"TEN YEARS AGO, THE WORDS OF A RANDOM SLAM POET STIRRED MY SOUL. EVER SINCE, I HAVE DEVOURED EVERY BEAUTIFUL BOOK AND POEM I COULD FIND, DESPERATELY FALLING DEEPER IN LOVE WITH HUMANITY. THE HUMANITIES HAVE ENRICHED MY EVERYDAY EXPERIENCE AND HOPEFULLY, THEY WILL HELP ME CONNECT WITH MY PATIENTS ON A MORE REAL, HUMAN LEVEL."

"I AM AN M1 AT UACOMP. I CHOSE TO ATTEND THIS MEDICAL UNIVERSITY FOR A MULTITUDE OF REASONS, ONE OF THEM BEING THE OPPORTUNITY TO COMPLETE THE HEALTH HUMANITIES CERTIFICATE OF DISTINCTION. IN ADDITION TO PRACTICING AS A PHYSICIAN, I HOPE TO CONNECT WITH PATIENTS AND THE GENERAL POPULATION THROUGH RECORDING PATIENT HISTORIES IN NARRATIVE FORMAT. I AM SO THRILLED TO WORK ON THIS ADDENDUM TO MY DREAM CAREER WHILE IN MEDICAL SCHOOL."
-NAUSHABA KHAN, MS1
"I'M FROM PHOENIX, ARIZONA AND MY PASSIONS ARE AT THE INTERSECTION OF PATIENT CARE, HEALTH HUMANITIES, AND RESEARCH. I HAVE A BACKGROUND IN JOURNALISM AND CONSTANTLY FIND MYSELF DRAWING ON MY REPORTING SKILLS WHEN CARING FOR AND LISTENING TO PATIENTS SO THAT I KNOW HOW BEST I CAN ADVOCATE FOR THEM."

Virtual Ethics Coffee Hour
In response to students’ requests for more time to discuss bioethical issues the virtual ethics coffee hour opened in March 2021. The goal of the virtual ethics coffee hour is to provide a safe space for informal conversation around the field of bioethics allowing for thoughtful discussion on current topics. The drop-in format allows students to have a focused conversation to hear from their peers as well as facilitator or guest facilitator various perspectives to address bioethical issues related to the practice of becoming a physician.
The Ethics Coffee Hour is held the first Tuesday of every month beginning at 5:00 p.m. except July or January. Topics for March revolved around patient/physician autonomy. In April as part of Global Health Day, the discussion will focus on global distribution of the vaccine. Topics are open to student input. All COM-P students are welcome to drop-in, join the conversation and to suggest topics.
For more information please contact Dr. Fehsenfeld fehsenfelde@arizona.edu or to sign up for the next Ethics Coffee Hour. Please grab a mug of coffee, tea, or beverage of your choice and join us on Tuesday, April 6 at 5:00 p.m.
