a brief history What started as a hobby for founder Elaine Kim Smith in 2008, is now Lover’s Tempo: a jewelry brand positioned in over 500 retailers worldwide. While collaborating with marketing consultant Leslie Hoolaeff in 2014, the pair bonded over a passion for creativity and entrepreneurial values. Realizing they shared a common vision for the future of Lover’s Tempo, they decided to partner in 2017 to scale the brand to new heights. Today, a team of women bring individuality and enthusiasm to every detail it takes to continue to build the brand.
our unique design perspective With a background in Art History and Fine Arts, Elaine Kim Smith is inspired by great design from various disciplines. Elaine explains that jewelry is a game of millimeters - a beautiful piece is a sum of all of it’s tiny parts. Her design principles are clean lines, a sophisticated color palette, thoughtful textures with just the right amount of delicate detailing. Beyond the jewelry, all of the brand creative is curated through Elaine’s artful eye. Every detail from our photography to our packaging is designed with the goal of delighting the customer. While prioritizing a sense of elevated style through our designs and brand experience, we ensure our prices are carefully considered. Elaine strongly believes that great design should be an everyday experience.

The fulfilment that Elaine and Leslie experience running their business together led them to start the Lover’s Tempo Grant program in 2019. The program offers mentorship and a $500 grant to other female entreprenuers to help them grow their business.

Our inaugural grant went to Beam Paints, headed by artist and paintmaker Anong Beam. Beam Paints is the result of a multi generational love of pigment, paint, colour, and innovation. Anong creates handmade, high-quality watercolours and wild foraged inks using her personal experience in indigenous pigment. Their watercolour pans are packaged in slices of cedar and birch that are offcuts from an indigenous sustainable lumber operation, making their packaging completely plastic-free. “I am so thrilled and excited to be chosen by Lover’s Tempo, their grant will help my business expand and grow! Their support and mentor ship comes at a crucial time and I look forward immensely to learning from them!”

In Spring 2020 we were delighted to announce the second winner of our grant. Brittany Trafford is the mind behind Wrappr, a no-waste alternative to gift wrapping. Their reusable product is made out of recycled materials while also being organic and biodegradable. The artwork is curated by their talented team of graphic designers and chosen based on its versatility for multiple occasions and celebrations. “I feel like this mentorship is becoming a part of my journey at a perfect time, it’s very motivating to have someone to talk to and I’m excited to speak again.”

Jewelry Care Included with each wholesale order is a small stack of our jewelry care cards. These cards explain how to take take a few simple precautions to increase the longevity of each purchase. Avoid Moisture When wearing your jewelry avoid contact with water, sweat, soap, lotions, oils, and perfumes. These products can create buildup on your jewelry that can tarnish your pieces prematurely. If your jewelry does come in contact with moisture, use a soft cloth to wipe it down. Minimize Wear + Tear Your jewelry should be the last thing you put on in the morning (after makeup, hair products and perfume) and the first thing you take off at night. We don’t recommend wearing your jewelry to bed. Store Safely When you remove your jewelry wipe it with a soft cloth. Keep your jewelry in a sealed bag or a jewelry box to help prevent tarnishing. Exposure to oxygen accelerates the aging process. For all of our online orders we now include the perfect pouch to keep and clean your jewels. Tending to your pieces requires little effort and should fit seamlessly into your everyday routine. A little care goes a long way.
Materials Reference GOLD-PLATED All of our jewelry is electroplated (“plated” for short). Electroplating is a process that uses chemistry and electricity to cover metal in a thin layer of gold. By dipping the jewelry in a solution that contains gold and applying electricity, a thin layer of gold attaches itself to the jewelry pieces. The overall colour/tone of the gold jewelry is determined by how long the process is applied. Different trends and designs dictate the tone of our gold-plating from 10K-18K gold. The trend today is a lighter gold, so we currently strive for a 10K-14K gold look. Since electroplating is done by hand, there may be slight variations each time this process is done. SILVER-PLATED We use the same electroplating process on our silver-plated jewelry except that silver is used in the chemical solution, instead of gold. Please see “GOLD-PLATED” for details on the electroplating process. RHODIUM-PLATED Rhodium is a precious metal and a member of the platinum family. Rhodium is a high-shine metal that gives pieces a cooler tone as opposed to silver-plated pieces which have a slightly warmer look. The same process for electroplating is used for our rhodium-plated pieces. Please see “GOLD-PLATED” for details on the electroplating process. STERLING SILVER POSTS Sterling silver is an alloy containing 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper.

BRASS Brass is an alloy made of copper and zinc. Brass is durable and quite workable. We use brass in a large selection of our jewelry. BASE METAL Base metals are any metals that are commonly found and considered the opposite of precious metals (gold, silver, palladium and platinum). Some examples of base metals include copper, zinc, nickel and aluminum. Base metals allow us to get creative and design truly unique pieces while making our jewelry accessible. CHAINS We use brass chains in a number of different finishes. Our most commonly used finishes are: Gold-plated Rhodium-plated Bronze-plated Enamel coated SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS CRYSTALS Swarovski Crystals are known for their exceptional brilliance and intense luminosity. We use loose Swarovski Crystal flatbacks that have platinum foiling for extra radiance and protection. CUBIC ZIRCONIA Cubic zirconia is a man-made gemstone that is normally used to replicate the look of diamonds. Although not as precious, we think that cubic zirconias are beautiful and great to work with because they are strong and virtually flawless. Also, while naturally colourless, cubic zirconia now comes in a rainbow of colours when different trace minerals are added during the manufacturing process. CELLULOSE ACETATE Cellulose acetate is a recyclable bioplastic made by taking the cellulose fibers from wood pulp. Starting as a clear paste, colour can be added and then it is molded into various shapes. This material has recently made a huge resurgence in jewelry and allows for a range of playful, vibrant components that imitate natural materials, such as tortoise shell or bone. GEMSTONES Gemstones are a range of mineral crystals, rocks and organic materials (ie. pearls) that are cut, polished and formed to make jewelry. We use a range of gemstones, most commonly, labradorite, quartz, shell and pearl. CRYSTAL BEADS Along with Swarovski Crystal flatbacks, we use chinese crystal beads in an array of shapes, colours and sizes. Chinese crystals are machine cut for the sharpest angles that reflect light and result in a radiant sparkle.
