“What are you going to major in?”

When you’re headed to college, that question comes up a lot. It’s a daunting question—a more serious version of “What do you want to be when you grow up?” It’s a question that feels too big to screw up.

Almost like it’s really asking, “Well, who are you anyway?”

Here’s some good news: God already knows exactly who you are.

You were created in the image of a brilliant God who loves you and who gave you a purpose in this world. At Calvin, your education is about much, much more than your major. It’s about discovering that God-given purpose.

This issue of VERGE is dedicated to clarifying some misconceptions you might have about your future major— or about college in general.

Calvin is a great place to discover the best major for you. Why? Our curriculum is designed to educate you broadly, which means about half of your classes will be taken outside your major. Start off by taking a wide variety of classes in subjects that interest you, and you might discover what you want to major in. Even if you don’t, those classes can count toward graduation.

For Isabelle, becoming an English major was a total surprise.

She came into college with a list of what she wanted to study, and English literature certainly wasn’t on her radar.

“I’ve realized over my time at Calvin that I’m not just getting ready for a future career, but also for being a good citizen in whatever community I will live in,” she said.

What changed? She met Calvin’s stellar professors. “I’ve been surprised by the level of care and intentionality that the faculty put into helping students develop as persons.”

Isabelle’s professors have also connected her to amazing opportunities, like studying in the French Alps (she’s there this fall) and a fellowship through the Calvin Center for Faith and Writing.

Even though he switched into the rigorous five-year speech pathology and audiology BA-MA program after his first year at Calvin, he’s had time to take all the courses he needs and stay on track to graduate—all while playing the sport he loves.

“I wanted to play soccer, but I didn’t want to do it at the expense of things like my social life or my schoolwork. Calvin provided the right balance in that respect,” Jacob said.
