ausanne is the smallest of the four large Swiss cities and is easily reached from anywhere. It is close to numerous top tourist destinations, such as Montreux with its casino and the Chillon Castle, Zermatt and its Matterhorn, the Jungfrau, Lucerne, the historic city of Gruyères, the Glacier 3000 and the Vaud Alps and the French resort of Evian. In a natural setting said by some to be the loveliest scenery in the world, Lausanne, with its 131,000 inhabitants (300,000 in
the greater urban area), is a city that lives in the country. Tucked into the shores of Lake Geneva, a beautiful lake at its feet, the French and Swiss Alps in its surrounding, meadows and forest to the north, vineyards to the east and west. Lausanne was awarded the title of Olympic Capital in 1994: since 1915, it has been home to the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and of leading institutions connected to the Olympic Movement, and to those of some forty international sport federations and organisations, factors also earning it the title of global sport administration capital endowed with a “Maison du sport international” (MSI). In addition, some 300 societies and clubs use Lausanne as a base for their activities, proving it to be an ideal place for sport every day, from lake-based water sports to the networks of walking, mountain biking and Nordic skiing trails in the forests above the city. Lausanne has enjoyed a first-class reputation for medical care for three centuries, ever since a certain Dr Tissot looked after patients who came here from far and wide. The tradition has flourished, insofar as the city is home to the University Hospital Centre (CHUV), several private hospitals, offering on-call services and check-ups.
