The most valuable thing that I have learned is the value of a pivot. All too often we get so caught up in trying to make something work, usually because of the expenses already incurred, that we forget that a major change may be what is needed. The value of being able to see when a square peg will no longer work for that round hole is invaluable. This can be applied to all aspects of your life - your business, a job, a school project and even your relationships with others.

Alumni Spotlight Deanna Lopez graduated from the College of Business in 2016 with a double major in Entrepreneurship and Retail Management. As a more recent alum with a foot in both entrepreneurship and retail, Deanna is a wonderful representation of an honorary Jim Moran School student. When speaking with Deanna, she was gracious enough to share a few insights with us.

WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST ABOUT THE ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAM/FSU/TALLAHASSEE?

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT

Bob Garner

Building the best school of entrepreneurship in the country is no small task. To assist us in accomplishing this goal, we have maintained our commitment to sourcing and hiring only the most exceptional entrepreneurial educators. The students in the Jim Moran School of entrepreneurship have one-on-one access to these world-class faculty members at all times, and we genuinely believe this is one of our strengths. Among these faculty members is Bob Garner, a veteran of entrepreneurship and a gifted instructor. Mr. Garner has been a professor and trusted mentor since 2008, and during his time at FSU he has impacted thousands of students. He is also the advisor for the FSU Society for Advancement of Management (SAM) chapter and serves on the national SAM board of directors. We are proud of what Mr. Garner does for our students, and that is the reason he was chosen as our featured faculty member. Keep reading below to learn more about Mr. Garner and all that he does for our school, community and beyond.

What is your background?

I graduated from FSU with a degree in management in 1981 and took a job with the transportation company, Roadway Express. I spent 12 years with them and held positions such as Operations Manager in Valdosta, Georgia, Driver Superintendent in Miami, Florida, Assistant Terminal Manager in Atlanta Georgia, and Terminal Manager in Montgomery Alabama. I left Roadway in 1993 and moved to South Arkansas where I opened three Hardees restaurants. In 1999 I sold the restaurants, moved back to Tallahassee, and completed my MBA at FSU. In 2002 I accepted a job as Chairman of the Business Department at Flagler College in

Class of 2019, first to graduate from the Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship FIRST CLASS FAREWELL

BY KIRSTEN FRANDSEN In the Fall of 2017, the first Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship cohort started their majors in Commercial and Social Entrepreneurship. These students were the first, and therefore essentially the “guinea pigs” for this grand experiment. As entrepreneurs, they handled the pivots, bumps, and wrong turns with ease and grace, and not without suggestions along the way. This first cohort of 80 students has taken ownership and have helped shape and mold the school and programs into what they are today.

During their time in the Jim Moran School, these students have been through many changes - housed in three different locations, creation of one additional major and five additional minors, an increase in faculty and staff by 19, as well as a rollout of a new master’s program.

They have embraced their entrepreneurial mindset and innovative spirit and put their time and talents to work in helping develop and make the Jim Moran School the best that it can be.

These brilliant young adults will leave this behind as part of their legacy.

It is our greatest hope that these students will continue to be involved with the school, and we can continue to help each other in our paths to success. We cannot wait to see how this graduating class will change the world!

IDEATHON The 2019 Modo Labs Ideathon was hosted by the Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship and the Innovation Hub. Students from across campus spent a weekend full of fun and innovation taking their ideas and building them into an app, with no coding skills necessary to do so! Students worked alongside their peers to create solutions to challenges that arise on FSU’s campus. The 1st place winner was Noledge, winning $2,000 and going on to compete against other universities in the nation for a national prize of $10,000. The national prize will be announced at the Kurogo Conference at MIT in June 2019. The primary purpose for the app they developed is to allow students and faculty to share skills that are required in the real world but are not necessarily taught inside the classroom.

InnoVenture Weekend was a fun and challenging two-day team-building innovation and business pitch competition.

Students from all majors applied and were put into groups ranging from 3-5 students.

The theme of the weekend was Natural Disasters, which had students coming up with ideas ranging from pet safety to helping disabled populations. The 1st place winner was Fanny Pet: A “backpack” specifically designed for dogs that contains everything needed for several days in an emergency such as flooding, home damage, or sudden evacuation. They won $300.

The Jim Moran School celebrated its growth on campus. Most of the JMS faculty members have moved into a 12,000-square-foot space in the renovated Shaw Building near Strozier Library.

The facility is equipped with a fabric-printing lab for retail entrepreneurship, as well as a body-scanning lab that uses lasers to measure 68 locations on the body. That level of precision allows designers to tailor garments in various ways to achieve any kind of look.

his past January the FSU Retail and Innovation

Center hosted the annual Retail Summit held in the Olgsby Union Ballroom. The networking event started with keynote speaker Reesa Lake, proud FSU alumna.

She spoke about her professional journey and shared with the students a timeline of her successes and failures. Students then had the chance to network with various retailers and used the opportunity to ask questions and collect advice. The Retail Summit is a wonderful way for students to interact with retailers and company executives while practicing their professional skills. We are grateful to all the businesses that gave our students wonderful advice and thank them for helping make this event happen.

The 2019 InNOLEvation® Challenge included eight teams of student-entrepreneurs. The competition included all of the work students have done on their business models since the start of the 2018 fall semester.

The Retail Center’s Annual Scholarship Dinner is such a Each year, select Retail Entrepreneurship students are given the opportunity to attend the National Retail Foundation's (NRF) annual Student Program in New York City. This year's 2019 group saw two days packed with educational sessions, networking opportunities, career fairs, store tours, and many more events. The NRF's annual Student Program is the only one of its kind designed specifically for college students. This event provides opportunities for them to hear from CEOs and senior executives, create mentorships with industry leaders, gain access to the latest in retail technology, and network with recruiters representing global brands from across the country.

fantastic and unique experience that I have really enjoyed attending both this year and last. This year’s speaker, Carley Ochs, was incredible and truly inspired me as she recounted her journey of starting Bourbon and Bowties.

She explained to us what it was really like to start a business in today’s retail world, and how it was both hard work and extremely satisfying. Getting to network with forty retailers representing twenty companies was also very insightful, helping me in preparing to apply for internships and even helping to jumpstart some of the application processes! Over $30,000 in scholarship money was awarded, I was also extremely honored to be among the thirty five students chosen to receive a scholarship and could not be more thankful for this invaluable experience.

The first Wednesday of every month the 1MC program offers 1-2 local entrepreneurs an opportunity to present their startups to a diverse audience of mentors, advisors, and entrepreneurs. This event takes place in the Jim Moran Building in Downtown Tallahassee.

JMS HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER CAMP The Jim Moran School is hosting its 2nd annual Entrepreneurship Summer Camp where high school juniors and seniors will attend camp for 1 week, June 10-14, from 10am to 4pm. The students will learn what it means to be a successful entrepreneur and the foundations of starting their own business.

THE JMS CHALLENGE Each year, the Jim Moran School welcomes a new class into each entrepreneurship program. The cohort representatives will organize this event and it will take place the 1st or 2nd week of classes. This event will have Olympic-style games and allow students an opportunity to get to know each other.

ALUMNI WEEKEND During Florida State University's Homecoming Weekend, come back to Tallahassee to hang with your alma mater! The Jim Moran School will host happy hour the Friday before the game, then on Saturday tailgate with us before heading down to Doak Campbell Stadium where the Noles will take on Syracuse. There will be a chance to win free tickets!
