Portraits in education Class of 2025

Every graduate in the class of 2025 is a special link in the chain of our community. These seniors have tutored kids on how to read, shadowed search and rescue, clocked in at restaurants and stores, competed around the state, fed community members in need and more. These feats were done all while balancing academics, friendships and family.

Now, the students beloved by mentors, teachers, counselors and coaches will take their dedication, empathy, thoughtfulness, drive and talent across the globe. Many said they’ll never forget their roots and how much Jackson has given to them, but it’s time to move the tassel from the right side of their cap to the left and head off on their next adventure.

The following are just a small sample of the standout stories, lessons and memories of the class of 2025.

Eveline Baez

For Eveline Baez, her education is the start of something new.

“Coming from a first generation family, I think it’s breaking the cycle,” she said. “It’s like starting a legacy. Starting something for future generations.”

Baez has lived in Jackson her entire life, but will head across the Atlantic Ocean after she graduates high school to attend St. Louis University in Madrid. When she first began looking at schools, she considered sticking closer to home in the Western region. But then she explored her options across the globe. She was accepted to a school in Mexico, as well as St. Louis University.

“I started looking into it more and started liking it more,” she said. “It was a really unique experience.”

She plans to major in international business with a minor in computer science.

“I would want to be the owner of my own company,” she said. “I’m not sure of what yet, but I would like to create an app at some point.”

Baez is dreaming big, but she won’t forget the lessons that she learned during her time at Jackson Hole High School.

“There’s always a way out of a hard situation,” she said. “We have a lot of support here from counselors and teachers.”

Edwin Cabrera Vazquez

Giving back to the community throughout high school was an unforgettable experience for Edwin Cabrera Vazquez.

He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, Teton Literacy Center and Hole Food Rescue. Of the time he spent with the organizations, Cabrera Vazquez said ensuring families in the community had food was his favorite. He loved knowing residents who might be struggling to get food on the table wouldn’t have to worry about what meals they would get that week.

“It was just a really nice gesture,” he said.

After graduation, he plans to stay in his hometown of Jackson and finish studying to become an electrician. One of his greatest accomplishments was completing his apprenticeship in high school, he said.

It wasn’t always the plan, but his mom recommended he look into a job at his family’s company. He ended up finding a passion for the trade.

“I just loved it,” he said. “I like that it’s always hands-on. I’m not a person that wants to be in an office all day.

“You also really have to use your brain in troubleshooting different things, which takes some time, but gets you satisfied when you do the job.”

Alison Burcham

Alison Burcham said every moment in high school has shown her she can do hard things. She’ll walk across the graduation stage knowing that if she doesn’t give up, it’ll all be worth it.

Along with many other activities like cake decorating in 4-H and serving as inclusion ambassador on the student council, Burcham has played on the girls basketball team since seventh grade. She experienced a three-year winning drought in high school until February of this year. For the first time, the girls’ basketball team earned a victory. Burcham said she felt the pressure and prevailed.

But she also learned that even when she doesn’t win, there’s always positives that come from an experience.

“The people I’ve connected with — every person that’s ever played sports with me or been my friends — they’ve always been such uplifting people,” she said. “Everybody has their own story, but everybody is willing to help others.”

She said she wouldn’t be where she is today without friends, family and Teton County School District staff pushing her. Burcham names her biggest supporters as her parents, though.

“Before I got my license, they would drive me to every single sports game, pick up me up from practice every single day,” she said. “I feel like without them, all the activities that I do, I wouldn’t be able to.”

Burcham is bound for BYU Idaho in the fall to study biology and health sciences.

Cooper Guild

When Cooper Guild received his letter for varsity football this year, he said it was his greatest accomplishment at Jackson Hole High School. He played defensive tackle for the Broncs.

“It felt good,” he said. “I felt like I was part of a bigger team and appreciated, because it was a long season. We put in a lot of work.”

Being on the road with the team for the season will stick with him forever. He was taught that even when times are tough, to keep his head down and push through it. He injured his ankle a few times playing on the team and overcame the challenge.

“Keep going because it’s only temporary,” Guild said. “All that stuff’s hard, but it’s just hard for a little while. If you can make it through that, then you’ll be happier in the end.”

After graduation, Guild is headed to Wyotech to study diesel mechanics. He’s interested in working on custom vehicles as a mechanic. He hopes to stay in Wyoming because of the easy access to the outdoors and snowmobiling, hunting and fishing.

Guild said he was surprised that it was already the end of senior year. He remembers being just a freshman.

“The days are long, but the years are short,” he said.

Portraits in education

Sayre Jorgenson

Sayre Jorgenson wants to be a part of the next generation of teachers. She plans to major in secondary education at the University of Wyoming and minor in Spanish. She earned a full ride scholarship and said she can’t wait to capitalize on taking as many classes as she wants and studying abroad.

For Jorgenson, fostering education in children is the blueprint for the world’s success.

“Knowledge is currency,” she said.

Jorgenson’s favorite class in high school was AP Biology and it’s no surprise that she wants to teach biology after she graduates from college. She said it’s a challenging field, but she was inspired by her teacher who she said puts a lot of time and energy into her students.

“I like biology because there’s always answers to every question,” she said.

One of the most memorable moments of her high school career was the pink-out senior night for the volleyball team. She used to be a lacrosse girl “through and through” in middle school, but after a growth spurt she started looking at other sports. She found her tribe in volleyball for the rest of high school and saying goodbye after winning their final game was bittersweet.

“It was a totally different group of people than I had ever known or hung out with,” she said. “I love being a part of a team. I already miss it.”

C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S

Evelyn Klein

Evelyn Klein went on a Devils Tower Climbing Club trip sophomore year of high school, where she found her group of people. She said nowadays students are constantly on their phones and this was the opportunity to put them down and really connect. Not only did the climbers enjoy their time outside on the rocks, but they were given art kits by one of their teachers to get creative when they weren’t on the ropes.

For the rest of her high school career, she stuck with Climbing Club and Mountaineering Club. She also found other ways to get outside and gain hands on experience.

“We have the mountains right there and everyone just wants to go play in the mountains,” she said. “People are pretty driven.”

Klein joined Venture Crew, a branch of the Scouts of America, and shadowed Teton County Search and Rescue. She also interned at the Sheriff’s Office and after getting a grasp on the departments, detention center and court, she eventually worked more with the canine unit.

She said she doesn’t think she would have gotten that kind of opportunity elsewhere.

Klein said she is proud of herself for being willing to try new things. When she decided to drop out of gymnastics before her junior year to climb more, she said it was hard to start over.

“Trying a lot of new things is hard, especially in this town, because it can seem kind of intimidating,” she said.

But she isn’t stopping. Klein will make her way to the mountains in Durango for the summer to climb and work before classes start at Fort Lewis College in the fall. She’ll study political science and hopes to eventually go into the criminal justice field.

Portraits in education

Hermione Cortes

Hermione Cortes said many people overlook the privilege of getting an education, especially one as special as in Jackson.

“In different places around the world, it’s not always the best,” she said. “Here in Jackson, there’s a lot of support that we get and a lot of opportunities that we get that not everyone does. I’m very grateful for everything that we’ve gotten.”

Cortes said she was especially proud of receiving a scholarship. It will help her pursue her next steps in education.

First, she’s going to work and attend The Paul Mitchell School to get her barbering license. She said then she can collect money to go to college and study social work. Psychology was her favorite class in high school even though it was the most difficult.

“I want to go into social work to eventually be able to become a therapist,” she said. She wants to support people through difficult times and help them express their emotions.

There will be many responsibilities to juggle along the journey. However, Cortes said she was able to learn what works best for her throughout high school. She said learning how to establish a routine was a vital skill in order to balance work and school to keep her grades up.

“That’s something that I think should be appreciated a lot more and focused on a lot more as students with teachers,” she said. “Trying to help them get that down.”

Jack Overbay

As a freshman on the track team, Jack Overbay looked up to the seniors for their skills. He set a goal to be just as amazing as them by the time he graduated. He never thought he could get to their level, but this year he realized he had worked hard enough to achieve the goal.

“The awe I felt then was a good push to get me to start working,” he said.

Overbay was also on the Model UN and cross-country teams throughout high school. He said crosscountry was favorite activity, because of both team environment and the coach who had a lasting impact on him. JHHS history teacher Jeff Brazil was also his AP World teacher and led Model UN.

“He was the reason that I started to change my work ethic into something more beneficial,” he said.

Overbay said this applied to both his effort in academics and athletics.

“I definitely would not be as successful as I am now, if it weren’t for his influence,” he said.

He’ll compete on the cross-country team at Bates College in Maine next year. He’s excited for the doors it will open and new opportunities. He reflected on what his parents told him, “We don’t want doors to be closed for you. We want you to close the doors.”

That’s why this next step is important to him.

Portraits in education

Lindsay Dufault

Abe Perez Hernandez

Abe Perez Hernandez said he wants other high schoolers to be sweet and openhearted to those around them. It was his biggest takeaway in his four years of volunteering in the community, serving on prom committee, working at the the candy store and Target, and tackling his classes.

He’ll take that kindness with him to the University of Wyoming campus. He’s going to major in education and hopes to return to Jackson to teach.

Perez Hernandez said he’d especially like to be at Munger Elementary because he speaks Spanish. Through the work-based learning program, he got the chance to work with current students at Munger two times a week.

“I didn’t even know what I was going to do until I took the class,” he said. “So it opened a lot of opportunities. It’s really beautiful.”

His education means everything to him.

“My mom came here from Mexico,” he said. “I want to complete my education so her little sacrifice doesn’t go wasted.”

Although Lindsay Dufault played on the girls’ soccer team, one of the memories that will stick with her most after high school was the night the girls’ basketball team won their first game in three years. The crowd full of seniors erupted and she said everyone was incredibly happy for the players.

“It was the most school spirit I feel like we’ve had in a really long time,” she said.

Dufault will head to the University of Virginia after graduation and plans to major in women and gender studies. She’s hoping to pursue her education even further at law school or graduate school, and has always embraced learning. One of her proudest achievements was keeping a 4.0 GPA all four years.

As a high school student interested in feminism and women’s rights, she said she understood how difficult it was for women to earn the right to go to school.

“It’s definitely made me want to keep on learning,” she said.

Last year, she took a capstone class and studied Title IX and how sexual assault is handled by schools. She connected with the Title IX coordinator for the district, as well as with teachers and counselors, to advocate for changing how schools address these issues for students.

“And how it can make it a safer place for all students,” Dufault said.

Dufault said never be afraid to show what you’re passionate about.

“I think a lot of people get embarrassed if they like to read or stuff like that,” she said. “But just trying new things if you’re interested in something or really pursuing it is super helpful.”
