Christopher Beane

Christopher Beane is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and has a background in portrait and figurative photography. After stumbling into a job in New York City’s bright and offbeat flower district, Beane became obsessed with the botanical.

Beginning with traditional abstract and black and white compositions in the 1990s, Beane has since produced diverse bodies of work that explore the beauty and decay of flowers.

Beane’s color work is creative and evocative in a manner unlike what one typically finds in the sensual photography of pistils, stamens and petals. He has photographed a remarkable variety of species in creative ways, shooting flowers on top of nail polish paintings or murano glass. In 1998, Beane began to photograph individual ranunculi against a black background with a 4 x 5” analog sinar camera. He continued to photograph ranunculi, a genus of about 600 species in the ranunculaceae family, every year they were in season until 2010, amassing hundreds of portraits.

His work has been shown at the Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, PA, the Museum der Moderne, Salzburg, Austria, and the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris, France. A monograph of the artist’s work was publihsed in 2008, entitled “Beane Flower”.

The artist lives and works in New York City.

JIM KEMPNER FINE ART Jim Kempner Fine Art specializes in contemporary paintings, sculpture, photography, and works on paper, with a special emphasis on contemporary master prints and outdoor sculpture. Dru Arstark has been the gallery director since 1998 and Sarah Bielicky has been the associate director since 2011. Jim Kempner has published prints by Rinaldo Frattolillo, Charlie Hewitt, Robert Indiana, Paula Scher, Bernar Venet, in addition to Gianfranco Gorgoni’s photographs of Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty. Other publications include Ligorano/Reese’s Line Up portfolio, Untitled 2001 silkscreen, and the DEMOCRACY lightbox, made in collaboration with gallery director Dru Arstark, under the name Madness of Art Editions. Additionally, he has published his first editioned print, Apocryphal Now, in 2014.
