THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS... SEMESTER 2 DIGITAL STUDIO INSTRUCTORS || DAGMAR REINHARDT

THE SYDNEY FESTIVAL CREATES AN ATMOSPHERE OF CELEBRATION AND INCLUSIVENESS OF THE CITY EVERY JANUARY IN SYDNEY. THE CENTRAL LOCATION OF THE GARDEN PROVIDDS AN OPPROTUNITY, WHERE PEOPLE, MOVEMENTS, AND THE SCENERY CONGLOMERATE AS SPECTACLES AND SPECTATORS AS IT DOES IN A PERFORMANCE. OUR AIM IN DESIGN IS TO RETHINK THE SEPARATION BETWEEN THE VIEWER AND THE PERFORMANCE AND INLUCDE THE AUDIENCE, THE PUBLIC AND THE CITY AS A PART OF SPECTACLE, PART OF THE PERFORMANCE AND THE CARNIVAL. WITHIN THE SITE OF THE FESTIVAL GARDEN, THE MIRRORED FACADE WORKS TO COMBINE ‘THE FAMOUS SPIEGEL TENT’ WITH THE SYDNEY FESTIVAL’S DESIRE FOR AN ACTIVE, ANIMATED AND MODERN FESTIVAL ENVIRONMENT. THE STRUCTURE BECOMES AN INSTRUMENT TO ENLIVEN THE AREA AND THE CITY. THE PLAYFUL REFLECTIONS VISIBLE ROM THE STREET AND HYDE PARK, WOULD INVITE PEOPLE TO INTERACT AS WELL AS CONNECTING THE THEATER TO ITS CITY ENVIRONMENT, THE FRAGMENTATION AND DISTORTION OF THE MIRROR, THEN PLAYS WITH BLURRING THE BOUNDARIES OF REALITY AND FICTION. VIVANTE COMMUNITY CENTER & CHILDCARE SEMESTER 1 SUSTAINABLE STUDIO INSTRUCTORS || PIETRO CHIEFA

LOCATED IN THE HEART OF THE EASTERN RUBURBIA, GRANVILLE SITS AWELL AS DIFFERENT LEVELS OF FAMILIES (I.E. SINGLE MOTHER W CHILDREN, EMPTY NESTERS, RETIREES, ETC). THE PROPOSED SITE, DUCK CREEK SITS IN THE MIDST OF EXISTING PUBLIC PROGRAMS AS TRAIN STATION, TAFE (GOVN’T LOCAL COLLEGE), HIGH SCHOOL, PUBLIC POOL AND LARGE COMMERCIAL CENTERS. WHAT KIND OF PROGRAM AND ARCHITECTURE CAN BE PROVIDED TO SUSTAIN A DYING COUMMNITY AND STEREOTYPED LIFE WITHIN SUBURBIA?

INTERNATIONAL CONTEMPORARY FURNITURE FAIR (ICFF) IS A REPUTABLE ANNUAL EVENT THAT REPRESENTS CURRENT IN DESIGN. ICFF COMMISSIONED PARSONS SCHOOL OF DESIGN TO CONSTRUCT THEIR BAR AND KIOSK AREA FOR THE EXHIBIT ATTENDEES AND SPONSORING MAGAZINE COMPANIES. THE COLLOABORATION WAS AMONGST 13 INVITED ARCHITECTURE/INTERIOR STUDENTS AND LIGHTING DESIGN STUDENTS. MY ROLE IN THIS PROJECT WAS TO CREATE CONCEPT IMAGES AND WORKING OUT THE DESIGN TO INSTALLATION FOR THE BAR. THE ENTIRE PRODUCTION WAS DESIGNED AND MADE BY STUDENTS INVOLVED. BAR: 96 FOOT LONG HALLWAY WITHIN THE JAVITZ CONVENTION CENTER WAS OUR SITE PROPER. 4-INCH WIDE INDUSTRIAL STRAPS WERE USED TO CREATE A VOLUME AND ALSO DUE TO THE FACT THAT NO IMPACT WAS TO BE MADE TO THE EXISTING CONDITION. APART FROM GIVING A VISUAL VOLUME, THE STAPS DOUBLE FUNCTION AS FASTNERS FOR POP-UP FURNITURE PIECES. BEHIND THE STRAPS ALONG THE LONG WALL SITS THE LIGHTING SYSTEM WITH SCREENS TO GIVE AN AMBIANCE TO THE AREA.

COLLABORATIVE CONSUMPTION :: A SPACE SEMESTER 3 URBAN STUDIO INSTRUCTORS || ROSS ANDERSON

“Sharing is to ownership what the ipod is to the eight track, what the solar panel is to the coal mine. Sharing is clean, crisp, urbane, postmodern; owning is dull, selfish, timid, backward.” MARK LEVINE from NY TIMES

THE SITE AT LARGE SITS AMONGST VARIOUS SOCIAL AND EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS AND INFRASTRUCTURES. IT IS SURROUNDED BY TERTIARY EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTES AS UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY, UTS, AND UNIVERISTY OF NOTRE DAME, ALL WHICH INCLUDE OVER APPROXIMATELY 80,500 STUDENTS IN TOTAL WITHIN BOTH INTERNATIONAL AND DOMESTIC STUDENT BODY. THE SITE IS ALSO ONLY 100 METERS AWAY FRO THE CENTRAL STATION, WHICH EMBODIES OVER 600,000 DOMESTIC COMMUTERS AND TRAVELLERS A LIKE, PER MONTH. THESE TWO SPECIFIC INFORMATION ALLOCATES TWO LARGE NUMBER OF GROUPS: STUDENTS AND TRAVLLERS, BOTH DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL. FOR THESE TWO GROUPS, THE ECONOMY OF ACTIVITIES AND REPLACING ACTIVITIES AWAY FROM HOME CAN BE THEIR MAIN FOCUS. THEREFORE I PROPOSE A BUILDING THAT EMBODIES THE FOLLOWING: - A PLACE FOR COLLABORATIVE CONSUMPTION - A CENTER FOR VISITORS THAT PROVIDE INFORMATION, BOOKING STATIONS AND OTHER FACTORS THAT COULD BE INFLUENTIAL TO PEOPLE’S REASON OF STAY IN SYDNEY

HOUSE FOR COLLABORATIVE CONSUMPTION NE VIEW

THERE ARE OVER 600,000 DOMESTIC TRAVELLERS THROUGH THE CENTRAL STATION PER MONTH.

1.2 MILLION FLIGHTS SEATS TRAVEL PER MONTH ROUTES: SYDNEY-BRISBANE-MELBOURNE

GIVEN THE NUMBERS ABOVE, TRAVELLERS THROUGH SYDNEY HAS ENORMOUS POTENTIAL FOR NEW VENTURES AS WELL AS A LARGE DEMAND FOR CITY INFORMATION AND OTHER RELATED ACTIVITIES, FOR THE CITY CURRENTLY DOES NOT PROVIDE ANY CITY GUIDE.
