INTRODUCING

What is atrial fibrillation?

ST. LU KE ’ S AT RI AL FI BRIL L ATION CENTER

Atrial fibrillation (Afib) is an irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia) that starts in the upper parts of the heart.

Revolutionizing the Approach to Heart Rhythm Care St. Luke’s Atrial Fibrillation Center is lead by a team of cardiac electrophysiologists and cardiac surgeons who have specialized training in treating Afib and other heart rhythm disorders. We are pioneering the use of new technologies as well as more traditional treatments.

It is the most common type of abnormal heart rhythm affecting nearly 2.2 million American adults every year.

Atrial Fibrillation Center 1469 Eighth Avenue Bethlehem, PA 18018

1-866-STLUKES (785-8537)

St. Luke’s Atrial Fibrillation Center Team (left to right): James Hummel, MD, Electrophysiologist; Darren Traub, DO, Electrophysiologist; Robert Hipp, PA-C; Stephen Olenchock, DO, Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery; and Jeffrey Veluz, MD, Cardiothoracic Surgeon

Normally, the heart beats in a strong, steady rhythm. In Afib, a problem with the heart’s electrical system causes it to beat fast and irregularly. This “quivering“ upsets the normal rhythm between the upper and the lower parts of the heart. This could eventually lead to a stroke or heart failure. Services include: • • • •

Catheter ablation Cryoballoon ablation Minimally invasive surgery Individualized medical therapy

Some common symptoms of Afib include: • • • • • •

A fluttering feeling in the chest Chest pain or pressure Feeling out of breath Feeling weak or tired Dizziness and sweating Feeling faint or lightheaded

For more information, call St. Luke’s InfoLink at 1-866-STLUKES (785-8537) or visit www.slhn.org/afibcenter.
