Tagawa Gardens Manager Helps Ensure Growth of

SHALOM Peace Planters

Last winter, Beth Zwinak, manager of

Tagawa Gardens in Centennial, was inspired by a story about SHALOM Peace Planters on 9News. She learned about this new SHALOM Denver social enterprise venture, in which a vocational specialist with a horticulture background works with clients with developmental disabilities to assemble creative potted plants using recycled pots donated by Arc Thrift Stores. The plants are then sold through a variety of retail outlet partners.

Shortly thereafter, Will Garth, SHALOM Denver business development manager, contacted Beth to see how they could work together to sell Peace Planters in the popular garden store. After a few emails and meetings, a business relationship blossomed.

Before Mother’s Day—Tagawa’s biggest holiday, which kicks off the gardening season—Beth and her “I knew I needed to team created a display share this gem with area for the Peace others in the industry.” Planters to be sold.

The initial plan was to —Beth Zwinak sell holiday-themed planters for six holidays throughout the year, but they were so popular that Beth decided to keep them in the store year-round.

Beth says, “Dee, Tagawa’s Houseplant Department supervisor and tropical plant horticulturist, has been very helpful in establishing the successful retail sale of Peace Planters at our store through her plant care expertise, advice, and suggestions. She now places monthly orders for the planters, as well as assures that the planters are displayed nicely and kept well-maintained.”

“I love the story behind the Peace Planters,” says Beth. “The potted plants themselves are lovely. The fact that they are providing jobs, therapy, and skills to people with disabilities makes them so much more

appealing than an ordinary gift of a houseplant or flowers. And Tagawa can complete the circle by selling the products, which makes the program self-supporting and sustainable.

A few months later, Beth arranged for Will to give a presentation to the Garden Centers of Colorado (GCC), a membership organization to which every independent garden center in the region belongs. “It’s nice to be the only garden center that sells Peace Planters,” says Beth, “but that isn’t helping the program grow, so I knew I needed to share this gem with others in the industry.” The GCC board was impressed by the program and invited Will to present at their annual meeting in September.

“In addition to all that Beth has done to make the Peace Planter program successful at Tagawa, she has provided a plethora of advice,

referrals, and introductions to others in the garden industry,” says Will. “We are so grateful for her endless support!”

To show his appreciation, Will invited Beth for a tour of SHALOM Denver and then surprised her with a SHALOM Denver Hero Award. Herman Garcia, one of the first clients to work in the Peace Planter program, helped Will present the award and a card signed by all the clients. “I was totally shocked!” exclaims Beth.

“I was just doing what felt like the right thing to do to help the program, not trying to do anything special.

It’s just what we do at Tagawa. Meeting all the clients and receiving a personal card signed by everyone was equally as touching as the award. I’m very honored.”

Beth hopes to see Peace Planters in every local garden store and that everyone will soon have one in their home. She can see the program expanding into flower shops and other types of businesses, too. “The planters are like flower arrangements, but longer-lasting gifts that help others in so many ways,” Beth says.

Juanita says, “I like my job. There are nice people there!” She enjoys making new friends—both the other SHALOM workers and the AMS employees—and getting a paycheck.

In 2008, Juanita joined SHALOM’s prevocational program, where she developed job skills and gained experience with mailing, packaging, and assembly projects. At the AMS enclave, Juanita is part of a situational assessment in which SHALOM staff is evaluating her skills to see what barriers to employment she has. “The end goal for Juanita and others in the enclave is learning skills so they can get hired by other companies in the greater community,” explains Jessica. “Juanita’s goal for the year is to move in to a community job and earn a competitive salary and benefits.

Our hope is that Juanita’s experience at AMS will expedite this process for her.”

SHALOM clients have been assembling products for AMS at the SHALOM Denver work center for about a year and a half. A few months ago, AMS called and said their company was growing and they wanted a SHALOM crew to grow with them at their Littleton facility.

“The enclave team is providing us with reliable and efficient services and we are pleased to have them on-site,” says Julie Fogelman, AMS vice president of human resources. “Our company’s guiding value is to make a difference in the lives of the communities we Juanita shows off one of the serve. Beyond the LEMONADE STAND Raising Charitable Kids

When Ari Levine was just eight

years old, he asked his friends not to bring presents to his birthday party and, instead, to bring donations of food for the Weinberg Food Pantry at Jewish Family Service. Ari said, “I did something for a person that really helped them.

It’s like giving a million bucks!”

When Jamie Resnik was seeking a volunteer activity to do with her two young children, ages six and four, Nancy Benyamin, JFS Volunteer Services director, suggested they fill bags for the Weinberg Food Pantry with the ingredients for a tuna casserole. The project, done in assembly line fashion on the coffee table, was easy and fun, attests Jamie, and it also provided quality family time. “By giving my kids the opportunity to feed and care for others,” she continues, “I’m also feeding their hearts and teaching them to be generous, giving people.” Discussions have continued since, and the Resniks are planning to volunteer again for the pantry.

Jewish Family Service offers many charitable opportunities for every age group.

For the Weinberg Food Pantry, families can do at-home projects such as bag rice; collect Julia Resnik, age 4, assembling food, diapers, school tuna casserole packages. supplies, toiletries, or new winter clothing; and prepare nutrition packs for clients who come when the pantry is closed.

Through Bright Holidays, parents and children can “adopt” a family at holiday time, providing meals and gifts. In the summer, kids ages 10 and up enjoy volunteering for Lunchbox Express. For

The young people who participate in these meaningful projects represent a new breed called “philanthro-kids” and “philanthro-teens,” and we need more of them! However, not every child can, like Ari, initiate a charitable act on his or her own. Good role models—parents and grandparents who themselves volunteer and donate, and who talk positively about helping others—are essential. When volunteering becomes an important family activity, the influence is lasting. My daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Friedman, for example, has volunteering in her genes. She grew up seeing her parents and grandparents donating their time and resources. To her that’s just what people do. Adds Nancy Benyamin, “And since children learn by example, it’s vital to ‘live the action.’”

Raising charitable children is an art. Below, you’ll find many tried-and-true ways to instill the values of giving and volunteering in children of every age group. Ideas for Young Children Even three- and four-year-olds can understand the concepts of giving and concern for others. So bring your young children along to help when you serve a holiday dinner to the homeless, pass out cookies at a hospital, or prepare boxes of food and clothing in response to an emergency. (It’s always a good idea to check to be sure young children are welcome.)

Volunteering together as a family teaches important values, develops new skills, provides satisfaction, and strengthens family bonds.

Hence, it is a unifying force.

Ideas for Elementary School Children When children begin to receive an

allowance, encourage them to donate 10 percent each week to a worthy cause—an organization that collects toys for needy children at holiday time or a charity such as Heifer International through which donors underwrite animals to sustain families in developing countries.

Always involve the children in choosing an organization or a cause that appeals to them.

For example, if a child loves animals, help find organizations and projects that match this interest. Then set up a schedule to volunteer regularly as a family. Children who volunteer are twice as likely to volunteer as adults.

Whatever the task, enjoy it, and when your children tire of a project, move on to a new one. But always celebrate the conclusion and talk about its impact.

Give children this age a small sum on their birthdays to donate to their charity of choice. Arrange for them to make the donation in person, and accompany them when they go. Take a picture, make a video, or create a scrapbook and add to it each year.

At birthday parties, recommend that children ask guests to bring a book or a toy for an underprivileged child instead of—or even along with—a present. Betsy Teutsch, a Philadelphia artist and writer, and her husband, David, also make a donation each year in honor of the birthday child, the amount corresponding to the child’s age.

Elementary school youngsters can also stuff envelopes at their synagogue or church, make sandwiches for a homeless shelter, plant little pots and take them to homebound people, bring toys to Children’s Hospital, or send letters thanking firefighters for what they do for the community.

Ideas for Middle and High School Students Teenagers are caring and capable, and ripe to become philanthropists. Take them along when you help build a house for Habitat for Humanity or visit residents at an assisted living

facility. Help them organize a car wash for a worthwhile cause or wrap gifts at holiday time.

Walk together to raise money for breast cancer or Alzheimer’s disease.

Award. Teach them, too, how to evaluate charities, and enroll them in a course at Denver’s Young Americans Bank to learn money management.

When they begin to babysit and earn money, suggest they donate 10 percent of their earnings. Perhaps your charitable teenager is a good candidate for the Rose Youth Foundation.

After studying applications and making site visits, this year’s cohort of students in grades 10 to 12 allocated $60,000 to Jewish and non-Jewish causes. In fact, Jewish Family Service received a $5,500 grant to provide school-based mental health services for refugee adolescents experiencing depression.

Charity is an important tenet of Jewish tradition. Philanthropy is a duty for Jews—and not just for the wealthy. Even those who receive tzedakah must give whatever they can. We are taught not to avert our eyes from someone in need, and that help must always be given in a way that preserves the dignity of the recipient.

It’s not optional to perform mitzvot; we are commanded to do them. And Tikkun Olam— repairing or perfecting the world—is also our sacred obligation. As you discuss philanthropy, model charitable behavior, and volunteer as a family, make these values a central part of the conversation.

Providing Mental Health in School-Based Health Centers

Through its KidSuccess

school-based counseling program, Jewish Family Service (JFS) therapists have provided community support in public schools for families and students since 1995. Our innovative hands-on approach helps students find a professional who listens with empathy, and provides them with options, skills, and resources. This relationship enables students to confide in a therapist who can help them navigate adolescent issues, trauma, depression, and family problems.

Therapists work with students’ families to help build a collaborative working relationship with the school staff, which fosters more

effective problem-solving. Students who are unburdened by emotional difficulties are better prepared to achieve academically and engage fully in school activities and friendships. They are less likely to be isolated, angry, depressed, and anxious. When students are given the opportunity to express feelings, such as pain and frustration, with a therapist, they are less likely to be aggressive to others or to use drugs or alcohol. Offering free mental health care in the schools—where it is easy to access— removes barriers to treatment.

In the past several years, we have partnered with Denver Public Schools and Denver Health to provide mental health services at three school-based health centers in local high schools. We have a therapist onsite at the district’s 16th health center, located at Thomas Jefferson High School, which opened this school year. These health centers provide primary and mental health care, reproductive health education, immunizations, sports physicals, and insurance enrollment assistance services to Denver Public School students.

The focus is truly on the whole child, which helps foster overall wellness and success in academics, family life, and social and emotional development.

As you’ve probably heard, one in four adults has a diagnosable mental disorder. Half of those with mental health diagnoses have problems by age 14. According to the National Institutes of Health, two-thirds of children with mental disorders go without the treatment they need.

With the influx of Coloradans into the health care system, the community mental health centers have very long waitlists. It is incredibly difficult to reach uninsured and underinsured individuals and families in need in a timely and effective manner. The situation for families who have children living with mental health challenges is even more critical. For today’s children and teens, the consequences of these problems are significant and often

ongoing: dropping out of school, depression, substance abuse, violence and, if left untreated, possibly even suicide.

The good news is, studies show that school-based health centers improve students’ attendance, dropout rates, and classroom behavior. When therapists are available at the school, students are also more willing to seek help for sensitive issues like abuse and other trauma. The therapist can work with the student, teachers, school nurse, principal, and parents.

This truly enables the adults involved in a student’s life to create a team that supports that student both at home and at school.

Stacey has treated individuals and families in a variety of settings, including Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, where she worked for four years. Her main areas of focus are parent-child relationships, blended and stepfamilies, and mediation. Her recent interests include integrated care and refugee mental health. Stacey also devotes time to developing collaborative relationships among parents, schools, and the community.

WITH Someone Matter Caring With Alzheimer’s Disease

For many people, experiencing

memory loss is a real concern as they age.

Common questions that are asked: Is it normal aging? Is it dementia or Alzheimer’s? What is the difference?

The Alzheimer’s Association offers the following explanations.

Dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life.

Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking, and behavior. It is the most common type of dementia and accounts for Julie Hewson 60 to 80 percent of cases.

Memory loss that occurs occasionally can be associated with aging, but there are signs to be aware of that may point toward Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. The Alzheimer’s Association provides a list of 10 signs of Alzheimer’s disease, including memory changes that disrupt daily life, difficulty completing familiar tasks, and changes in mood and personality.

It is important for those with concerns about memory loss to talk with a physician.

Early diagnosis can maximize treatment options. It is a starting point for the person with the diagnosis and his or her care partners to navigate resources and create a plan for

supporting and providing care.

Providing care is meant to be a partnership with the people with Alzheimer’s—not something done to or for them. They have a say in their care.

For those with Alzheimer’s disease, there will be good days and not so good days; sometimes it may even seem like there are good, and not good moments throughout the day. When there are challenges, it is important to remember that a person with Alzheimer’s disease is not acting or reacting in a way that is meant to be difficult.

Alzheimer’s causes changes in the brain; not all the cells are able to communicate as they used to. Learning techniques to provide care with a person with Alzheimer’s disease can provide an opportunity for increasing the number of good moments. Classes and events, some of which are free, are offered through the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org).

A supportive team of family, friends, and professionals to help along the journey is essential for providing the best care for everyone involved. The care managers at the Jay and Rose Phillips Family Foundation Senior Solutions Center at JFS and the professional care providers with JFS at Home can be a part of the team. Julie Hewson has a master’s degree in gerontology and a certificate in dementia care from the Alzheimer’s Association. Julie enjoys assisting the JFS Senior Solutions care managers to meet the needs of their clients. It was the journey of caring with her grandfather who had Alzheimer’s disease that sparked Julie’s interest in caring with seniors and people with Alzheimer’s disease and their care partners.

GIFTS NEEDED for Bright Holidays Program Can you imagine not being able to buy Hanukkah or Christmas gifts for your children or

loved ones? That is the unfortunate reality for many of our clients, but you can help!

Through our Bright Holidays program, you can give holiday gifts to individuals and families in need. The process to participate in this meaningful program is simple:

1. Sign up as a donor by November 14.

2. We will match you with an individual or family and give you gift wish lists our clients have provided.

3. You shop and drop gifts off to JFS by December 12. This is also a wonderful opportunity to shop with your children or grandchildren to pick out items these families want or need most.

4. Our staff will then deliver the gifts to the clients.
