WEEK 6 READING: SURFACES THAT CAN BE BUILT FROM PAPER IN ARCHITECTURAL GEOMETRY Question 1: What are the three elementary types of developable surfaces? Provide a brief description. (Maximum 100 words) Three elementary types of developable surface are Cylinders, Cones, Tangent surface of a space curves. Type 1- Cylinders: A cylinder surface S is a surface that is formed by a group of parallel lines. Type 2- Cones: Cones are formed by a group of lines connecting with a certain point. Type 3- Tangent surfaces of space curves: Tangent surface of space curves are consisted of a discrete model and many vertices. Any two consecutive vertices determine the edges and so on of the model. Any three consecutive vertices define a face plane and so on. Question 2: Why is the understanding of developable surface critical in the understanding of architectural geometry? Choose one precedent from Research/Precedents tab on LMS as an example for your discussion. (Maximum 100 words) The importance of the understanding of developable surface in understanding of architectural geometry is that we can know how the plane surface was created and how to apply this surface to our own design work. As we can see, the Greenhouse has a horseshoe plan, creating a loop for changing a series of unique planting and spatial condition. Also the interior and exterior ground planes gradually shifting in relation to each other. So the developable surface is needed. Only we understand how the developable surface technique we have the ability to achieve that kinds of purposes of the building.

The material I used was 290gsm ivory card that was very thick. When I was folding and taping the panels, I taped the two overlaping tabs together. However, it was too thick and not looking very well. So I printed it again, cut one of the overlapping tabs, and taped the left tab to the back of the other surface. It looked better and clear. 5
WEEK 7 READING: DIGITAL FABRICATION
Question 1: What is digital fabrication and how does it change the understanding of two dimensional representation? (Maximum 100 words)
Answer : Digital fabrication is a way of making that uses digital data to control a fabrication process. it have made two- dimensional drawing more efficient, easy to edit, and, with a little practice, simple to do, according to Lisa Iwamoto.
Question 2: Suggest two reasons why folding is used extensively in the formal expression of building design? (Maximum 100 words)
Reason 1: Compared to other planar materials, folding is not so stiff and tigid. It can span distance and support itself. Also, folding is more materially economical, visually appealing, and effective at multiple scales. Reason 2: Folding expands the three- dimentional vocabulary of surface by naturally producing deformantion and inflection.

EXPLORING 3D PANELLING
The main theme of the model is a monumental tower, with a surrounding landscape. All the triangular panels, the landscape, and the rectangular panels, the decorations, are lower than the tower, the panel that is at the middle of the rectangular panels, to highlight the height of the tower. Using the triangular shape is not for saving works, is to let the tower and its decorations to be the attentional center.

At the first time, I printed them out by plotter 3, using 160gsm, but it was too soft I think. Then I used paper cutter to cut the 290gsm ivory card but it was too thick, the only things I got were the template’s outline score. So I had to cut by myself, following the score.
PANELISED LANDSCAPE
I deleted some surfaces of the triangular panels to create some open space around the tower. When I displayed a light under the model, we can see that some triangles, tower and its decorations are lit on, like a sacred monumental square.

APPENDIX
This is the original surface after dealing with the terrace.
After unrolling the tower and its decorations, we can see many labels on the lines of the surface.
This is the taping progress. I used glue to tape the tabs because they were not fixed at once. So I used a great number of clips to fix them.
After finishing the cuting, folding, and taping work, it was photography time! 11
