JFS’s first fundraiser, “Reel Hope Boulder,” at the Dairy Center for the Arts, 2590 Walnut Street. This will be an exciting evening with Hollywood producer David Klawans, who discovered the declassified CIA documents that led to the production of Argo.

This monumental film won the Oscar for Best Picture at the 85th Annual Academy Awards. Enjoy Middle Eastern food and drinks.

one of the largest and most devastating disasters to strike our state, and we are very grateful to everyone who has helped those in need.

At this point, the damage remains incalculable and many victims have been displaced from their homes with nowhere to turn.

Boulder JFS can help. Flood relief financial assistance is available for those in need who have had a flood related loss.

A drop-in support group is available to those who are overwhelmed with feelings of grief and loss. JFS is also available to provide support, case management, information, and referral services. VOLUNTEER Spotlight A chance meeting led to a relation-

ship that has greatly enhanced three women’s lives. In December 2011, Susan Kodish went to Hotel Boulderado to watch her daughters perform at the holiday tea. She started talking to a woman standing near her, who happened to be Ingrid Swords, Boulder JFS volunteer coordinator.

“Ingrid told me about her job and I said I had been thinking about volunteering,” recalls Susan.

“I wanted to drive people to appointments or to get groceries, and Ingrid told me about the Friendly Visitor program. At the time, I wasn’t sure I could make a weekly commitment, but asked Ingrid to send me some information.”

The next month, Ingrid sent Susan an email telling her about an elderly woman named Lee who had just moved to town and needed a Friendly Visitor. “Many things in my life aligned to allow me to make time for this commitment and I agreed to meet Lee,” says Susan. “I lost both my parents within the past few years and I wanted to have some connection to people of an older generation and give back to the community.” Susan started visiting Lee Horowitz in February 2012 and it was a great match!

Lee, 92, lost her husband in 2011 and moved to Boulder from Florida shortly thereafter to be near her daughter, Trudi. “Mom was married for 70 years and focused her energy on my father for all that time,” explains Trudi. “She gave up her friends and feels bad now that she is alone. She lives in an apartment building filled mainly with residents in their 20s and 30s and feels isolated.” Before she met Susan, the only person Lee knew in Boulder was her daughter, whom she sees every day.

Trudi says, “I can’t say enough good things about Susan; she has been amazing! She is almost like a surrogate daughter—Mom says she’s a clone of me. She’s very caring. If she’s out of town and can’t visit one week, she will call from where she is to check on Mom. She’s also very

attentive on my mom’s birthdays and holidays and is always on the lookout for fun activities they can do together.” And since Trudi is her mother’s primary caretaker, she greatly appreciates the respite Susan’s visits provide so Susan Kodish and Lee Horowitz that she can work or take care of personal business.

Lee shares her daughter’s sentiments about Susan. “She’s very good company, is very thoughtful, and she keeps her appointments,” says Lee with a smile. “I can’t find anything wrong with Susan; she’s perfect as far as I’m concerned!”

During their weekly visits, Susan and Lee generally go out to lunch and chat. Sometimes they go to a movie, a play, or something else happening in town. Lee appreciates that Susan picks her up, brings her home, and makes everything easier for her while they’re out. Susan says, “Lee is truly a delight. No matter what is going on in my life, when I visit Lee, I forget about everything else. I get to pause and catch my breath. It forces me to be present and take a break from my everyday responsibilities.” She adds, “Lee always brings a smile to my face. She is filled with wisdom and shares her life experiences. I am lucky that I got matched with somebody whose company I enjoy so much!”
