Christine’s Personal and Coaching Origins We all go through our own unique trials and make agreements with ourselves in order to survive them. Christine grew up in a home with three sexual abusers (all have since passed away). She learned to live in silence and to disconnect from her core self. Positive childhood memories were made quietly, while playing with a younger sister, staying late to read at the library, and participating in sports and Junior Achievement (a high school entrepreneurship program).

After graduating from college, Christine worked in business development until she took some time off to raise her daughters. She had made a commitment to stay home with them and be engaged in their schools and activities, with the intention of offering extra protection for them until they were old enough to protect themselves. She returned to the business development field in 2008, and in 2009 made the transition to nonprofit fund development work.

Christine says: “I have undergone a great deal of deep personal healing, and during some of my life and career transitions, I hired a coach. I found coaching to be so powerful for accelerating change that I wanted to learn the magic for myself! In 2015, I studied coaching and started my coaching business. It has been so rewarding to do work each day that matters to me and also helps others. “ She adds that we live in extraordinary times, and nobody knows when their time will come. She says that whether she lives 60 more days or 60 more years, she will be deeply grateful to be able to keep living her dream.

Christine encourages those considering working with a coach, “Let the buyer beware!”

Look out for a rash of people who used to work in other industries that were impacted by shutdowns and furloughs, and those who have enjoyed working from home, to decide to try coaching. It is a career that can easily be accomplished remotely. Many may think they can swing it. Some will follow an ethical path. It is a discipline that requires coaching skills and best practices, experience and insights. If you want a coach, don’t settle for just anyone who throws their name up on a website. Check to see what the coach has done, what organizations they are sanctioned by and what ethics drive those organizations. Look at the coach’s experience. See what the clients they worked with have to say. Do your due diligence.”

Christine also says it is essential to look at coach-specific training (e.g. an ICF-accredited program like Coach U and Corporate Coach U where she got her training) and their specialty. Find out what types of assessments they are certified to deliver (e.g. the Fearless Organization Psychological Safety Scan, or the Taylor Protocols Core Values Index, which Christine uses with her clients).

Before you make any decision, Christine recommends you interview at least three coaches and confirm their credibility. And she reminds people that any coach who has an agenda for your life is not the right coach for you. You set your own agenda.

Christine says that nothing brings her more satisfaction than seeing people pursue excellence and accomplishing what they never could before. Helping them gain perspective and get un-stuck is one reason she believes coaching is so essential.

Christine observes that social isolation increases the risk for stress, negative thinking, new tensions at home, and even risks to those who experience violence in the home.

When people are sheltering at home, Christine suggests using a coach’s mindset to explore creative solutions. “If you cannot get to the gym, find a way to exercise at home and be sure to take good care of yourself. If you are a social creature, use a video-conferencing tool like Zoom or Skype to connect with others. Listen to a virtual concert, and dance or dine with friends from afar.”

“And don’t forget to read,” she says. “I’d love it if everyone at home right now got a copy of Life Beyond #MeToo” and we all emerged from sheltering in place as people who are committed to a safer world for women and girls.”

Because of negative experiences, humans learn from a fairly young age to focus on the negative for self protection. A coach can help you with adopting a new, positive mindset. Coaches offer tools to help clients positively face unexpected change. They also know that the power of choice can direct our future.

Top Tips for Surviving the Unexpected •

Focus on improving yourself and the lives of others.

Learn what resilience is and how to build it. Focus on that moment between a stimulus and your response. I embrace the work of Dr. Madelyn Blair, who has written and lectured on this subject.

Set up a structure to succeed. We thrive on structure. Identify internal and external structure in your life. Choose routines that make you feel good, starting with making your bed every day.

•

Eat healthy. It nourishes the mind, body and spirit. Cooking can be a Zen-like activity too.

•

Connect to your greater power, the Divine, and your source of spiritual guidance.

•

Do your hair and take care of your appearance. Does the image in the mirror make you smile?

•

Keep a work schedule that works for you. Set healthy limits. This can be harder when you are working from home.

•

Make time for exercise and meditation. These will help you cope with a New Normal and establish clarity and purpose for the future.

•

Always choose your actions and believe in the power of choice. You can strip everything from a person except her last human freedom (according to Victor Frankel, noted psychologist and Holocaust survivor), to choose an attitude or mindset that is strong and triumphs in adversity.

Many of these tips are good for evaluating and nurturing the self in times of change. But what about your business? Will you need to reassess your value promise and what you can deliver to clients?

Does your business model make sense as demand shifts to accommodate changes? Do you have to change your work schedule to meet needs?

The restaurant was one of the first to offer home delivery of many popular chef creations. They also created a drive-up coffee and pastries bar at the restaurant site. In the Summer of 2018, a new spark came to Christine, to write a book.

Christine and a colleague had been discussing the remarkable longevity of the #MeToo Movement and Christine felt compelled to write about how coaching can help change the culture.

The colleague replied: “Yes, you have to write a book! What’s the title?”

EP Magazine 09 Christine replied, “What’s Next?” She was determined that the book would not only feature stories from survivors, but how to apply what she knows as a coach to #MeToo-- to create personal awareness for individuals and leaders (which is a precursor to personal or organizational change).

During research and as she was writing, she realized a need to bridge the “gap” some would say exists between her work coaching business leaders to run excellent companies, and her passion for a world that is more equitable and safer for women.

“My a-ha moment, “ Christine says, “came when I realized there truly is no gap between the vision of creating a safer, equitable world and the goal of growing healthy organizations.”

The book title eventually became Life Beyond #MeToo: Creating a Safer World for Our Mothers, Daughters, Sisters & Friends. Its stories and insights help the readers take action to bring positive change to life. The book is another tool in the toolbox for leaders of organizations wanting to accelerate excellence and sustainability, as well as increase team psychological safety (Read more on psychological safety later.)

“#MeToo was a transformational moment in history. People have been eager to learn more and talk about bringing America, and the world, to a new and better cultural place for our women.” Christine says.

The #MeToo statistics sure are startling. A mere 24 hours after actress Alyssa Milano tweeted with that hashtag it was added to and commented on all around the world.

There were 12 million posts on Facebook alone. Social media proved that women were not alone, and have tolerated more than enough harassment, acts of violence or discrimination based on their sexuality.

Christine’s book brings new understanding to these topics. She relates women’s stories. She offers guidance on how to understand their suffering and bring healing and transformation. She helps us all understand terms that are difficult to grasp and recognize when a situation is just uncomfortable or truly illegal. One guideline she offers for those who read the book sprang from her daughter’s love of the TV show Law and Order SVU. “What would Olivia Benson do?” Just read it.

It is interesting to note here that the Joyful Heart Foundation: www.joyfulheartfoundation.org, which is a charity run by Mariska Hargitay who portrays Olivia Benson, will be receiving a portion of profits from the launch of Christine’s book. Their organization is oriented to bringing closure to victims of rape and sexual violence, whether that comes from solving unfinished cases, or providing links to counseling and healing. It aims to help women once again live with joy in their lives.

EP Magazine 10 Christine’s book was well-researched and offers the view of a safer, more vibrant future. Each chapter begins with a survivor’s backstory, told anonymously, and ends with discussion points.

As a coach Christine offers these for self-reflection and meditation, as well as group use, whether at schools, in workplaces or other organizations, and for encouraging readers to contribute to a positive New Normal. This is one reason why it earned such praise from experts in business, women’s studies, and transformational coaching.

Christine reminds readers that while the book will be helpful to victims it is not strictly for them, because sexual violence is not limited by race, age, gender or social status. From college campuses to workplaces and social groups the book will engage anyone in listening, thinking, and understanding.

While she offers a trigger warning to those who have been victims of gender-based discrimination and violence, Christine put great effort into gathering these stories (with the help of an eminently qualified research assistant) and to telling them in a way that would engage readers instead of being emotionally draining.

If you’ve been in a bubble, it may be hard to believe there is an Old Normal, or to see any need for changes.

If you live up-close and personal to, or in the carnage of Old Normal, it’s hard to believe there is hope for a better future. If you’ve lived in a bubble, you might think we’re almost or already there. Perspective is everything.

Hope for New Normal I dream of a world at peace, where all humans are honored. I dream of a world where no child is disposable and all children are wanted, even before they were purposefully conceived. A world where all children are equally valued and have equal opportunity to grow healthy, productive lives of contribution to community.

I dream of a world where all children play and learn and grow fearlessly in safety.

I dream of a world where all children are loved, nourished, and have equal access to and engagement in quality education. I dream of a world where all are able to contribute and be rewarded justly in the marketplace and out of it. I dream of a world where unpaid work is shared by all joyfully, and there are none who are disadvantaged by carrying a heavier burden of unpaid work.

I dream of a world where sexuality is viewed as a beautiful, miraculous gift, where people voluntarily come together for intimacy, unity, and procreation. I dream of a world where nobody is used. Where consent is always ascertained and agreed upon, and there is never a doubt about whether sexual expression is desired. I dream of a world where gender discrimination and harassment do not exist. Where people are interested in caring for and honoring other humans with their thoughts, words, and actions. I dream of a world where there is no gender discrimination, no objectification (or resulting selfobjectification), no such thing as sexual abuse, sexual assault, or attempted sexual assault.

I dream of a world where leaders live and teach and help their communities to live and teach deep respect and honor among all members of community. A world where none are excluded for any reason, and all are seen for the miracles that we are.
