Dear JIBSers, As a new Dean at JIBS, it is with great pleasure that I greet you in my first Words from the Dean. I started on 15 August and I have since then worked on getting to know the organization. Most recently, I came from Lund University where I worked as Director of a research centre called CIRCLE. I cherish the opportunity to bring my experience from a large traditional university to the young entrepreneurial environment of JIBS. In my first months at JIBS, I have observed the engaged and dedicated faculty that work to ensure our students’ success in their studies and future careers. Internship projects and external lectures are integral parts of many of our programmes and courses. Close contacts between students, teachers and mentors are important parts of the learning process. By meeting companies in their natural environment, such as during JIBS Entrepreneurship Challenge, students acquire skills and insights that help them maneuverer in the world of business.

Just like innovation processes – which is my own field of research – career paths can be unruly in nature. It is difficult to make reliable input-output analyses, and sustainable paths are not necessarily built on instrumental behaviour aiming for optimization. Rather, success comes from utilizing unexpected opportunities that go beyond one’s own capacity. This requires integration of different, complementary, skills and experiences.

Translating these insights from innovation studies to advice for career planning, I would argue in favour of combining efforts devoted to skills acquisition with efforts devoted to building social networks. Work hard and avoid shortcuts, but always be prepared to adapt to new circumstances. Be a good colleague and alert friend. Listen to advice from teachers and professionals, but don’t hesitate to challenge established wisdom. At JIBS, we do our best to educate and raise such engaged professionals. That’s why we work with three guiding principles: international at heart, entrepreneurial in mind, and responsible in action.

As an alumnus at JIBS, you represent Sweden’s first double-accredited business school. We are proud of this achievement; it is proof of our quality and international legitimacy. We hope that you feel the same pride. We are always happy to welcome you back as a guest lecturer or advisory board member to share your experiences from your own career with our current students and staff. Don’t hesitate to engage with your alma mater, your experiences are key to future generations!

WORDS FROM THE EDITOR TEXT ELINOR LUNDBERG PHOTO NASEEF KAMAL Welcome, This issue is a special one. Not only since it’s my last magazine before I step down, but also since it’s sent out to our alumni. If you are one of them, I hope finding this magazine in the mailbox managed to put a smile on your face by reminding you of your time as a student here. Many of the team members behind this issue are in the beginning of their university experience, and I’m thrilled to see how they embrace the student life fully. There are always parties waiting to be attended, overalls waiting to be worn and last but not least, exams waiting to be smashed. For me personally, this year has been a JSA roller coaster and I’m so grateful for all the connections, experiences and memories that being an active part of this association has given me.

“Once a JIBSer, always a JIBSer”. I’ve heard it so many times and I am optimistic that it’s true. I hope that the network we build here will continue to mean something after graduating. I hope that the entrepreneurial spirit that is nourished here will continue to flourish in our working lives. I hope that the pride of attending a growing and challenging business school, rather than a traditional one, will continue to inspire innovation beyond the campus premises.

The theme for this issue is Career and when discussing the topic during the writers’ workshop in early October we found ourselves coming back to one single question: What is true success? Well, we are constantly fed with the idea that success is measured in bank balances, job titles and number of social media followers. But if we ignore what society considers successful and instead explore what actually makes people feel successful, the answer is simple; it’s purpose.

What gives purpose is highly personal but it all comes down to that if we will be spending 40+ years of our lives working, we want to work with something that feels important to us. It might seem like a no-brainer to you, but we are actually the first generation that rates purpose higher than paychecks. I can relate myself. In 2014, I got an internship at a pretty cool e-commerce startup in Stockholm (yes, we did have a ping pong-table in the office). I moved to the capital, gave it my all and did well. After four months I was offered a permanent position and some pretty sweet perks. My reaction? I quit and a few weeks later I was in Bangladesh paying to teach English. I know it sounds like a cliché, but the reason for this complete change of scenery was that my job had left me with a full schedule but an empty inside. The hardest part about quitting was disappointing myself, since being part of the startup community was all I had wanted only a few months before – it had been my idea of success.

Whether you are going for purpose, paycheck or both, I believe we can offer an interesting read for you. On the following pages we explore what success is to current JIBS students, how you can turn your hobby into a job and how to get started with a great resume.

EARLY DRAWING OF THE INTERIOR The new Service Center on campus opens up its doors on January 9th. Students can come to the Service Center with their questions, and the staff will help or guide them to the right person. The center provides a shop and a reception that can help with practical matters such as digital exam distribution, documents from Ladok, degree certificates, study counselling, JU card services and accommodation matters.

HULT PRIZE TO JÖNKÖPING UNIVERSITY

On November 25th the internal round of Hult Prize was held at Jönköping University for the very first time. The winners will go to regional finals - either in Dubai, Boston, Shanghai, London, or San Francisco. The global finals will then be held in September in New York City, where president Bill Clinton will announce the winning team and award it $1,000,000 in seed capital to launch the start-up.

Hult Prize is an international competition attended by around 300 universities world-wide. Students work in teams up to four people in order to solve a current social challenge announced by Bill Clinton and the Time Magazine. This year ́s challenge is called Reawakening Human Potential and aims at finding solutions to the refugee crisis.

We caught up with some of the magazine’s veterans to get a glimpse of what it was like to run the magazine and be in the JSA board during their days.

JESPER BARENFELD NOW SENIOR VP, HEAD OF CORPORATE TAX, VOLVO THEN EDITOR IN CHIEF 1997 We were a bunch of happy amateurs who sat in JIBS’ computer rooms night time to put together the magazine. We were the first to have the cover page in colour, which was ground breaking. We also invested in a CD burner to be able to bring the final draft to the printing firm in Bankeryd, since e-mail wasn’t an option back then. One strong memory is when me and my co-worker did an article where we went around and reviewed all the cafés in town. Some were great and some were obviously less good. When the magazine was published we got a call from an upset confectioner who wasn’t happy about the fact that we had written “the snacks get a lower grade” - it’s actually called pastries.

One of my strongest memories from my year as the Head of JIBS United Magazine has to be that one time when we visited a club in downtown Stockholm and I got in to the VIP solely because I approached the bouncer with confidence and spoke the words; ”Mattias, JSA - JIBS United”. Frankly I had no business there so I quickly left the area. Still a fun memory though and proof that the JSA board gets you places. Another one is of course when I got elected as the Head of JIBS United during the JSA Annual Meeting where the Election team thought I lacked experience design-wise to make the cut. The former H.O. JIBS United, Nicolas Waern, then spoke against them and gave his warm recommendations for me as the next Head. Well executed by Nicolas and I think we all can agree I made the cut - although I outsourced the design work to students from JTH, haha.

Interviewing new writers for the first issue was unforgettable. One writer to go through the interview process was a master’s student; both incredibly sharp and experienced. But he was nervous! I couldn’t help but laugh at the irony.

Here he thought I was some big shot, savvy editor when, in reality, I had been elected only a month prior, had no idea what I was doing, and was desperate for writers to fill up the spots on the team. I like to think of that whenever I’m exceptionally nervous for an interview. Everything’s relative.

YOUNG, WILD & FREE CHALLENGES OF THE DEPENDENT GENERATION.

There are obstacles that can get in the way of your dreams.

Some are controllable as choosing the right career, while other aspects such as the world economy are harder to deal with.

Dare to change paths One of the most common questions we get asked at a young age is “what do you want to be when you grow up”, which gets harder to answer as we get older. Many people are forced to make a decision right after they graduate high school about their career. This type of pressure stresses individuals who do not have a plan and therefore leads to a degree that disinterests them. However, a change can be made and although it may be challenging, whoever said it was impossible is lying.

There are many opportunities to change paths, such as earning a postgraduate level in another industry. While it varies with the prerequisites, there are programs that allow students to apply with an unrelated program as long as a letter of motivation and a list of activities are included. If a degree is not possible, there are other ways to learn more about your desired field such as taking short courses for a few weeks at university.

However, if studies are not of interest, maybe you can start a business. My father is a prime example as he originally studied electrical engineering and although he gained useful experiences from university, he realized his passion was for business and pursued that instead. Of course there are many other possibilities that were not mentioned, but the fear of changing paths should not stop your dreams.

Go your own way When choosing a career, family and friends might disapprove and influence you to pursue an undesired degree but that should not dictate your decisions.

There are many successful individuals who went out and fulfilled their dreams despite conflicting opinions from family members. Forrest Gump and Back to the

Future, two well-known movies, would not have existed if the director, Robert Zemeckis, had not applied for film school even though his parents believed he should have a blue-collar life. My uncle studied mechanical engineering because my grandparents believed that it was a stable career. However, after he earned his degree, he followed his passion for music by opening up a music store and then later on working with a record label, which led to his present music career.

Therefore, other people should not decide what will be beneficial for your life.

Face the risk of unemployment There was an interesting observation made by the European Central Bank president, Mario Draghi, that young people are not getting hired because companies prefer to keep their older staff with permanent contracts instead of dealing with temporary contracts. Having an education does not always help since it does not prepare youths with the skills that employers look for. Along those few limitations, competition has also increased as jobs are now demanding higher qualifications by requiring more than a bachelor’s degree and minimum years of experience. There was a survey that found that some people only look for jobs where they meet 100% of the qualifications because they had a fear of rejection and did not want to waste time having hope. This fear can stop people from reaching their full potential. Don’t let that be the case for you.

Deal with limited finances As Abba likes to say “money, money, money must be funny, in the rich man’s world”. If we had all the money in the world, then the options would be endless but that is unfortunately NOT always the case. Since it’s hard to find jobs, there are many young adults that go back to living

with their parents even though they want to start their own life. 48% of people aged 18-30 in Europe actually have to depend on their parents after university and this has led to the label “the Dependent generation”. It is near impossible for some people to go out and seek another degree or live in a new country because of the expenses that come with it. It is bizarre that people are expected to be successful when they cannot event afford to live by themselves.

Living comfortably is not impossible though, so we turned to the JSA Investment Club for some financial guidance.

Malin Movin, Head of capital management, provided several tips on how to save money. “Since Swedish students can get CSN loans, they can try to save 10% every month and put it into a savings account. Students can also plan their spending by creating a food budget and make lunch for the week, instead of buying out everyday. If investing interests them, they could invest in low risk companies or funds through their own internet banks or internet banks such as Nordnet or Avanza. They can also attend Investing for beginners which is weekly classes held by us, to learn about how to invest wisely.

These are just a few of the tips but they can make a notable difference”.

David Tingåker, President of the JSA Investment Club, further explains how the club is open for everyone interested in learning more about investing and finance, and that no previous experience is needed. He encourages all students to take the leap and start investing ”the easiest way is to start an automatic monthly transfer of 100 SEK to a cheap index fund. Taking charge of your personal finances doesn’t have to be much more complicated than that”.

If those people could do it, why wouldn’t I be able to make it happen for me? We see it every day, ordinary people from all over the world making a living thanks to their passions. Yet, a lot of us keep our passions and careers separate, not necessarily because we want to, but because we don’t even know where to start.

We’re living in the 21st Century and the possibilities for us today are a hundred times bigger than they were for our grandparents, or even our parents. As a result of the technological advances that happened during the last decade, we have opportunities that you could never

have imagined if you had been growing up in the 1930s. Today, you can work from an office, but thanks to the Internet, you could just as easily work from the comfort of your own home or from a beach in Thailand with the same result.

There’s nothing like someone else’s story

to help oneself to get inspired. There are so many people around the globe that work hard and make their passions something more than just a passion.

They have a dream, they go after that dream and then their reality becomes their success story.

MAKING A LIVING ON MEDITATION Josefine Bengtsson showed that you can turn your hobby into your profession.

After she studied for five years at Stockholm School of Economics and worked as a strategy consultant for a year, she knew how stressful and demanding a big city life could be. Something that helped her deal with all the stress was yoga and meditation. It became a big part of her life because she realized that yoga had a magical effect on stress, pressure and performance anxiety. After doing some research, which involved university courses in anatomy, physiology and diet to help widen her knowledge, and visits to yoga-retreats in India to get more experience, she decided to take the jump and pursue her passion.

called Yogiakademin, where the main concept is to combine a lovely outdoor environment with some exciting inner practice. Yogiakademin offers retreats in a castle in France during the summer, a villa in Biarritz during autumn and beach bungalows in India during the winter.

Josefine Bengtsson realized that she had a huge passion for yoga and everything surrounding it. She had such a big interest that she knew that it was something she wanted to do every single day. Today, she gets to call herself a full-time yoga instructor. She gets to not only call yoga her passion, she also gets to call it her career.

Bengtsson believes that the world will be an even greater place if more people brought yoga and meditation into their lives. Now, she is a yoga instructor, a blogger and she runs a travel company

Prioritize

You need to prioritize things in your life in order to get to the goal. Sometimes it’s going to be difficult and other times it’ll be a piece of cake. But it’s important that you try to prioritize so you can get closer to achieve your dreams.

Improve your skills as much as you can, and as often as you can

Take any and all opportunities you can to improve the skills you need for the passion, whatever it might be.

Be aware of the demand and your competition

Look around you and take it all in, how many others have the same passion as you? You need to ask yourself what makes you stand out from your competitors.

STORIES TURNED INTO A SENSATION Brandon Stanton is another success story when it comes to turning your passion into your profession. Stanton arrived in New York from Chicago in 2010, with the goal of photographing 10,000 people on the streets of New York City. He was a self-taught photographer, who set up a photo-blog called “Humans of New York” that was practically ignored for a whole year, before it really took off.

Today, Humans of New York has more than twenty million followers on social media. Stanton’s other accomplishments include interviewing president Barack Obama and landing himself two book deals with a major publishing company.

Before his success, Stanton struggled with his career, like a lot of other people do.

He lost his job and that’s the reason he decided to pursue photography full-time.

Today, he is not only a well-known photographer, he is also a best-selling author and blogger. In 2013, he was named one

Humans of New York ended up being so much more than the original plan, Stanton started to include quotes and short stories from the people he photographed.

Today, a worldwide audience can get a glance into the lives of strangers on the streets of New York City. Brandon Stanton started out as a street-photographer, but he managed to exceed all expectations and now he gets to do what he loves every single day.

The saying goes, choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.

Everybody has heard the saying, but for most people a dream job remains just that: a dream. So how do you do it? How do you turn your hobby or whatever you love into your full-time profession?

Be open to suggestions and learn from mistakes

Don’t get too fixated about your idea of how you want to succeed, keep an open mind and be ready to grab an opportunity when it passes by.

Have patience

If the goal you have is further away than you maybe first thought, don’t give up, be patient and find another way to reach that goal.

Believe that your dream will come true

Your biggest supporter is always going to be you. If you don’t believe in your dream, why would someone else?

You need to always believe that you can make your dream come true.

LET’S BRAND YOURSELF! TEXT ANUP BANERJEE

Living among thousands of brands surrounding us, we hardly notice how subconsciously we are attached to selective names irrespective of price and design while choosing between two or more products or services. And in most of the cases, we simply skip the “about” section on the product label and just buy it.

The key reason behind this behavior is the successful presentation and presence of those brands in the media. Building a brand takes time and tremendous dedication, but often the results are well worth the investment.

Now, what would happen if we were to

establish ourselves as a brand? Well, the simple answer would be, if you can make it happen, you will gain a strong competitive advantage when it comes to your career, social life, and virtual identity.

Trust me. It’s not magic and it’s not even that tough either. Just by keeping a few things in mind, you can nail it!

LET’S HAVE A LOOK AT FIVE KEY RULES…

Define yourself

The first and probably the toughest task is defining yourself. To define your true self, you must be a good observer, listener, and even an aspiring philosopher. Find an aim in your life and relate your everyday experiences with that dream to find your true USP, your Unique Selling Proposition. You must be courageous enough to explore your strengths and weakness, but at the same time, you must explore your true potential to grab the right opportunity at the right time. Find the theme of your life, this is a MUST.

Know your audience

Undoubtedly you can’t satisfy everyone, you shouldn’t try to either. You must know who are your “givers” and who are your “takers”. Find ways to interact with the givers for suggestions or help when you need, and learn from them. For takers on the other hand, carefully evaluate what you can give to them, what they want from you and how you are connected. You must know which industry fits best with you and who are the key stakeholders of that sector. Design your message as per their requirements and explore what they want to have from you. Knowing your audience well will take you one step ahead of others.

Get your artillery ready

Once you have explored yourself and your audience, it’s always prescribed to follow up with the common ways to establish a communication between two parties. Some may prefer written communication, whereas others would love to have a chat with you. If you are to start a business, know how to reach your potential clients before contacting them, know how to write a proposal letter for a venture fund and even understand basic legislative procedures to start the business. If you are a sales guy, try to practice facing crowds and selling your products to them.

Attachment to an established brand will add weight to your presence. For example, take a badge of your school if you visit an alumnus or carry your national flag while attending international events.

For students, I would recommend you to always have a business card ready. Simply provide name, program, university, contact address and LinkedIn id. You can use online platforms like Canva.com for designing a smart business card or a digital CV, even Microsoft PowerPoint can be used in this context. You may search on Google for more creative ideas. Who knows, your future boss might be giving your next guest lecture. Simply give a business card and talk for a minute if possible. Let him or her not forget you amidst the crowd. Other tips for being prepared include learning and practicing an elevator pitch. Find and connect with the alumni of your school in LinkedIn to get more information on recruitment opportunities.

Build a virtual YOU

Now the coolest part! It’s easy but a lengthy one. Certainly, you are familiar with Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other social media platforms. If you don’t have any account on them, open one now and keep it updated. Create a single, unified image of yourself across all online platforms and try to promote the same message everywhere focusing on your interests and capabilities. If possible make a simple website having your CV, contact option and a couple of sample writeups. You can add your weekly blog too. Use hashtags in your posts and give your audience scope to interact on those posts. If you want to go all the way, you can start a Youtube channel, where you can share your ideas on a given topic or simply upload videos from your last trip. Having a Youtube account in your name increases the chance to be on the top list of google searches. Search engines usually show videos first. So, by adding the right tags and keywords to your videos, you are doing SEO in disguise. Oh, by the way, don’t forget to Google yourself every now and then. You can then find out where you end up in the search and how to improve it.

You can also buy a domain in your name for a small price. For free blogging and other cool stuff with nice templates check out Wix.com.

Stay curious

And last but not the least, keep your appetite for learning more. It’s okay if you fail while establishing your personal brand. You must acknowledge this, find out the reasons behind it and design a work plan on how to avoid these mistakes in the future.

There is no shortcut to building an awesome personal brand. It’s all about knowing the trends and the demands of the market and presenting yourself accordingly.

Be inquisitive, and keep working for further development.

The JSA Ball Committe e is a brand new commit tee responsible for the JSA Winter Banqu et as well as the JSA Summ er Ball. The Winter Banquet has bee n an annual event since 2011 while the Summer Ball was launch ed in May 2016. By hav ing a committee responsible for these eve nts we can assure two hig h quality events for all students.

What will happen thi s spring?

During the upcoming spr ing, we will work hard wit h the preparations for the JSA Summ er Ball. Since it is a new event, there are a lot of things that we need to do. Sponsors hav e to be found as well as an amazing ven ue, and of course no eve nt is complete without a magnificent afte rparty, in order to end the school year in a memorable way.

Nowadays, Spring Inspir ation is Scandinavia’s lar gest student-driven fashion show. In 201 2, Spring Inspiration wa s for the first time held at Spira, Jönköp ing’s own culture-house.

This has given the opportunity to, every year, invite 800 people to the fashion show.

What will happen thi s spring?

Lots! Model casting on 31s t of January, ticket release for the Fashion Show in Februa ry, Spring Day in March and last but not least our Fashion Show on 7th of April.

This year Spring Inspiratio n celebrates its 20th ann iversary and has the theme Roaring Tw enties. So, do you wonde r how to maximize your 1920’s outfit?

Do not worry, old sports and doll faces, Spring Inspiration 2017’s team will guide you. First rule: rather overdressed than underd ressed.

• Hats are definitely not a woman’s thing: buy it, use it and never take it off.

JUBEL When did the student pub open at JIBS? Year 2009 How has it developed since then?

Since start, JUBEL has always been appreciated by students from JU. It is a place to relax and/or start the night before aka with a cold beer. How great isn’t it that we have a pub only a few meters from the classrooms?!

Women’s fashion:

• Just as the HUGE hair represent the 80’s, the per fect, shiny wavy hair represent the 20’s.

What will happen this spring?

JUBEL is constant thinking of new ways to develop and get better. During the spring we will continuing cooperate with JSA projects and host fun themes as well as different competitions in the pub.

Discussing dream careers, success and how to get there.

If someone asks me what my dream job looks like, I would not be able to answer this question in only one sentence. I think many of us have a similar vision; to strive for a dream career without knowing exactly what our dream career actually is. To compare my thoughts with other students’ opinions, I met three interesting and inspiring individuals with different experiences and backgrounds.

Name Filippa Stenius Program & Year Civilekonom, second year Interesting fact Filippa started to study directly after graduating from high school, since she knew economics is something she wanted to work with in the future. She has experience in teaching and competing in bugg dance. She is also interested in CrossFit and loves spending time with her four nieces.

Name Josh Francis Program & Year Marketing Management, second year Interesting fact Josh is born and raised in England, but was already living in Sweden for 3 years before he moved to Jönköping. Josh can actually understand Swedish so do not get confused by his British accent! He studied acting in England, and gained experience from different shows and movie auditions.

Name Emma Hasselgren Program & Year International Economics, second year Interesting fact Emma is currently working in recruitment. She gained experience from, among others, Customer Relation team leader at IKEA in Oslo. She started working when she was 14 years old and sometimes admits that she is actually working too much. Besides that, she is also interested in investment and motorsports.

What did you want to become when you were a child?

Emma: When I was younger I answered that I wanted to be a doctor, but I always had a passion for economics and mathematics. I guess that is why I ended up here.

Josh: I wanted to be an actor, I actually studied acting at college level.

Filippa: I wanted to be a kindergarten teacher, a lawyer, a fashion designer and lastly, an economist.

What is your dream career?

Emma: I have worked at IKEA. There is an interesting position available there, namely analyzing where the next store should be located. I think that it is a position I am really interested in, analyzing the market and deciding where to put the next store. I would consider to work in that position in any company actually.

It does not have to be for IKEA, but I would like to work in a big international company.

Josh: Besides being an actor, I do not really know a dream career, but a requirement would be to work whenever you want to work. Do something for six months, then find another job and see what happens next. Otherwise, I would like to work in promotional jobs, projects or marketing, and maybe something related to food. Maybe combine those things‌ Filippa: I am not sure yet, but I want to work in something related to economics.

Maybe as an accountant or a job related to accounting? A dream career would be to work in something I find interesting.

What will be your first step to chase your dream after graduating JIBS? Emma: My plan is to apply for as many different jobs, trainee programs and master programs as possible, and see where I will end up. I also have the option to go back to IKEA, so I might consider to work there as well.

Josh: I am thinking about doing a master’s degree. I also have some contacts in Dubai, so going to Dubai and project work is always an option.

Filippa: I am planning to get an internship probably the same year as I go abroad. If I like the place where I do the internship, then maybe I will go back there and apply for a job.

What does it mean for you to be successful?

Emma: Success for me is to achieve your dreams or at least being on the way to achieve them. It does not matter if the goal is having a family, living in another country or being healthy. It means a lot of different things to different people.

Josh: For me, it does not necessarily mean having goals, but instead enjoying the journey you are on. Simply enjoying the way to achieving a goal. I am not a family man so I would consider living a life with just me quite successful. Hopefully, this also includes helping people to change.

Emma: I think it could also mean to be satisfied with what you have and be happy with the life you already live.

Filippa: I agree with Emma. People can be successful within different areas such as work or family life.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Emma: I could picture myself working in an international company. Maybe not as the boss of the entire company but hopefully as a middle manager. I hope that during these years I have worked in different countries, traveled a lot and found a place where I want to spend the rest of my life. At last, I think I would consider having a family.

Josh: I am not sure if I stay in Sweden. I would also like to do freelance work, and combine work and travel abroad. I have not had the full traveling experience yet and that is still on my list. Eastern Europe, Far East Asia. The Whole world.

Filippa: In 10 years, maybe I will have my own family or start my own business.

I have always dreamed of running my own old style cafĂŠ. Later on, it could maybe turn into a bed and breakfast.

Since I am interested in dancing bugg and foxtrot, I would also consider to have a place with a live band where people meet and dance on Friday nights.

Without creativity, preparation and imagination, I wouldn’t be able to use my brain in the way I want to.

I always think one step further than anyone else. I can be quiet during brainstorming sessions but in my head I think of ways to cover every teams budget and organize all the numbers that pop up.

I see myself as a leader that often take charge when a certain task is presented.

I like to motivate people and consider team spirit to be one the keys in a successful project.

Be in charge for the budget and everything regarding money before a big fair.

I can be myself and feel productive when I sit alone with excel and hundreds of different numbers in front of me.

Whether it is about baking a cake or building a bridge; no task could be implemented and executed by a team that doesn’t have a manager.

For instance, when you are sitting in a room with a group of colleagues and designing and creating the upcoming campaign for your products, you use your creativity and playful mind to brainstorm and share your ideas for the campaign.

As an employee at the economy department, you’re the first one to open the excel sheet in the mornings. You look closely into yesterday’s sales figures and make sure to evaluate them before reporting to the CFO and your colleagues.

You are a central player in the organization. You are the “engine” for the project and by stimulating and motivation the people in the organization, you make sure to lead the project to success.

So, what’s your future profession?

THROWBACKS FROM THE FUTURE: AN UNCONVENTIONAL WAY OF REFLECTING What could be more fun riding into the future and casting back at the present time as an older, wiser person to guide your younger self? Nothing but throwback from future!

AUTHOR ABDIMAJID KHAYRE How would you define the act of “reflecting”? Meg Wheatley, an American writer and management consultant once said, “Without reflection, we go blindly on our way, creating more unintended consequences, and failing to achieve anything useful.” The quote may not have answered the question, it does however, set the stage for what will be discussed in the article. Reflecting, to put it simply, is a process just like career is a process. It is a process of making sense of one’s experience. Experience in the last sentence implies something of a past and yes, reflecting on the past is how most of us shape our futures. That said, do we always have to reflect on the past exclusively? Can we reflect on present time and the choices we are making now?

The answer may lie somewhere here: we take you forward and let you envision yourself ten years from now so you can cast back on the present time, hence reflect from the future.

Before we take this journey, let us dig deep into what actually is the art of reflecting and why it is important to all of us. As we go on with our lives, we absorb new information, become experienced with new things or see things from a new perspective.

Hence, we have to reflect to piece together all these new things to assess ourselves and hence achieve more personal growth. Moreover, self-evaluation is singularly important when making career choices.

The truth is, many of us do not know what we want to be from a young age. We may have a dull idea about our future profession but it is often through constant self-assessment based on our observations, our inner voices and the feedback we get from others that we rely when embarking on a certain career path. However, the art of reflecting has not become mainstream yet. We do reflect, but not deliberately and consciously

and that is the key, the elephant in the room. Reflections have to be purposely and regularly done regardless of one’s age and it is particularly imperative for us students and recent graduates who are at a critical point of our career paths.

One way to thoughtfully reflect is to do “throwbacks from the future”. The idea is to fast forward a decade or two to picture the lifestyle, career and relationships you wish to have at that point.

Question how and why you got there.

This will allow you to envision your future as if it is in present time and to think back carefully about an imaginary past.

Essentially, it is an older, optimal version of you who is advising your present self, and who could be a better guide to you than yourself ? Here is a demonstration of a throwback from the future in the form of a storyline:

2016 You are a first-year student at JIBS. You have always liked the idea of working at international organizations that are devoted to helping people (aid agencies or charities). As for now, you believe you are on the right track. You go to an international business school which will help you get your dream job as JIBS is an international-oriented school aside from fact that it offers the suitable knowledge that you will need to work at international organizations. That may be all you know for now.

2026 You are working for Oxfam as program manager. You have a decent salary and get to travel a lot. You got your dream of working at an organization that is dedicated to helping people.

But how did you end up here? What did it take to come here and what choices and sacrifices did you make? Does your job match with your passion?

This scenario demonstrates how reflecting from the future back to the present time will let you envision your future more vividly and force you to think about things that are not in the scope of your experience.

You had a lot of interesting positions since graduating. What’s the secret?

My secret, as far as I can remember, has been two things: first my self-awareness, i.e. knowing what I want in life and second, being proactive in getting it.

How did you end up in Dubai?

I’ve always allowed myself to be flexible and ready to go anywhere. For Dubai, I was headhunted for a great managerial position directly after my studies abroad at ESSEC in Paris.

What does a regular work day look like for you?

I can’t help but smile whenever I’m asked this question, for the past two years after I graduated, I decided to never be bored; therefore nothing is regular as I put my hands in many companies cookie jars (I always stop myself from saying ”many balls in the air” as I understand that the expression is Swedish and that Swedish really like balls).

How do you think back at your time at JIBS? Just like any place you are in the world, it is not the location that matters, it’s the people in it. My closest friends and relationships are from here. JIBS provides a great atmosphere for students to mix self-learning and team-work (almost every course has a group project = perfect for getting new friends).

Any advice to current students?

Take time to get to know new people, outside of your comfort zone, such as the students from abroad - including the French (my experience says they have a hard shell to penetrate but they do know everything about good wine).

As much as you’re investing in your studies and trying to get good grades, invest in your interpersonal skills. I’ve helped several of my connections into their positions with a recommendation.

What and when did you study at JIBS? I was a student at JIBS 95-99. The school wasn’t ready when I started so the first two years we had our lessons at a night club.

How has it been to start your own company?

I started my business after three maternity leaves. I had no contacts and I didn’t know anyone who had started a business from 0 and built it to a global business. It has been hard to find the right way forward. It has been many obstacles and detours on the way. The key is to never give up and to keep your eye on the goal. Also to find a way to stand up quickly after mistakes.

What is something you’ve realized about being an entrepreneur, that nobody tells you?

It includes so much frustration and that it takes so much longer than you think.

How do you think back at your time at JIBS? I’m very glad I studied at JIBS. I enjoyed it even if I had to study a lot. At JIBS you learn to analyze and to put different perspective together, that is a great skill when being an entrepreneur. Any advice to current students? Make sure that if you want to become an entrepreneur do something that stimulate your heart and brain. Make sure you have great support around you. It is tough but worth it!

RESUME LIKE A PRO

Trying to get your resume into a masterpiece? Are you looking for a special desirable job? Well, in order to get that special job you’re striving for, you need to have a resume that will help you get there. There are a few things that you should have in mind when writing your resume, along with some do’s and don’ts, as listed below..

Look forward.

Instead of talking about what you have done, focus on the future, what will happen if they hire you? E.g. “Since I have 15 years of marketing experience, I can…”. Talk about what you can offer the company and how your skills will be useful for that job.

Focus on your accomplishments.

Describe your results rather that listing everything you did at your past job. What did you accomplish and how is that relevant for the next job? What can you contribute to that company to achieve great results?

Put your skills and qualities in the center.

What skills are the company looking for? Highlight and focus on them, rather than listing every skill and qualities you have. Focus on what is relevant and what is not.

Why you?

What makes you special and why should the company hire you? Make sure your resume stands out from others by underlining why you should be the one to be hired: special qualities you possess, maybe an education that stands out or previous experiences.

Your resume is nothing more or less than an advertisement for yourself, it’s a tool to win an interview and in order to win an interview, you will need to make your resume stand out from the average. Keep it simple yet interesting and make sure you have an impressive start to maintain the reader’s attention.

Do’s and don’ts Do proofread your resume! You don’t want any errors. Check your spelling, grammar, syntax etc. before sending it.

Don’t put the word “Resume” at the top.

Do consider a bullet point style to make your resume as reader-friendly as possible.

Do include ways to contact you.

Don’t ever lie on your resume.

Don’t include your references. Send them separately when asked for and don’t write the phrase “References available upon request” because it is a given that you will provide references upon request.

Do avoid the verb “work” because it’s a weak verb. Everyone works, be more specific.

Collaborate is usually a good substitute.

I met Line after her lecture at JIBS, where she shared her story with the 90 attending students. Just by listening to her, I immediately got the feeling that she is both very humble and driven. After the lecture, a dozen of students lined up to talk to her.

She introduced herself to each student separately and took time to answer every question she got. I noticed how she tried her best to give advice and encourage them to follow their dreams. When we sat down at the café at JIBS, she was very relaxed. During our conversation, I understood that Line is very ambitious, dedicated and she always wants to move forward and improve, which confirmed my previous thoughts. She told me that she is driven by the thought that it’s possible to always make things better.

She believes that it’s often the people that are eager to try and learn new things that engage in projects, and the employer sees that.

Line graduated from the Business Administration program at JIBS in 2012 and has been busy since then. Today, she is the Head of Merchandising for H&M in Sweden. The job means that she is sales responsible for H&M in all of Sweden, she is in control of how much they are selling and what garment they have in the stores. Her job includes visiting stores twice a week as well as leading her team. She said that she often brags about the company since she doesn’t have anything to brag about herself. I don’t feel like that is true when hearing her story about how she ended up there.

Growing up, she did not know for sure what she wanted to do. The business sector was not an obvious choice. When she was younger, she wanted to be an architect or a psychologist. After high school, she decided to go to the USA to work as an au pair. During her time in the USA, she realized that she is a generalist and that she likes to see results.

Line then moved to Jönköping to study at JIBS. After her second year, she got a summer internship at H&M as a Business Controller. At first, she wasn’t sure if she should apply and if it even was something she wanted to work in, but after the internship it all became clear. She said that it’s hard to know what a job really means until you try it. After

graduating, she got a full-time job as Business Controller and then she got a job as Head of Controlling. In just a couple of years, she worked her way up to the position she has today.

The best thing with her job as Head of Merchandising is all the amazing people she works with, and there is a great energy within the company. She also said that she likes to work close to thesales and the costumers. She can’t see herself in another company than H&M. During her years at JIBS, Line was active both as the Head of Internal

There is one point in which Line is very clear, you make your own luck.

She said that she has the opportunity to meet many talented people, and that she can see the difference between the people that are successful and the people that don’t really make the cut. The difference is that the successful people, they are making their own luck. It’s not up to anyone but yourself. This was a subject that appears both during her lecture at JIBS and during our conversation. She explained carefully what she believes people should do to create their own luck. It’s important to be curios and dare to ask for help, because the people who do so realize that they don’t fully understand the world and therefore continue to develop. She also mentioned how crucial it is to choose your battles and not get distracted by incidents or circumstances which are outside your scope. Focus on what you can control, don’t put energy in things you can’t do anything about. Be your own best all the time and trust that it will pay off; Don’t underestimate the importance of making a result wherever you are at; if it is as a waitress at your extra job during your studies or at your dream-job.

You are not better than your last result and putting in your best at all time will pay off!Be interested in people, there are so many people around you that know things that you never will find out if you don’t ask. Line said that the first thing she does when visiting the stores is asking How’s your selling? followed by a simple Why? Because she can’t depend on other people telling her the things she wonders about, without asking. Finally, she emphasized the importance of being yourself.

She told me that the reason she has come this far is that she always tries to do her best, but not take herself too seriously.

Being yourself will make it easier for you to accomplish your goals.

Dear Students, Faculty, and Alumni, With only a few weeks left of my term as President of JSA, I look back at the year with pride, gratitude and hopefulness. We have had a very successful year so far, and I hope that all the engaged students who contributed to this will remember it as a happy year filled with new experiences and interesting encounters, despite some stressful periods juggling both exams and different projects.

I am proud of all that the JSA Board, committees, projects and every single engaged student have accomplished this year, and how much our association has evolved. We now have a more stable organizational foundation, we have launched a new website, started up several new projects, improved communication within the association, and had many successful events and projects over the year so far. I am grateful for the enormous engagement our students continually show time and time again, for all the students who have dedicated their free time for the benefit of every student at JIBS as well as the opportunity to add a substantial merit on their CVs, and for the privilege to hold the position as JSA President for the past year. I feel hopeful for the years that are to come. JSA has a bright future, and I strongly believe we will continue to grow and improve every year, that we will be able to solve any difficulty that come our way and that we will be an association known even outside of the Swedish borders.

With these sentences, I have written my last Words from the President, and I want to thank every member in JSA for this year. I would like to thank our committee heads, project managers and all their team members for making student life at JIBS as great as it is, as well as the fadders for your enthusiasm and mentorship both during and after the kickoff. I want to thank all our partners and sponsors for such a great collaboration this year, as well as the leadership team and faculty at JIBS for all the help you have provided us. I would also like to thank my fantastic coworkers and fellow Student Association Presidents at Jรถnkรถping Student Union for your constant support and for being the best sounding board, and finally I would like to thank my Board for your hard work and strong engagement for our association.

As cheesy as this may sound, I tend to be inspired by strong, intelligent people such as Hillary Clinton. She seems to have gone through it all, and she has never stopped fighting for what she believes in. Despite all the setbacks during the presidential campaign this year, she has continued to impress and has never let herself change just because some people thought she should behave in a different way.

She is such an inspiring person who I look up to on many levels. She has done so much good in the world despite having very limited financial resources. Right now, she is in Tanzania visiting a school she helped open many years ago.
