2019 was a very successful year for the Hancock Health Foundation, and we began 2020 with aspirations to build on that success. I am pleased to report that we were very successful, despite the world changing COVID-19 that affected the Hospital, the Foundation, all of the staff, and every member of our community.

By March 2020, we were all sheltering in place, the Hospital was closed to visitors, all meetings were being held, if at all, via Zoom, and whether we wanted to or not, we learned the technology to stay connected. Our Hancock Health Foundation staff were deployed to help out in many different ways such as coordinating donations of PPE and meals for staff, and our executive director, Nancy Davis, shared responsibility for rolling out the COVID vaccination program for Hancock Health.

Plans for an in-person golf outing and an in-person Women Helping Women fundraiser were shelved, and we had to be creative with fundraising. No golf outing was held, but a plan to provide golfing vouchers was born, and this alternative golf benefit raised an amazing $21,000.

The Women Helping Women committee did not fill baskets with wonderful goods and services to be auctioned off. Instead, it conducted an online fundraising event over a period of two weeks and raised $87,000! Uninsured and underinsured women and men in our community will benefit from this initiative.

We also provided nursing and other healthcare scholarships to 25 students in the amount of $57,000.

We are excited to watch these students earn their degrees and perhaps begin serving our community.

As we do each year, we awarded the Bert Curry and Bobby Keen Healthy Community Awards to an individual and an organization for exemplary and innovative service to create positive change in the health and wellness of our community. The winner of the Bert Curry Award was Gina Colclazier who has served the community in the area of addiction recovery and mental health through her position as Director of Counseling and Executive Director of the Wellspring Center at Brandywine Community Church. The Bobby Keen Award was granted to Brianna’s Hope of Greenfield. This new organization made a significant impact in a short time helping those who battle addiction. Congratulations to these worthy recipients.

To all of you who help support these programs and initiatives, thank you. To our amazing Hancock Health Foundation staff, thank you, and to our entire community, thank you. I know that 2021 will bring even more challenges, but the Hancock Health Foundation is ready to meet them head on.

What is so remarkable is that both of these events raised significant funds to support Hancock Health in a time of great uncertainty and need in the community. I have noticed that other non-profits, too, have been well supported during 2020. Our community is so generous, and we thank each of you for your support.

We continued work on our Endowment Campaign to fund mental health and substance use treatment.

Even though other issues took center stage and Foundation staff were diverted to other tasks, we raised nearly $900,000 for these programs in 2020 in gifts and pledges and have raised a total of $1.6 million since the start of this campaign. We are confident that we will continue to grow this fund and meet our objective of $3.5 million. We have all seen the need for mental health services rise during quarantine and social distancing. Our Endowment will go a long way to help address those issues.

DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL The Development Council is a volunteer network of community and business leaders working to increase ongoing community and financial support for the Hancock Health Foundation. stronger together HOW THE COMMUNITY STEPPED UP TO SUPPORT THE HOSPITAL

As the COVID-19 pandemic struck the world in early 2020, Hancock Health stepped up to treat members of our community infected with the virus and to help stop the spread as much as possible. During this unprecedented year, the Foundation was tasked with some new roles beyond its traditional fundraising efforts. Individuals and businesses, at the local, state and national level, reached out to provide assistance and support in a variety of ways. Donations of medical-grade personal protective equipment, handmade face masks, meals and cards poured in to help protect, nourish and encourage healthcare workers during this extremely challenging time. It would be nearly impossible to recognize everyone who supported the hospital’s work against COVID in 2020, but the following pictures illustrate how the community came together to strengthen our efforts as we fought the pandemic.

This year brought many challenges to our organization, including the task of holding virtual events to replace those we would typically have in-person. For our golf benefit, a safe solution was fairly simple: provide opportunities for individuals to play golf on their own while supporting the foundation. We were thrilled and grateful that so many of our regular golfers, donors and sponsors supported our fundraising efforts despite the different format. Golfers played at Hawks Tail in Greenfield, Royal Hylands in Knightstown and Plum Creek Golf Club in Carmel at their convenience throughout the summer. In total, over $21,000 was raised to support mental health and substance use treatment in our community. Please see the list of sponsors to the right. Thank you to everyone who supported our golf benefit!

IT’S TIME TO OPEN UP ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE IN HANCOCK COUNTY. While so much has changed over the past year, one thing has not: the need for mental health and substance use treatment. In fact, we’ve seen an increased need for these services in 2020 as people struggle with more stress, anxiety, depression, isolation, financial challenges and substance abuse, among other things.

While the Foundation had to shift its focus to support the hospital in its efforts to fight COVID, we have not lost sight of our campaign or the growing need for these services. Many individuals and local businesses have shown their commitment to helping fill this need by making donations to our campaign since its launch in January 2020. To date, we have raised $1.6 million thanks to the generosity of this community! These funds have enabled Hancock Health to begin expanding its mental health and substance use treatment services. Here you’ll find updates on these programs and one of many real-life success stories from individuals in our community who have received the help they need.

CAMPAIGN GOALS

PROGRAM UPDATE

Add ten licensed clinical social workers and other staff including a new psychiatrist and psychiatric nurse practitioner, to reduce wait times and increase capacity for individual and group therapy.

Two new social workers have been hired and two positions are currently in the process of being filled.

Hire two recovery and mental healthfocused navigators to help patients and families choose treatment options, identify and overcome barriers and stay on a path to wellness.

Healthy365 navigators, Jessica Abraham and Teri House-Gottschalk, worked with more than 150 patients in 2020.

As we work toward helping patients with substance use disorders, we continue on a path that embraces an inclusive approach merging counseling and behavioral therapy in combination with Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT). MAT is the use of medication in the treatment of opioid dependence.

These services are in the building phase and are projected to be live in 2021

Develop youth programs, including school-based prevention and early intervention and treatment services.

Healthy365 has hosted five Rise Above It events, which aim to change perceptions and reduce stigma about mental health struggles. These events have been held in-person and virtually in Hancock County schools and beyond.

We appreciate your support of our alternative golf benefit since we were not able to host a traditional outing this year. Your donations will support much-needed mental health and substance use treatment programs in our community.

While there is no doubt that these programs are making a big impact already, we still have a long way to go to meet the growing need in our community.

We have helped to establish Bring Change to Mind clubs in three of the four county school districts. These clubs empower students to educate one another about mental health and to create a culture of peer support within their schools.

The healthy365 team has trained 1,600 people in QPR- suicide prevention training- of which 794 are Hancock County school staff.

Hancock Counseling & Psychiatry provides counseling services to two of the four high schools in the county.

The negative impact of COVID-19 is far and wide, and Hancock Health has been hit hard losing millions of dollars in revenue. We also know that the pandemic has caused many financial challenges for those who are low income or without health insurance. Unfortunately, this has caused people to put their health needs on hold, especially when it comes to their mental health. Treatment for mental health and substance use is already drastically under funded by insurance companies. Things like navigation services, which are so critical to successful care, are not covered at all, yet we provide them to our patients free of charge.

For all these reasons, additional support from the community is critical in allowing us to continue expanding these programs, reach our goals for the campaign and sustain these services for the future. Donations to this campaign will go into an endowment to ensure the financial stability of this program.

WOMEN HELPING WOMEN WENT VIRTUAL IN 2020!

Thanks to our dedicated supporters, it was no less successful than previous years!

We utilized social media, email and peer-topeer fundraising to reach donors virtually when we couldn’t be together in-person.

Our Pink Warriors- a group of 26 community members who set their own personal fundraising goals- helped us expand our reach by asking their own friends and family to make donations.

We shared videos about Women Helping Women that included the history of the program, information about the services we provide and testimonials from patients. We also asked some of our former speakers and other breast cancer survivors to share their own stories by recording videos for us that we then shared through email and social media. Sharing our stories virtually allowed us to reach many more people, individuals who don’t live nearby and could never attend a WHW event in person.

Overall, we attribute the success of this event to the dedication of Women Helping Women donors to the cause and the generosity of our community. Through donations and sponsorships, the net total raised for Women Helping Women was over $87,000!

This was a crucial year for our women’s clinic as they saw a significant decrease in other funding sources due to the health and economic crisis presented by COVID. The pandemic has been difficult for everyone, especially those who are low income and/or without health insurance, so it has become increasingly important that our clinic is here to serve individuals in our community who cannot afford their mammograms and other health services.

Thanks to the hard work of our Pink Warriors, and the generosity of Women Helping Women donors, our women’s clinic will have a secure stream of funding for the coming year. These gifts allow them to continue their incredible work serving the women of our community and saving lives.

CLIENT TESTIMONY: Jane* has a long history of mental health and substance use challenges. She has been sober for four years, but was struggling with high levels of anxiety, parenting and marriage difficulties. Jane attempted to seek help with three other organizations and was unsuccessful. When she learned about Healthy365 and called a Navigator, she was almost to the point of crisis. Our Navigator provided an empathetic ear and was able to assist her in getting a counseling appointment for the next day, helped her obtain insurance, get started on medication, and got her connected with a new family doctor. Jane states “I have been searching for help for the last 4-5 years. I’ve had overwhelming anxiety and did not know what to do.

Director, the Bert Curry Healthy Community Award is given each year to an individual for exemplary and innovative efforts to create positive change in the health of our community. Gina Colclazier has a long history of serving our community and creating positive change in the areas of addiction recovery and mental health through her position as Director of Counseling and Recovery and Executive Director of Wellspring Center at Brandywine Community Church. Wellspring Center is a community program that provides resources and support for those who have a mental illness or love someone with a mental illness.

In 2007, Gina was part of the team that brought Celebrate Recovery (CR) to this community. This is a faith-based 12-step program that is free and open to anyone, regardless of their beliefs. Over the last 12 years, more than 4,500 people have participated in the program. She also led the launch of Recovery Zone for Kids, a whole-family program where parents and children can find hope and change together. Gina was nominated by Joan Wilson, who said, “The common thread in these programs is the passion and innovation of Gina Colclazier. She has a desire to bring hope and healing to those who are hurting and the rare ability to not only create the vision but build a team, develop a curriculum and lead the work necessary to make the vision a reality.” Gina received a $1,000 donation to the non-profit of her choice with this award and has chosen for it to support Wellspring Center at Brandywine Community Church.

Through this award, the Hancock Health Foundation recognizes a hospital program or local organization of our local communities. The 2020 recipient of the Bobby Keen Healthy Community Award is Brianna’s Hope of Greenfield.

The mission of Brianna’s Hope is “providing hope to individuals and communities battling addiction using support, encouragement and collaboration.” The leadership of the Greenfield Brianna’s Hope Chapter, known as Team Hope, have volunteered over 2, 750 hours back into the Hancock County Community. They have assisted 23 individuals to rehabilitation without requesting financial assistance from the individual or their families.

They have hosted 14 community events to spread awareness regarding recovery and substance use disorder and assisted 30 individuals with job placement and career posts during and through their recovery and many work in Hancock County. They have become a “model chapter” of A Better Life and have helped sponsor chapters in many other communities around the state. They have a goal to bring a new chapter of A Better Life- Brianna’s Hope to every county in Indiana by 2022. Brianna’s Hope of Greenfield will receive a donation of $1,000 in recognition of this award to help support the program.

Other nominees for the Bobby Keen Healthy Community Award include Healthy365, Hancock County CASA and the Hancock Wellness Physician Referral Program.

Nominees for the Bert Curry Healthy Community Award include Bridget Foy, Katie Molinder and Erin Flick. All of this year’s nominees are wonderful examples of people working together to make a positive change in the health of our community.
