In Chief Leading the 2025/26 team has been a beautiful journey. With our talented and brilliant members, I desired to not be satisfied only with a well-functioning committee - but to also nurture a small family or a group of friends that get along really well. Until this moment, I believe that everything fell into places in that sense.

I’ve been fond of this magazine since my first week at university back in 2024. I first joined as a writer, but decided to apply to become Editor-in-Chief, because being part of this family is one of the aspects of uni that brings the most value for me.

The only conclusion [for the magazine] was love (Sheldon Cooper, 2014).

Being a nerd is crucial in times of crisis. In times which the use of Artificial Intelligence is casual and encouraged, making people think less and less. In moments in which social media shames others for loving what they do and the spread of hate is natural.

The connection with the art we love is essential, it touches us deeply and makes us see the world in another format and perspective.

Nerding-out is a celebration.

Honouring with pride the works that designed the person you are today - after all, you’re a museum of everything you’ve ever loved and you are what you love (Daylight, 2019).

This theme could not be more special and unique - nerding out has always been such an important part of my whole life. Not being blasé about anything ever is the essence of this Editor-in-Chief. Sadly not a lot of people have the unique feeling of being a nerd - it can be for various reasons, from lack of incentive when growing up to shame, which makes me think of how much they are missing out; the joy of unapologetically loving the art and consuming it the way it is intended to in an unreal sentiment. It is about letting the passion of what you love burn you in delight.

If I hadn’t read a certain book in December 2019 and become obsessed with it - I would not be here writing this opening text for the Fall 2025 issue of 2025 today. Nerding out opens doors that we did not know that existed.

At its core, the magazine is the epitome of nerding-out - why would you write and read pages upon pages of content if you do not feel it in your bones?

JIBS United is here as a breath of fresh air from the business world that we are influenced by every day going to uni. As human beings, we need art and creativity to feel alive.

And that has been our goal since 1996 and will continue to be.

Ed itor in C h i ef When I think about what nerding out really means, I see it as deeply personal, a small yet powerful way to show the world who you truly are. It’s about letting your passions speak louder than your fears, and never being scared to show who you actually are or what you truly like.

Joining this magazine has reminded me again and again how beautiful it is to care deeply about something. Whether it's a book that changed your perspective, a movie that makes you cry every single time, or a random niche topic that you could talk about for hours. Passion is what connects us; it’s what gives life meaning.

Being part of this team has been one of the most exciting parts of my university journey. Working alongside people who are so talented, kind, and genuinely themselves has made this experience feel like home. Together, we’ve built more than just a publication; we’ve built a community where curiosity, creativity, and sincerity are celebrated.

This issue is dedicated to the theme of nerding out. It embraces the moments when art, literature, music, or even a niche interest sparked something within us and reminds us that passion should never be hidden. To care deeply is to live fully, and to share what we love is to connect meaningfully with others.

In a world that sometimes pushes us to act indifferent, to hide our excitement or tone down our enthusiasm, don’t listen to them and ‘nerd out!’. It is a quiet rebellion. It’s choosing to love loudly, to care unapologetically, and to keep learning simply because it makes your heart full So, let this issue be a reminder never to dim your spark. Show your passions, embrace what makes you different, and keep being brave enough to show your true self.

Hi, I hope you are busy with something you enjoy. If not, why not?

Take a break from your phone, look around, hold your breath or something, idk... Whatever it is, just do it. That's my mom's favorite slogan. It's lowkey a cheat code mentality. Of course, don't always "do it". It's good to think first sometimes as well, but slow motion is better than no motion.

Am I supposed to give advice? I’d like some first. That’s my advice. Listen.

JSA’s in a good place right now - our committees are doing well, great. We haven’t been stretching, but we’re flexible. I’m betting this “roll-with-the-punches” mindset is what’s enabled our prosperity. Everything isn’t blue skies… but they sell rose-colored glasses at ICA Maxi, so highkey, I take that back. (not the glasses ofc.)

If that didn't make any sense, it's probably cuz it didn't... I bet it made nickels though. Ahh, bad joke. I do, however, think that everything that happens makes perfect sense, except for everything, it prefers barter. Seriously though, we're doing well financially - and that's thanks to you guys!

But there's more to life than just money, there's dinner. Ahh, my bad (again) - it's late, and I'm late: to dinner. I'm thinking Heinz Beans in Tomato sauce, with some salt (yeah, boujee).

Hmm. What to say now? I never know. Do you? My advice was to listen, but unless your friend has been reading this out loud to you, you’ve been reading it. So my bad again! Maybe I should add “reading” as another tip.

For me, being so involved in things we like is something we carry with us from childhood. We all had strong interests back then, and most of us can still remember them or even talk about them for hours. There’s comfort in that, a kind of innocence. I think it’s a bit like stepping away from adulthood - all the responsibilities, expectations - and just letting go. It’s like hiding a little from the outside world and getting lost in something we strongly care about.

Some people have always followed a different path - interests that weren’t seen as “cool” or popular. A few years ago, it could have been hard to be understood. But now? There’s a light at the end of the tunnel. More and more people are openly talking about their “weird” obsessions, doing it without shame. And we’re letting it happen! Deep down, we all do care. We still get excited. We still believe in things having great meaning.

It’s like we’re giving ourselves permission to feel joy again.

THE JOY OF NERDING OUT What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word ‘nerd’? Probably, you would think of someone who’s a bit isolated, not really engaged in the world around them. Focused on one or a few specific things, they could be considered uninterested in anything outside their own bubble. Some people would say they’re just not cool. We’ve grown used to negative views of that term, that means of course - stereotypes.

But why do we still hold on to this perspective? There should be no space for judgment anymore. Public perception is constantly shifting, and I think we often fear showing our true selves because of that. We can’t possibly fit into everyone’s expectations, right?

If you are passionate (maybe even a little obsessed) about something, people often take it as an opportunity to mock you for it. But to me, that’s exactly what makes us stronger. It’s what makes us unique, confident, and more in touch with who we really are. As John Green, a famous young-adult writer, once said:

It’s not just a feeling we keep to ourselves either. We can share it and find lifelong friends who also love digging deep down into the same topics. Of course, not everyone will be into the same things, and that’s totally okay. What matters is showing interest in people’s passions, even if you don’t share them. The problem only starts when someone chooses to judge you for it, showing you they are someone closed-minded. Someone who might never understand how it feels. Maybe even someone who’s afraid of being themselves, and instead chooses to insult others to cope with their own insecurities. In the end, you are not weird - you care deeply and that is a struggle in today’s world. For those of you who quite don’t get the hype: next time someone talks passionately about something you don’t understand, try to listen. They’re showing you a part of their happiness. And maybe, if you allow yourself, you’ll get to find yours too.

“Why is being a nerd bad? Saying I notice you’re a nerd is like saying, ‘Hey, I notice that you’d rather be intelligent than be stupid, that you’d rather be thoughtful than be vapid, that you believe that there are things that matter more {…}’’ That feeling of discovering something you’re nerding out about?

It’s honestly exceptional. It fills you with joy, gives you energy, and sometimes even a sense of purpose. Everyone experiences it differently, and we all interpret that emotion in our own way.

Now that we’ve explored the idea of ‘’nerding out’’ and how it shapes our lives, let’s dig deeper into some personal obsessions! Everyone has something they’re passionate about.

At school we often see each other in the same exact roles students, classmates, the people we pass in the hallway. But there’s always more to that, we all have our own small worlds.

So, influenced by this thought, we asked around, and here is what our fellow students secretly (or not) shared with us!

Starting off with Anastasija - a Marketing Management student from Latvia known for her impeccable cleanliness. When she was younger, she naturally picked up a habit of extreme tidiness from her parents - whether it’s just wiping the sink after using it or never going to bed without fully removing her makeup. At one point, after returning from parties feeling super tired, she was so committed to keeping her bed neat that she instead slept on the carpet. Her obsession with cleanliness also connects to her passion for perfumes. She geeks out over it in a way that sometimes surprises people. Believe me - walking into her room is like entering a spa - smells amazing, every item is in place and all the colors match each other. One thing for sure - she is always remembered as the girl who smells amazing.

Next we present Stas, a Sustainable Supply Chain Management student from Poland who spends his free time rethinking cities - well, their public transport systems, to be exact. Whether it’s his hometown or a city he randomly becomes interested in, he dives into creating detailed bus and tram lines that should be created there. Stas’ passion is not only about sketching routes - it’s a very logistic and technical process.

His maps are visually stunning, impressively organized and clearly the result of years of dedication. He already planned his whole city’s transportation, but every new one is a fresh challenge waiting for him to solve it. It’s not just a hobby - it’s his way of reshaping the world, one line at a time!

And last but certainly not least we have Sara, a Swedish Civilekonom student. Have you ever heard of the Jellycat company? They are known for designing soft plush toys collections - especially bunnies called Bashful Bunnies.

She started with just two, but now Sara’s shelf looks like a Jellycat museum, with 15 plush bunnies just casually hanging around! She has joined multiple Discord channels and constantly scrolls through niche Instagram accounts to get instant updates when a new bunny color is restocked.

One bunny is her favorite and always travels with her, while the others are far too precious to touch! For Sara, it’s not just a group of plushies — it’s a lifestyle formed over nearly two years of excitement and connection.

All of these passions remind us that there is always something more about people that most likely doesn’t meet the eye at first. Behind every student is a world of interests, habits, and quiet obsessions that make us who we are.

What We’re Nerding Out About: “Student Edition”

I am a nerd, but you are too.

What comes to mind when you picture a nerd? You might be imagining someone with huge glasses, with their nose buried in a book. Perhaps they love math, and maybe they’re so enthusiastic about it that they even get labeled as “uncool” or “socially awkward.”

If we look at the true definition of a nerd, you’ll realize that you might be one too. By definition, a nerd is someone who is immensely passionate and knowledgeable about a specific topic. So If you love basketball and can remember the names and the specialties of all of the players on your favourite teams, you’re a nerd. It’s the same if you can remember all the works of your favourite painters from the Renaissance, if you can solve calculus problems enthusiastically and easily, or if you remember all the important people and milestones of F1.

But why does it almost feel like an insult to be called a nerd?

There’s a chance you grew up hearing the word “nerd” being used as one. Pop culture, especially movies from the 90s and early 2000s, further reinforced this negative stereotype. These movies often consisted of “popular” kids bullying the socially awkward protagonist, who eventually “glows up” by getting a makeover and hiding their real interests – like Cady from “Mean Girls”. Perhaps you were even taught that caring too much about anything was “uncool,” and that it’s better to pretend that you don’t care about anything at all.

The problem is that stereotypes about nerds force enthusiastic people to hide their passions to fit in. This kind of suppression can lead to lower self-confidence and make one feel disconnected from themselves. It can even start to feel like there’s something wrong within you and that you need to change yourself in some way, and only then will you be likeable. In fact, many of us strive to “glow-up,” which often means hiding what makes you unique just to blend in. But is it worth it if it will just leave you feeling empty?

In all honesty, it might suck to openly talk about interests at first. You might even be in your head constantly, thinking if others are perceiving you as weird. However, when you start showing up as yourself and stop living in your head, you’ll see that almost everyone around you is a nerd in their own way too. You’ll start to notice how someone always does their makeup perfectly, because they spent so much time learning all of the right techniques, or someone who knows everything about Harry Potter, because they spend so much time reading.

It’ll show you that nerds are actually so cool because they have a lot to share and have so much to their personalities.

The best part is, openly embracing your unique hobby shows that you are secure enough to embrace yourself, and that you are not afraid of standing out. Additionally, being loud and proud about your interests can help you find likeminded people who will appreciate you for being authentic, helping you build a community. Ever wondered who writes those oddly specific messages in your fortune cookies? Or who does the voiceover for your favourite video game character? Behind every niche job is someone who is unapologetically a nerd.

Too many people are stuck in careers without joy and passion. They complain about the lack of freedom or happiness that comes with the typical 9-5 corporate job or the extremely demanding STEM position they worked so hard for, yet they are unable to leave due to the fear of no longer having a stable income. Some are afraid that their passion might be unprofitable, and others are even afraid of how they may be perceived if they fail. Well, what if I told you that your unique hobby can become your career?

The truth is, just about any hobby can become a profitable career. It’s not about what you do – it’s about how you approach it.

Think of professional gamers, YouTubers, professional mermaids, makeup artists, professional taste testers, marine biologists, and circus performers. These are all highly specialized – and often high paying – careers, yet they all require extremely different skillsets.

What do all these professionals have in common? They nerd-out and dedicate themselves to their craft (ever heard of the 10,000-hour rule?). For example, Canadian YouTuber Lilly Singh managed to become a remarkably successful YouTuber because she was extremely passionate about expressing herself and making others laugh through her videos. She put in a lot of effort to learn how to edit videos, write a book, network with professionals within her industry, and become the famous YouTuber and TV personality that she is today! Ed Sheeran achieved his success by playing at small venues as a passionate teenager, eventually becoming a mainstream popstar with multiple studio albums.

Even Gordon Ramsay started out with just his own restaurant, and eventually became a famous chef, entrepreneur, and TV personality. What all of these notable individuals have in common is their devotion to what they love – they all nerded-out!

If you are looking to turn your unique hobby into a source of income, nerding-out and mastering your craft is the best first step!

For example, if there’s a particular subject. Doing so can help you deeply explore exactly why you love your craft so much, which can be useful when deciding how you want to turn it into your career.

The key is to find the most meaningful and unique way to turn your hobby into an income, and having a clear set of goals or a well-defined direction can help you stay on track. For example, if you’re passionate about special effects makeup and you love helping other people, you could brainstorm ways to make a positive impact by combining the two – whether it’s by starting your own special effects makeup classes, selling your own makeup kits, or becoming a makeup artist for actors! If you love making others laugh or being a class clown, you can write comedy blogs, do stand-up shows, create a youtube channel, or even create your own podcast to spread positivity. If you love entrepreneurship, you can even start your own business.

In addition to creating goals, you might need to develop complementary skills. You can start by taking courses at JIBS that align with your goals and help you learn the skills you need to succeed!

For instance, courses in marketing can help you learn how to promote your products/services effectively, and how to create a strong brand. Courses in operations management or entrepreneurship can help you develop skills needed to supervise or manage a business. Communications courses can allow you to develop strong written and verbal communication skills if you plan on using social media or blogs to interact with your target audience. Moreover, if there is a particular subject you are passionate about, you can continue your studies and attend a doctorate program at JIBS to further master it. Furthermore, there are many online resources that can help you diversify your skillset.

Once you’ve developed the skills you need, it’s time to act!

Apply for roles that inspire you. Create content and build a strong network. Collaborate with peers in your field. Pitch your ideas to investors! It can be overwhelmingly scary to pursue something that can be seen as “unconventional,” and the fear of being seen is very real – especially after a lifetime of being told that nerding-out isn’t “cool.” But the things that seem so scary right now can pay off in the long run. It all depends on how you approach nerding-out.

Nerding-out on a hobby or subject that you are passionate about can really help you master it and eventually get so good at it that no one can replicate what you create. It is such a powerful form of self-expression that can help you build a life where you can be your authentic self every single day.

The Science of Fandom:

Why We Nerd Out?

Written by Ella F r o m Harry Potter to BTS, from Marvel worlds to indie games — something about fandom just draws us in. We binge it all, often without even realizing it, until before we know it, we’re experts in our own little corner of a fandom. And once that spark is ignited, we can’t help but share it — swapping theories, debating plot points, and diving into new stories or games with others as invested.

But why? Why do we care so much? Why do we get so caught up in these makebelieve worlds, these characters, and these stories that exist only in our heads?

The truth is many of us spend over three hours a day immersed in content— whether scrolling through TikTok or Instagram Reels, binge entire seasons in a weekend, or, for the devoted bookworms, losing hours in the pages of a novel. We might tell ourselves it’s “just entertainment,” but all those hours, that emotional commitment, and that sense of connection point all comes down to the psychology of obsession.

At its heart, our fascination comes from the way our brains are naturally drawn to stories. For as long as humans have existed, storytelling has served as a means to understand the world and our place in it. So, our attachment to characters and fictional worlds isn’t just because they’re fun to read about or watch. These stories often reflect something about us — our struggles, our dreams, or even the parts of ourselves we can only access through fiction.

And in that way, fandom isn’t just entertainment; but it becomes an extension of ourselves.

Think back to August — new places, new faces. Through kick-off teams, clubs, or even casual hallway encounters, many of us instinctively gravitated toward others who shared our passions.

That instinct isn’t random. When we meet others who share our interests, it’s more than just common ground—we’re glimpsing reflections of ourselves in them. Fandoms create spaces where we can reveal different facets of our identity, often more freely than in everyday conversations. There’s so much that can be exchanged and discovered when we allow these conversations to happen — there’s a real beauty in that.

Ultimately, when we talk about the psychology of obsession, concepts like escapism, social bonding, and those small dopamine fixations are what compel us to reach for our favorite books, shows, games, and films — and why we keep returning to them again and a g a i n .

Nerds. We’re all nerds in some way—whether it’s through a secret obsession, a fandom, or a passion that completely captivates us.

Remember the old film stereotypes? Glasses, messy ponytails, arms full of books—the lonely outcast with no friends. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Nerds are some of the most connected people you’ll ever meet, forming friendships and communities around the things they love most. And these days, being called a “nerd” isn’t the insult it once was, rather a compliment. Eventually, we realized that everyone is a nerd about something—and that these interests can grow into passions, especially when shared with others. Today, I’m inviting you to test your nerdiness. Everyone has at least one thing—big or small— that makes them a nerd, and that’s something to enjoy, not shy away from. So, are you ready to find out how nerdy you really are?

One fun fact about the Case Consulting Club is that we rebranded this year! In the past, our association was known as “Case Academy,” but many students found the name a bit confusing and weren’t sure what we actually did.

Hopefully, our new name makes it clear that we focus on consulting.

Jubel Last year, we actually broke our all-time record at the bar with the highest tab ever, almost 20,000 SEK in one night!

Next Step - We have had speakers at our Pre-step events ranging from the former Prime Minister of Sweden to elite-soldiers.

BEES

Did you know bees are responsible for pollinating about one-third of the world’s food supply? We’re inspired by their impact and believe in small actions for big impacts on sustainability.

Spring Inspiration Something unusual is that every year we host a fashion show where our design team shows off their collection they have been working on but each design is made out of second hand clothing. They sketch their designs and then go to Eriksjhälpen second hand where they provide them with a pile of clothing, and they can only choose clothes for the collection from that pile. They can only work with what they found and sometimes that means that they have to be more creative when they dont exactly find the materials they want to. Sometimes they even have to redesign parts of their designs or the whole design when they are lacking material for that. It happened last year and the design team managed to create a whole new design out of curtains, which looked very cool. Apart from design team, there are multiple designers from Sweden showing off their collection as well. The models that are walking for the show are students from JU and people from the city that both went through the model casting process. Apart from the bigger events we host a smaller ones as well, such as Clothing Gathering, where we highlight the importance of second hand shopping and not supporting fast fashion. People can buy vintage clothes that Eriksjhälpen provides us with.

Academic committee The JSA Academic Committee’s events are half studying, half fika, and somehow that combo always leads to passing exams (hopefully).

A message from the editor

If a woman is passionate about a singer especially female singers, it proves, therefore, that those artists only sing about love and all of their songs sound the same (but we should excuse some latest unspeakable actions from your favourite male singer, after all, he released such a great album). The list goes on.

Not to state the obvious, but the patriarchal society that we are inserted in has misogyny engrained in its nuances, therefore, everyone women included, unconsciously or not perpetuates sexism in its words or acts. As an exercise, I suggest you begin a little study of delicacy and start noticing the tone of your speech; do you really need to be that loud about a singer you hate? And what is the reason behind the resentment?

Nerding out is a beautiful way of expressing yourself and being open about your adorations.

We must be proud of loving what we do without fear of judgment; everything we do is an act of resistance and showing your devotion to the world is a way of making your voice heard and making a statement about yourself.

Therefore, the best way to finish this issue is by begging you to nerd out.

It is unusual for the Editor-in-Chief to write

anything, but the opening, however, this issue’s theme calls for it. Nerding out, as everything else in the world, was built around the masculine comic books focused on the men, male super– heroes, and anything else that you can think of. Not only that, but also the act of being a nerd is vastly more respected if it comes from a man.

Out of the seventeen members in this magazine, fifteen are women - women who feel much, women who love much, women who are also nerds.

And that is the reason why this theme is so important and why I felt the intrinsic need to write on a cloudy and cold Wednesday of November.

Women’s interests are not taken as seriously as men’s. And that is a statement, the raw truth that you can find at any given moment by just living in society. Men obsessing over sports teams. Getting aggressive over results. Building their whole personalities around it. Reminds you of a lot of men you may know? And no one around them finds it weird - better, they laugh and say it is such a part of boyhood - boys will be boys, isn’t it?

On the other hand, women obsessing over singers.

Women talking a lot about their favourite singer.

Women crying because they saw their favourite singer live. Women showing admiration for said artist. And, suddenly, those women are dumb, annoying, too much. Right?

Works targeting women and that women generally enjoy are perceived as less. A woman does not read because she is smart, a woman reads a lot because she consumes silly romances (which is weird, because I’ve read 49 books this year and only 15 of them were romances… but even if I’ve read only romance books this year, at least I’ve read, what about you?). If a woman is really into a tv show or movie, the media is probably superficial and low quality (meanwhile your favourite cult film that won some Oscars is groundbreaking, correct?).
