COVIDResponding to

TO HELP PREVENT HOMELESSNESS, our Emergency Assistance Program provides mortgage and rent payments. As of December 2020, JFS provided payments totaling $738,000 in emergency financial assistance to 503 families throughout Colorado to remain housed.

AGING CARE & CONNECTIONS staff call older adult clients to ensure they are supported and not further isolated due to this crisis. They deliver groceries and kosher meals, pick up medications, and complete other errands for our older adult clients to minimize their need to go out.

THE WEINBERG FOOD PANTRY quickly converted to a drive-up model, that provides pre-packed boxes of food to anyone in the community experiencing food insecurity. Prior to the pandemic, the food pantry served about 40 families and individuals a day; that number has increased to an average of 150. Through the food pantry and deliveries, we have provided 1.5 million pounds of food to the community.

INDIVIDUAL SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENT for individuals with disabilities provides in-person and virtual job skills training. The Arts and Community Exploration (ACE) program offers in person or online classes.

-19 JFS THERAPISTS made the change from in-person sessions to teletherapy for mental health clients, including the school-based youths we serve through our KidSuccess program.

JFS BOULDER provides emergency financial assistance to all individuals and families, waiving the previous age requirement of 55+, and increasing payments from $3,000 to $100,000 in FY20. JFS Boulder has added a mental health therapist to meet the demands for service and started grief groups.

JFS has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic in many ways, serving more individuals and families than ever before, and we are committed to continuing our efforts to help the community recover from this crisis.

Caring for Our Community THE BABIES WERE WEARING PAPER TOWELS FOR DIAPERS On March 17—the first day we began our drive-up food pantry and opened it to anyone in need—an older woman using a walker arrived by bus.

four grandchildren because their mother is in jail. She further relayed that she didn’t have any food or diapers in her house. Until she could get diapers, the babies were wearing paper towels.

We not only gave Mary food and diapers, but also called and paid for a taxi to take her home, as it would be difficult to manage all the boxes on the bus. She was so appreciative.

KEEPING OLDER ADULTS CONNECTED Molly first got involved with JFS Boulder 14 years ago when her kids were young. Over the years, she has volunteered at older adult communities for the Jewish holidays and has served on JFS Boulder’s event committees. In May, Molly called JFS to see how she could help during the pandemic. Our volunteer services coordinator gave her a list of about 10 older adult clients to call and check in with. The people she calls are residents of a subsidized retirement community and, due to COVID-19, they are stuck in their rooms feeling isolated and lonely. “Everyone has been so positive and appreciative when I call,” says Molly. “They are happy to have someone to talk to and share what is happening in their lives. I listen and see if there are ways JFS can help, such as getting iPads to as many folks as possible so they can connect with their families.” She has also helped ensure they get the medical treatment they need by connecting them with JFS staff.

FROM WELFARE TO WORK When Christina joined the Colorado Works program, a case manager assessed her situation, talked to her about broadening her scope to find the right job, and helped her craft a compelling résumé that highlighted her past experiences and skills.

Christina previously worked for RTD’s Access-a-Ride program and applied for a job driving buses. “I was nervous that if I got the job, I wouldn’t be able to keep it because of my erratic schedule,” Christina explains. “But my case manager encouraged me to apply and helped me create a plan to approach my son’s father to make accommodations that would allow me to work.”

She got the job in March 2020 and was eager and ready to start work. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 closures, Christina was laid off and, shortly after, was diagnosed with the illness herself. After self-quarantining and recovering, she jumped right back into job searching. She quickly found a new full-time job in April that she is passionate about. “After I started the job, I got off welfare, bought health insurance and life insurance, and proudly called my Colorado Works case manager to tell her I no longer needed their services,” says Christina with excitement.

LOCAL TEACHER DELIVERS LESSON IN KINDNESS Ann, who works with kids on the autism spectrum at Joe Shoemaker Elementary in Denver, helped students meet one of their most basic needs while the school was closed. She came to the Weinberg Food Pantry up to three times a week and delivered food to six families throughout the summer.

Ann knew that many families at Joe Shoemaker depended on the school for childcare and two meals a day. After the school closed due to COVID-19, the staff discovered that more families than they realized didn’t have transportation to get to a food pantry or to Denver Public Schools’ lunch sites. Ann and several other teachers volunteered to pick up food for 14 families and deliver the food to their homes each week.

“Seeing how JFS has reached out to serve the community at-large is so heartwarming,” Ann says with a smile. “I am always struck by how efficient the food pantry system is as hundreds of cars move through the line. The volunteers and staff are so patient and always smiling. JFS as an organization is doing amazing things, and I love seeing all the individuals working on the front line.”
