Every year we look forward to this night when we welcome our friends—old and new—to celebrate JFS and spend quality time together. Thank you for joining us.

Tonight we are thrilled to honor two couples whose leadership and dedication to Jewish Family Service are exemplary: Elaine and Max Appel and Betsy Mordecai Heyman and Gareth Heyman. They are special friends to JFS and we are honored to celebrate their contributions to our community.

We are excited to bring you a private advance screening of Emperor, an epic film set in the aftermath of Japan’s surrender to the U.S. following World War II. The film stars Matthew Fox and Tommy Lee Jones, and was directed by Peter Webber, who also brought us Girl with a Pearl Earring. We are fortunate to be able to bring you this film months before its U.S. theater release.

Thank you for joining us at one of our biggest fundraisers of the year. Your very presence here ensures that we can provide life-changing services to more than 21,000 people who rely on JFS for needed support each year.

You are helping seniors remain independent in their own homes, where they want to be. You are providing mental health counseling to people in distress. You are supporting training and placement services for those with barriers to employment.

And you are providing food and financial aid to hundreds of families in crisis, keeping them from becoming homeless. You are making a difference in countless lives, and we thank you.

REEL HOPE 2012 HONOREES Elaine and Max Appel 2012 Jack Shapiro Community Service Award Elaine and Max Appel couldn’t be more deserving of the 2012 Jack Shapiro Community Service Award.

They have supported JFS for more than a decade.

Their generous contributions have helped benefit a range of JFS programs—all helping people in crisis situations with food, rent assistance, utility bills, medical supplies, and prescriptions through the JFS Family Safety Net program.

Thanks to the Appels’ thoughtful philanthropic leadership, hundreds of families in our community have avoided homelessness. And because of their continued support of the most vulnerable in our community, the lower level of the JFS building now bears their name: The Elaine and Max Appel Family Safety Net Atrium.

In addition to their annual support of the Family Safety Net program, the Appels personally issued a $100,000 challenge match for all money raised at the 2012 JFS Executive Luncheon, allowing JFS to raise an additional $200,000 in a single day.

The Appels are inventors and entrepreneurs who have owned several companies. They founded Orange Glo International, renowned for its Orange Glo and Oxi Clean products.

After building the company for nearly 20 years, they sold it in 2006. Before Orange Glo, Max was a professional fundraiser, primarily for Jewish and environmental groups.

“JFS does a lot of good in the community and we like that people don’t have to be Jewish to benefit from its services,” says Max. Elaine adds, “JFS helps people with all kinds of life challenges, which have been magnified with the current economy.”

In addition to supporting JFS, the Appels contribute to several other local charities, including Clinica Tepeyac, Denver Urban Coalition, Food Bank of the Rockies, Rainbow Alley, the Youth Drop-in program at the GLBT Community Center, and Urban Peak. Elaine serves on the board of the Jewish Historical Society and she and Max will take the helm as co-presidents this winter.

“We are very flattered to receive this award,” says Max. “JFS is right in line with our philosophy of helping people in crisis. We are especially proud that all four of our children are also committed to serving Jewish Family Service.”

REEL HOPE 2012 HONOREES Betsy Mordecai Heyman and Gareth Heyman 2012 Kal Zeff Business Leaders of the Year In addition to running a successful company, Betsy Mordecai Heyman and Gareth Heyman are generous philanthropists who donate their time and resources to many local charities.

A proud member of the Jewish Family Service Board of Directors, Gareth serves on the boards of the Anti-Defamation League and Congregation Beth Evergreen, and is on the Green Meeting Industry Council. Betsy serves on the boards of the Bard Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Denver, the Denver Film Society, and the Robert E. Loup Jewish Community Center. Together they are active with Denver Hospice, Denver Scholarship Foundation, Judi’s House, Project PAVE, the University of Denver, and the Women’s Foundation of Colorado.

The couple runs MorEvents, recognized as one of the nation’s premier event management companies. Based in Denver, the company has offices in Miami, Los Angeles, Nice, and Tel Aviv, and facilitates events around the globe for Fortune 500 companies, the federal government, and nonprofits.

“It is truly an honor to follow in the footsteps of others who have received the Kal Zeff Business Leader of the Year award,” says Betsy. “We admire and respect them all deeply.

Our son, Stone, has been taught the merits of tzedakah from a very early age and receiving this award helps to reinforce our philanthropic values to him.”

Gareth adds, “Kal Zeff was clearly an icon in this community. Along with his success, he always remained philanthropic and true to his Jewish roots. We have followed these same principles with our business. Since the inception of MorEvents, we have always given back to the community, both financially and through in-kind support. This has never been done for business gain, but for the benefit of the organizations we believe in.”

The Heymans’ 13-year-old son, Stone, is a seventh grader at West Middle School. They are proud of his sense of humor, love, and compassion. His parents are looking forward to seeing Stone follow in his family’s footsteps of philanthropy with his upcoming bar mitzvah in February. For his mitzvah project, Stone is raising money to buy sports equipment for underprivileged youth.

In the aftermath of Japanese Emperor Hirohito’s World War II surrender to the U.S., General Douglas MacArthur (Academy Award® winner Tommy Lee Jones) and his adjutant General Bonner Fellers (Matthew Fox) are faced with a decision of historic importance: whether or not to have Hirohito tried and executed as a war criminal.

It’s a story of love and war, of understanding and reconciliation, at a pivotal moment in global history. Emperor is an epically scaled historical drama from director Peter Webber (Girl with a Pearl Earring).

Nearly seven decades after the end of World War II, it is difficult to fully grasp just how devastating was the effect of Emperor Hirohito’s surrender to Allied Forces in August 1945, along with his accompanying surrender of any claim of divinity. The events of that summer, galvanized by the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, signaled much more than mere military defeat for Japan: it called into question the country’s most entrenched beliefs. Emperor vividly re-creates this time of overwhelming confusion and rebirth, focusing on the U.S. deliberations regarding Hirohito’s fate.

As de facto ruler of Japan in his position as Supreme Commander of the occupying forces, it falls to General MacArthur (Jones) to decide whether Emperor Hirohito should stand trial. He appoints his protégé, General Bonner Fellers (Matthew Fox), a leading expert on Japan, to head the investigation. As these two men, strong personalities both, grapple with their weighty responsibility, Fellers becomes haunted by a love affair with Aya (Eriko Hatsune), a Japanese exchange student he met some years before. When Aya suddenly disappears, Fellers undertakes a search for her through the devastated country, a journey that will reawaken the compassion within him that has been brutalized by war and help him come to his momentous decision.

Director Peter Webber delivers another sumptuous period piece—Emperor is oldfashioned filmmaking at its best. With the help of its esteemed cast and outstanding production design, the film balances realism with romance, the political with the personal, and reminds us that history is made as much in people’s hearts and minds as it is on the battlefield.
