 2020, but the Fall of 2021 looks bright. We are in the works of creating a new Recognition reception event that is smaller, more intimate, and still just as exciting, to recognize students for their hard work and achievements and it allows them to network with retailers.

Master of Science in Retail Entrepreneurship TEXTILES & APPAREL ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Learn innovative approaches to textile testing and analysis, manufacturing, distribution, and product design and development while exploring new technologies and gaining a better understanding of the advancements in the current textile and apparel industry. Develop and strengthen research and technical skills needed for new product development and management, working one on one with renowned faculty members in the textile and apparel field. Complete the MS in Retail Entrepreneurship with a major in Textiles and Apparel Entrepreneurship (MS-TAE) degree in one year, with an option to travel abroad to add valued international experience.

Master of Science in Entrepreneurship PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT ENTREPRENEURSHIP

The product development entrepreneurship major, in the Master of Science in Entrepreneurship program (MSE), will prepare individuals who seek to work in any company, private or public, advancing their knowledge and skills in product design and development. The face-to-face classes offered in the product development major will provide students with hands-on experience in innovation and commercialization, further developing abilities to implement the MSE program's coursework into today’s highly competitive and lucrative field of entrepreneurship and product development. The optional international exposure will also give the MSE students the added value they need to be competitive on the global stage.

Master of Science in Entrepreneurship HOSPITALITY ENTREPRENEURSHIP

The online hospitality entrepreneurship major in the Master of Science in Entrepreneurship (MSE) program will focus on entrepreneurial endeavors in hospitality – opening, building, or innovating new hospitality enterprises. The program will rely heavily on the acquisition and application of skills in real-world scenarios. The degree will provide advanced online education to allow graduates to pursue careers in a variety of corporate, government and/or academic professions.

Master of Science in Entrepreneurship SOCIAL AND SUSTAINABLE ENTERPRISES

The Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship's interdisciplinary Master of Science in Entrepreneurship (MSE) with a major in Social and Sustainable Enterprises prepares students to create and manage sustainable companies that meet the needs of the present without compromising the future. A social and sustainable enterprise is determined by its Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) which refers to the three central factors in measuring the sustainability and societal impact of a business. These criteria help entrepreneurs create a business model (or executives transition to a business model) that incorporates people, planet, and profits in a way that mitigates risk and fulfills the demands of consumers for more equitable and sustainable companies.
