That’s why bestsellers are strategically placed in what we call the “Strike Zone.” The strike zone is the area directly in front of the picker, around waist-high. Picking items from this area doesn’t require bending, lifting, turning or reaching overhead. Avoiding those movements is not only time-saving but it keeps the pickers safe by reducing repetitive or difficult motion. (Slower selling items go closer to ground level or on the highest shelves.) There are tons of other little interventions too, like cushy mats underfoot, maximum stacking heights and carefully placed cute dogs. We want this team to kick ass and stay safe!

AID GIVING AT BLUE Q
We know even small companies like ours can make a big difference, and that’s why Blue Q proudly contributes 1% of sales from our best-selling categories to organizations that further the good work we believe in. That’s 1% of sales, not profits, by the way. In fact, it’s built right into our costing sheet. At this point, we won’t make something without considering its charitable impact.
Of course, we don’t want to be limited to one fight, when there are so many worthy causes out there. So we spread the love around to support humanitarian aid, environmental initiatives and social justice efforts around the globe. All three are equally important, not just to the world, but to Blue Q as an engaged and compassionate company.
That said, money isn’t everything. It’s important to us to form sincere, ongoing relationships with the organizations we support. Many times we’ve benefited from presentations with Doctors Without Borders’ field workers who inspire our staff and invigorate our efforts. And we get out there and help our local groups — The Housatonic Valley Association, Habitat for Humanity or our local humane society, to name a few — by participating in community initiatives like block parties, soap box derbies and clean-up projects.
Our hope is that, as we do our part to support these critical causes, we inspire customers and even other businesses to follow suit. Because nobody can do it alone, but if we all join in the effort we can make some real change.

One percent of the sales of Blue Q Notebooks, Catnip Cat Toys and Pocket Boxes is donated directly to social justice causes. Recipients include the Transgender Law Center and the Southern Poverty Law Center, as well as local groups such as the Boys & Girls Club of the Berkshires and Rights of Passage and Empowerment (ROPE), a mentoring program for young women of color and individuals identifying as female or non-binary.
In addition to these ongoing donations, Blue Q has contributed funds, supplies and time to a number of hardworking, locally based organizations including West Side Legends, which is working to reinvigorate Pittsfield’s racially diverse West Side neighborhood, Central Berkshire Habitat for Humanity and the Elizabeth Freeman Center, a local domestic abuse treatment center.

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) provides medical assistance to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters or exclusion from health care in more than 70 countries around the world.

Back in 2017 we commissioned Andrew LaPatin to draw a comic book-style mural for our warehouse. It still hangs there today. We all loved having him around so much, we never wanted him to leave. Lucky for us, he loved it here too. The warehouse happens to be a great studio space for him to work in. So he’s been here ever since, working on whatever projects he wishes. It’s so nice when people just sort of become family, and it’s one of those things that seems to happen a lot around here.

My favorite part is seeing everybody around.

No, I just like all of the paintbrushes. All of them equally?
Andrew:
Miranda:
Equally.
There are over ten Sharpies on your desk. Do you paint first and then do an outline? Or do you outline first and then paint?
Andrew:
Miranda:
I outline after I paint.
Is there anything else you want to share about your painting process or how you work here?
Andrew:

I’ve worked here from year 2017 to present.
This is veering off a little from the art, but what’s your favorite thing to have for lunch?
Andrew:
Miranda:
My favorite thing to have for lunch is a ham-and-cheese sandwich.
Oh, I could totally go for one of those right now. That sounds super tasty.
