Does Redskins decision signal change in OK? They say change in slow in D.C. And this was no exception.

But on Monday morning, the news many thought would never materialize hit the wire as the NFL team in Washington officially announced it would be ditching the Redskins monicker.

Now, there is still the matter of trademarking a new team name, would could get complicated, as a man in Virginia has already shrewdly trademarked 44 potential new names for the team. But in the meantime, this represents a milestone for those who have, for years, called for the abandonment of team nicknames they deemed offensive.

GLEN And while there BROCKENBUSH remain discussions SPORTS EDITOR about teams like the Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves and Chicago Blackhawks, my mind went a little closer to our neck of the woods. After all, roughly 13 percent of Oklahomans are at least partially American Indian, so the topic would be considered fairly pertinent in the state.

In a large skillet, cook sausage over medium heat until no longer pink. Add the potatoes, onion, green pepper, salt and pepper. Cook over medium-high heat for 18-20 minutes or until the potatoes are browned.

Stir in mushrooms. Pour eggs over the potato mixture. Arrange tomato slices on top. Sprinkle with cheese.

Cover and cook over medium-low heat for 10-15 minutes or until eggs are completely set (do not stir).

Serve with salsa and sour cream.

Muldrow Man runs roadblock while trying to elude officers AMIE REMER EDITOR

A Muldrow man who reportedly ran numerous stop signs at speeds of up to 98 mph while allegedly trying to elude a Muldrow Police Officer has now been charged in Sequoyah County District Court.

John L. Hamilton, 23,

was formally charged on Sept. 1 with felony counts of endangering others while eluding/attempting to elude police officers, running a roadblock and two counts of possession of controlled dangerous substance, and a criminal misdemeanor count of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. He

Jackie Plank, Sr. Vice President for VFW Auxiliary Post 8384 said Voice of Democracy is open to students from grades ninth through 12th and is a speech recorded on a CD or audio flash drive 3 to 5 minutes in length.

In a press conference Tuesday, Gov. Kevin Stitt created a “Safer at Home” order for “vulnerable populations” until April 30, and ordered the closure of “non-essential businesses” in the 19 counties with confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 for 21 days.

The order to stay home is for all Oklahomans who may be more vulnerable to COVID-19

such as older people, people with underlying conditions or those immunocompromised.

They would still be allowed to go to places like grocery stores and pharmacies.

The business closures would include Payne County and surrounding Logan, Noble and Pawnee counties. Stitt said the difference between essential and non-essential businesses is based on federal guidelines, but highlighted closure See Expanded, Page A2

WASHINGTON – The Trail of Tears, the forced removal of the Cherokee Nation to Oklahoma, was one of the most inhumane policy implementations in American history – but it was not an isolated incident.

Nearly 16,000 members of the Cherokee Nation were forced under armed guard in 1831 to leave their native homeland in the southeastern United States to trek more than a thousand miles to what would eventually become the state of Oklahoma.

Almost 4,000 Cherokees died along the way, never making it to the land designated by the U.S. government as Indian Territory.

Long before the removal period, the federal government believed white people could use

the Native lands better than the original inhabitants. This “Indian problem” motivated settlers to strip Native people of their land and resources, constantly pushing tribal members farther west.
