The Pitirre is the symbol of ASPIRA. A small tropical bird found in Puerto Rico, the pitirre is known for its agility, rapid flight and for its ability to outsmart, tire and defeat much larger birds. ASPIRA believes that the pitirre is a fitting symbol for LAAA. ASPIRANTES gain the confidence of the pitirre by acquiring knowledge and developing their leadership skills. They can face and overcome seemingly overwhelming odds to become productive adults, returning to their communities with the benefits of their skills and leadership abilities. The symbol of the pitirre reinforces ASPIRA’s belief that even the smallest and seemingly powerless can take control of their lives and cause change.

Our Goal
ASPIRA East Campus
Our campus is growing! With the help of our families, friends, and community, we plan to raise $6,000,000 over the next two years. These funds will be used to purchase and renovate our new campus to support a diverse learning community focused on communication, compassion, culture and college readiness.
Our History 2009 2011 Initial charter approved by DDOE
ASPIRA opens the 1st dual language immersion charter school in DE (303 students; grade K-5)
2014
ASPIRA receives charter renewal and Ruthar Drive becomes its permanent home (541 students; grade K-8)
ASPIRA West Campus
2018
Final renovations completed at Ruthar Drive (785 students; grade K-8)
2019
ASPIRA receives charter renewal and approval to expand to high school (946 students; grade K-8)
2020
ASPIRA high school opens with 9th grade at West Newark Campus
(1,060 students; grade K-9)
Architect’s Drawing of Future ASPIRA High School. Upon completion, the school will include: 14 Classrooms, 2 Science Labs, Visual and Performing Arts Rooms, Gymnasium/Cafeteria, Media Center, Administrative Offices and Lobby/Reception area. In addition, the campus will include athletic fields.
This first phase consisted of a 24,500 sq. ft. renovation to an existing industrial building. These images show completion of a lobby, lab and classroom.

Path to Biliteracy Our dual language immersion program supports both native Spanish speakers and native English speakers to become bilingual, bicultural and biliterate. Communication at LAAA means building proficiency in two languages to become biliterate. It further aids in the ability to navigate effectively in all modes of communication helping to build successful, vital community members.
Wolves That Learn and Grow LAAA was recognized and received the highest level of award for their W.O.L.V.E.S Reading Program in 2020.

WHAT MAKES OUR ASPIRANTES UNIQUE? Paving the way to biliteracy:
They earn four language credits (Spanish or Chinese) versus the typical two.
They receive science instruction in Spanish within the immersion program.
Preparing for college and career:
They earn 28.5 credits, as compared to the state requirement of 24 credits, which will provide them a stronger foundation.
They have the option of five pathways, which represent the greatest need for bilingual skills in the labor market.
Giving back to the community
They complete 20 community service hours in addition to participation in an annual Day of Service and activities to support the community.
They are required to complete a Capstone Project in their senior year that focuses on a global issue within their pathway to which they will conduct research and investigation.
Rising above
They are required to take two Advanced Placement(AP) courses.
They have the opportunity to earn college credits in dual enrollment courses.
