Dear Gateways Friends, With each Annual Report comes a sense of both pride and gratitude. In this moment, those feelings are especially heightened as we present you with the story of our achievements in 2022-2023. In some ways, last year was a breath of fresh air, returning fully to in-person programming in a “post-Covid” era and relishing the prospect of a more predictable and hopeful future. Yet, even with a regained sense of normalcy and routine, none of us was prepared for a full-blown attack on the Jewish people just over 100 days ago.

These last few months have tested the very core of our Jewish identities. And yet, Jews everywhere have shown what a strong and resilient people we truly are. We reacted quickly, performing countless and continuous acts of volunteerism, bravery, and solidarity.

Indeed, we are in awe of what the Gateways staff has been able to do to meet the heightened needs in our community, particularly in the immediate aftermath of the horrific acts of October 7. By offering drop-in support groups for parents and educators struggling with the news in Israel, authoring articles on how to talk about Israel with children with mental health needs and neurodevelopmental disabilities, planning sessions for our teen volunteers with Israel experts and mental health specialists, and so much more, Gateways has risen to the occasion during a tragic and challenging time.

At the same time, we are deeply committed to carrying out our core work every day. Our staff serves hundreds of students across Boston-area day schools, manages growing interest in our near capacity standalone Hebrew school program, and provides numerous workshops for educators and parents/caregivers. In the midst of ongoing suffering across the globe, we remained steadfast, honoring 100 Gateways B’nei Mitzvah Program alumni and their families at our Sweet Sounds event in November 2023. The events of these past few months have made it feel more vital than ever before for us to adhere to our core purpose of embracing every family into the Jewish tradition of B'nei Mitzvah; of preserving the eternality of the Jewish people.

Gateways continues to seek more ways to support the children and teens who are the future of the Jewish people. We are hard at work on initiatives to expand our dynamic day school and B’nei Mitzvah Programs as we remain determined to ensure our fiscal sustainability and broaden our reach to more communities, more families, and more children across the country.

Our mission to create an inclusive Jewish community where all children and teens belong is what gives us hope for the future of our people. We couldn’t do this without YOU – without your support, your leadership, your partnership, and truly, your friendship. Thank you for being part of our Gateways family.

Educator Spotlight: Naomi Dreyer Teacher, Jewish Education Programs Naomi Dreyer’s interest in Jewish special education began all the way back in kindergarten. Her family had moved to Israel for the year, and when she returned to her American Jewish day school, she struggled to learn how to read and write in English. “I found that I wasn't getting enough support in school, and my parents had to find private tutoring to get me the support that I needed. And that absence of support in the Jewish world really stuck with me for a very long time,” says Naomi. These experiences, along with a love for working with kids, were what led Naomi to pursue her master’s degree in special and elementary education, and eventually to join the faculty team at Gateways Jewish Education Programs.

In her role teaching Jewish students with disabilities and diverse learning needs, Naomi takes care to modify the curriculum to meet every student. “At Gateways, with any activity that I do, I try to create two or three different levels of differentiation, so that any kid no matter what their ability or disability can still access it.”

Naomi is an exceptional educator and is always looking for new and innovative ways to meet the needs of all her students. She has developed amazing curricular resources that not only benefit students in the Gateways program but have also been shared with other adaptive Jewish education programs to help their educators make Jewish learning accessible.

4 1 At the same time, Naomi wants to make sure that her classroom creates a cohesive and social Jewish community for her students. Naomi begins every class with circle time to welcome and ground everyone, saying, “It's important to give the kids opportunities to socialize with each other, especially since students who attend public schools during the week may not have other chances to interact and connect with other Jewish kids.” Naomi has seen firsthand the difference that instilling a sense of Jewish belonging makes in her students. She mentions a student who used to avoid group settings and interacting with classmates. “Over the last three years, with very attentive support and some great teen volunteers, that student has been able to build friendships with other students in the class. And we know now that they have playdates together outside of Gateways,” she says proudly.

For some kids, learning is not the joy that it is for others. It’s important as an educator to realize that and to be empathetic to it and to say to them, ‘if this is hard or you have trouble, it's okay, but you can do it. And I'm right here with you every step of the way.’

~ Naomi Dreyer Over the past six years at Gateways, Naomi has had the joy of watching her students develop and flourish both socially and Jewishly, as many begin their Gateways journey in our elementary-age programs and continue through the B’nei Mitzvah Program and our teen social action class. She reflects, “I think a lot of these students have been written off by other people, and time after time, they just prove everybody wrong. They are really able to rise to the occasion and have deep thoughts and questions about what it means to be Jewish.”

When asked about her hopes for her students in terms of where they’ll see themselves in the Jewish community because of Gateways, Naomi puts it simply: “However much they want to be a part of the Jewish community or not, wherever they want to be, they’ll be empowered to be there.”

Program Spotlight: Shiluv Peer Disability Education Shiluv (which means inclusion in Hebrew), Gateways’ own emerging Peer Disability Education Program, kicked off in 2023 at several Boston-area Jewish institutions, bringing in compelling, experiential programming to foster a culture of respect and appreciation of learning, physical, and developmental differences. Shiluv is available for all Jewish educational settings, including day schools and supplementary religious schools.

Classroom Lessons Right: As part of a lesson on Autism, fifth graders learn about the story of prominent academic and speaker Dr. Temple Grandin and discuss connections to Jewish texts and values.

Initiative Spotlight: Mental Health

Expanding What “Inclusion” Means Sweet Sounds 2022, co-chaired by Danya Handelsman, Nora Friedman, and Sharon Ruderman Shapiro (all pictured above from left to right with Tamar) was a celebration of Gateways’ Mental Health Initiative and the opportunities it has opened – allowing so many more children and families facing mental health challenges to fully participate in Jewish life and learning. Over the past few years, we have expanded what it means to promote Jewish inclusion, working from our long-standing partnerships with local educators and organizations to connect children, parents, community leaders, and educators with mental health services and education. Mental wellbeing is an essential part of every student’s success. Thus, by weaving mental health supports into our tapestry of Jewish inclusion, Gateways is embracing what it means to support the whole child.

Ali Shwartz (below) joined the Gateways team in fall 2023 as our new Mental Health Specialist. Ali has been instrumental in the design and implementation of a wide variety of programs throughout our community (see right), and was integral in coordinating Gateways’ swift expansion of our mental health offerings in the wake of the October 7th attacks in Israel.

Outreach After October 7th Monday after the attack, I reached out to colleagues in the Jewish world...to ask if they would be interested in joining together to provide drop-in support for parents and educators. Within an hour, I had replies from multiple individuals in each organization, offering to donate their time. By the day of the drop-ins, we had secured both Hebrew- and English-speaking clinicians from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. We had individuals join us from Massachusetts, California, New York, Chicago and Florida. It is truly remarkable to witness the collective efforts of Jewish mental health providers who have rallied together during this exceptionally challenging period.
