My Bull Buyer Wears Lipstick and Other Random February Thoughts I’ ve been think ing about this title for a long time. E ach year as I am Jill Hotchkiss entrusted by people to bid on bulls for them, I also run into a few who don’ t want to “ deal with a girl.” That’ s ok ay. I’ m used to it by now and the ones who are comfortable work ing with me far outweigh those who don’ t. For the most part it is very enj oyable and I’ ve gotten to k now some great people with whom I’ ve had interesting conversations about cattle and other subj ects over the years. Most people lik e my candidness when assessing cattle but I suppose there are some who want to only hear how perfect the bull is. We always hope they are perfect and I’ d love to say each one is perfect but it j ust doesn’ t happen that way. A friend with more wisdom than I have once told me, “ j ust remember, there is no such thing as a perfect bull,” and it bears k eeping that in mind. I’ d rather mention the few imperfections so there aren’ t any surprises when a person receives his/ her bull or heifer. S o to those people who work with me and value my opinion, I say thank you. I am honored and it is a pleasure work ing with you. This past month has seemed lik e a year due primarily to over two plus week s of sub-z ero temperatures which have blank eted a large portion of the country during which we’ ve had a very full bull sale schedule. Many registered breeders started calving during this difficult weather and it’s just made life miserable all the way around for a lot of people. Hats off to all of you who have weathered the storms. Ranch life, no matter, what you are doing at this time of year, just becomes pretty difficult with weather like we’ve had in February. The big snow storms south of us in Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee and other states, turned life on its head for thousands and the situation complicated itself with rolling blackouts, power and water outages. In visiting with Dimitri Mataragas of Iron Lake Ranch in Athens, Texas, he said the situation was not good but they finally got power back on. Simple things like eating, having heat and water for people, water for cattle and being able to start your pickup come to a halt when you live in Texas and get South Dakota weather. We in the northern states are used to that kind of weather, and being pre-

from billing customers or disconnecting them for nonpayment. This was shortly after residents started to receive incredibly high power bills following the cold snap. I can’t imagine what kind of bills ranchers will get if city people were getting huge bills. Hereford sales have been going incredibly well throughout the region with several breeders commanding prices over $80,000 as of this writing. This is our bull sale coverage issue so as you read through the reports and see photos, you’ll see just how well people have done. Again congratulations to all of you who have survived February weather and had great sales on top of it! It’s shaping up to be another year for the books. — JBH

National Hereford Sale Results daughter bred to BG LCC 11B Perfecto
OKLAHOMA CITY — The display carousels were abuzz and a large crowd watched eagerly as the Hereford Night National Hereford Sale topped off activities on Saturday night, Jan. 9, at the 2021 Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City. After the final strike of his gavel, auctioneer Joe Goggins sold 36.08 lots averaging $17,385. The sale featured 10.08 bull lots averaging $29,489, 10 female lots averaging $9,425, seven bred females averaging $15,036 and nine pick lots bringing in a $14,611 average. Topping the sale was Lot 16 consigned by Bar Star Cattle, Musselshell, MT, with Bar Star Fresh Prince 018 ET from the Reserve Champion Junior Bull Calf Pen-of-Three. This popular lot commanded a bid of $107,500 and sold to Ye Ole McDonald Farm, Grand Rapids, MI. Thirty-three buyers claimed 33 semen packages. Buck Cattle Co., Madill, OK, consigned Lot 29 with BK BH Fast Ball F102 ET. The CRR 719 Catapult 109 son sold for $54,000 to Chapman Ranches LLC, Mannsville, Okla. In addition, 14 buyers claimed 14 semen packages for a total of $14,000. Nelson Hirsche Purebreds, Del Bonita, AB, consigned Lot X with a B&C Stock Option 6026D ET son, GH SO Blockbuster ET 170H. One-third interest was sold to Alberta’s Dallas Farms, Stihl Farms and Johnson Farms for $50,000. Lot 12 — an NJW Long Haul 36E ET
84F — was consigned by Next Generation Genetics, Endeavor, WI. This female went to MGM Polled Herefords, Hartford, WI, for $30,000. Consignors Atkins Herefords, Tea, SD, and JDH Herefords, Lake Benton, MN, brought the top-selling open female to the sale ring. Selling as Lot 2, this daughter of H Montgomery 7437 ET went to Hoffman Herefords, Thedford, NE; Upstream Ranch, Taylor, NE; and Harrison Livestock, Montague, CA, for $28,000. Hoffman Herefords, Thedford, NE, received a $30,000 bid for its Lot 6 Pick-ofFall Heifer Calves. Jamie Moore, Piasa, IL, took home this pick. After the final bids were tallied, 36.08 lots brought $627,250 to double last year’s gross sales. The American Here ford Association thanks Sam Eck and W-W Manufacturing, Thomas, OK, for supplying the sale ring, and the Cattlemen’s Congress crew for setting a great sale arena and their second-to-none hospitality. “A big thank-you goes out to the consignors for bringing an elite set of Here ford cattle and genetics to the national Hereford Night sale in OKC,” says Joe Rickabaugh, AHA director of field management and seedstock marketing. “This sale sets a pace in the Hereford breed and the credit goes to the consignors year in and year out. We greatly appreciate the buyers and all the sale attendees who continue to support this event.”

V alarie B urgamy Mead, 46 , passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, December 8th, 2 02 0, in Midville, G A . S he was born in Milledgeville and was the daughter of Tom B urgamy and the late C onnie B ailey B urga-
my. S he was a resident of B urk e C ounty. S he went to E dmund B urk e A cademy, graduating in 19 9 2 as salutatorian. A fter graduation, she went to G eorgia S tate C ollege & U niversity to pursue a degree in B iology followed with a second degree in C hemistry. S he was a member of the A merican Hereford A ssociation, the Midville G arden C lub, and the treasurer of the V idette U nited Methodist C hurch. V alarie work ed at S tar C hoices in Macon for four years, where her caregiving nature excelled.
L ater becoming a stay at home mom, she decided that selling J uice P lus might be fun. A lready a health enthusiast, she q uick ly became a top seller and devoted customer. Was an integral part of Mead C attle and enj oyed a new venture at McG raw Furniture. S he had a great love for gardening owers, k nown well by all as a complete ray of sunshine. A loving mother to four children, family was always V alarie’ s number one priority. S he could always see the good in everything and truly graced the lives of everyone she met. S he was a faithful C hristian who read three devotionals every day, without a
doubt, she is getting her devotionals in person today. Dorothy Herman, age 82 , passed away peacefully in her home in L eola, S D, on S unday, J anuary 17 , 2 02 1. Dorothy A nn C rompton was born May 3 1, 19 3 8, at B rentford, S D, to L .T. and G race ( L aB ay) C rompton Waltman. A s a small child, she grew up on the rompton homestead five miles west of Wetonk a. When she was about 8 years old, the family moved two miles north of Wetonk a where she attended grade school. S he graduated from Westport High S chool in 19 5 6 , where she was very active in school activities and was an honor roll student. In the 19 9 0s, she assisted her mother in compiling a family history and recipe book where Dorothy was referred to as “ P a’ s L ittle Helper.” Dorothy always lik ed to go along with her dad and when she was old enough to drive, she work ed in the field with him. She had many fond memories of her life at Wetonk a. Following graduation, she was employed at the McP herson C ounty E xtension office in Leola. On May , 1 , she married Gerald Hoffman and they made their home on the Hoffman ranch west of L eola. G erald and Dorothy raised 3 children while expanding their registered Hereford business that took them to many states and foreign countries. Most family vacations included a Hereford sale or ranch visit to view cattle and meet and mak e new friends. Dorothy was a crucial part of the ranching business with her meticulous book k eeping sk ills and involvement in the A merican Hereford and S outh Dak ota Hereford A ssociations. S he was also active with the C ircle L C attlewomen group in L eola for many years. S he enj oyed gardening, sewing, and preparing meals for hungry hired hands and special guests. For fun, she and G erald could be found sq uare dancing! A fter the death of her husband in 2 004, she took on a supportive role in the ranch management and transitioned (continued on page 3 0 )

A fter a few years, she moved to L eola where she became active with the S enior C itiz en group and enj oyed entertaining guests and grandchildren. O n O ctober 13 , 2 012 , she married Fred Herman J r. and together they enj oyed each other’ s company while attending church, shopping and social events. L ook ing forward to “ whose birthday is next” and getting together at the farm for “ birthday parties” with plenty of cak e and ice cream was always a good time. Dorothy had an unwavering C hristian faith that was the cornerstone of her life as she spent many hours daily reading her B ible and praying. S he taught S unday school and 7 th grade confirmation for many years at St. J ames L utheran in L eola. S he loved to study the B ible, tak e sermon notes and wrote many of her own B ible stud-
ies. Her church family, whether at S t. J ames, P raise Family Fellowship, or Freedom C hurch, was something she held dear to her heart. D ouglas P atrick L awrence Douglas P atrick L awrence, 7 8, of oon Rapids, M passed away peacefully on Wednesday, J anuary 2 0, 2 02 1, at the A RK on the River in Anoka, M . He was born O ctober 5 , 19 42 at S t. Mary’ s Hospital in Minneapolis to Ralph and Irene L awrence. Douglas was infant baptiz ed and confirmed in the Methodist hurch and was B orn A gain and baptiz ed as an adult at Fridley A ssemblies of G od C hurch. A s a youth he was an active B oy S cout and achieved the O rder of the the A rrow as well as a 4-H member. He graduated from A nok a High S chool in 19 6 1 but spent the maj ority of his young life attending school in C olumbia Heights. Following his schooling he work ed at Independent P ack ing and for Rock et O il, entering the Minnesota ational Guard in1 and served for six years. A fter completing basic training Douglas purchased Rock et O il C ompany from his father in 19 6 4 and started Rock et Turf L andscaping in 19 6 7 , growing K entuck y B lue G rass S od in A nok a C ounty. Douglas and J oA nn were married in 1 in illmar, M and settled in C oon Rapids where they operated their businesses until he retired in O ctober of 2 02 0. Douglas was an active supporter of the Republican P arty and served as P resident of the Minnesota Turf A ssociation and current P resident of the A nok a C ounty Farm B ureau. Douglas had many interests including home building, land development and raising Hereford cattle. His enj oyment of raising Hereford cattle gained many close friendships across the country and he has been honored many times for his support of the J unior Hereford A ssociation both in Minnesota and nationally. He received the A merican J unior Hereford A ssociation A dvisor of the Y ear A ward in 19 9 5 , A merican Hereford A ssociation 5 0 Y ear G olden Hereford B reeder A ward 2 009 , Minnesota Farm Family of the Y ear 2 010 and was inducted into the Minnesota Hereford B reeders 2 02 0 Hall of Fame. He was preceded in death by his father Ralph E . L awrence, mother Irene
E . L awrence, and sister-in-law K athy L awrence. He is survived by his wife of 5 1 years J oA nn ( K rueger) children B ryan ( Marytina) , B radley ( B rigitte) and ason iebrock and six grandchildren, Montana Leyton, fiance , Wyatt ( C laire) , Wade, Wynn, Dawson and Hutton, twin B rother Dennis and elder brother Richard ( S andra) many nieces and nephews.
Grady Sparks While we will grieve with family and friends over his passing, we would lik e to raise a Halleluj ah that Grady olan S park s is now home with the L ord and is excited to have all of us j oin him when our time on planet earth is done. “ Three.” That was Grady olan. He did not wait for O ne, Two. He was always ready to tak e on the next challenge. He started out in life a brick layer, got his degree in B uilding C onstruction at A uburn U niversity ( one of the last things he said was War E agle) and q uick ly became a contractor/ developer/ cattleman. He loved to travel and see and explore new land. He could look at a piece of property and q uick ly envision how it could best be used for farming, hunting, development, or as a sanctuary. Truly insightful and creative, a visionary, he even took western art classes in Taos, M. His interests ranged from coaching little league football to raising/ training B ird Dogs for Field Trials to piloting A merican Tugs in A lask an/ C anadian waterways to recording gospel music. He obtained his multi engine pilots license and ew for business and pleasure. He raised champion Reining Horses, C utting Horses, and P leasure horses. He loved Hereford cattle. His introduction to Herefords began in the 19 6 0s and maintained and developed one of the finest Hereford cattle herds in the nation. He would play bridge or tennis or pick leball with eq ual drive and determination. In fact, he travelled the country competing in maj or B ridge C hampionships, was a highly rank ed southern section tennis player for over 2 0 years, and won back to back U S O pen P ick leball C hampionships rising to in the world rankings. Grady olan often told us that he still holds the Walk er C ounty record for the mile run having run it in minutes at in 1 . S ince high school track competitions switched to the metric system not long after that, this may be true. Our point is this. Grady olan did not “ dabble” in anything. He took on every new interest with the goal in mind of being the best he could be. He had a strong will, fierce determination and k new how to mak e things happen! He did this by meeting and listening (continued on page 3 9 )

This was not work for him. It was love. And love is what he showed all family, friends, and strangers alike. He knew the love of Jesus and shared it with all
he encountered either through counsel or song. We were at his bedside wondering why he was handling his failing health so much better than us. Grady Nolan was like the bricklayer before him, Nehemiah, who encouraged all around him by reminding them that “the joy of the Lord is my strength”. Hallelujah to the precious name of Jesus Christ for blessing us with Grady Nolan Sparks! Amen!

Walter J. Walsh
Walter J. Walsh, 98, of DeGraff, MN, died Saturday, January, 30th at Gabriel House in Murdock. Walter Joseph Walsh was born June 5, 1922, to Henry and Mary (Foley) Walsh in Murdock, MN. He grew up on the family farm where he started helping with chores at an early age. Walter attended country school near Murdock. Following his schooling, Walt enlisted in the US Army where he honorably served for two years during WWII. After his honorable discharge he moved back to the farm where he continued working with his dad. On November 27, 1948, Walter was united in marriage to Catherine McCann. Walter and Catherine raised their family and worked together on the farm for 42 years. Walter was a
hard-working, Christian man who enjoyed farming his entire life. He could be described as “a great man of few words and a lot of work.” He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was proud to know that three grandchildren carried out his legacy of farming and ranching. He was a loving husband, dad and grandpa. Walter is survived by his children: Charles (Kendra) Walsh, Thomas (Lisa) Walsh, Mary Kay (Mark) Frederickson and Louise Waterman; grandchildren: Nate (Jayna) Frederickson, Sarah (Shawn) Frederickson Tatman, Dustin (Bobbi) Walsh, Ben (Catie) Waterman, Katie (Nick) Waterman Lambert, Jackson Walsh, Halle Walsh and Mia Walsh; great-grandchildren: Teegan and Tiernan Frederickson, Peyton and Trygve Tatman, Olivia, Addy, Ella and Emmy Walsh, Ethan Waterman, Madi and Brooke Lambert; sister, Monica Osterbauer; and sisters-inlaw: Mary Walsh and Albie Walsh; and

Recipient Cow Selection and Management Breeding season is approaching rapidly for spring-calving herds. If embryo transfer (ET) is a part of your operation, selection and management of your recipient cows is a critical aspect of your success that shouldn’t be overlooked. Most recommendations for recip cow selection suggest using 3- to 8-year-old cows with a good calving record. Cows with calves at side with no history of calving problems are good candidates for the recip herd. First-calf heifers are still trying to grow, make milk, and breed back so it may be a good choice to wait to include them in your recip group. Heifers can make good recipients provided that they’ve reached 65-70% of their mature body weight and are cycling; however, one must be cognizant of birth weight EPDs and realize that heifers will produce less milk than cows once the ET calf is on the ground. Recips who gain body condition reasonably quickly after calving and those with a calm temperament will probably be more successful in your program. It’s beyond the scope of this article to include any discussion of recip set up and synchronization protocols; you will want to lean on your ET practitioner for advice in this area. While reproductive technologies and synchronization protocols continue to advance and improve, there is no replacement for good management, whether we’re talking about recips, donors, or the general cow herd. A solid nutrition program with vitamin and mineral supplementation is key. Get nutrient analyses completed each year on your feed ingredients and use them to balance a ration that is cost-effective but will allow the cows to meet your expectations for their performance in the recip pen. Similar analyses on water sources to determine sulfates, nitrates, and other dissolved solids is also recommended. Based on feed and water mineral content, obtain a mineral mix that will provide adequate macrominerals and trace minerals. While most minerals are necessary for optimal reproductive function, copper, manganese, and zinc are three critical
trace minerals that can have a profound impact on reproductive success. Depending on your location and soil type, selenium may be another trace mineral that could be lacking and should be included in your mineral mix. Inclusion of vitamins A, D, and E in your mineral mix is also a good strategy. Keeping your recip herd on a similar plane of nutrition both before and after transfer is recommended to avoid any changes in the uterine environment that could result from an abrupt switch in diet. Should a transition to a different type of feed or pasture be necessary, a gradual transition over a period of a few weeks is preferable to an immediate one. Consult with your ET practitioner and veterinarian to make sure that your vaccination protocols and timing are appropriate to protect animals from disease but will not negatively interfere with the ET process. Minimizing stress as much as possible around the time of transfer is good insurance. Keep the same group together to reduce fighting and pecking order squabbles. Avoid moving or hauling cattle if you can. If you do need to
transport them, most recommendations suggest doing so the first two days after transfer. Finally, communicate early and often with your 54 • www.herefordamerica.com
