WEEK 3 READING: LEGER, LE CORBUSIER, AND PURISM. ARTFORUM Question 1: What is Pictorial Space according to Le Corbusier? (Maximum 100 words) According to Le Corbusier,”Pictral space is that which cannot be entered or circulated through; it is irremediably space viewed from a distance, and is therefore eternally resigned to frontality.” Any pictral spce must be created by moving around them but can’t be entered. A frontality of all the objects are viewed from a distance so that the frontality and distance work together to create pictorial space.
Question 2: The Flatness of Le Corbusier’s painting’s are attributable to two properties. What are they? And what are these pitted against?(Maximum 100 words) The two properties that the flatness of Le Corbusier’s painting’s are attribetable are the use of black color and prospect. The use of blackenforce the sense of a continuous surface from edge to edge without break. But According to Le Corbusier,”the surface of the painting a concatenation of grounds against which texture, as thememory image of depth.” They are pitted againstby the contrast and texture.

MARIO’S WORLD

1ST MARIO’S WORLD
I used pencil to draw them so the outlines maybe are not so clear.

COMBINED MARIO’S WORLD This part of Mario World is on the big cloud. We can know that the base should be a a lump of cloud from the imges above. Then the moutains top are coverd by snow. So when I coloring them, I shouldn’t make it very colorful and vivid and I desided to use a series of grey and blue tone as main colors. Mario started from the stair on the lowest corner, then he should escape from the big bullet monster first. Because there is a waterfall, the cloud was devided so he must jump over the gap or he lost. Turn left, then there is a mushroom allow him to become larger. Then turn left, arrived at the triangular prism, jumped over the second gap, then he won when he got to the tube.

WEEK 4 READING: AXONOMETRIC PROJECTION: NEW GEOMETRIES AND OLD ORIGINS FROM PRACTICE: AR CHITECTURE, TECHNIQUE AND REPRESENTATION. Question 1: Explain the difference between Pictoral (in this case perspectival) space and Projection? (Maximum 100 words) The difference between pictoral space and projection is that projection has the van ishing point, which makes the further one smaller and the closer one larger. It’s like what human see through eyes. But pictoral space is not the same.
Question 2: Where did Axonometric projection first arise, and why? (Maximum 100 words) Axonometric projection happened in military context, frst originally used to chart the three-dimensional trajecories of artillery projectiles. Because it couldconvey abstract infomation and it ican be measured and is acurate, is a ideal tool to deal with measu ability, prediction, and verifability.

ILLUSTRATED MARIO’S NEW WORLD We can know it’s heavily snowy from the mountain top, which was shown on the two Mario World imges, so in this drawing, I didn’t use a great range of colors.I mainly use a series of grey and blue tone to render a cold and freezing sense. And I left the snow on mountain top totally white to show what they are. Also I add a highlight layer on the top of these wooden boxes and the stair to show them covered a layer of snow. And the ice boxes are also highlighted beacuse they are transparent and reflective in our real world. In addition, I add a additional and compound floor below the cloud layer. So the tall tower is erected on the 1st floor and it’s so tall to stick out of the cloud layer. Then the water in the pool on 1st floor is from the waterfall on the left side.

APPENDIX
The equipments I used are T-Square, set-square, pencils, fineline pens, eraser, masking tape and tracing paper.
Combined two Mario Worlds together, interacted with these two drawings. Then used finelines to retrace the pencil lines.
Projected the 2D Mario World images forward at 45 degree. Overlaid a A4 tracing paper on it and used 2H pencil and set square to project lines forward from the images.
Scan the fineline drawings to my PC. Use Ps to make it clear and Ai to trace the finelines. At last, coloring my Mario World. Done! 9
