Welcome Dear Friends, On behalf of the Jewish Family Service ( JFS) staff and volunteers, we welcome you to Reel Hope 2011 and the fabulous Ellie Caulkins Opera House! Tonight is an evening we anticipate all year long. The house filled with friends—old and new—all with a strong sense of commitment to our mission and our community. Tonight we are pleased to honor two couples whose leadership and dedication to Jewish Family Service are exemplary: Harvey and Sue Allon and Ken and Rebecca Gart. They are special friends to JFS and we celebrate their contributions to our community. We are delighted to bring you the U.S. premiere of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, the longawaited film version of John le Carré’s classic best-selling novel that redefined the spy thriller. Set in 1973 Europe during the height of the Cold War, the film stars Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, John Hurt, and Mark Strong. Buckle your seat belts—it’s going to be a gripping ride! Thank you for joining us at our biggest fundraising event of the year. Your very presence here ensures that we can provide life-changing services to more than 21,000 people throughout our community who rely on JFS for needed support each year. You are helping seniors age in place and providing mental health counseling to individuals and families in distress. You are supporting training and placement services for those with barriers to employment. And you are providing crisis intervention and food to people who have nowhere else to turn. R e e l H o p e 2 0 1 1 H O N O R EE S Harvey and Sue Allon 2011 Kal Zeff Business Leaders of the Year Award Harvey and Sue Allon are each nationally recognized leaders and visionaries in their respective professional fields, who together strive to improve our community and the world in which they live through their civic leadership and philanthropy. While each was building a successful career in different sectors of the mortgage industry, they jointly realized a responsibility to give back with their time, resources, and by helping organizations they support raise funds. Since 2006, their Oak Tree Foundation (allon is Hebrew for oak tree) has sustained excellence and empowered positive change primarily in the areas of education and Jewish life, establishing long-term strategic partnerships that create lasting change. In 1994, Harvey founded Braddock Financial, and serves as its chair and CEO. In the 1990s, Sue founded and subsequently sold the Murrayhill Company, before starting Allonhill, at the height of the 2008 credit crisis. The Allons are proud of their 13-year-old daughter, Natalie, and Harvey’s two grown children, Aaron and Rachel. “By providing critical support in the community based only on need, JFS embodies the Jewish values that we believe improve lives, thus making the world a better place for us and for our children,” says Harvey. “We are proud to support JFS and humbled by this honor.”
R e e l H o p e 2 0 1 1 H O N O R EE S Ken and Rebecca Gart 2011 Jack Shapiro Community Service Award With their passion for children’s causes and support of Jewish organizations, Ken and Rebecca Gart exemplify community service in all aspects of their professional and philanthropic lives. They have generously supported JFS for many years and were among the first supporters to make a multiyear commitment to the agency. Ken is a partner in The Gart Companies, a multifaceted, privately held corporation. He is board chair of Denver Bike Sharing and a member of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce Board. Ken has served on the boards of Colorado Conservation Trust, Denver Metro Boys & Girls Clubs, and the Denver Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau. He is an avid sports enthusiast who enjoys cycling, skiing, and hiking, and has climbed more than 30 of Colorado’s 54 “fourteeners.” Rebecca has been a writer for The Daily Camera in Boulder, Sports & Fitness Publishing, Delicious Magazine, Natural Health, and Cooking Light. She volunteers at Graland Country Day School, Kent Denver, and the Montessori School of Denver, and serves on the Robert E. Loup JCC Board. She has participated in several leadership programs within the community. The Garts have taught their three children, Sydney, 11, Jeremy, 9, and Max, 4, the value of giving back and spend time volunteering as a family at JFS and other organizations. “We have made it one of our primary goals as parents to teach our children about tzedakah by doing philanthropic projects with them,” says Rebecca. Adds Ken, “By supporting JFS’s compassionate mission, we are helping to restore wellbeing in the greater Denver community with programs that are based on our own Jewish values. We are honored to receive this meaningful award.”
