Songs in Spanglish

When I first heard Camila Cabello’s song, “La Buena Vida”, I could not wrap my head around it. I wanted to like it, but something felt so wrong and off.

I think maybe I was battling this preposition that I’ve been hearing since I was a little girl which was “Don’t mix your spanish and your bY jULISSA hERNANDEZ english”. I was told that speaking in both languages in the same sentence sounded unsophisticated, mis-structured, and uncultivated.

My problem with La Buena Vida was that it has a tejano/spanish sound with English lyrics.

The Tejano genre is already a mix of Mexican and Texan/ U.S. sounds, but I have been listening to Tejano music since I was little with my family or at parties and I had never heard it in English.

Selena Quintanilla, a famous tejano singer, sang ‘Enamorada De Ti” was meant to have a familiar sound base from Tejano music but the label wanted the band to be flexible with a sound that they “What recourse is left to th could make in Spanish but also translate to English. Yes, I am aware other hits like Shakira, Pitbull, etc., have mixed English and Spanish and this isn’t a new thing but for me, those versions either came in English or Spanish. It was rare when both English and Spanish verses were together on a song on purpose, one language taking up as much space as the other.

Since 2021 I have been looking for artists who sing in Spanglish trusting that their intended audience, like me, will understand what they are singing in both languages without any “English Version” or “Spanish Version”.

Sometimes when a song in Spanish was a great hit by an amazing musical artist, they changed it to English, and vice versa, to help broaden the spectrum of listeners.

Don’t get me wrong, I like English and Spanish versions because I think they bring a variety of ways to sing and interpret a song; but Spanglish songs feel like a love letter from an artist to me- to our community of people who feel the way we do. It’s an embracement of ‘los dos lados’. It’s saying, “I am both Spanish and English and that doesn’t cut me in half, it makes me whole”. We are whole. I am happy to support a musician who does songs in English, songs in Spanish, songs in Spanglish and is ultimately proud of who they are and all their in-betweens. It makes me want to embrace mine.

Not to mention, there’s just more to go around. Sometimes there’s a saying in Spanish that just makes perfecr sense in Spanish and at the same time some verses can feel right in English. Why change that? It’s not about being misstructured or uncultivated because when it comes to art, our purpose to bring all of ourselves.

Anyway, I’m happy to report that I absolutely love La Buena Vida, Telepatia, along with many more, so I thought it would be fun to make a playlist consisting of more artists who make bilingual music like Maria Isabel, Niko Rubio, Boy Pablo, etc.
