From the Sweet Sounds 2023 Co-Chairs We are deeply honored to serve as co-chairs of a remarkable event, Sweet Sounds 2023: Honoring 20 Years of B’nei Mitzvah. This is a momentous occasion for Gateways, as we are celebrating two decades of an extraordinary journey that has touched the lives of countless children and families, not least our own.

Your support is a testament to the remarkable community that has developed around this incredible program, a community that has been pivotal in fostering inclusion, understanding, and the celebration of diversity within our Jewish traditions.

The B’nei Mitzvah Program has not only transformed the lives of over 100 young individuals with disabilities and diverse learning needs, but it has also enriched the lives of their families and the communities in which they live. The program represents more than just a milestone in a young person’s life; it is a beacon of hope, a symbol of acceptance, and a vehicle for all to participate in our Jewish community meaningfully. As co-chairs, we are immensely grateful for the incredible support that Gateways has provided to our families.

Today, we celebrate not only 20 years of the B’nei Mitzvah Program but also the endless opportunities for engagement with the greater Jewish community now open to families like ours. Together, we can continue to provide every child with the chance to not only experience the joy of b’nei mitzvah, regardless of their abilities or support needs, but to enter the next phase of their Jewish communal lives. Through showing up and championing this program and this cause, we reaffirm our collective commitment to inclusivity and the enduring strength of our Jewish community.

About Our Co-Chairs Estelle & Guy Gomolka PARENTS TO SARA ‘07

Estelle and Guy have lived in Newton for the past 35 years. They have two children, Sarah, 29 and Jonathan, 26, and are members of Temple Emanuel in Newton. Estelle has been an Elementary School Teacher for the past 39 years, and the Waterfront Director of Camp Yavneh for the past 48 summers. The Gomolkas were first drawn to Gateways as a place for their daughter, Sarah, to interact with other Jewish children and become part of the Jewish community. They credit Gateways with helping them embrace differences among all families and accept people for who they are. Estelle and Guy are honored to be part of the 100 Gateways B’nei Mitzvah families.

Michelle & Ronald Herzlinger PARENTS TO JULIA ‘17

The Herzlingers moved to Boston 10 years ago seeking medical care and both secular and Jewish educational opportunities for their children. Gateways opened a world of Jewish education and learning for their daughter, Julia. Michelle and Ronald cherished Julia’s Bat Mitzvah with Gateways, which included a tactile siddur and chumash specially created by her Teen Volunteers. They delighted in the joyful celebration of their family, friends, and the entire Gateways community in honor of Julia and her special milestone.

Carla & Alexis Kopikis PARENTS TO ADAR ‘23

Carla and Alexis are proud parents to twins, Adar and Dahlia. Adar became Bar Mitzvah with Gateways this past January and continues his Jewish learning through virtual tutoring sessions mid-week and in person each Sunday (this September marks his 8th year!). Adar loves practicing and learning new tefillot with his student volunteers and teachers. He has made long-lasting connections through Gateways.

Linda & Harold Simansky PARENTS TO ETHAN ‘21

Linda and Harold are the parents of three boys, Aaron, Jacob, and Ethan. Ethan has been happily attending the Gateways Sunday program for many years and is currently an active participant in the Gateways Mitzvah Menches program. Ethan has loved his amazing teen volunteers and became a Bar Mitzvah with Gateways two years ago. To this day, friends and family continue to delight in the joy and meaning of that day.
