SELECTIVE PROGRAMS FOR FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS •H onors Scholars Challenge your curiosity in this top-tier four-year program. You’ll grow in a supportive cohort that strives for intellectual excellence. Honors Scholars take interdisciplinary team-taught courses together, conduct research or complete creative projects with a faculty mentor, and have access to honors housing. •C ollegiate Scholars Develop your mind and deepen your character through academic and cocurricular opportunities. You’ll take upper-level interdisciplinary courses, tackle big questions, and grow as a leader in the Calvin community. •J ohn M. Perkins Leadership Fellows Build leadership skills and learn to respond thoughtfully to issues like poverty, racism, and injustice. •F irst-Year Research in Earth Sciences (FYRES) Collect data on Lake Michigan’s coastal dunes to investigate important questions and present your findings to dune managers. •P hage Research Program Discover your own bacterial virus, or “phage,” in this two-semester research course. Using cutting-edge genomics tools, you will analyze and catalog your phage’s DNA data in an international database.

MORE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES Science Division Research Fellowships (CSRF) Apply for a student research fellowship to earn $4,200 for the summer or academic year. Investigate alongside professors who are experts in their field as you research a variety of subjects in labs, libraries, research centers, local waterways, churches, and more.

Beckman Scholars A prestigious award from the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation that recognizes institutions with outstanding undergraduate research environments across the country. This award funds the specialized long-term research of four students in chemistry or biology. Goldwater Scholarships The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation awards one- and two-year scholarships of up to $7,500 per year to undergraduate students doing research in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. Since 2008, 24 Calvin students have been recognized as Goldwater Scholars, and 15 have been named honorable mentions. McGregor Fellowships Specifically for students of the arts, humanities, and social sciences, this fellowship allows you to earn up to $3,300 during the summer while working closely with a faculty mentor. Past research has covered diverse topics such as sports and masculinity, women’s rights in the Arab world, and writing about religion and film.
