parents are both gone and we miss them terribly. We had some epic trips along the way, usually to bull sales and to a couple of World Here ford conferences, one in Colorado and one in Canada. The most fun trips, of course, were when several of us would travel together and on several occasions travel with one or two breeders who went along. There was always a lot of laughter and camaraderie on these trips and some incredible discussions about cattle, including some history lessons. Our normal bull sale trips are always interesting. OCTOBER 10, 2021 One thing is for sure, each one is diff erent from the NOON AT NEXT GENERATION GENETICS W7874 STATE ROAD 23, ENDEAVOR, WI 53930 next and every year they are diff erent too. Again, I am so fortunate to see the friends we have made over the years SELLING PICK OF THE NEXT GEN BRED HEIFERS Elite Hereford and Angus females Elite Hereford and Angus femalesand see some of the best cattle in the world. We met some wonderful people at the World Hereford Conferences as well. In addition, I’ve been able to incorporate some Hereford visits in with vacations to Ireland and Scotland where we met terrifi c people with great herds of Herefords. These were lifetime highlights for me. Marc and I continue MGM COW POWER BRED TO VANGUARD Select open heifers and steers Select open heifers and steerson with the publication and our vision to continue promoting Hereford cattle.
I want to thank Robin Engel and Taylor Vroman who have worked for us almost all the years we have been STEVE JANN & MATT MERRY 414-881-5274 STEVEN.MERRY@AURORA.ORG in business.
Robin is a fantas- MGMPOLLEDHEREFORDS.COM tic, talented graphic designer who has been with us for 20 years. She previously worked for the Bismarck Tribune, Farm and Ranch Guide and others. She continues to work for us as well as doing other freelance design work.
Taylor Vroman has been with us for about 21 years and brings a host of talents to the table including proofreading, website development, catalog development and countless other behind-the scenes jobs that keep us in line. He also works with our video company, The Livestock Link as does Robin. My mother-in-law June has been a proofreader for us for a number of years and does a great job. I will not tell you her age but you know she is older than I am. We have had a number of writers over the years. Of course, the best and most missed are the editorials by my Dad. We will continue to run his vintage articles from time to time. I still get requests for them. Many thanks to the free-lancers who have helped us over the years. I intend to keep things interesting and do some diff erent things as we go forward in the coming years as both the cattle industry and publishing industry continue to change. We have incorporated social media with the help of Megan Dukart and Halle Walsh along with my own contributions. Our websites are a constant work in progress as well. Marc and I are still going strong and attending as many sales and events as we can. Each year we travel thousands and thousands of miles as do many people in the publication business. Herefords and Hereford people are the best around and we enjoy this part of the business, tremendously. It is a privilege working with all of you and seeing the progress you make with your herds. Thank you to all of our advertisers, readers and loyal supporters. Here’s to many more years of promoting Herefords both in print and digitally. And thank you to Lynn and Rick Terry of Whitehall, MT for letting us use the photo of their cattle on the front page for a number of years. Lynn was also dad’s right hand man for many years and helped him with things around the ranch plus helped him type his editorials. Several years ago, we formed The Livestock Link, which is a livestock video company. This is separate from Hereford America and I call it our sister company because Marc and I are owners in the company. The two businesses overlap to some degree. Most of our customers are either cattle (any breed) or horses. The company provides video services, video sales, online bidding and sale clerking for the sales we are working. This has been an interesting venture and we are constantly updating and using new technology to provide these services. Through the 25+ years we’ve been doing Hereford America, it is always diffi cult when one of the Hereford breeders we’ve been working with for a number of years decides to sell out. Of course we’ve attended a few of these over the years. It’s never easy to watch a sale like that but they are usually memorable for one reason or another. This year the Iron Lake Ranch in Texas had a total cowherd dispersion in late April. I’ve gotten to know Dimitri and Marina Mataragas, owners of Iron Lake, and it was diffi cult seeing them sell their beautiful herd. They might not have been in the Hereford business as long as some breeders but what they accomplished in 17 years was impressive and they developed a true passion for Herefords. They have retained ownership in a few donor cows owned with other breeders so while their pace will be much slower, we are sure to see them around at a few events. Congratulations Dimitri and Marina on a job well done and best wishes for your semi-retirement. In closing, my prayers are for all of you enduring the drought that is plaguing not only the United States but many areas around the world. May you receive rain soon and relief from the hot weather. Keep faith in God that he will provide. — JBH
