David Last: How Technology Changed a Life Story of Hope David Last is a happy 12-year-old boy who attends the

Denver Jewish Day School. His incredible sense of humor and kind heart lighten the lives of everyone he knows. He enjoys life and learning. By all accounts, David is a bright young man, who happens to have been born with cerebral palsy.

David’s condition impacts his nervous system, limiting his ability to walk, see, and speak. He can do all of those things, but it takes him some extra effort. His muscles are tight and frequently go into spasms.

He has difficulty using his hands, which impacts his ability to perform many essential classroom tasks, such as holding a book, taking notes, performing math calculations, and writing. David also struggles to read standard-size print in his textbooks.

Many of these materials are enlarged for David’s use by his school, but the process is time consuming.

The Jewish Disabilities Network (JDN) worked closely with the special education team at David’s school, Assistive Technology Partners, and David’s family and determined that he would greatly benefit from assistive technology. Thanks to the support of JFS donors, the JDN was able to award David the funds to purchase an iPad®, keyboard, and a wireless printer.

Armed with these readily-available technologies, David can now take notes, magnify his reading materials, and easily transfer his assignments to his teachers. His iPad has been loaded with a special speech recognition technology app so he can dictate and communicate with his teachers.

His printer has scanning capabilities so that his textbooks and exams can be easily transferred to his iPad, giving him complete access to all the materials he needs to learn. Using wireless technology, David can turn in his assignments with the click of a button and print any document. One of the biggest advantages for David is that everything he needs is right there on his iPad, so he doesn’t have to go back and forth to his locker or carry heavy books.

Part of the funding covered an assistive technology consultant to provide support and training to the Denver Jewish Day School teachers and staff to implement these technologies for David’s benefit.

With just a small investment in technology, David now has the tools he needs to actively participate in his classes, keep up with his peers, and reach his full potential.

John and Leslie Keith VOLUNTEER Spotlight John and Leslie Keith were both looking for

a meaningful way to give back to their community and came to JFS in 2011 to find a way to make a difference. Leslie, a fourth-generation Denverite, has volunteered all her life.

She was a victim’s advocate for Arapahoe County, which she loved, but being on-call in the middle of the night was too hard, so she was looking for a daytime opportunity. “I knew about JFS and researched their volunteer opportunities online,” Leslie explains. “I liked the para-chaplain idea, so I made an appointment to meet with Nancy Benyamin, volunteer services director, and knew instantly it was a good fit.” Leslie attended the para-chaplain training and was matched with a JFS Senior Solutions client, “Carol,” a woman in her 60s, with whom she started visiting weekly.

Carol has a rare disease that leaves her wheelchair-bound and makes communicating difficult, which limits the activities she can do when Leslie visits. A few times, Leslie arranged for a van so she could take Carol to the movies and she took her to lunch for her birthday, which was a rare treat. “I take her out for walks so she can see the flowers, and bring her special food for the holidays and her favorite root beer floats,” says Leslie.

life, the fact that she is facing a certain death, and how hard that is. We’ve really bonded and connected. Carol refers to me as family whenever she introduces me to someone, which feels good. We never leave each other’s company without saying ‘I love you.’”

She adds about being a para-chaplain, “It’s been such a great, fulfilling experience and one that I highly recommend. The staff at JFS is just amazing and so supportive. They acknowledge that Carol’s situation is difficult,

check in to see how it’s going, and ask if I need to talk.” Leslie’s advice to others who may be considering a volunteer opportunity is that “you just have to seek it out; there are people out there—like Carol—who need help.”

John, who owns a home building company, had also been thinking about volunteering for awhile. He got a bit of a break from work and called us in October 2011 to be a Friendly Visitor volunteer. He was matched with “Sadie,” a Holocaust survivor who wanted someone to help her write her life story. “Honestly, it’s a difficult situation because Sadie is very unhappy and has limited interests,” says John. “She’s had a rough life, not only because of the Holocaust, but also due to a series of bad marriages and family trouble. She spends a lot of time complaining about her life and I’m trying to get her see the positive sides, such as the fact that she was a successful businesswoman.” John has taken a lot of notes about her life and has written the first of three sections of Sadie’s memoir. He plans to finish the story, include photos from her life, and bind it for her.

“While this volunteer opportunity is harder than I anticipated, it’s been rewarding,”

John says. “Sometimes I feel frustrated by the situation and want to give up, but her JFS care manager assures me that she can see positive changes in Sadie since I’ve been visiting her.

I do feel good if I can make even a small difference in her life.” And since Sadie had a string of difficult marriages and is mostly estranged from her son, John says that it good for her to have a sympathetic man in her life. “I’m a good listener and I like to hear people’s stories, so I have enjoyed —John Keith learning more about Sadie’s life,” says John. “Despite all her challenges, she has led an interesting life, including serving in the Israeli army as a young woman. We also both love movies, and talk about those a lot.”

Spotlight on Tiffanee Lenox, LSW, MSW STAFF Tiffanee Lenox, a single mother,

was unemployed for two years before she found her current job as JFS Family Safety Net case manager in February. She feels like this path was preconceived to prepare her to effectively work with families at JFS. Many of these families are in crisis situations that put them at risk of homelessness. Her own difficult experience gave her first-hand knowledge of what her clients are going through when they come to her for emergency assistance with rent, utilities, food, bus passes, medication, and other needs.

“When I was unemployed and struggling, I felt belittled and was treated like less than a human being when I applied for food stamps and other government assistance,” says Tiffanee.

“I was so frustrated that no one would listen to me and wanted to give up, but I couldn’t because I had to be strong for my daughter. I learned to persevere through the rough times.”

When clients walk through Tiffanee’s door, the first thing she does is let them vent because she knows that’s what they need at that moment. “Once they feel heard and realize that I’ve walked in their shoes, they trust me and quickly recognize my genuine care and concern.”

A Denver native, Tiffanee graduated from Montbello High School, received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Colorado, and a master’s in social work from the University of Denver with a specialty practice in at-risk youth. She is a licensed social worker and working toward becoming a licensed clinical social worker.

Prior to working at JFS, Tiffanee spent most of her career working with at-risk youth through a variety of positions in schools, the City of Denver’s juvenile probation department, and Catholic Charities. She also volunteered at the Denver Department of Human Services in a youth transitional housing program. “I liked the challenge of working with youth,” says Tiffanee. “I think it takes a special kind of person with tolerance, patience, and understanding that these kids’

frustration has many dimensions. I was able to find creative ways to help each person with his or her unique situation.”

In her current position at JFS, Tiffanee is still able to use those creative problem-solving skills to help families and seniors find the right personal solutions. “I feel it is my calling to help others. This job fulfills me and gives me the momentum to keep going when things get tough because it’s not about me,” explains Tiffanee. “It’s about helping others to keep the lights on, to have a roof over their heads, or to put food on their tables.”

When she’s not working, Tiffanee enjoys spending time with her four-year-old daughter, Zariah, and writing poetry. She is also a youth counselor and choir member at her church.

Spiritual Healing Bereavement Group Begins October 3 Rafael Spiritual Healing Services, a program of the JFS Counseling Center and Jewish Community Chaplaincy, will offer a bereavement support group for people who have experienced the loss of a loved one. The group will be held Wednesdays, October 3 through November 21 from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m.

This unique eight-session group not only supports people through the process of grieving, but also fosters connections with self, faith, and community by integrating Jewish traditions and rituals. The group will be co-facilitated by Rabbi Eliot Baskin, D.Min, Jewish community chaplain, and Arleen Gershen, LCSW, a JFS psychotherapist.

Matters The Conspiracy of Silence

The loss of a pregnancy through

miscarriage, stillbirth, or abortion (even if elective) can cause heartbreak, anxiety, guilt, anger, confusion, depression, and/or shock in an individual, couple, or family.

It is often a time of crisis, and former coping mechanisms no longer work. People may experience feelings of a loss of control over their lives and future while simultaneously grieving for a lost child. This is also the case with couples struggling with infertility issues.

Recent statistics reveal that in the U.S., 15% to 25% of recognized pregnancies— more than a million a year—end in miscarriage.

The number is even higher if you include “unrecognized” pregnancies.

Pregnancy loss is a form of death, but there has been great reluctance to view it as such for many reasons. It has been called “the conspiracy of silence.” Grief over the loss of a parent, spouse, other family member, or Arleen Gershen close friend is not as difficult for others to understand.

But with pregnancy loss, the expectations are not as clearly defined and the responsibility of others not so certain. Yet the effect on the parents can be absolutely devastating.

Long before birth, there is a bond formed between parent and unborn child. When pregnancy ends prematurely, or when the child dies in early infancy, the personal loss, including the hopes and dreams for the child

is frequently left unspoken. If the loss is not acknowledged and addressed, it can affect relationships with those closest to us—spouses, children, family members, or friends. Until the feelings of loss and grief are processed, the couple or individual cannot move forward in their lives.

Many myths about pregnancy loss need to be dispelled, while truths need to be better understood. Spouses might also blame their partners (even internally) while still grieving themselves.

The process of grieving, with its accompanying feelings and symptoms (often physically manifested), needs to be recognized and “normalized,” hopefully with a professional’s help. Often fears of a physical and emotional nature arise about becoming pregnant again.

Fathers’ reactions are often vastly different from the mothers’, potentially causing further miscommunication, misinterpretation, and alienation when couples are the most vulnerable and need the most support from each other.

Friends and family frequently make wellintended comments that cause further pain to the bereaved couple, such as “Don’t worry, you’re young. You’ll have another baby.” In reality, the couple doesn’t want another baby.

They wanted this one. Well-meaning people also say, “It was probably for the best,” or “It’s not a baby until it’s born,” both of which are

far from comforting and will most likely cause the couple to feel that their feelings are being negated.

JFS Receives $66,000 Grant from Edward and Marion Gordon Charitable Fund Thank you to the Edward and Marion

Gordon Charitable Fund, housed at the Jewish Community Foundation, for the recent grant of $66,000. This contribution will be used to support JFS mental health and Family Safety Net services. We appreciate the family’s consistent and generous contributions over the past decade. Through the fund, they also support several other local Jewish organizations, including the Allied Jewish Federation, Keshet of the Rockies, CAJE, and the Robert E. Loup Jewish Community Center.

Robyn Loup, longtime JFS supporter and former board member, went to high school with the Gordons’ son, Dan, and was instrumental in Dan’s decision to donate to JFS. Ed and Marion were charitable to the Jewish community for many years and set up the trust through the Jewish Community Foundation so their legacy would continue after they passed away. Dan moved away from Denver after college and was unfamiliar with the needs in the local Jewish community.

Dan asked Robyn for advice on which agencies to support. Since Robyn had served

as the president of Allied Jewish Federation and on the JFS board, she knew the needs in the Jewish community and could help Dan with these decisions. “I specifically joined the JFS board to advocate for mental health treatment in the community,” explains Robyn.

“I learned about so many individuals—Jewish and non-Jewish—who were unable to access mental health treatment.

Join JFS and the Mizel Museum for Babi Yar Memorial September 23 Jewish Family Service, the Mizel

Museum, and Michael Sheldon have teamed up to sponsor this year’s Babi Yar Memorial on Sunday, September 23, from 11:00 a.m. to noon. This annual event honors those massacred from 1941 to 1943 at the Babi Yar ravine on the outskirts of Kiev, Ukraine, and other victims of the Holocaust.

The event, which is always scheduled on the Sunday closest to the anniversary of the massacre, falls during the Ten Days of Awe this year. If you’ve attended the annual memorial, you know that the setting of Babi Yar Park, just west of Havana on Yale Avenue, inspires reverence.

We have the honor of Dr. David Shneer joining us again, as well as others from our community who can share stories of their families and their experience with Babi Yar. The Colorado Hebrew Chorale will perform a short concert of their “Essential Music of the Holocaust: History and Hope.”

JFS Senior Outreach Program Hosts High Holy Day Services Thanks to Jewish Family Service, isolated

members of our community will celebrate the High Holy Days this year. The shofar will sound, apples will be dipped into honey, and heartfelt prayers will be recited at more than 30 long-term care facilities, assisted living centers, retirement communities, mental health centers, and correctional institutions in metro Denver and Boulder.

Jewish Family Service’s volunteer para-chaplains and Rabbi Eliot Baskin, Jewish community chaplain, will lead High Holy Day services for residents of these facilities.

These services help bring the holidays to life for hundreds of Jews who otherwise may not be able to celebrate. And thanks to the hard work of several of our para-chaplains, Jay Miller, Allan Markman, and Leland Huttner, we now have beautifully designed, liturgically updated service booklets for the senior population and their families to use.

Mitzvah CORPS! New Teen Volunteer Opportunity Begins

September 6 in the Weinberg Food Pantry!

The Weinberg Food Pantry has

an exciting new monthly volunteer opportunity called Mitzvah Corps that enables teens, ages 12 to 18, to fulfill the Jewish mitzvah of tikkun olam, or repairing the world. Whether your kids are looking for a Bar/Bat Mitzvah project,

need to complete community service hours, or just want to help the community, this program is for them!

We Need Food Donations for High Holy Day Food Drives!

Although the recession officially ended in 2009, the downturn has created challenges for people across the state. There are 659,786 Coloradans in poverty, representing 13.4% of the population. More than 23% of households with children in Colorado reported food hardship, with children aged newborn to five most at risk of living in homes without enough food. While grocery store donations are up from last year, they continue to be less than donations before the recession.

Individual food donations to the pantry continue to be under pre-recession levels as well. At this time, we need your help to stock our pantry shelves and provide nutritious food to people in need!

When you attend services during the High Holy Days, please drop food off at your synagogue. If you do not attend services, please drop food off at JFS, 3201 South Tamarac Drive in Denver.
