Resilience The Little Keswick School community epitomized resilience during the first half of 2020, and our resolve continues into this new school year. Amid a global pandemic and a heartfelt focus on understanding and improving race relations, resilience easily emerged as the predominant theme of the last six months.

The challenges were numerous as the school made an abrupt shift to a virtual platform for academics, therapies, residential relationships, and social/emotional support. At the same time, we successfully prepared to bring everyone safely back to campus in June. Everyone rose to the occasion. We all made the best of difficult situations while embracing the unmarked paths that eventually brought us back together to a changed campus in a changed world.

Resilience and a lot of consistent, hard work from many dedicated people have forged a new path forward. We are stronger because of it, and we are grateful for those who have partnered with us in our efforts. Our resilience empowers us to continue making a difference.

CHAIRMAN’S LETTER

To the LKS Community, The theme of this year’s annual report is resilience. Never has resilience been more crucial for our school than during this year’s COVID-19 pandemic. Resilience resides not in policies or curriculum but in our people. In these pages you will read amazing stories of students’ triumphs over adversity and the adults who make this special place possible, even when limited to teaching and supporting our students online.

I would like to share some insight into a kind of LKS resilience that many do not see. We all know how indispensable the leadership team has been to the success of LKS over the years and that these individuals are the main architects of our positive and supportive school culture today. Their work is well evident in the strong admissions office they have built and, now, in the success of our fundraising and development initiatives. Thanks to the school’s outstanding fundraising efforts in our first years as a non-profit and to the generous response of LKS friends like you, we have an exciting story to tell–even in a challenging year like this one.

We must also call attention to the excellent financial management of the school. We faced much uncertainty as COVID19 forced the school to close temporarily last spring, but the leadership team worked tirelessly to manage our cash, so we could continue to pay our employees. Keeping together our most important asset—the professionals who make the LKS community possible–was the school’s number one priority. The administration worked with donors to authorize the removal of restrictions on endowment gifts should we need the cash to sustain the school’s operations. They also worked with our bank to secure an additional line of credit and applied for the federal Paycheck Protection Program funding as soon as it came available. Every current family was contacted to discuss the refunding of an appropriate amount of room and board fees since students had to be educated from home for three months in the spring. This was done while simultaneously planning for all the COVID-19 cleaning and distancing precautions needed immediately to protect our staff and then for our students once they returned.

While the school has yet to need any of the additional sources of operating funds, the team’s work gave the Board the confidence it needed to support the reopening of the school as soon as it was possible. Despite the ongoing challenges our school faces, the Board has confidence that Marc Columbus and his leadership team will continue to guide us well through whatever additional COVID-19 related trials might come. We count it a privilege to help families and young boys when they need us most, and we continue to be confident that, with your help, we will be ready to welcome new students for generations to come. Friends of Little Keswick School, On a beautiful spring-like March evening on campus, I worked with our service dog, Mika, on her commands and watched as the boys and staff began their slow stroll toward the Depot and dinner. Even though it had been a long and tiring day, I remember thinking that this is LKS at its best. We were experiencing full enrollment, a stable financial condition, and increasing donor generosity. Exciting plans were underway for our Depot renovation, and we had the beginnings of a new campus master plan.

HEADMASTER’S LETTER

A mere two days later I was watching our last few students climb into the school van for their ride to the airport. By order of the Virginia governor, we had to immediately close the school over COVID-19 concerns across the state. We were suddenly thrown into uncertainty about how the school could weather this pandemic storm, yet our first concern was for our students and staff.

Under Jody Berkey, Assistant Head of School’s leadership, the academic, residential, and clinical teams developed an amazing and effective process to provide not only instruction online but emotional support and even Boy Scout meetings for our students. Even further behind the scenes we were dealing with the financial ramifications. The COVID-19 pandemic brought into focus the financial vulnerabilities of a small school. Having heard about the negative impact on morale at schools where employees were furloughed, we established a priority of keeping our core team together. Talk about a leap of faith! As Tom described in his letter, we tapped every option at our disposal to continue paying staff.

At the same time, we began planning for safely reopening. We met with epidemiologists and developed best practice plans for cleaning and social distancing in our classrooms as well as in dorms and during meals and leisure settings. Our plans were so thorough, they have now been used by other schools as a model.

I have learned much in 2020, not least of which is how to manage the “new normal.” We teach the boys to find the positive in every situation, and I had to remind myself many times to follow my own advice. We are confident now that even if we had to close again temporarily, we could continue our excellent instruction.

It may be a cliché, but I think I am a better Head of School now, and I think our school is very clear about what must be protected at all costs: our community and our culture that changes lives. We all dug deep and discovered the resilience that keeps LKS thriving, even in the face of unprecedented challenges.

STAFF PROFILE JENNIFER BAILEY, LCSW

Jennifer joined the LKS community in 2015 having served in a similar role at the Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School in Chicago, Illinois. Jennifer worked for over six years at the Orthogenic School, a nationally recognized residential school and treatment program at the University of Chicago. During her time at the Orthogenic School she provided students and their families with individual, group and family therapy. Jennifer implemented several new programs while at the school, forming a creative writing group and leading exercise and personal health seminars. She was responsible for supervising interns, dormitory counselors and providing weekly supervision of the clinical team.

Jennifer is the driving force on our clinical team for group therapy and parent training elements, and she has been instrumental in establishing our family-life and social-justice initiatives. She is tirelessly innovative in making our complex theory-based approach understandable and accessible to our community.

“One of the components that I value most about Little Keswick School is the sense of community,” Jennifer says. “Our community helps students feel a part of something larger than themselves.

They learn that being a part of a community can have such a positive impact on them. They learn that they have the power to positively influence their community, building skills in theory of mind, perspective taking and empathy for others.”

Jennifer completed her master’s degree in clinical social work from the University of Chicago and obtained a bachelor’s degree in psychology from The Ohio State University. While there she also minored in theater, graduating with distinction in theater. Her infectious personality, warm heart, and talent for drama-based interventions helps our young men and their families realize potential that was previously hidden or obscured. Her love for and commitment to Little Keswick School is obvious as she gives her time so generously to the community.

She has a depth of experience that we highly value here at LKS. 7

STORIES OF RESILIENCE

THE MAGIC OF LKS Somehow, this wasn’t in the parenting books.

Six years ago, we found ourselves in an impossible situation. Our creative, curious, and active little boy had become a 13-year-old who could not read or even remain in a classroom, who had no hobbies other than looking for things on the ground, who had no friends, and who made up wild stories to get attention.

We spent our days trying to put together combinations of school and support services and our evenings trying to manage Ben’s anger and frustrations. Each school year started with promise but ended with an even longer list of learning challenges and diagnoses.

Although we lived abroad, we made the difficult choice to put Ben in a boarding school in the US, and an educational consultant helped us find Little Keswick.

That first phone call with LKS was such a relief. As I spoke with Terry Columbus and explained our situation and the challenges Ben faced, she said, “He sounds just like one of our boys.” From that moment, he was.

It is hard to put the magic of Little Keswick into words.

The people, the communication, the consistency, the individualized planning, the passionate and professional academic team, the skilled support and residential staff, the attention to detail, the campus, the pen-turning, the fishing, the horses, the camaraderie, the chickens—all of these were amazing and exemplary in themselves. Yet,

at every turn I kept hearing the question, “How can we make this successful for Ben?” I realized that through celebrating and building on small successes our son was learning that he could find his place.

Ben entered LKS as a school escapee who spent his first day on campus looking at the rocks on the pathways. He left as a student and an engaged classroom participant.

He gained hobbies, coping skills, and friends—and he learned to read. Each step along the way slowly restored his self-confidence.

Ben’s journey is not over, nor is ours. He moved to another program in 2019 where he both completed his high school diploma and held down a part-time job.

He has recently moved back to Sweden to continue his education in a specialized program at a local school. We are confident that his arsenal of tools, coping strategies, and conflict resolution skills have given him a foundation upon which to build the remainder of his life.

We were so fortunate to find Little Keswick and are grateful for the magic the school worked on our son and our family. We hope that Little Keswick can continue to offer its magic to other boys and to other families who find themselves in a similar situation. FINDING HIS TRUE, BEST SELF Eric, Barbara and Jake Elowitz, 2019 Baruch College graduation, NY

Our son Jake spent three transformative years at Little Keswick School from age 11-14. He came there as an unhappy, argumentative little boy who wanted very much to have friends. He left LKS three years later as a happy, confident, and socially well-adjusted young man with many friends and with a bright, successful future ahead.

We always thought he was a diamond in the rough whose true brilliance was masked by his maladaptive and confrontational behavior. LKS polished him by providing a structured environment with continuous feedback that enabled him to learn interpersonal skills and boundaries. He developed socially, emotionally, intellectually, and athletically. Almost paradoxically, this discipline and structure were the keys to Jake’s finding his true, best self and the freedom to become what he is today.

Little Keswick School is like no other place on earth.

The degree of methodical planning, staff development, and physical resources required to make LKS successful is mind-boggling. It takes a unique vision to have so many various elements of the school work together successfully. Translating this vision into a reality requires significant financial resources, well beyond the tuition.

The pandemic has stretched the resources of all institutions and businesses. While many schools are not opening this year, LKS has boldly faced the challenge and done the seemingly impossible. After a short hiatus, they are back to providing their unique brand of education in a safe and nurturing environment, just as always. Through their creative thinking and extensive planning, they have been able to institute the needed distancing and implement the proper sanitary and hygienic precautions. Through additional investment in their staff training and infrastructure, they have been able keep the boys safe and back to learning, socializing, and having fun without significant interruption.

We have always believed LKS is a very special place.

Their response to the current challenges and their ability to adapt to and overcome these unparalleled obstacles only reinforce that belief.

We feel immense gratitude for how LKS shaped our son. Although Jake transitioned from Little Keswick School a decade ago, continuing to financially support the school remains a priority for us. EMBRACING A CULTURE OF CARE DURING A PANDEMIC

Today more than ever we are focused on fostering a sense of security, care, and belonging for our students and their families. Here are a few of our strategies for maintaining a safe environment that continues encouraging our students to thrive: HYGIENE AND PREVENTION • All staff and students have participated in trainings and updates on important behaviors and skills including social distancing, hand hygiene, and mask wearing. We celebrate students who work hard to maintain good mask wearing with a weekly Mask Master recognition.

• Outdoor handwashing stations have been installed around campus along with signs and visual cues to remind everyone about best practices.

• Students participate in wellness screenings twice a day. Staff members participate in screenings upon arrival to work, in addition to the daily wellness and activity screening they complete via the LiveSafe app.

New enrollees are carefully screened and required to quarantine prior to joining our community.

• We have increased the size of our housekeeping staff and the frequency with which they clean, as well as adapting new cleaning protocols.

ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES • Each student has been provided a Chromebook for schoolwork, reducing the amount of equipment shared across students.

• Every student and teacher desk has been outfitted with Plexiglas partitions. New outdoor learning spaces have been created.

• We have implemented a new visitation policy so that our parents are partners in keeping everyone safe.

PREPAREDNESS • We have hired additional staff in both the academic and residential settings and retained professionals who can step in to support our clinical team in case any of them falls ill.

• We have been stockpiling personal protective equipment and diversifying our supply chain so that we can meet the needs of our community without interruption.

These are just a few of the dozens of changes we have made to our daily routine, which are proving to be workable and sustainable. Students and staff are working together to make everyone safe. We know this is a long commitment, but we are in it together.

MEGAN DANIEL

MARGARET SHEPHERD TEACHER OF THE YEAR AWARD Megan Daniel has been honored with the Margaret Shepherd Teacher of the Year Award from the Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Education Facilities (VAISEF). The award annually recognizes an excellent teacher who works with students with special needs and is employed by one of VAISEF’s more than 75 member schools.

Megan has been teaching at LKS since 2017 and is known by all as a passionate educator whose excitement about teaching and learning is contagious. She has established herself as a leader among her peers and has spearheaded multiple initiatives to continue to grow our academic program.

Among her many accomplishments, Megan proposed a school-wide reading initiative and was awarded $5,000 in grant money to purchase books and materials to support literacy in our program.

This initiative has ignited a love for reading in our student body. Formerly reluctant and struggling readers are now experiencing success in reading.

Megan also has a leading role in our school’s growing therapeutic drama program, which allows students to tell their stories, set goals, solve problems, and express their feelings.

In the classroom, Megan creates a culture that promotes kindness, respect, gratitude, and

vulnerability. She motivates her students by telling them what they are doing well and reflecting how she sees them as smart and capable individuals every day. Students respond well to her efforts: “She has pushed me to do my best by offering support,” said Henry. “She gives me challenges that fit my skill level, as well as being supportive and caring.” Will said, “She helps inspire me to find what I like and to move forward.”

Megan uses cooperative learning in small groups, where each member of the team is responsible not only for learning what is taught but also for helping teammates learn, thus creating an atmosphere of shared achievement. “Megan teaches academic and social skills directly, breaking them down into component skills and providing scaffolding to support student learning,” said Jennifer Payne, Director of Academic Services. “She challenges students to overcome learned helplessness and think for themselves by asking effective questions that lead them to understanding.”

“Megan sets her students up for success in school and life by teaching them to be independent learners with strategies to manage academic, independent living, and vocational challenges,” Jennifer said. “She definitely deserves this recognition.”

GABRIEL HIRSCH POETRY AND ART AWARD The Gabriel Hirsch poetry and art projects are highly anticipated annual events at Little Keswick School. This year’s theme was “Our Stories,” reflecting the theme chosen for the academic year. The 2019-2020 school year turned each of our stories – each of our lives – upside down. Our story as a school had to be rewritten, and students were not able to convene on campus for the typical art and poetry instruction last spring. Our individual stories, though, persisted as threads that could still be woven together as we connected virtually. Staff, students, and families continued building identity through relationships, shared experience, and reflection. Despite the upheaval, we were able to weave the singular stories of individuals into our community tapestry. The Gabriel Hirsch Poetry Award was able to recognize the power of a single artistic perspective to reach into the hearts of those both near and far away.

Gabriel Hirsch, like many students who attend Little Keswick School, worked to learn how to communicate the feelings he experienced. He embraced the power of the written word and artistic expression as vessels through which to share himself with the community and, eventually, the world. Through this award and grant, students have the opportunity to find and use their unique voices, express themselves through the poetry and art they create, and have further opportunities to learn about, experience, and develop their own love of poetry and art. Gabriel’s legacy continues to impact Little Keswick School students.

Due to the limitations presented by remote learning, there was no community art project this year. We were able to provide virtual instruction in reading and writing poetry, however, and students were invited to write and submit original works for the annual poetry contest. Despite this year’s unique conditions of poetry instruction, writing, and workshopping, over a dozen original poems were submitted.

Aryan earned an honorable mention for his poem, “Where I’m From.” The winning poem for 2019-2020 was “The Spice of Life,” by Brett. Jimmy Green, Brett’s teacher, read his poem during our live-streamed transition ceremony on June 12 in front of a socially distanced live audience of staff who were on campus. Every year, the audience applauds after the winning poem is read. This year, however, the audience was moved to remain silent as it processed both the emotions Brett communicated and the emotions his poem evoked in them. This powerful moment served as a fitting capstone for a remarkable year.

SCHOLARSHIP FEATURE: GETTING THE BEST SHOT AT LIFE How could our family ever fit our immeasurable gratitude into words?

The generosity of The JoAnn McKellar Scholarship you awarded our son Daniel has radically changed our family’s trajectory. The scholarship has made it possible for our son to remain at LKS where he is finally truly understood and is getting topnotch professional help with his complex challenges. LKS is transforming not only Daniel but our entire family.

In the weeks Daniel was home for the COVID-19 quarantine, we were in awe at how far he had come since beginning his journey at LKS in January 2019. We would like to share just a few examples of skills he has gained and the successes he is having to assure you the scholarship was a worthy investment.

• Before LKS, Daniel could not handle free time and being bored and would escalate if we couldn’t go somewhere and do something. While at home for quarantine he filled his time productively playing an instrument, helping his grandma in her yard, working with his dad, playing basketball, etc.

• Before LKS, Daniel had no confidence in or tolerance for academic work. While working with Virtual LKS, he worked mostly independently and shared with pride when he got three out of four questions right on Newsela and 10 out of 10 Power Words. He has looked at math worksheets and said, “This is easy,” or “I know how to do this,” and quickly made corrections when he made errors.

There are so many more examples we could give of the ways Daniel is now able to use the skills and tools he has learned, take initiative, work independently, make corrections quickly, collaborate with others, and so much more. If you could see a video of our family a year ago compared to a video of us now, you would know without a doubt that the LKS program and culture work.

Our son who was struggling emotionally, socially, and academically is now confident and growing in all of those areas. He frequently tells us, “I have skills now. I can handle it.” Thank you for giving Daniel the opportunity to have the best shot at life he could possibly get. Thank you for a bright future for our son and family. We will remain forever grateful.

WITH APPRECIATION: THE FITZPATRICK FAMILY

The amazing generosity of LKS parents Neil and Gaillee Fitzpatrick is leaving a legacy of support for our students that will continue to be enjoyed and deeply appreciated for years to come. In last year’s annual report, we announced the Fitzpatricks’ major gift pledge to fund the renovation of our historic Depot building. The renamed Fitzpatrick Family Depot is the gathering place where relationships are nurtured, important weekly Community Meetings are held, and visitors are greeted. Many of the most important moments at LKS happen in The Depot.

The new JoAnn McKellar Scholarship, which the Fitzpatricks established in memory of Gaillee’s late mother, is already being awarded to deserving students. You can read in this report about the impact of the scholarship, as shared by the grateful parents of the first recipient.

Because they are so passionate about the LKS mission and want to contribute to our sustainability, Neil and Gaillee expressed concern when the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to close last spring. They understood the dire financial situation we faced. Their response was to send a substantial—and much-needed—unrestricted gift toward operating expenses, along with an early Depot installment and permission also to redirect it toward operations if needed.

The Board crafted this following resolution to express our deep appreciation.

PLANNED GIVING COMMITMENT

My son, Gabriel Hirsch, was a student at Little Keswick School between the ages of 12 and 15. At age 22 Gabriel sadly and unexpectedly died from a medical complication. After recovering some semblance of equanimity, I began to think about a way to honor him—something he would have liked and that would also be comforting to me.

and innocent vulnerability. I am reminded of my son and all the opportunities that had lain before him.

Although sad, I feel so proud of Gabriel and what he accomplished in his brief time on earth. And I’m proud to have given something back to the school, however modest in financial terms, that enriches the lives of other students.

As the arc of his life distilled in my mind, I realized that Little Keswick School probably had the biggest impact on his short life. As a student there, he came to understand his challenges and to recognize his gifts, to discover himself through self-expression, and to learn (most importantly) how to make and be a good friend.

Last year I decided to leave a bequest in my will for Little Keswick School to continue the poetry and art award and to be used more broadly by the school for arts education. I have no idea how much money will be left in my estate when I die. If I live a long life, LKS will be out of luck! But my experience creating the program in honor of my son made me realize that the size of the bequest was less important than the commitment to the school.

In 2013 with the help of Marc and Terry Columbus and with special assistance from Dr. Marty Thomson, who had worked so closely with Gabriel as his therapist, we created the annual Gabriel Hirsch Art and Poetry Award. When it started, I had no idea how meaningful the program would become for me.

Every year when I attend the transition ceremony at the school, I am reminded of the amazing community there. I see the boys who are leaving the school and see their touching combination of well-earned pride

I believe the LKS administration agrees with me that recognition and sustained support for the remarkable work of the school is a significant way to honor our children, both during their lifetimes and after, and it is a deeply meaningful act for us as parents and friends of the school.
