I’m trying to wrestle a poem for your 70th about the painting you made me 15 years ago for my 60th how I’ve looked into its eyes again to remind me of its message

There’s a water-lily surrounded by a dark lake

a lily past her prime – bearing scars but retaining a certain beauty and if you stare into its depths you’ll see eyes – benign little eyes looking back at you eyes of little fishes. They’ll nourish you as long as you have eyes to see
