MEASURED DRAWING OF A CROISSANT

How to measure a Croissant? Process 1. Take photos of the croissant on PHOTOSTAGE 2. TRACE the photos of the croissant 3. Cut the croissant into 3 sections 4. Trace and measure each section by USING GRID 5. Create an AXONOMETRIC view of the croissant Reflection 1. When taking photos of the croissant, the angles between the croissant and camera should be horizontal or vertical. 2. Should add more shading when tracing the croissant 3. The height of these three sections I chose should vary, which is helpful to create an axonometric view more accurately

NEW MARIO WORLD

The making of new Mario world. My Mario World is on a pile of cloud. You can see there are many ice boxes here and many small piles of cloud upon the whole world. Mario start at the stair at the lower base and then he climbs up to the cloud floor. There are some direction signs, coins, and mushroom to show the story line. Because the temperature there is very low, so I use use a series of grey and blue tone constantly to create a sense of coldness. I added a lower floor under the cloud base to create a more complex spatial feeling. But the thickness of the cloud didn’t show very obvious so that the whole drawing looks very falt.

Equipments. The equipments I used are T-Square, set-square, pencils, fnelinepens, eraser, masking tape and tracing paper.

Create 2 half worlds. Using tracing pads to measure and locate the objects in pictures, and then create two separated axo views.

Combine two half worlds together. Tracing the two half world into one tracing pad by using fineline pens.

My Mario pictures only have one floor so the first drawing is just one-strey but I think it’s too plain so I added anthoer lower floor later. The main defect of this drawing is the thickness of the mountains are too similar.

Tracing in AI. Scan the fineline drawings into computer. Using AI to trace the lines again and coloring the objects.

PAPER LANDSCAPE

The making of new landscape The terrain I got is high at one side and low at the other side, so I want to create a hierarchical space with a monumental building at the high side. And the lower side is landscape. I make the whole paper landscape symmetrical in order to create a sacred feeling of this monumental spcae. Then around the monumental buliding, I deleted pattern to create a plaza. Except for the monumental building, I used triangular shape patterns, meaning the landscape pyramids. Firstly I wanted to place this triangular patterns ramdonly but it is not very helpful, so at last I place them at a specific order that is shown in the photo at the right side. I tried to achieve a effect of a sense of monumental spcae and in my opinion the model is clean and beautiful although I think it is too simple. It will be better if I added more complex or detailed patterns.

6

If I put the model on a large light, the monumental building and some pyramids are lit on. But the lightest part is the monumental building.

7

Terrain. One side is much higher than the other side, inspiring me to create a hierarchy space.

Pattern. I used three kinds of patterns. The triangular shape pattern is for landscape pyramids. The second one is for decorating the building. The thrid one is unique and is the main building, the highest point.

Perspective view. In this view, I have a feeling that I am standing in front of a tall and sacred building complex.

I only used paper cut to score the template without printing any label or number on it so the whole model is clean and white. In addition, I was very patient when making the model so there are not many gaps between patterns.

Labeling. After I decided that whole shaoe of the model, I strated to label and unroll the patterns and be ready to work on the physical model.

Cities & signs 5: Olivia

INVISIBLE CITY

Cities & Signs 5 - Olivia Marco Polo was impressed by this prosperous scene until he realized this view was just a falsehood. Behind the wondeful scene, there was a giant contrast or gap between the wealthy and poor people, even flled with exploiting and bullying. he said “the city must not be confused with the words that describeit.” “Falsehood is never in word, it is in things. Based on my interpretation of the city that Marco Polo decribed, I decided to use perspective 1 to describe the prosperous view in Olivia and use perspective 2 to create a imagination that the poor people here were in a very tough living position. The main idea to express my interpretation is make this two perspective more contrasting.

The old quad was in front of a fligree palace and a large lawn. Marco Polo stood at the old quad and saw the palace in the distance. Also he came across a welldressed noble with knights aound , keeping the noble safe.

Many poor people were working in perspective 2. The wall and roof were all dirty, covered with soot and grease, showing the great contrast with pespective 1.

REFLECTION

In my opinion, after this course, I have a good understanding about how to turn a flat objects into a 3D drawings such as module 1 and 2, which is very helpful for drawing skills. In module 3, I learned that a surface can be divided into many small panels. I can use this idea to enrich the surface by inserting various patterns in these small panels. In addition, by arranging and designing the interior of the old quad in module 4, I knew how to combine my idea and a limited space together to form a specific effect. Through the whole course, the software skills I gainedare some essential tools in Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, and Rhino. By using these software, I can express some simple idea now and know how to create it. That is very helpful and convenient to develop my creations. In my opinion, each module is not so satisfying to me because I think there are a lot to improve. ① The tracing drawings of the croissant in module 1 is not detailed enough. If I add more shading and hatching in these drawings, they will be much better. ② The thickness in Mario world is not heavy and detailed enough so that the whole drawing is flat. Also, my idea is not creative enough. ③ The model in module 3 is too simple for me and I think It will be better if I use some complex patterns. ④ In module 4, my idea is enough but the whole effect of the drawings are not good enough because I think they look a little bit flat.
