If you’re reading this, you know we survived the February bull sale run! Holy cow, what a whirlwind it has Jill Hotchkiss been. We always have to brace ourselves and get ready for long miles, less sleep and looking at lots of great cattle. In the meantime, we have production on our newspaper plus videoing and video sales for The Livestock Link. We had 31 sales in 28 days in the month of February and that’s only for Hereford America. The Livestock Link had 21 video sales in February. Marc and I made it to many of these sales and now we get ready for March with just 17 sales for Hereford America. It’s a lot of work and a lot of miles but also a lot of fun and we appreciate our advertisers and customers a great deal. I think Hereford cattle are looking better than ever at the sales we’ve attended. The performance ﬁgures and EPDs continue to improve. Availability of videos and online sales continue to change the face of production sales across the country. It’s an exciting time to be in the Hereford business and I think when the drought eases oﬀ, we’ll really be in the driver’s seat. Even with the current conditions, most sales were quite good. Last fall, Marc and I received word that we were to receive a very nice honor in February. We were the recipients of the Black Hills Stock Show AgriBusiness of the Year for The Livestock Link. father, Henry Bischoff who moved up from Nebraska and purchased the original 360 acres of Ravine Creek Ranch in 1906. Over the years, the ranch has grown to over 2500 acres, including those original 360 acres that corn, soybeans, hay and high-quality registered Hereford cattle. Family and cattle are essential to the Bischoffs. Multiple generations of their family have worked the ranch in east-central South Dakota and made numerous appearances in the show ring. This legacy continues as the fifth generation is becoming more involved in the cattle business. From production to marketing, Ravine Creek Ranch is a family business.

traits, and breed standards. Janelle also comes from a farming and ranching background in the Chamberlain, SD area. Both are still very involved with all activities on the ranch and have been leaders in the Hereford breed and cattle industry. Sons, Garret and Matt Bischoff work on the family ranch, helping make cattle and cropping decisions. In addition to farming about 1,200 acres of corn and soybeans, the Bischoffs do some custom planting and harvesting for neighbors. Matt also sells Pioneer seed and works through the Bauman Agency in Huron, where his wife is also a crop insurance agent. Garret founded L4L Sheep Company to raise, show, and sell high-quality crossbred club lambs. L4L, Love 4 Lisa, was named after their beloved aunt Lisa Johnson who was passionate about showing livestock. L4L Sheep Company offers multiple online sales throughout the year and has exceptional show stock.

Ravine Creek Ranch is located north of Huron, SD. They were a popular tour stop last fall on the South Dakota Hereford Tour.

Daughter Lori Peskey, her husband, Mike, and their kids live nearby on Peskey Farms. They sell bulls from their own registered Hereford herd at the family’s sale. Peskey Farms also has a large commercial Angus herd that supplies most of the F1 baldies sold yearly in the production sale. Lori serves on the board of the South Dakota Hereford (continued on page 4)

(continued from page 1) Association, having served the past year as President. Jerry and Janelle’s youngest daughter Abby Bischoﬀ is a professional photographer and Director of Stockyards Ag Experience in Sioux

Falls. She does most of the marketing for the ranch, including the sale catalog and ads. Matt, Lori, Garret, and Abby have all shown cattle in the South Dakota Junior Hereford Association and attended the Junior National Hereford Expositions. In 1998, Lori and Abby

had the Grand and Reserve Champion Females at the South Dakota State Fair. The pair also were competitive in the speaking contests at Junior National and served at South Dakota Hereford Queens. All of their kids were active on the South Dakota Junior Hereford Association board of directors helping plan state events and culminating with planning the Junior National show in 2002. Association and industry involvement have also been very important to both Jerry and Janelle. Both served as junior advisors for the South Dakota Junior Hereford Association from 1993-to 2004. In addition, Jerry held

three terms on the board of directors for the South Dakota Hereford Association Board, even as the organization’s president. Janelle has served as the parliamentarian for the National Hereford Women’s Board and editor of the newsletter. The Bischoﬀs still promote the breed when they can, being a part of the South Dakota Hereford Tours and welcoming guests to their ranch. The family’s continued involvement in the industry is what the Bischoﬀs are most proud of as they watch their grandchildren follow family tradition. Additionally, they have enjoyed meeting people from across the country, watching the Hereford breed become a popular

breeding tool, and seeing breeders have success with the cattle they have produced. The ranch has been expanding for several years, but the focus has remained the same: striving to improve their cattle and produce the “complete package.” They emphasize improving carcass traits, creating fault-free cattle, and producing a well-rounded bull to enhance customers’ progeny. Unfortunately, genetic defects have surfaced in the Hereford breed in the last few years. However, genetic testing has been an extremely valuable management tool. Ravine Creek utilizes DNA testing to detect and cull any possible carriers

of the genetic issues, so their herd has endured. With sons Matt and Garret and father Jerry working as a team, the ranch has increased and improved their artificial insemination (AI) and embryo transfer programs. As a result, the family has grown their Hereford numbers and the number of black cows used as embryo transfer recipients. Embryo transfer allows the ranch to use genetics from their superior females to get multiple calves a year. In addition, improving their breeding program has allowed the ranch to use the best possible genetics and produce exceptional progeny for their sales. successful production sale in 2022. Through EPD selection, DNA testing, and visual appraisals, the family selects the best of their Hereford genetics for their program. Approximately 50 head of registered yearling and two-year-old bulls, 15-20 registered heifers, 20-25 commercial Hereford heifers, and black baldy replacement heifers will be selling this year. Jerry said, “We try to reach out and use bulls that we think will move our program in the right direction. We try to offer new genetics every year. I really enjoy meeting customers and learning more about them and their needs.” It is rewarding to the Bischoffs to see their cattle go into other herds, make advancements, and help improve their bottom line. By offering new genetics every year, the ranch is able to do just that for its customers. Their online heifer and embryo sale in October is another way they share their exceptional genetics. Using AI and embryo transfer, the ranch has been able to offer even more genetic variation to the public. The Bischoff’s first online heifer sale was in 2020 to offer elite show heifers, embryos, and herd bull semen. Beyond the success of their production sales, they have experienced wins in the show ring. Recent wins in the show

ring include Reserve Champion Heifer and Grand Champion Bull at the South Dakota State Fair. Additionally, the ranch has been working toward nationally showcasing its genetics. They had a very successful 2020 & 2022 National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO, exhibiting the Reserve Champion Pen of spring bull calves both years. With grandkids in the show ring now, the family is excited to see the ﬁfth generation show in 4-H and at the Junior National Hereford Expo. Connecting with other breeders at shows, making lifelong friends, has made an impact on Jerry and Janelle. One of their favorite aspects of attending shows and events is visiting with friends from all over the country that they may only get to see once a year. Maintaining the ranch’s legacy will fall to future generations despite the strong family history. Both Jerry and Janelle hope their family will remain passionate and pass it on to their

grandchildren. Jerry stated, “Strong family support, a family that helps and is interested and wants to do the same thing,” is crucial to maintaining a family operation. There will be challenges that arise in the industry as it is everchanging. “We have to furnish cattle that will work for today’s cattlemen. If we don’t provide it, others will,” exclaimed Jerry. This commitment to the future of

Mel’s six sons, numerous grandkids and a riderless horse. It is said the riderless horse is “reserved for the funeral processions of extraordinary individuals — high ranking military oﬃcials, presidents, secretary of defense, and cowboys.” The outpouring of love and sympathy for the family left behind deﬁnitely portrays that Melvin H. Roghair was an extraordinary cowboy. Using all the modern tools to raise common sense cattle

There were several loves in the life of Melvin Roghair of Okaton, SD, namely God, his wife, his family and Hereford cattle. His aﬀair with the white‐faced, red, gentle breed began at a very young age and lasted until his death on December 6, 2021 at the age of 84. He married Clarice Caldwell of Wendte, SD on November 19, 1966. She brought one horse and 10 cows to the marriage, Herefords, of course. MH and CJ Roghair Herefords came into being not long after that and soon the Roghairs were lifetime members of the American Hereford Association. Mel and Clarice worked hard to make their herd the best, buying good bulls from South Dakota breeders such as Wilmar Wuertzer, Leddy, Hovland and Reinhold as well as the most expensive purchase, “Nugget” (he was pricey) from Montana ranchers Courtney. About that time, the “bottom went out” of the Hereford market, poisoned grazing from knotweed and a shortage of good water nearly destroyed the Roghair herd, but only challenged MH and CJ to carry on the struggle. As age claimed strength and hope for Mel and Clarice, the Hereford herd dwindled to a few head no one bothered to register, and it was assimilated into the herd of oldest son, Marty. However, the reverse RC brand marked the handmade casket at Mel’s funeral on December 27th. The casket was carried on a wagon pulled by youngest son Lonnie’s team across Mel’s beloved “Creek Pasture” north of Okaton. Richard Allen “Dick” Carlson, 79, of Murdock, MN, died Saturday, February 12th at St. Cloud Hospital. Dick was born December 20, 1942, in Hayes Township, Swift County, Minnesota, the son of Reynold and Juliette (Gronseth) Carlson. He grew up on the farm and graduated from Kerkhoven High School in 1960. Following high school, he continued to farm with his father. (continued on page 8)

George died at his home north of Torrington, WY, on February 13, 2022. Memorials may be given to the Wyoming Junior Hereford Association, the Prairie Center Fire Department or the Mennonite School. George LaVerne Ochsner was born May 12, 1933, to Godfrey and Esther Ochsner. He was born in his original homestead house 20 miles north of Torrington. George’s education consisted of attending several country schools in the Burge community. George was married 64 years to the woman he adored, Ruby Arnold Ochsner. They set a great example of Christian love and marriage for many. Their union brought four children: Tena (Elden) Baldwin, Rodney (Deb) Ochsner, Dixie (Steve) Roth, and Blake (Chrissy) Ochsner. The love of ranching was instilled in all four children. George was blessed with eight grandchildren: Erin (Jeff) Hinton, Jason (Shannon) Baldwin, Jeremy (Angela) Ochsner, Vanessa (Chris) Crisman, Sarena (Cody) Assmann, Rustin (Britte) Roth, Katie (Devin) Martin and B.W. (Terra) Ochsner. He adored his 14 great-grandchildren and was looking forward to welcoming two more this summer. George was blessed to still have his three siblings: Jack Ochsner, Delores Hatch, and Marge Smith. George will be remembered as a (continued on page 10)

George was involved with many ag-related organizations and church. George’s great insight, love of life, love of family and

Jackie Buckley Named NDSU Saddle and Sirloin Club Agriculturalist of the Year By Emily Beal AgWeek FARGO, N.D. — From Little International princess to agriculturalist of the year, Jackie Buckley had a fullcircle moment at this year’s 96th Little International that was held on North Dakota State University’s campus in mid-February. Buckley has spent her entire life in North Dakota’s agricultural industry. Growing up on her family’s farm (Fisher Herefords) she was immersed

in the industry at a young age. Her family’s operation encompassed registered Hereford cattle and small grains. Being the oldest of five girls, she took on additional responsibilities on the farm. “Being the oldest of five daughters, I was my dad’s hired man on the farm,” Buckley said. “I was raking hay, hauling bales, running the combine, driving the truck or whatever other duties needed to be completed.” During her youth, Buckley was an active 4-H member, being a part of the organization for 10 years. She showed Hereford cattle at her county fair as well as the North Dakota State Fair. She has fond memories of her time within the organization. Following high school graduation, Buckley enrolled at North Dakota State University, where she majored in animal science and minored in food nutrition and agriculture communication. She graduated from the institution in 1979. During her time at NDSU she was a member of the Saddle and Sirloin Club, where she held several officer positions. She also showed animals in the Little International and was even a Little International princess, where she advocated for North Dakota agriculture. She also received the club’s

outstanding senior award. After her college graduation, Buckley went back home to the farm. “I went home for the summer, not really knowing what I was going to do. I saw an ad in the paper for an assistant county agent,” Buckley said. While she did not get that initial position, Buckley eventually did get hired as an assistant county agent, which started an illustrious career in NDSU Extension that would span 37 years. Buckley greatly enjoyed her years in Extension, but was not always met with open arms, especially in the early years of her career. “In 1979, it wasn’t the time for a woman to be applying for a maleorientated career. So it was a hard pull convincing people that I could do the job. It produced some challenges, but it ended up being a great career as an Extension agent,” Buckley said. “In the beginning I caught a lot of grief from producers and the other ag agents thinking I could not do the job.” The bulk of Buckley’s work in Extension took place in Morton County, where she worked for 26 years. Her dedication to the community and agriculture industry during her career made her an obvious choice for the

Little International’s agriculturalist of the year. “Agriculture more times than not, it’s pretty quiet. There’s a lot of people in the background that are doing so much for the ag industry, North Dakota ag and North Dakota youth especially that a lot of people don’t get recognition for it. I think giving the opportunity to give back to them for what they have done for us is a really big deal,” said Hope Willson, the 96th Little In-

with a chilly morning but warmed up throughout the day. Seventeen cattle producers exhibited 25 pens of bulls and heifers. Also on display were two pens of quarter horses and a pen with mules. Eleven commercial exhibits were present and featured among the cattle pens. All the exhibits were downtown on the Main Street. Attendees were treated to seeing the animals up close and many other activities were held as well including a quilt show, 5KRun/Walk, 4‐H Luck of the Draw, dummy roping and wine tasting. Later in the afternoon a forum was held at the Valentine Livestock Auction. Three candidates for Nebraska governor and two candidates for the Nebraska state Board of Education attended. A nice sized crowd of voters turned out. Following that was a Cowboy Church Service and it was very well attended by locals. The day capped oﬀ with a concert at the Valentine High School Auditorium by Becky Schlegel and the Traveling Opry Show. This event was co‐sponsored by the Valentine Arts Council. Committee chairman, Shane Keller commented “The weather was nice enough to make it enjoyable for numerous people to be out and take it all in. The cattle industry was well represented on Main Street and viewed by many. The many events were well attended and good reports on sales from businesses.” Story & Photos by Linda Teahon

Fort Worth Stock Show Hereford Champions

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The stakes were high as judge Harlan Yochum, Sapulpa, OK, sorted the 38-head National Hereford bull show and 102-head Hereford female show at the Fort Worth Stock Show in Fort Worth, TX. “This champion drive is a perfect example of the different types and kinds that you need to sell bulls,” said judge Harlan Yochum. “I really commend your breed for raising and breeding cattle that are functional, sound and correct.” Each year the Texas Hereford and Texas Polled Hereford Association’s honor two families who have made an impact on the breed and this year the horned show honoree was Muleshoe Ranch, Breckenridge, TX, and the polled show honoree was Donlie McMullin, Copperas Cove, TX.

ago and I went down to the area south of Casa Grande and this brought back some old memories about people who fight and defend our country. As a young man in my teens, I attended the University of Montana. During orientation time I ran into a young freshman man and we became immediate friends while visiting. He was a big guy about 6 feet 3 inches tall and he weighed about 225 pounds, a solid muscled guy with a big grin, but you knew he was all business. At freshman orientation we got talking about where we came from, what we had done and what our goals were for college. He told me that he was one of the first students in the new US Forest Service group that was being organized to jump (parachute) fire fighters into the mountains in the Northwest to fight and contain fires, this was a new program for the Forest Service and up until this time all of the fire fighters had to hike to the fires and in many cases it was a long hike, taking a long period of time, and sometimes they would lose control of the fire before the fire fighters could get to it. It was interesting to me to have this conversation with my new friend because I had been recruited in high school for the same job and I was very interested in doing it, but my Dad vetoed the idea saying I was needed to work on the ranch in the summers not go off to fight fires. From now on in this story I will refer to my friend as “Scar” because, for security reasons, I don’t want to use his real name. During our time at the University of Montana, Scar would be gone from school for extended periods of time, when he would come back to school, of course, we would ask where he had been (continued on page 22)

Shortly thereafter I learned from Tiger’s family that he had accepted a flying job but there were no other details available. The operation would be something secret because Scar wouldn’t tell me too much about it. About a year after, I got another call from Scar and he wondered if I would be interested in going in with him to buy Johnson Flying Service. Scar said, “You know the operation, I know the operation very well, and the air carrier certificate is one of the big things that we need in our business for it to work, and I need somebody like you to go in with me to buy it, what do you think?” I was in somewhat of a shock because I had never thought of trying to buy into Johnson Flying Service and I had no idea I would ever be involved in such a big operation. I told Scar that I would have to look into it and see if it were possible to raise that kind of money. Scar told me that the money was available and that would not be of concern. I also told Scar that I would talk to him later and would he call me back within about a week and we will talk a little more about it then. Going through my mind was just what is Scar into, and what is he working on, because knowing Johnson Flying Service would be good and could be an international operation, and with all the things that Scar wouldn’t tell me about the last few years, I had to believe that this was a covert operation he was into. I would have to do some talking to my wife about this involvement. Pauline and I decided that the amount of money involved, even though available, would be a far reach for us at the time, even though with my interest in flying it was certainly very interesting, but it was really very, very interesting to me to hear again from Scar and to wonder what he was headed for and what we might find out later. After due consideration, I had to decline the offer..... To be continued in the April/May issue.
