NORTH
Forty years ago, in 1986, a group of Jewish doctors started gathering in the Allentown home of Dr. Michael z”l and Eileen Ufberg to exchange ideas for how they could help grow and strengthen our Jewish community and provide more effective support for Israel.
They had no shortage of ideas. Foremost was to establish a society within the Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley to unite our local doctors to meet a range of goals established by themselves and the Federation. Named for the 12th-century Jewish scholar and physician Rabbi Moses Ben Maimon, aka Maimonides, our Maimonides Society was the first Jewish Federation society of doctors in North America.
Over the years, dozens of other communities followed the Lehigh Valley lead, and they continue to benefit from the ideas, leadership and volunteering, and other contributions of their own Maimonides Societies.
Of course, things have changed a bit as our
society celebrates its 40th anniversary. These days, membership includes not just doctors, but healthcare professionals in general, including nurse practitioners and physician assistants, psychologists, nurses, and dentists.
The Lehigh Valley society regularly brings its healthcare professionals together discuss various aspects of medicine and the practice of it, exchange experiences and ideas, meet new members, and promote the communitybuilding efforts and fundraising work of our Jewish Federation to aid Israel and Jewish people and communities locally and around the world.
We hope that you’ll use this directory to find professionals who are the right fit for your pursuit of better personal health and in doing so help support their continuing essential efforts to improve our community.
