Editorial Comments... Jill Bayers Hotchkiss It sure has been a long, old winter in most of the United States this year! In our neck of the woods in northwestern South Jill Hotchkiss Dakota we have what seems to be more days below zero than normal and plenty of snow but not record amounts like some years. I know many of you have us beat on both accounts, but regardless, it makes it tough on man and beast. Most registered breeders in our area calved during this time. My hat is off to all of you who tended to your livestock and brought new calves and lambs into the world. Commercial breeders in our area calve later than registered breeders and I hope the weather straightens out by then. As I write this there is a good foot and a half of snow on the ground which, come spring, will make for some wonderful green grass and pastures. Our Hereford America and The Livestock Link crews have traveled in some brutal weather and icy roads this season making days difficult. Each year it is interesting to see what kind of pattern the production sales will take. So far this year, bull sales have been fairly good, some exceptionally good. A few others had an odd roller coaster pattern with high prices at the beginning of each pen. I think those sales were affected by not having enough commercial buyers who wanted more than a couple bulls.That always makes a big difference. Matt and Richard Schulte (95) bought several bulls at the Bar JZ Sale near Holabird, SD. Each year at the Black Hills Stock Show in Rapid City the Reinhold family honors a special Hereford family. This year’s re­ cipients were Nancy and Buster Peterson from Kadoka, SD.They are long-time Here­ ford breeders and supporters of the BHSS Hereford sale. The painting is of Buckshot, a special horse who for 30 years was used on the ranch and Rainbow Bible Ranch. He worked for every level of rider. The painting, by Bob York (right) is based on a photo by Robin Reinhold. Larry Rein­ hold (left) made the presentation.
